Daytona 500 for the first time. Bunch of guys up here trying to win their first race. We have a couple of 500 champions with logano and bayne up here so we have a nice mix in the front. Vince . Its hard to believe joey logano has been in the cup series for eight years already. Although he got plenty of attention as a much publicized 18yearold, now hes getting plenty of respect in the kbraj as one of the veterans as jeff noted. Already has one daytona 500 trophy, was the championship runner up last season. Mike, you mentioned the loose wheel. Todd gordon told me this week we have to execute in every facet, and thats including dodging the bullet if we have a problem. Weve got to execute and recover and they have done just that from that loose wheel early. They have, indeed, recovered and now theyre battling for another daytona 500 win. Tremendous comeback for logano and team from that loose wheel early. Thats what the best teams do. When you talk about Jimmie Johnson winning championships with hendrick and other champions that weve seen. Kyle busch, they know how to come back to recover, never give up. Yeah, it is. This is a battle. This is a fight. I mean, these guys are fighting for everything theyre worth right now and theyre putting it all on the line. Theyre willing to wreck each other to get into victory lane. Kyle larson in the 42 has been side by side with logano in the last eight laps. Cant get ahead, cant clear him. What needs to happen for this log jam to change . Its going to change. Not that. Its going to change right now because Chase Elliott got a big run behind joey logano in the 22. This is the time when joey is fine with the 24 hitting him. You can push me out to the lead all you want, just dont run into the side of me. It looks like the 42 isnt getting enough help from behind. He needs the 41, the 6, the 5, all of them to stack up and be right on top of one another to get a big enough push to go to the front. There a chevrolets but theres a 41. Theres a bunch of hungry chevrolets lined up behind him. Theres truex. Hes fought his way back into the picture. Dont count him out yet. No, sir. The average age of the top three, 23. Theres that move by truex right there. Watch Austin Dillon go with him. Boy, menard, did he oh, he made a big mistake right there. Thats going to cost him dearly. He was hanging right there, too. Gung ho for the pushing. Watching the 24. I think that spotter keeping an eye on that 24. 31 laps to go. Joey logano trying to hold on. Chase elliott, kyle larson and martin truex. Were going to keep it right here. Sfx engine revving silence im back hasta la vista, baby. Mobile strike download and play now. Free, from the app store. Getting food to hungry Older Americans cannot stop and it wont. Hey, these are our parents and grandparents out there. Lets Start Talking about how we can really get to the route of the problem. Hey, we hear you. Fighting hunger doesnt stop here. Im working with aarp foundations drive to end hunger team to change the National Conversation around hunger, bring experts together, and make programs better than ever. If you dont think were in this together when you think aarp, then you dont know aarp. Learn more at aarp. Org possibilities. Okay, thats a onepiece breast. Five dollars. Hmm, pot pie costs you five bucks. Thats a famous bowl, five bills. Tenders for a fiver. And thats my twopiece original recipe, thats five real meals, each for five bucks. Kfc, its Finger Lickin good. Chase elliott in the 24 chevrolet pulled hard on the outside with a little drafting help from martin truex and the son of twotime 500 winner bill elliott forged back to the lead, albeit briefly. As logano storms back on the inside. This is a battle right ford versus chevrolet with a toyota back there. Manufacturer battle, not only that, but these guys, joey logano is trying to win his second daytona 500. You saw what materialized to make that happen. Martin truex jr. , he gets a big run on the outside. Chase elliott moves up in front of him. Thats all it took. Now he got into the back behind the 22, got a big draft and he took advantage of that big run he had and went to the outside. Didnt clear him but he got there. You were riding with the 3, Austin Dillon in third. His grandfather, Richard Childress, was the owner when Dale Earnhardt finally took the 3 to victory lane in 1998. Now larry and i have discussed fuel. Is it a concern for anybody on pit lane, matt . It certainly is for the 41 of kurt busch. I spoke to tony gibson. He said at this point they are half a lap short. Gibson told me he talked to tony stewart. With all of stewarts experience as far as how much he can save stewart said where kurt is running, you are matted. Youre not saving anything at that point. Thats exactly right. Youll get run over. You have to stay wide open. The 41 of kurt busch youre talking about. The