MAHEC adds walk-in clinic for single-dose J&J vaccine at UNC Asheville


A recent pause of that vaccine was lifted April 27 after a fresh review by the FDA and Centers for Disease Control found confidence that this vaccine is safe and effective in preventing COVID-19, when out of 6.8 million doses administered there were 15 cases of a rare blood clot.
The next day, on April 28, Gov. Roy Cooper announced a plan to lift many COVID-19 safety measures by June 1 and a new executive order easing gathering limits as the state pushes toward the threshold of two-thirds of all adults becoming at least partially vaccinated to lift the mask mandate altogether. 
As of May12, 50.8% of adults across North Carolina have been at least partially vaccinated and 45.1% fully vaccinated, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.  ....

North Carolina hopes to lift many COVID-19 restrictions in less than a month, if enough people can get vaccinated.
Since the first vaccines started rolling out, local groups knew focusing on historically marginalized populations was going to be a key in clearing that hurdle, so as doses, providers and access have grown, so has the share of Hispanic residents getting their shots. 
Cristina Cardenas, health access coordinator for Western Carolina Medical Society, was part of a panel discussion in January discussing what it would take to successfully reach out to people of color, a necessary piece to solve the pandemic puzzle.  ....

NC Gov. Roy Cooper to lift outdoor mask rule, raise gathering limits


RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) North Carolinians will be allowed to assemble in larger groups and gather outdoors starting Friday without having to wear their masks.
Gov. Roy Cooper announced Wednesday afternoon that the state will soon lift the outdoor mask mandate and boost mass gathering limits to 100 people indoors and 200 people outdoors, which represents a doubling from the current levels.
The Democratic governor s moves comes as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says vaccinated Americans don’t need to cover their faces outside anymore unless they are in a big crowd of strangers. Under some circumstances, unvaccinated people don t need to be masked outside, according to the CDC. ....
