Mirrored similar events around the country, including outside the nations capitol. All in response to Police Shootings in recent days caught on camera in louisianna and minnesota. As Dallas Police continue to investigate tonight, the police chief said the devisive necessary must stop. We dont feel much support most days lets not make today most days. Learning more about the shoot here carried out the deadly attack in dallas, a friend of Micah Xavier Johnson told the Associated Press he didnt see this coming. Said johnson was well educated and wasnt really political. Said he saw johnson about a week ago, and said that johnson was not a violent man. He was 25, grew up in the dallas suburb of mosk. Te, had one tour of duty in afghanistan, he worked as a carpenter, and builder, during his army service wh last year. Police say they believed johnson was the loan shooter in the attack. Tragedy in dallas is having huge impact people across the nation hitting close to home. Tonight we have Live Team Coverage and fox5s matt ackland live at the museum local reaction to the Dallas Police shooting, Lindsay Watts is at the department of justice, where a protest is being held. But we will start with paul wagner, who is live in northeast, where local police are talking about the tension they are facing. Paul . Laura, im in northeast, the deanwood area of northeast dc, at a block party, block party put on by dc Police Called beat the streets way for dc police to engage to meet the Community Meet with the people that they work with every single day giving away free food, music here, the Police Officers are even encouraged i think the rain put damper on this little bit, dont have the crowds out here we expect. Told me police really hasnt changed that much over the years, but the atmosphere certainly has. Dc Police Officers we talked to today on the phone, in the street, and on social media, all had similar reactions to what happened in dallas. Their hearts are heavy, but the work goes on. After hearing what was going on last night, obviously, it is a painful time for the Law EnforcementCommunity Around the country. Here in d. C. , no different. You know, our officers, obviously, follow the news, and see whats going on, you know, they have their concerns, as well. Many officers we spoke with said they feel like theyve become targets, which makes things difficult for their loved ones at home. What struck me the most is my family. Every day i get up, every day all every us get up, we come to work, and we d times. We just come here, do our job, we answer the radio, do what we got to do one at a time. Our families home suffering, today, i must have gotten telephone calls from family or friends, are you doing okay, are you all right, keep your head up, you know, we support you. And thats the nice part. But at the end of the day, families are the ones that really suffer. At the memorial today, people left messages, notes, and flowers for the officers in dallas. While on the street, we could see dc Police Officers going about their duties, just like they do every day. But in the age of social media, officers feel theyre always being second guessed, and that citizens want answers now, no waiting. Tell us what happened now. Giving too much power, too much own us to the one or 2 of the people that are saying were bad, Police Offers remembers not doing their job them have too much of a voice. It is not that way. On facebook today, dc police captain, Robert Glover wrote this our role call was somber this morning, our command Conference Call was somber. But we remain committed doing our duty without prejudice or reservation. Our communities have offered an outpouring of support already wigs a testimony to the departments continued effort to build trusting relationships, blue team, these are truly challenging times. Stay the court, be safe. Out of abundance of caution police chief cathy lanier ordered all officers patrol in pairs today until further notice that we saw that all over the city today, out here, at beat the streets, block party, again, not as many people as they would hope would come out, i think again, the rain kind of put a dam perron things, but lot of fun out here, the kids are having great time. Painted, theyre interacting with the cops, listening to the music thats going on. Live in northeast, paul wagner, fox5 local news. District leaders say theyre heart broken over what had taken place in dallas this afternoon dc mayor mural bowser and police chief cathy lanier laid a wreath at the Law Enforcement memorial in northwest. That memorial honors the 20,000 Law Enforcement officers who had died in the line of duty over the years. The five Police Deaths in dallas bridges to 26 the number of officers killed so far this year. Thats a 44 increase over last year. Many people are talking about the violence, that has erupt in the week in minnisota, louisianna, now texas, and some are leaving detailed opinionated messages on social media. All over social media. And others are speaking with their coworkers and their neighbors, one place that is attracting many people to discussions today is right out in front of the museum in northwest dc. Fox5s matt ackland joins us live from there with more, matt . Reporter hi, laura, sarah, this definitely is a nationwide conversation, everyone is talking about it, you can see it right here in front of the museum. As you well know, these are the front page papers from all over the country. Now i just want to gave you a look at what is being shown here. This is from the dallas morning news. This picture hereof this officer hugging a woman is an ap picture that weve seen on so many of the front pages, and then right over here, this is another heart breaking picture of the shooting victim and minnesota. Today, earlier, if we can take you to video, you can see people gathered here all day, many folks were having a conversation as they looked at the headlines, red some of the articles here. Everyone is really feeling the pain from the last week. And here is what some of them had to say to us earlier today. Take a listen. It is actually horrible. There is no words to it. Everybody seems to feeling horrified across the nation, almost unified response to all of the incidents that have happened in the last few days, you know, not only the dallas shooting last night, but baton rouge, minnesota, everybody