one in the best position is the 3 car of Austin Dillon. He stayed for an extended time on pit road. He packed it with fuel. I think if anyone has any extra fuel, its Austin Dillon. Elliott moved out a little bit. Tried to help martin i think a tad. I like where that 24 is. Hes sitting in the cat birds seat now. 78, remember, he lost the daytona 500 by, what, a half a foot. Six inches maybe. He was ahead 15 feet from the start finish line and lost it in the closest daytona 500 finish ever. Ask you. Were these crew chiefs were they right on the edge. Were they banking on cautions to come out . Weve seen so many today. Yeah, you know were lurking because if you look at the last ten daytona 500s, jeff, the last caution came at the average of lap 193 with seven to go. Eight times in the final ten laps i think we know when we get to 10 to 15 to go it would be a miracle if we go caution free. I think youre right, larry. All right. For more on fuel heres vince. Well, Austin Dillon is running up there towards the front. You see him in the 3 car behind logano. They say theyre good on fuel. Remember, they took the long pit stop even though they had right side tires. They lost eight stops but they stayed extra long in the box to make sure they packed it full of fuel. They say theyre good to go. The other teams in my area, the 22 of logano, the 24 of Chase Elliott, the 78 of when i asked them they were all noncommittal. Last win for Richard Childress racing, phoenix, november 2013, 109 races ago. Lets listen in to team 24 and their young driver. Outside. Top is loose. Clear by two now. The tops coming. Kurt about to get a run. Logano two over the 3. Nose out top. Now even with him. Bottom nosed out. Bottom nosed out. Back. The tops tighter. Call voice ofdodge, the spotter. He was my spotter when i drove thcar. Nothing better than having experience on that roof to help walk you through these moments because right now Chase Elliotts trying to figure out which lane do i need to go with. What he does, he punches the hole. He jumps up to one lane. That keeps those two cars side by side behind him not allowing either one of them to get a run. Id be blocking the outside lane right now because it is far more organized than that inside. The question is, can Chase Elliott continue this dance for 21 more laps to win the 500. upbeat drum music toyota. Lets go places. [car engine failing to start] [clicking of ignition] uh wha woof eeh woof wuh [silence] [engine roars to life] [dog howls] dramatic opera music swells from radio [howling continues] 20 years ago jeff gordon won his first daytona 500 in the hendrick number 24 chevrolet. Here is Chase Elliott trying to win his first. 17 laps to go as they come to the line. Past some slower cars. The damaged cars of david ragan and Kevin Harvick and now its a single car or single line draft. Single file. Elliott, you think about the week hes had. He won the pole, he won his qualifying race and he might be in the position to win this daytona 500. That would be his first win. What a great first win. I won the daytona my brother did that. Amazing win. Ive just got to believe everybody is settling in right now and when we get inside ten to go its not going to go quite the way it is right now. I dont like running this high line at this stage of the race. I think that works good in the middle portion of the race. You get everybody to follow along. You can, you know, kind of settle in, get nicean this is not that time. Its getting ready to get wild and crazy. All they have to do is drop below in the corner. If anybody follows you, youre going to the back. Thats what youre worried about. Truex has a little body damage so im not sure how strong he would be if he can get out there. Lets listen in to the 78. Still straight line. Everybody straight line. Nobodys moving. Thats clayton hughes, the spotter. Still straight line. Still straight. 15 to go. He might stay in line right now, but in the next five or six laps i believe thats when youre going to start to see some of these further back make some moves. You know what i dhaul . A setup. Yes, thats what im afraid of. Eve line. Nobody traveling. I call this half. Still straight line, bud. Still straight. You heard martin truex the driver say, i cant believe it. Some drivers like a lot of information. Some drivers want just the facts. Whatever they do still straight. Still straight. Listen to how calm they are. No panic. Theyre leaving that to the driver. Let him do the panicking. I just wonder how much that damage on the right front of truexs car would slow him down if he did look out. A set of three real slow. Running the bottom. Plenty of room. I mean, maybe Chase Elliott feels confident enough that he can block that move if they go to the inside, but to me its a lot easier to make somebody go to the high line and the long way around you and usually