Lets get back to the couch right now fort big story the surprise firing of fbi director james comey. So much of the talk has been over its unprecedented nature and how it all happened. But should americaing shocked and what goes on behind the scenes at the department of justice and fbi and the relationship witness white house . This morning were getting some insight from james, former federal prosecutor who did spend part of his time as the Justice Department as the lay yea son to the fbi former special counsel to fbi director robert muller. Thanks for coming in this morning. Thanks for having me. We talked about the surprise. The others yesterday. As some o absolutely. I was Little League baseball game and people were checking their i phones and it went ar Justice Department or not. People were very surprised. Your thought was what. Extremely surprised. Not totally unprecedented. William sessions was of course removed back in 1993, but it is very unusual to say the least. So sessions removed for some pretty serious corruption ch charges. Is the same true though in this case . Sure those were ethics violations. Alleged ethics violations. Sure. They were investigated and there was seemed to be more of a process then. This seemed to come at least to most of us from out of the blue, and it wasnt really clear what process there was or what reasoning there was. Of course, mr. Rosenstein and mr. Sessions released a memo an letter talking about it but i think this for most of us came from out of the blue. On the face of it, you have the top official investigating then candidates trumps inner circle for collusion with russia and then suddenly the firing. On the face of it, the perception could be very bad. The perception could be bad. Well never know for sure whether this was political or purely political. But i think its undeniable a the perception is theres politic at play. Again whether thats true or not well never know that certainly a perception problem for the current administration. You serve the as special counsel to the fbi director at the time. How much influence is there in a position like this . I would think this would be a position where you would try to separate yourself from any type of political influence whether it be from the administration, from congress or either. I think thats the idea. For example, theres a ten year term for the fbi director which is supposed to insulate him or from the political process a little. This is washington, though, and of course you cant fully separate yourself from politic so there was constant testimony on the hill, there were political controversies and things like that. I think director muller when i was there did a very conscious evident to try to separate himself from some of the politics but it is there. This, though, seems to be right in the middle of politics. From what i can see scandal with Hillary Clinton for perhaps the final straw here watch have you learned . Is that the entire reason and if your opinion is that enough to fire the fbi director . So theres no limits in the law on firing an fbi director. He serves he or she serves at the pleasure of the president so i guess this could be enough. Weve not seen this before. I think one very interesting thing is that the Deputy Attorney general is the one who wrote a rather lengthy memo three pages discussing it and i think that he expressed some views that lot of current and former federal prosecutors felt that ordinarily you dont talk about ongoing investigations or even declined investigations publicly and a lot of us me included felt that what mr. Comey did was unprecedented. He had his reasons for it. Hes explained that. But i do think that there was a negative reaction to a lot of current and former prosecutors to that. To that end i want to follow up quickly, because at this legacy, he was a bit of a rock star as far as in this position after 9 11. Sure. Correct . Sure. Can you speak a little bit on that. I think the headline becomes today, comey fired and you think about the emails unthink about russia, but james comey comes with very lengthy resume. He does. He had a very distinguished pedigree i think that he was seen as somebody who was very personable and relatable. Director muller was a fantastic director but a little more aloof. That was his style. And mr. Comey was seen as more of fbi director of the people, that was kind of his reputation in the department of justice as well. And he had a very impeccable credentials going into the job. For those on the other side who say maybe he did over step his bounds little bit in in cases and perhaps that could be reason for the firing and cause, the timing though is that something that can get past especially now you have to go through congress whether it be with a special prosecutor now to look into this investigation or special investigator quite simply to go ahead and put somebody else into his position because that would have to go through congress as well. Right the timing is very difficult i think we talked about the perception of politic its kind of hard to explain why now. Part of it could be because the Deputy Attorney general who i mentioned was just recently confirmed and maybe they were waiting for him to weigh in because hes an experienced prosecutor and they valued his opinion but it does seem a little bit out of the blue to do it here in may when the activities happened so long ago. Do you think we dont know it seemed like director item comey was caught off guard based out of the reports coming out of los angeles finding out perhaps not in person as to not having this position any more. We dont know exactly what his direct communication was with the administration. If he testifies at some point might there be something that comes out thats a big bombshell at this point do we really think nothing huge is going to come out we dont already know. Well be watching for that obviously we dont know what will happen in it will depend how guarded he is going down the road for any senate