The Movie Theater shooting in louisiana, we just learned in Court Documents filed in 2008 the shoolers family describe him as quoted having a volatile mental state. Those same documents say john howsers wife removed guns from their home because of his mental state. They say he killed two people and woungdded nine in that Movie Theater in lafayette and then turned the gun on himself. Investigators say they have no motive. Nbc10s security expert Bob Brzenchek is live assistant professor at pierce college, 15 Years Experience in military, Law Enforcement and as an Intelligence Specialist and defense contractor. Bob, so how do you think Movie Theaters across the country will respond to this shooting . Well, theyre going to look at what security measures they have in place. Obviously, something failed. The Emergency Action plan at this particular Movie Theater will be analyzed and digested. What worked and what are the best practices moving forward in a collaborative effort from federal, state and local Law Enforcement to move forward to better understand what happened what failed and why. What do you mean by something failed. Should they have been searching people coming into the theater for guns . Should they have defected this guy had a gun . As you alluded to this guy had mental issues and had access to guns. Weve seen a number of facilities in Movie Theaters throughout the United States where metal detectors are instituted. Was that instituted at this Movie Theater . You can check individuals at a point of access. Thats the first thing you want to do. When some individual comes into your establishment, you have Access Points and you analyze whos coming in and assess them for a threat. All right. Well you know were americans, life goes on. A lot of people will still go to the movies this weekend, maybe with this in the backs of their minds. What can we do bob, to keep ourselves as safe as possible short of just staying inside the house . Live your life, move forward. Dont let events like this take you off kilter. Have a Crisis Action plan. Wherever you go similar to an eagles game understand what youre going to get into. Pack appropriately and respond appropriately. You also move into the Movie Theater, understand where your exit points are. You always want to have an out. Especially an incident like this. Lets talk about the gunman here. John russell howser. They we just released new information that in Court Documents his family members were concerned about what they called his volatile mental state. Is there something that didnt work out here in the system . Is there something that someone should have picked up on . As i alluded to before its obviously a failure all around. Someone in the family could have alerted police. We dont know if this gun he was using was legally obtained, but it happens, where people who have mental issues can still get weapons. What can states do to stop this from happening . Here in the commonwealth of pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania State police have instituted the act 235. With that you have a psychological check before you can get that. Thats for Armed Security officers that work out in the field. I could tell you personally, i have a concealed weapons permit out of luzerne county. Each county owns and operates the con selled weapon permit. Each county has a different Operational Plan of action moving forward. Do they roir psychological checks . Do they not . Its not consistent and i advocate for that. Nbc10 security expert, thank you for your time this morning, bob. Thank you, sir. And well continue of course, to follow developments out of last nights deadly theater shooting in louisiana.