most people are going to hedge th hes running high, all it takes is one of those cars, at least the 78 in second to drop down and easily you can get inside of him. Lets drop back one more spot and listen to kurt busch and his stewarthaas ford team. Hows the fuel . Youll flip your switch with one to go. Flip the switch with one to go. Half a lap short on the fuel. Half a lap short. What these fuel cells have, they have two electric pumps and you run one right now and it actually has a Little Reservoir over there so they know how far they can go when they throw that second electric fuel pump up. Almost like a reserve tank, right . Exactly. How many did he say to go when they flip that. One to go. That gives him one lap. Hopefully it gives him one lap. Chase elliott continues to lead as they work slower traffic. Is he in the cat birds seat or is well, i think he needs to be and ill tell you why. The only reason i think that is because i dont think truex has the car to jump out and make the pass. I think that fender damage he has, he can draft along with chase. I like being up front, being in the lead. You know that theyre going to get side by side somebody is going to make a big move, its just whether or not you can get in front of it. If they start racing one another behind you youre in an even better position. Its when they all line up and decide to make that move and go together to try to shuffle you back. A little bit of what jeff was talking about, think of matt kenseth last year coming to the checkered flag and denny hamlin dove under matt kenseth, got him loose and was able to win the race. That could happen in this situation. The other thing that i want to if im eddie dehan, dont get too far dont allow them to get too far back and get a big run on you. Chevrolets coming out of the second pack and pulling up. When they get there this will cause a little bit more energy. Youll see the cars sort of surge forward and get some big runs so when that happens youve got to be prepared. Youre going to feel a little bit more of some pushing and pulling from that long stream of cars. Last time by 46. 73. See what it is this time. Coming to the line, ten laps to go. Man. How long do they plan to wait . Not that they cant make a run on him right now. They can. They dont want to make it too early. Turn it back on for a minute. In 58 prior daytona 500s, ten times the race has been decided with a last lap pass. Last time by they were here goes one. Menard . We knew that back. You cant wait until two or three to go. If youre going to try to make a move, youve got to start making a move now. Blaney moved down to pick up the three chevrolets, menard, allmendinger and dillon. Now blaney by himself. Side by side back there. That can only help Chase Elliott. These three cars, truex jr. , kurt busch, the 42 of larson, they cannot get enough energy by themselves. They need help. They need other cars pushing in order to get enough of a run to go by him. Heres the Second Place Team truex on fuel. Everybodys trying to save a little pfuhl i think is whats going on. What do we need . Were right at it. Anything you can save is what weve got to the good. I sa okay. Oming to eight laps t. In that draft are 11 cars. Any one of which could win the 500. The only ones i can think of that are set for fuel are some of these further back. Joey logano, we know he doesnt want to save fuel. Theres no way he feels like he can win the race back there. Maybe hes letting off saving fuel. I really dont think theyre saving fuel. I dont either. Thats the furthest thing from his mind. If i run out of fuel, i run out of fuel. I come here to race. I just wondered if anybody has enough get up and go to pull around and pass that 24 car. I dont think they do. Look at this. All theyve got to do all truex has to do is when we enter into the corner and 24 goes up high, he just has to turn down to the bottom and him off guard but he needs somebody to go with him. The 1 preferably. What are you going to do . Youre Chase Elliott. Youve made your bed. Youre committed to the top line. I would start running the bottom. Drop to the bottom now . Im not real comfortable running this high lane now. Guys, we talked about it at the top of the show. Im on the pit box. This is the daytona 500. No more saving fuel. If you run out, you run out. This is the biggest race of the year. Thats it, brother. Chase elliott held the lead for the final 23 laps to win his duel race at the starting lineup and in that front 11 cars, only that yellow car at the bottom, joey logano, has driven by a driver who has won the 500. Mike, i won this race in 1989 and i held my breath for one whole lap because they said i couldnt make it, but i was determined to win the daytona 500 that day and we did. Thats what youre s right now. These guys are determined to win this race. Vince . Chase elliotts crew chief