Former police commissioner will oversee 'change' at AMC

FORMER Victoria police chief commissioner Christine Nixon has been appointed chair of the new oversight committee at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC), in an effort to address issues that continue to emerge from the prison.
Ms Nixon will lead the newly-formed committee that will “develop a blueprint for change” at the centre, following a string of controversies at the prison in recent years. 
Ms Nixon served as the chief commissioner of Victoria police between 2001 and 2009 – the first female ever to do so – and led the Victorian bushfire reconstruction and recovery authority, overseeing the rebuilding operation. ....

ACT Labor MLA Michael Pettersson has yet again set his sights on reforming the Canberra community. This time it s in the form of just introduced legislation that would see the decriminalisation of the personal possession and use of illicit substances in the capital territory.
The bill lists the most widely used illegal drugs in the ACT with an accompanying weight signifying what s deemed an amount for personal use. If a person was found in possession of such an amount – instead of arrest and charge – they d be fined and referred to a health professional. ....

The ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS) today called on all members of the ACT Legislative Assembly to support today’s motion by Elizabeth Kikkert MLA calling for an independent inquiry into systemic and/or institutional racism at Canberra’s prison, the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC).
ACTCOSS CEO, Dr Emma Campbell, said: “In the wake of historic allegations of racism, and the disturbing allegations last month relating to the mistreatment of an Aboriginal woman on remand in the AMC, ACTCOSS supports a call by Julie Tongs OAM, CEO of Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Services, for an independent inquiry into racism at the AMC. ....
