In a bid to ease traffic congestion in the city, clean and rejuvenate the Sanganoor Canal, the Coimbatore Corporation has floated tender to build a road along the water body.
Sources in the civic body said the tender was for developing that stretch of the canal between the Mettupalayam Road and Avinashi Road, which would be the first phase.
The project cost for the first phase was around ₹40 crore, which the civic body had sought from the Directorate of Town and Country Planning under the Infrastructure and Amenities Fund. ....

Streets empty, shops closed amid lockdown | Coimbatore News


Coimbatore: The entire city was deserted on the first Sunday of complete lockdown during the Covid-19 second wave.
All shops, except pharmacies and petrol pumps, were closed. As 500 police personnel were deployed across the city, very few people were roaming freely. The cops stopped all those who were on roads and questioned them. Most of them had stepped out to visit hospitals, buy medicines or on the way to the railway station.
Meanwhile, hundreds of guest workers were found at the Coimbatore Railway Junction, waiting for the Dhanbad Express and Gorakhpur Express. Most of them had reached the station on Saturday night. ....

Police personnel checking motorists in the city on Tuesday night after the curfew began.  
The Coimbatore City and District (Rural) Police together deployed around 900 personnel for special checks and patrols to enforce the night curfew that came into effect at 10 p.m. on Tuesday. The police force across Coimbatore city and rural was asked to maintain composure while dealing with people, including motorists, during the curfew between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.
In Coimbatore city, around 400 police personnel were deployed, and City Police Commissioner S. Davidson Devasirvatham instructed them to enforce the curfew in a polite manner. Personnel on curfew duty were also advised to use body-worn cameras depending on the availability. ....