Alan Gustafson told me earlier today when we were talking about the race playing out very similar to the way it is playing out leading in the late stages. We can control our execution and we cant control our luck and you need plenty of it to win here. He said, this race is grueling mentally because theres always drama for you at every turn and you Better Believe that stomach is churning right now on the crew chief. Five laps to go, and in the top nine there is only one driver who has never won in what is now the Monster Energy nascar cup series and hes the leader. This could be what a great week this would be for that 24 car. Jeff, he won the pole. He won his qualifying race and hes got a pretty good chance of winning this 500. Hes got an excellent chance. Its anywhere but over now. We have way too much racing to go. Five laps in long ways. Baby, i dont know. I think that 24 is 24 carat gold today. I hope youre right. Hes looking pretty good. Ill take my if im going to go anywhere, i want to be where he is. Guess who the last driver was to win the pole, win the thursday qualifying race and win the daytona 500 . His son is in the lead. Bill elliott. Oh, wow. Whew well, it wont be long now until we know. Bill has taught this young manuel no matter what the results end up here today. Theres that little lead you were talking about. He got a little bit out in front of the 78 and the 41. That doesnt bother Chase Elliott too much because theres another gap back to the 42. Theyve all got to stack up and then a big gap between the 78 and 24. I think that martin look at this, 42 of larsson is making a move. This is going to change everything right here. Well, it would if somebody goes with him. He slid up. Right in there. What a slide job. We know that 42 scar aggressive. How cool is that . He drove down there. They didnt go with him. Able to slide up there and never lose any momentum. I think that surprised kurt busch. I think that surprised kyle larson. I think he was surprised nobody went with him. Joey logano to the inside. Hell get a little help maybe from ryan blaney. Side draft there. 42, youve got an aggressive young man that might be willing to push that 78. Hes got a run. Hes going out of fuel. Out of fuel. Oh, no oh, no. Youre kidding . Great opportunity for martin truex jr. Here. Now the question is can the 78 hold these guys off. Can he do it . Two laps to go. Sounds like maybe just stumbled a little bit. He was able to flip that switch for that reserve. Now its back running just lost all the mo larsson. Kyle larson to the bottom for the lead. Hes going to clear him. Here comes the 41 now, big run. The race is on now, boys. Its anybodys race now. Wow. Again, i dont like this high line. I just think you get too many opportunities to get a run and make moves on the inside. Theres a guy right there running in second right now thats finished third in this thing three times. The white flag waves one lap to go sponsored by credit one bank. When i think of experience and knowledge here at daytona, i think of kurt busch. Hes been so close so many times. Pushed his teammate here one time. Is anybody going to help him. The 21, where did he come from . Ryan blaney, what a surprise. With logano and blaney. The who else is going to run out . 21. Im not too sure. Hes okay. The 41 can get up behind the 21, he might get there. This might be kurt buschs day. Looks like hes going to come home a winner. Kurt busch has been the bridesmaid in the daytona 500. Here they come off of turn four from the final time. From las vegas the 2004 champion of the series, kurt busch for gene haas and tony stewart wins the daytona 500. First time hes won the 500, what about that . He pushed his penske teammate to victory. Thats the old man. Tony gibson. Yes hes too old to get that excited. Grew up down the street from Daytona International speedway. Now goes to victory lane. I love you guys. Thank you. Thank you. Tony gibson has been in this sport a long, long time. Hes been the best crew chief for kurt busch that kurt could have. For kurt busch its his 29 ths career win. First win in 17 tries in the 500. Matt is with the winning crew chief. His dad used to build race cars and run new smyrna. Your mom peggy used to sell tickets at the Daytona International speedway. This is special can you even describe for you as a crew chief to win at your home track. Oh, this is unbelievable. I mean, my dad my dad got me started in all of this and my mom, my dad. We sacrificed everything. He put us in racing and, you know, i cant thank him enough. Thanks, dad and mom, i love you. My wife beth, my daughter all my brothers, mark and peppie. I have a great family. Its so emotional. To come to our home track and win, unbelievable. Team owner tony stuart, 17 starts in the 500 but today he will go to victory lane as an owner. Theres sunoco fueling victory. Talking