Prairiland ISD cancels May 1 board election

PATTONVILLE — Prairiland ISD trustees declared unopposed incumbents Jerrod Bankhead and Ryan Gordon winners of the upcoming board of trustees election, and cancelled the May 1 vote at a meeting this week.
The board also made masks optional for all students and staff after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott repealed his early mask mandate and opened businesses 100% effective Wednesday.
“We realize that there are still some concerns about this, but in the end it was decided to no longer mandate masks,” Superintendent Jeff Ballard said. “If we see a rise in positive cases and quarantines, we can change back to wearing masks.”
Ballard said other safety protocols remain in place relating to personal hygiene and the frequent disinfection of buildings and buses. ....

New Braunfels ISD will keep masks in schools

New Braunfels ISD will continue to require masks in its schools, the district’s board of trustees decided on Monday night.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott — who lifted the mask mandate effective on Wednesday — left the decision up to the Texas Education Agency which then left it up to local school boards.
“We’re just right on the cusp of getting mass vaccinations and there’s only, what, 55 days or so left of school?” NBISD trustee Eric Bergquist said. “We need to finish strong, we will revisit these policies as vaccines go up.”
Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath held a virtual meeting with superintendents last week in which he said masks in public schools are required unless a local board made them optional. ....

Comal ISD seeking winter weather waivers

On Tuesday morning, Comal Independent School District trustees will meet to approve winter weather class waivers as the first students return to Specht Elementary School, flooded by burst water pipes a few weeks ago.
“The whole front office was flooded along with several classrooms,” Steve Stanford, the district’s communications director said  of the damage at the school, which will welcome back kindergartners and first-grade students. “We were able to mitigate damages enough to bring some of those young kids back on Tuesday.”
Comal ISD’s School Operations group posted photographs from Specht Elementary School on Twitter over the weekend. Water lines in the ceiling burst as part of last week’s winter storm. ....