hearings. Restriction from what he can say at this point. Hes still restricted by his ethical duties and by confidentiality and classified information. He still cant reveal those type of things but weve seen in washington that people have a way of getting messages out and it will be very interesting to see what he says later on. Speaking to this president has an interesting way of getting messages out. He does. Hes been very active on twitter today. One of things hes saying is thats correct you know, boohoo democrats now youre complaining when you wanted him out when it seemed to derail the Hillary Clinton campaign. Does the president have a point here . Do you think that was taken into consideration by his advisers to let james comey go . I do think. It as i mentioned before i think there was a strong reaction for the former and federal prosecutors about the public nature that mr. Comey talked about the email scandal and the investigation. I dont know that anybody actually wanted him fired for that. Im jus for such an brunt action. Sure. At this time. I think we all are. Okay. I dont think there is one. Thats the timing issue is really what creates that perception that maybe there was politics. Its hard to explain the timing now. Sure. Before we let you go, whats next then . Obviously we need a new director somebody that could have be confirmed through the senate. Doesnt to be somebody whose presently in the fbi correct . Right. What type of person might be a good fit, what would that look for somebody who not only could hold that position but get confirmed through congress . I would think they would want to find somebody who has a long Law Enforcement background be as a prosecutor or as an fbi agent or somebody involved in Law Enforcement, and who is even as bipartisan and true prosecutor. Mr. Rosenstein has that reputation as Deputy Attorney general. Maybe they can find somebody like that to take the fbi director position. Another thing that might happen theres certainly be calls for that there may be a special prosecutor an independent prosecutor appointed for the russia inves well look for that for the next step to come. And then for metro right now back oh normal except for green line delays because of safetrack yellow rush plus impacted as well a lot of metro bus delays in the district because of congestion. Questions area rin fox5 d. C. On twitter. Allison and steve. Baltimore start up wants the city to pilot new approach to bail replacing cash with guns. It is called gun bail and wisdom joins to us explain what it is and how it works. I want to hear what you guys think about this as a concept an lot of people will be talking about especially in the Baltimore Area if this real deal thing. Now the company gun bail come up innovative way they say will get illegal guns off the streets and use those guns for bail. Heres how the process works. Now, basically if you have one of these illegal guns, take a picture of the firearm with gun bail app, specifically the inmate and his location and pay the gun bail the shipping fee and the ham link fee. All right. They send i was box. Tell where you to drop off this weapon. Youre granted amnesty during the process meaning you cant be investigated for previous crime that happened with this gun. All right. Pack the firearm with a trigger lock. Pack it safely drop it in facility. Its recorded in the system as surrendered they zen the weapons to local Law Enforcement. Law enforcement they get it win three days. At least three days and once they get it the person whos in jail can post gale as early as 48 hours depending on the Law Enforcement agency. Now, gun bail says they guide you through the entire process of getting the gun off the streets and then getting that person out of jail t the creator of gunbail is trevor brooks who came up with his idea while he was in prison serving time for gun offense. He says that this is a serious problem and something needs to be done to get these illegal guns off the streets. Hes got some support because councilman Brandon Scott introducing the resolution for the council to consider gun bail. People can turn the guns in and term simply turn around get another gun it doesnt really should have anything. Granting amnesty is just not a good idea. Now the police have actually talked with brooks about this idea but the problem is, this would be a really complicated process. If this did get before the council and they voted on it it would be a really complicated process because you have to go through the local laws and its a whole big thing but thats where thats the simple idea at this point. Basically you would turn the guns in, go through the process to get somebody bail instead of paying the cash. It seem like going through the third party creates a lot of things that could go wrong. Thats where instead of just taking the gun to the police station. Right. And dealing with authorities. The problem is, thats where it gets complicated because its a whole complicated and tha about gun laws. I understand that. You better illegal guns. There has to be the trust there which actually be amnesty. Exactly. Somebody the trust somebody didnt steal a gun to get somebody out of jail. Exactly much thats why the opponents are saying were not really sure this is a good idea. But the supporter mr. Brooks says somebody has got to do something. This is an innovative theory. Council introducing it. They can argue amongst themselves and vote on it. A fascinating concept practicality of it is whole the other issue. Look if there are illegal guns great way getting them off the streets is a great thing. Whether this is the way to do it right. If people take the opportunity to be sincere with it and not get another gun, you know, the same way you got the first gun. Exactly. They gave away 300 tickets on their through their fan club and radio winners as well, and around 9 00 oclock they let people in stadium, and this is at m and T Bank Stadium the cool thing is, that theyre actually kicking off the tour.
