hours for the most part. that is where we'll see the bulk of the rain. we will see more rain later on today. we have a chance some of more rain later on today. the bulk of the rain will be during the morning hours until late morning, maybe around noon. let's take a look at the radar. we'll show you what is going on out there as we continue to see some areas of heavy rain particularly different radars are showing it differently. but what we are seeing now is some rainfall, much of it heavy, particularly down across southern portions of the area. you can see there is one main body of rain out there. there is a lot of it. it will take a few hours for this to get through but then once it does, we'll see clouds and maybe the occasional shower or thunderstorm later on. current temperatures around the region, upper 60s and low 70s. it is 72 degrees right now in the district. 70 out at 69degrees in baltimore. here is your forecast for today. looks like this. lots of clouds around. rain showers particularly in the morning, maybe an occasional clap of thunder, a little bit of lightning here and there. temperatures today will top out in the upper 70s and low 80s. take the umbrella with are following a developing story out of libya this morning where nine civilians were killed when a nato air strike went wrong. two of the victims are children. nato says a weapons systems failure may be behind the sunday bombing after residential neighborhood. in a statement, nato says it regrets the loss of innocent civilian lives and takes great care in conducting strings. libya's foreign minister is calling for a global jihad against the west as retaliation for the strikes. a bomb threat at reagan national airport. >> it shut down the airport for about 20 minutes. a woman at a day ton, highway high ticket counter said an explosive device was on a u.s. airways flight bound to reagan yesterday. that flight touched down around 1:00 p.m. vehicle ours searched the plane for four hours on the tarmac but found nothing. it didn't seem to bother travelers when they heard the news of the scare. >> i think the airline has a responsibility to public safety as well as a responsibility to getting us there on time. so i can appreciate it might be difficult for them. >> i think they need to be aware of things and if it messes our travel plans up, i don't have any problem with that. >> things are back to normal this morning. the woman who made the threat is being evaluated at a psychiatric hospital. a man who set off a scare and commuter chaos friday near the pentagon could go before a judge today. he was discovered inside arlington national cemetery several hours after it closed. police initially thought he was carrying a backpack filled with bomb-making material but later determined the items were not explosives. he is a marine corps reservist. he was detained for trespassing after becoming uncooperatey but so far has not been charged. other top stories, the search continues for a driver who struck a police officer and two other people t happened in a parking lot in seat pleasant early sunday morning. it was outside of a nightclub. the car hit the officer, a security guard and one other person and then took off. the officer opened fire but the car kept going. it was later found with a bullet hole in the rear window. but nobody was inside. a homicide investigation is under way in northeast tease and the victim may have been bound in duct tape. police were called out to the scene last night on levis street just west of bladensburg road and a little north of florida avenue. no word yet on the identity of the victim but a neighbor tells fox 5 they believe he was involved in some sort of an altercation sometime in the past few days. a barbecue grill is to blame for a house fire in beltsville yesterday. somebody was lighting the grill on the patio when the fire got out of control, spread to the home and unfortunately destroyed most of that house. thrrn two -- there were two adults and five children in the home at the time and they all made it out okay. first lady michelle obama today leaves washington for a week-long visit to africa. mrs.obama is traveling to south africa and botswana. the first lady talks about her trip to engage young people in solving the problem of the future. the white house will be updating mrs. obama's trip on facebook and twitter. the first lady is being joined on the trip by daughters sasha and malia, her mother, a niece and a nephew. coming up next, back the surge of water being released from upstream alzheimer's. authorities say the water started pouring over the levees on saturday night in two counties flooding farmland and numerous homes and cabins. it has forced the closure of a nearby highway. hundreds more people are being forced from their homes in arizona as wildfires spread in the certain part of the state. the new vacs were near the town of sierra vista where the so- called monument fire had already forced 7,000 people to flee. now, another 1500 are being asked to leave. this is after the fire jump ad a highway sunday. so far, 44 homes have been lost to the wildfires. still head, it is a movie star mecca but more hollywood productions are hightailing it out of tinseltown and choosing to take their business elsewhere. a morning's business beat. >> good morning. >> stocks broke their losing streak on friday but now european debt it seems like is still weighing down the market. what do we expect? >> dow futures are lower by 50 or so points right now but it was a winning week, the first winning week since april. last week, greece still the number one enemy right now for the markets. finance ministers from the euro zone meeting and essentially delaying their decision to reinstate loans to help bail out greece once again. that is weighing on the markets. it's huge week in term of economic data. we get the gdp numbers this woke and the interest rate decision by the fed and tons of housing reports are out so the bulls will have a lot to respond to this week. >> i know a lot of people watching thosement rest rates very carefully n terms of housing news, we are talking about foreclosures actually few years ago, they were coming down fast and hard and now it seems like things have slowed a little bit. what is going on? >> there has been a change in mennality as well t used to be if you were facing foreclosure, you were nervous, you couldn't sleep at night. now, things have changed. there is a story in the "new york times" that says that banks and lenders in absolutely no hurry to add more distressed property to their books and they are kind of just letting people stay in their homes a little bit long are because they are already under fire for the shoddy mortgages. if you look at the numbers, and this is according to lps allied analytics, it is a real estate data firm. they found in new york and new jersey, it would take lendsers about half a century to repossess all the the foreclosed homes on their books and the numbers although they are really high in new york and new jersey, they are about 10 years from many other states. the foreclosure problem is still a big problem but people are staying in that you are homes a lot longer. >> thank you for talking to us this morning. >> thank 71 degrees now here in washington. 71 in the district. 68 in baltimore. 