Now has so many heart broken. Family, friends and coworkers are mourning the death of corrections officer Sergeant Steven floyd. And just as powerful as that grief are the accusations laying blame again and again. Were hearing this should never have happened. That refrain is coming from not only Sergeant Floyds brothers and sisters in the same line of work, but also from the inmates themselves. Im lucy noland. Im iain page. Thanks for joining us. Uprising started wednesday morning when inmates with homemade weapons took over building c at the james t. Vaughn Correctional Center during the chaos Officials Say Sergeant Floyd yelled to others running to help that it was a trap. Officials say he saved the lives of those workers and they called him a hero. It took a backhoe to smash through a make shift barricade put up by the inmates. One of their demands to turn back on the water. When that happened the inmates filled up foot lockers with the water stacked them as high and and deep as they can. Sergeant steven floyd was the corrections officer who lost his life inside the walls of james t. Vaughn correction center. He was a corrections officer. Maryland with children and grandchildren. He is the first corrections officer in delaware to be killed on the job and those who know him are struggling with the lo loss. Well, today we mourn and tomorrow and for long time Going Forward we also have to investigate what happened here, determine the facts, to make sure that it never happens aga again. The president of the corrections officer union says Sergeant Floyd died a hero. Fox 29s Chris Oconnell is at the medical Examiners Office in wilmington where procession escorted Sergeant Floyds remains. His fellow officers lining the way. Chris . Reporter thats right, lucy. The body of corrections Sergeant Steven floyd still remains here at the delaware state medical Examiners Office pending an autopsy. As funeral arrangements are still being worked out for him, there is a concern tonight from prison officials and correction authorities and Prison Inmates saying the death could have been prevented. These young men have been crying out like this for years. It just came to this point. Reporter tony dunn says the prison take over of the vaughn correctional facility was pound to happen. He should know. He spent nearly two years locked up at vaughn on charges of hindering an investigation. The investigation of his son Lionell Tucker who at this moment is behind the walls at vaughn serving a live sentence for the first degree murder of a wilmington man back in 2011. In a maximum security prison you know youll lose your mind soon. You going lose your mind. Its worser than a these stacks of letters for this son who he says suffers from mental illness. For years, tucker has written about inmate over crowding, under staffing, and poor medical care. And its not just disgruntled inmate saying that. The Corrections Officers union feels the same. Sergeant floyds death is due direct toll staffing issues that have been going on Witness Department of corrections. Reporter state prison Officials Say they are looking into staffing issues. Adding on any given day the state is down about 90 officers. When we are short staffed, we compensate with overtime. If we cant fill holes, wardens have authority to cancel visits, cancel programs, and things like that to avoid any sort of safety issues. Reporter as for dunn, hes hoping for federal investigation into the delaware prison system. He says hes not looking for any sympathy for his son, just human decency. As you sigh flags are being flown at half staff in delaware in honor of Sergeant Floyd whos being credited for saving the lives of other officers. He was warning them to get out of the building before he was held captive. So far the results and the cause of death for Sergeant Floyd have not yet been released. Iain. Chris, thank you. The woman and her family own mckeon laundromat at eighth and mckeon in south filly. She was closing up for the night. Put her 19 month old child in the back car seat. The baby had was crying because it didnt have a certain toy. Reporter police say the woman goes back into the store to get the toy and in 10 seconds a man jumped in and took off. After realizing there was a baby in the back seat, the suspect stopped three blocks away on the 900 block of emily street and left the baby strapped knots car seat on the sidewalk. One of several people who says she saw the man leave the baby and rush to help. She was crying. I carried her and she was pointing and saying mommy, mom mommy. I dont know who your mom is. You have to wait till the cops come. Police say the suspect kept going in the gray 2014 rav four. Theyre working on getting Surveillance Video that shows the suspect taking the car and leaving the baby at the other location. Luckily you had some wit about him to release the baby. Were glad for that but obviously were still looking for him and he will be charged accordingly. The woman says shes glad to see mom and baby together again. Thank god the baby is safe. It all happened yesterday when a man with a gun followed the woman into a bathroom at upper darby low laundromat when the suspect identified as 23yearold due quon raheem brooks hell the victim inside she made a quick decision to grab the gun in the struggle it went off and shot the suspect in the arm. The victim then got away and ran to nearby 7eleven for help. The victim says those scary moments she realized it was her or him.
