‘Live’ pipe bomb diffused outside central Iowa polling place
A polling place in Ankeny was evacuated for about three hours today after a live pipe bomb was found in the parking lot.
According to photographer for
The Des Moines Register who was reporting from the scene, a crew clad in bomb suits surrounded the device and safely detonated it. Voting resumed this afternoon at the precinct where ballots were being cast in a special election in the Ankeny School District.
The Polk County Auditor issued a statement after the polls closed. Jamie Fitzgerald, in a tweet, thanked poll workers, election staff, Ankeny Police, the Iowa State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Des Moines ATF for keeping voters and poll workers safe. ....

KIDS NEED THEIR OWN SPACE TO LEARN AND GROW BEAU: NATE EVANS AND COMPANY SET UP SHOP AT PRINCIPAL PARK SATURDAY, BUILDING 150 DESKS MORE THAN THEY’VE EVER DONE IN ONE DAY FOR DES MOINES STUDENTS GOING TO SCHOOL ONLINE THIS YEAR. AS A TEACHER IN THE ANKENY SCHOOL DISTRICT, EVANS HAS ALWAYS BELIEVED IT’S EASIER FOR HIS STUDENTS TO FOCUS WHEN THEY HAVE A SPACE DEDICATED TO SCHOOL WORK. I’VE TOLD KIDS THAT SINCE I BECAME A TEACHER, BUT WITH COVID THEY TRULY NEEDED THAT. BEAU: THAT’S HOW HE CAME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR WOODWORKERS WITH A PURPOSE BUILDING AND GIVING AWAY 777 DESKS SINCE SEPTEMBER. CARS WERE LINED UP FOR OVER AN HOUR WAITING FOR THEIR TURN TO COLLECT AN EDUCATIONAL MASTERPI ....

Nurse Connor Ramirez balances a cellphone between her ear and shoulder blade as she maneuvers a patient’s bulky bed through Mary Greeley Medical Center’s back hallways. Four colleagues run alongside, toting medical equipment and the patient s belongings as the sun finally begins to peek out from a cloudy morning fog.  
“Elevator G-29,” Ramirez says over the commotion, dispatching a cleaning crew to disinfect the lift just as soon as they hang up.  
“We’re transferring a COVID patient to the ICU.”  
In Waterloo, nurse Kelly Barnett dons a gown, an N95 mask, a face shield, gloves and goggles to work on the COVID floor at UnityPoint s Allen Hospital. Barnett prayed as she drove in this morning, as she does every day. She pleaded with God to help her patients recover and begged for Iowa to turn the corner on the virus still sweeping our state.   ....