69 at dulles airport so temperatures have dropped off a little bit more during these early-morning hours. forecast for today, lots of clouds around. showers and thunderstorms likely. look if i high today of about 81 degrees here in the district. we'll look for some highs in the 70s in areas out to our west and then some more developing story, a deadly stabbing in the district. >> it happened on the 100 block of levis street in the trinidad section of northeast. stacy cohan just arrived on the scene. >> reporter: i can tell that you the d.c. police still have the area taped off as they have more investigating to do inside this rowhouse. they discovered this homicide yesterday actually in the afternoon. we were told one person was stabbed to death. the neighbors say this same paren was perhaps assaulted just a few days ago. there was duct tape found on part of the victim's body. we do not have a name or identity of this person or any suspect or motive. but detectives are still on the scene. this is a very active investigation. once again, one person found dead yesterday evening here in the trinidad section of at a dayton, ohio ticket counter said an explosive device was on a u.s. airways plane bound for reagan yesterday. investigators searched the plane for four hours on the tarmac but found nothing. the expected to take up the issue sometime this year. to the economy now, ongoing deficit talk move into the eighth week on capitol hill as lawmakers debate over how to fix the nation's debt problems. in republicans say up the age for enseattlement eligibility. democrats say just make smaller reforms. this is the heart of the problem. if they are going to save trillions, they will have to come up with some type of agreement on entitlements. they want overall deal in lace by the end of june. congress has a month to vote to before the treasury secretary says he runs out of money to participate bills loore bng hit t hardest.  headlines this morning, new information about a shooting signed a pharmacy on long island. four people were killed during an apparent robbery. suffolk county police say two customers and two employees were shot to death. one of the employees was a 17- year-old girl. this happened yesterday morning in medford, about 60 miles east of new york seat. kiddie pools can be dangerous. a new study says during the warm weather months, one child dies every five days in a portable fool. from 2001 to 2009, 212 children under the age of five died in pools. the study calls if new safety devices for kiddie pools. the soak of pool and spa professionals says the finings draw atinge to the need to constant adult supervision. in the nation's southwest region, high winds are kicking up fueling the dangerous wildfires. firefighters are battling flames from east texas to the west coast. anita vogel is following the latest developments. texas is another state grappling with massive fires. >> this has been an ongoing thing to the last couple of months. it is dry out and the smallestling fire with the wind and just like today, it doesn't take long for it to spread real houston, this fire is burning in the davey crockett national forest. it has charred two counties so far. >> the wind and humidity are not working in our favor. >> reporter: the flame have consumed more than 15,000 auctioners in just a few does. officials say it has become the third largest fire in state history. some say they're staying put until the danger is closer. >> we ain't leaving in the fire is in the backyard for good. when we know it is going to hit the house, we'll leave. until then, we are staying. >> reporter: thick black smoke greets people in see aura vista, arizona. they've harbor, hains point and you can see just gray, misty conditions. we have fog being reported across portions of the region as. we a gray start to the day and a wet start to the day too. here is a look at the hd radar. what we are seeing across the region is rain activity. some run showers coming through the washington area. it break up as you head off to the north and west but still more shower activity to deal with. this will be a morning-long event. i think it wraps up around mid- to late morning before it gets out of here. then can't rule out a couple more showers but we should see improving conditions as the day progresses. your weather headlines, early rain. thunderstorm were a possibility but i really haven't seen that kind of activity this morning. our huge is on the rise. it is already over 80% for this morning so that is different from the last couple of days. beyond that, hot temperatures on the way. we'll see our highs not today but tomorrow and wednesday and thursday once again into the 90s. it will be really hot around here on wednesday. summer officially arrives tomorrow at 1:16 in the afternoon. temperatures around the region look like this. in the pressing questions, weather-related or otherwise. today's question comes from francis zell in springfield, virginia. she writes, i often see white streak in the sky where airplanes have been but not always. what doesn't this trail appear all the time? is it due to temperatures? frances, you are speaking of contrails in the sky. it kind of has to do with temperatures. it has to do with the -- swat air is like in the upper levels of the sphor where the plane are flying around. these are called contrails. jets leave these in that you are wake for the same reason can you sometimes see your breath. the homehuntertv.com humid exhaust from jet engines mixes with the atmosphere. water vapor contains in the jet exhaust condenses and may freeze and forge a cloud very similar to the one that your hot breath makes on a cold day. >> interesting. >> there you go. now, what is interesting is, depending on a plane's altitude and temperature and humidity of the atmosphere, contrails may vary this their thickness, extent and duration. tucker, this actually can be used to help predict the weather in a way, correct? >> certainly, can you tell that the atmosphere is very humid for the contrail has a tendency to hang for a long period of time. that will tell you that there is a lot of water in the upper areas of the atmosphere and the higher potential for rain and maybe some thunderstorm activity. let's mention winds. if winds are really blowing in the upper layers, that will disperse it. >> so that is why you see it. conversely, if the contrawl doesn't last very long, not a lot of humidity up there and it will probably be dry. >> you see them in the sky and you know that sometimes they stick around so it is neat to know you could actually observe and make some predictions. >> there are theorists out there that say these are chemical trails that the government puts out there to control the we are. >> we have abeen instructed by government not to discuss that. >> you can google it. there is a large community of people who do believe that? >> a large community of people? >> yeah. >> maybe a small community, very active. >> tucker, you have something else to work in here? >> yes, pretty good as you cross the 14th street bridge into the district. now, in maryland, 95 southbound, we are starting to see some delays there as you leave 212 heading toward the beltway. the out are loop is heavy and slow from college park into silver spring. also want to mention, metrorail on the red line at tacoma, trains single tracking because of an incident there. single tracking between
