And they say that aguilar came in on december 10. He didnt set off any red flags. No warnings. He seemed like a perfectly normal, mild mannered, shy kind of guy and he was looking for an entry level shotgun. He said for home defense. He filled out the paperwork, the questions about his background and so forth, all the answers correct. They punched his information into the fbi data base. It immediately came back as go ahead, proceed with the sale. And so they sold it to him. Now they say that gun store, which only has been open for a few months or so, that they actually have refused to sell to people who they had questions about. But with aguilar, they said they didnt have any questions about him at all. In fact, when the atf called and said that the shotgun used in the murders up in columbia had been purchased at united gun shop, they figured he must have been shot or something himself and had the gun stolen because they couldnt conceive of this mild mannered 19year old going and doing Something Like that. His mother spoke to our partner, wnew. She said the same thing. Hes a vegetarian because he didnt want to kill animals. Never had guns in the house where im standing. She was completely mystified, horrified, in tears about what had happened. Back to you. Everyone seems to be stunned. Somebody missed something. But nobody knows what just yet. Sky 9 out over the scene near high point elementary. Rescue teams from the Anne Arundel CountyFire Department pulled that girl out and only took a couple minutes to do that. Flew to johns hopkins. No life threatening injuries. Virginia state senator, creigh deeds opens up on 60 minutes telling that heart wrenching story about his sons attack and then suicide. Peggy fox tells us, deeds is hoping his sons tragedy will lead to changes in the Mental Health system. Gus was a great kid. Perfect son. You know, its clear the system failed. Its clear that failed gus. It killed gus. In his first on camera interview about what happened to his son, gus, senator creigh deeds talked to scott pelley of 60 minutes. If he could have been hospitalized, that could have got him medicated and some sort of longterm care. Gus deeds was a talented musician and on the deans list. But soon after that, gus stopped taking care of himself. He became paranoid, obsessive and antisocial. He dropped out of college. In 2011, he was diagnosed as bipolar. At their rural farmhouse, senator deeds got rid of all their guns, instead of one hunting rifle that wasnt loaded. Later with medication, gus returned to william and mary until last fall. He came home, but didnt want treatment. Deeds had to get a court order and Sheriff Deputies took him to the er. But the emergency custody would run out in six hours and a representative of the local Community Services board told deeds they couldnt find a bed. He said that gus wasnt suicidal edhad to bring his son home. The next morning when deeds was feeding his horses, his son stabbed and slashed him. He kept coming at me. I said, dont make this worse than he is. He kept coming at me. Deeds staggered down a hill where a friend called found him and called for help. There was a gun shot wound to the head. The gun shot victim was gus. Yeah. The tragedy is exposed problems in our Mental Health system. In 2012, the Inspector Generals report found numerous problems. Recommendations were made, but were not enforced. And some believe had those recommendations been enforced, gus deeds would still be alive. George, the executive director of the Fairfax Falls church Community Services board says changes have been made, but more resources are needed for comprehensive help. Senator deeds has submitted bills that would expand the six hour emergency custody limit to 24 hours.