about fueling victory. You had to have enough of it today. I started to say that was tony running out there and he doesnt run that fast. Isnt that amazing, that raw emotion. Theyve had a tough week. Theyve had to repair that car. Kurts one of our three driver newlyweds a wrong brad keselowski, Dale Earnhardt jr. And it aint over until its over, guys. For the 11th time, a lastlap pass decides the kurt busch led only the last lap. Mike, i think i dont know how many years its been that weve had a different winner down there. Like 12, 15 years weve had a different winner. I think kurt busch has come down here and led a lot of laps in the pass and today he only needed to win that one. Back to matt. Celebration out on the front stretch. Smoke, so much went into this off season moving over to ford. So much effort, hard work. Can you describe from the owners standpoint what this means to you to win the daytona 500 . I ran this dam race 18 years and couldnt win it so finally won it as an owner. To watch kurt, what an awesome job those last couple of laps. You didnt really know what was going to happen. Guys were trying different things. You know, probably the most patient race ive ever watch kurt busch run. He deserved that. Proud of everybody. Great day for Ford Performance and everybody at stewarthaas i think this finally gets gene haas all this is awesome, man. Congratulations. Thanks, bad. Tony heads for victory lane to celebrate as we take a look at todays 5hour Energy Extra Strength big move of the race. Kyle larson just couldnt cover all three lanes at once. Chris myers welcoming you back live. And moments ago there is kurt busch at age 38. In las vegas the odds were 25 to 1 that he would win the daytona 500. The first of his career. The first win for stewarthaas in the daytona 500. Turf flying up on that ford and the celebration emotional comments from daytonas tony gibson. Hes down at victory lane the party is on in victory lane at daytona. For kurt busch and stewarthaas racing. His wife ashleigh, they were just married in january, with a congratulatory hug and kiss and this has been an unbelievable transition for stewarthaas racing as tony gibson, the crew chief, you saw his tearful comments just moments after the transition. It has been such a challenge and your reward, your team and your manufacturer a victory at daytona. How did you do it today, kurt . So much adversity. Accidents. Everything else. How did you get to the front . T unpredictable about daytona, the more it becomes predictable. Predict unpredictability. The car is completely trashed. Not a straight panel. Who knew what. What segments were what . Everybody is wrecking as soon as we were done with the second segment. I dont know. The more that ive run this race the more that ive just thrown caution to the wind and let it rip and elbows out. Thats what we did. That group put on a fantastic run to the end and everybody did a great job. I cannot believe this homecoming for ford. Thank you, everybody at ford, doug yates, Ford Performance. You led only one lap, the last lap. At what point in the last lap did you feel like you had a shot at winning it . My Rearview Mirror fell off with 30 to go. Im like, thats an omen. I have to drive defensively and take advantage of other peoples mistakes. I made a move in one and two and to get a run from behind is go behind. I got the run from whoever was behind. The spotter said, four back, five back. Five back. Five back. And im like, i cant even see out the back to enjoy it. I was so nervous coming to the line i didnt think we were going to win. Unbelievable to have all of this team work, to build that and here we are in victory lane. Monster energy, thank you for sponsoring the series and all of the families with monster enmerge gi, haas automated ford. Thank you team water heaters, mobile one. And most importantly a sold out group of fans and the fans watching on tv. Kurt, youre a former champion but youve been through a lot of adversity in your career. What does it mean to be standing here tonight in victory lane as the daytona 500 winner . I have a lot of people that have believed in me over the years, a lot of people that have supported me. I dont know if my wife is but i met this young woman and shes made more of a man out of me than all of my crew and my sponsors and my team. I want to say thank you, baby. Of course. Congratulations. I love you. This is what its all about. From a backup car all the way to finish second, ryan. You were so close. What was that last fraction of a lap like . Well, it took longer to get going. I tried to make a move with ten to go. It didnt go anhere. I thought we were kind of stuck. Luckily we had the 22 with us. I kind of helped him. He kind of helped me. The white flag there, we got a big run into one and they kind of all separated. We got a big pull off of that. We got