(AP) Days after announcing a plan to buy four other hospitals for $950 million, Atlanta-based Piedmont Healthcare has signed an agreement to take over Augusta’s University Hospital system, pushing deeper into a statewide expansion. Directors of the three-hospital University system announced Wednesday that they have approved a nonbinding letter of intent. Jim Davis, CEO of the nonprofit University system, says the merger could be completed late this year or early next year. Davis tells WJBF-TV that University is likely to change its name to Piedmont-Augusta. Hospitals have been merging to seek greater market power in bargaining for reimbursement rates with insurers. University began seeking a partner in 2019, saying remaining independent would have been difficult with payment rates declining and costs rising. Piedmont also offers access to technology and data systems University can’t afford. ....

According to family members, 76-year-old John Lawrence Acosta was last seen leaving his residence in southwest Santa Maria at about 7:15 a.m. on Monday. He normally walks to the Rancho Maria Golf Course area, near Highway 1 and Black Road, and returns by 6 p.m. As of 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Acosta had not returned home. He was last seen wearing clear prescription glasses, a black hat, a light blue short sleeve shirt and black pants. ....
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) Local leaders are expressing uncertainty about whether Augusta-Richmond County should adopt an ordinance that would penalize businesses for discriminating against people. News outlets report commissioners questioned Thursday whether the ordinance would encourage harassing complaints against businesses and whether it's too harsh to put a company out of business by revoking its license for a second conviction within one year. Mayor Hardie Davis's plan would ban discrimination based on race, sexual orientation, hairstyles, military status and other characteristics at Augusta businesses. ....