just outraged by it. It seems like it is something across the nation were seeing the same reaction at what point do we come together to deal with it . Reporter so many people once again talking about the violence this last week, and people from far away, those ladies, one of them, the mother, was from washington state. Just want to give you an idea, you are all here, you didnt know i was going to come up to you, but how are you feeling about the tragedies this week . It is really sad. Yes . Yes, did you come and look at some of the headlines yourself . Yes, we were here this morning, crazy to see all of the defendant rent papers had everything about the dallas news. Where are you from . Sacramento, california. So thats the latest, laura, all day long people have been gathering here and then as you know just couple of blocks away from here, about two blocks, this way, is the Law Enforcement national memorial. The people have been gathering there, as well. Live in the district, matt ackland, fox5 local news. Right now protesters with black lives matter are gathering in front of the Justice Department. It is one of several protests planned for tonight and this weekend. Fox5s Lindsay Watts is thereto give us a look, lindsay . Reporter sarah, laura, right now almost as many Police Officers here as protesters. Supposed to start at 5 00. People are just really starting to get here. When this does get underway, it certainly will be very secure, you can see all of the officers lined up behind me, in front of the department of justice. Over here, the squad cars stretched down the block, i think there is about ten of them park here. And then just on the sidewalk there you can see protesters, that have really, that group is only a handful of people, has grown in just the last minute or two. Im here now with one of the very first people to arrive. This is gabriela, telling me you came in from prince georges county. Why did you want to be here . Well, i think mainly why i want to be here because triple minority, africanamerican, hispanic, im woman. I stands for black lives and black lives matter, not just a protest march but also a movement, and to show people can coexist, come together, stand for what they believe in. And also to show that like we stand with what happened to the Police Officers and their families, like there is no like one side, like we all come together and just be here in unity. Right. I think thats an important point, on media and tv. You dont have to pick a side. You can only be pro black lives or propolice. You can be equally outraged with the violence that weve seen in minnesota, louisianna, as well as in dall a. Yes it, doesnt have to be a war on black america or war on police. The violence is definitely a disappointing factor in it. Fighting fire with fire will only create a bigger fire. Definitely just being here, just standing, you know, with the people and come together and just support black lives. You were at the protest last night in d. C. Yes. At the same time that that massacre was going on in dallas. What were you feeling when you heard about that . Well, the protest had a lot of excitement, entheusiasm, so many people, there the congress, the congressmen came out and spoke. It was definitely very empowering, but the thing about these protests is that like they have so much power and entheusiasm, but they lost a goal or lack a purpose. They were speaking to us, like we support you, we support black lives, but we didnt have anything to present to them. Then when i heard this news about the Police Officers, i was shocked. And i was almost like, wow, like this is shock being, but at the same time surprised. There is so much going on, it is such a hype going on, like there is so much violence, and there is just a lot of also a lot of talk. Not a lot of walk. So it was definitely and disappointing, yet i wasnt that surprised. Scary time, absolutely. Well, thank you for speaking with me. Thank you. As we mentioned, one of multiple protests planned for this weekend, we know of two more that are going on tonight, one in atlanta, another in least lease berg, where protesters gathered at the white house, they marched to the capitol. That was peaceful. We are hoping to see additional demonstrations well be seeing throughout the weekends are, as well. For now live in northwest, Lindsay Watts, fox5 local news. Absolutely, hope they are, we dont need any more of this at all. We dont. Up ahead, more violence spreading across the country. Man opens fire on drivers on the highway. What officials are saying about that shooters motive. And social Media Companies in the hot seat tonight. What people are saying about twitter, google, and facebook, as antipolice threats are running rampid on line. Hey, gwen . Some have you seen some storms tonight, some of you nothing. Lets take a look at radar, show you where things are right now as far as all of the active weather is concerned. And you can see, actually now moving their way across the bay, and thats where theyre seeing a lot of lightning, now, there was a lot of ground to cloud lightning hitting annapolis little earlier, areas right through along th shore, now things have casino of moved little more toward the south and across the chesapeake bay, and thats where we have Marine Warnings in effect right now as these head to the east, at about 25 miles an hour. I cant see things wont fire up, so we have to watch it. As least until sunset, thats when things will start to calm down. Now, still under slight risk for Severe Weather by the storm prediction center, that hasnt changed at all. Temperatures well, yes, hot one, right now those temperatures are still into the 80s and the 90s. The rain has helped to cool things down little bit. So humidity not quite as bad. 80 degrees right now at dc. Weve got 81 degrees at baltimore. 90 degrees at manassas, 86 degrees as far as dullos is concerned. So for tonight, overnight low, 77 degrees, partly cloudy, well see the storm starting to decrease once we get rid of the sun, at least, when sunset occurs, thats at least a good improvement. Winds to the west five to 10 Miles Per Hour moving into the overnight hours. We have fireworks to talk about, in gaithersburg, rescheduled for tonight, hitting at about 9 00 tonight, and at that pointy do anticipate that things will be fine for those fireworks.