in the second behind the 41. Somehow the run kept us going the whole way. I laid back to the 47. Im like, we run. I was sputtering and running out of gas the whole back straightaway. Im sure everyone else was, too. It was a solid day for us. We had such a fast car. A backup car and then worked so hard on it. It really means a lot. A lot for ford, motorcraft. Not what we wanted, pretty good run but a good start for the season. Ryan blaneys best finish at daytona. A. J. Allmendinger ties his greatest run. Were still trying to take in what happened in the last couple of laps. What did you see . Well, kind of like looking at the fuel pressure gauge, the window, the mirror and the last ten laps knowing that we were pretty close. I was trying to run in that pack and run quarter throttle and hold my spot the best i could. I knew everybody was close and it might come down to who didnt run out of fuel. Cant thank everybody enough on this 47 team, for the hard work. Thank you very much. We had something go wrong with the left front in the middle of the race. We had to pit like nine times to figure out what it was. My crew did a great job to diagnose and fix it. All in all, proud of the effort. Proud of kroger sponsoring the daytona event for ten years. More than anything else, have a good start to the 2017 season. I think cat and jody, all the hard work they put in, the efforts there. Our equipments there. Weve just got to put it together so hopefully its a great start. Great run. Well done. Kurt busch, he talked about leading just one lap. Thats a record for the fewest ever led by a daytona 500 winner. Ryan blaney, you heard from him. Ford taking three of the top four spots. Joey logano, previous 500 winner. Kyle larson, fuel became an issue. Chase elliott finishing 14 23 of the final 26 laps but lost the lead with three to go. Kevin harvick part of that stewarthaas ford team and led for a while. In ct, led the most laps in this race, 50. But if you saw in the top ten finishing eighth place, two time daytona 500 champion and in his final, his 30th daytona 500 our broadcast partner, Michael Waltrip survived. You were one of just a few cars out there, five, that had no damage throughout this wild, crazy kind of a wreck show. Yeah, i was in the middle of every wreck it seems like. We were able to sneak our way through. They fwlekd front of me and behind me. Wow, it was a fun day. You know whats so special, chris. I dont like it to be about me and its been a chance for people to say, man, we appreciate you. You did a good job for 30 years. Glad you get to go out on your own terms. Nice on the prerace show, the comments. What about the fuel mileage . My team laps short and i needed to do everything to save. We lost the draft. At the end of the race i had a pretty good handling car and we were passing people. It happened to be one of those deals where we were on the edge of fuel. People were saving and people were pushing hard. When that happens youre going to have a mixup. We certainly saw that. For all the crashes, pretty much 3 4 of a field. A terrific finish by that guy, Monster Energy not just sponsoring the series. Theyve been a sponsor of stewarthaas. More from daytona in a minute. 0 off deal goes to pizza hut for one week only, get 50 off menupriced pizzas when you order online. Thats half off a stellar cast of supreme, meatlovers, pepperoni and more. 50 off pizzas. Because no one out pizzas the hut. Kurt busch, hes the king of the 2017 daytona 500 after three runner up finishes of the Great American race. You saw the other guys on the throne pretty much knocked off the thrown in what was a rocky race. Back with Michael Waltrip, chris myers live from the hollywood hotel. When kurt busch finished second in 2003, that was your second daytona 500. It was. Then a cpl finished second to him in loudon. He said it sure is much worse finishing second at daytona than loudon. Such a great partner of Monster Energy. They came in and sponsoring the series. Theyre sponsoring kurt. Theyre celebrating that monstrous victory. People are wondering about your hair. You had a helmet on for 500 miles. Joey logano looked to be the guy at the end. You tried to duck out and nobody wanted to come with you. What was it like from your perspective, just the last lap . Needed more friends. You know, a tough race. A crazy race for everyone. Right after the last stage that restart got crazy, we were bumping and banging. It got really brutal out there. We were able to find ourselves in the lead. Thought we were in a good spot. The 24 had a good run. I tried to defend it. I defended the bottom, he snuck it right to the top. There. At that point they lined up the out. They single filed against the wall. Everyone was content with that. I dont understand why. The shellpennzoil ford wanted to get ripping out there and try to get our way back up there. Pretty much blaney, me and Austin Dillon that were thinking about doing it but we couldnt get enough to drop down. We needed z one or two more cars. Blaney got a good push at the end. Glad i could help him get to a second place finish and a couple fords won. Thats cool at daytona. Wish it was this car. All right. Joey have a coke and a smile. Some disappointment. We did attempt to talk to Chase Elliott and martin truex jr. But they were quick getting out of here, disappointment with them. 16th try kurt busch at the daytona 500 finally captures at the Great American race. Lead changes with three laps to go, two laps to go and the lap with kurt. They were excited with all the wrecks in the booth. Listening to joey logano and listening to martin truexs comments in the last couple of laps. Why is everybody still running single file . Why are we running around the top . I want to throw in one other factor. When you run high, it makes the track longer. Fuel mileage if youre coming close to fuel mileage, you have a better chance of running out of fuel. We had two of our up and coming super stars have the lead in the coming laps, Chase Elliott, kyle larson. Youth and enthusiasm ran at the front. Six fords, three chevys, one toyota. Your brothers in the top ten. I got a little emotional when the race was over. Seeing tony gibson, the old man winning at his home track. Seeing kurt in victory lane and mikey. You made me look good. I said youd come home in the top ten. You did it, brothe good job, mike. Eighth place run for him. How about Matt Dibenedetto getting a top ten run. Ninth place. Didnt expect that. Great to see. Larry . Yeah, you know. I know kurt busch got his first daytona 500 win but tony gibson gets his first. What an emotional interview. I was very impressed that tony and kurt were communicating early about the fuel situation. Remember with about eight or nine laps to go tony said, go ahead and flip your switch. So pretty good move by tony gibson, chris. Thanks very much, larry. It was interesting, ryan blaney at age 23 winds up second to 38yearold kurt busch. Michael, your last daytona 500. Youre 53. We had 21yearold Chase Elliott. 24yearold kyle larson with a chance to win. I think thats their frustration. Young guys with great talent until they start piling up the wins and veterans like kurt busch they know how to do it even with a different format in this race. Th daytona 500. Your career is defined with a victory in this great race and i know that. These guys were racing hard to win the daytona 500. Now theyre going to go to atlanta. What are these stages all about . We have to figure that out. Today its about celebrating with the harley j. Earle trophy. Kurt busch, his brother won the first stage. Never won, 0 for 12 is kyle in the daytona 500. Lets go to kyle larson. Matt yocum is standing by him. It was a day where you saw anything and everything happening here and kyle larson, it looked like you were in the perfect position. Johnson knew you were close. Crazy finish. Yeah, i would have i didnt think id have a shot to win the daytona 500 just yet. I dont feel like im experienced enough on this kind of stuff. I felt like i learned a lot today. Put ourselves in a great spot to win it. I knew wed be c we got single file, i rode the last 17 laps or so, 3 4 or half throttle trying to save as much as i could. Watching races in the past when they get single file, seems like they wait until the last lap to make moves. I didnt want to wait that long. I got going. Got to the lead there. You know, thought i was hoping i had saved enough fuel. I was worried when chase ran out there. I knew i would be close. We pitted at the same time, same engines. Just came up short. Oh, well. We had a good, you know, points day being in the points in the stages and then i think we still finished 12th. Disappointed but really honestly didnt ever think i would have a shot to win this race. Not for another handful of years. Harley j. Earle trophy for kurt bus now he wins for stewarthaas at daytona. Like . Im wirey. Uh, i love stuff. The kickoff to the season a big one for that man, kurt busch. Kind of flying under the radar last couple of years. Celebrating with a wedding in january and now a daytona 500 victory. And back, michael. There was a lot of i know people wanted to blame stages on some of the aggressive racing, but you say you were out there in it. What . Its just a slick track. The sun is shining. But mainly, chris, its how hard these guys race each other. I had a pretty good idea there were going to be wrecks. Its so difficult to pass. You have to side draft up to a guy and if you dont do that perfectly or he moves over. People say why do you golf all the time . Play golf i said, my car feels like that truck that jed clampett drove to hollywood. Beverly hi he gave me a laundry list it so i could drive the heck out of it.
