Reporter theres a strong belief that james comey was fired as director because he wouldnt shut down the investigation into whether the Trump Campaign had anything to do with russias hacking attacks on the president ial election. President trump has frequently derided the investigation saying in a tweet on monday, quote, when will this taxpayer funded charade end. Congressional sources say far from ending it, comey told them that he asked the Justice Department to provide more resources for the investigation in a meeting last week with the Deputy Attorney general who wrote the memo supporting the firing. A justice official says that meeting never happened and no request was some Officials Say rosenstain threatened to resign if it wasnt made clear that he was asked to write the memo. For now james comey isnt saying anything further, but it wouldnt be surprising if he soon provides his own version of what led to the firing. All right. Pete williams, thank you. Is it still the position of the white house and the president that james comeys firing had absolutely nothing to do with russia and his investigation into possible collusion . Absolutely. Look, its real simple. Any investigation that was taking place on monday is still taking place today. That doesnt change because director comey isnt there. So this absolutely has nothing to do with any investigation into russia. Do you understand why some people are frankly suspicious . I mean, the president tweeted on t funded charade and a hoax c and he fires the fbi director the same way. It also is reported that it happened just as Congress Says comey was asking for more resources for the russia investigation. Subpoenas were being issued. Do you understand why people are thinking theres smoke here, there must be fire . Again, anything that was taking place hasnt changed. Look, i think that director comey had become a greater liability. If anything, i think the American People should have more confidence that they dont have somebody caught in that cross fire as part of this conversation. You have an independent individual lick the Deputy Attorney general who had been appointed obama and President Trump. This is someone who sets the Gold Standard in the legal system. I think hes a perfect person youd be looking for in terms of an independent person to be the helm of the investigation. The Washington Post has a story that says that the quit. Hes one of the questions who wrote the threepage memo outlining the shortcomings of james comey. He threatened to quit because he thought too much of the credit or blame for the firing of james comey was being laid at his feet. Did that happen . Did he threaten to quit . Im not aware of that conversation. But i know the decision to fire director comey was the president s and the president s alone. Obviously he took their recommendation very seriously. But the president had been thinking about this since november, since he was elected president. This was something he had considered. He had never been solidly on board with keeping comey for the long term, and the erosion of confidence had been taking place over a long period of time. Last wednesdays testimony was another example and catalyst that pushed the president to the point he asked for their feedback. They give that to him orally. And he asked them recommendation which was a very strong recommendation and very clear reasons why they also felt that the director should no longer be in that position. When the president wrote that short termination letter to director comey, i want to ask you about one paragraph where he said he appreciated comey telling him on three occasions that he wasnt under investigation. The wall street journal reporting associates of comey say that never happened. They call it literally farcical, and said it would violate longstanding policies on criminal investigations. Why did the president feel that it was necessary to include that paragraph in that letter . Look, im not sure on the reasoning behind that exact part in there, but i do know i spoke to the president directly, and he said that the moments and conversations did take place. Do you have any proof of those conversations . I mean, again, i spoke directly to the president. I think thats a pretty good source to go no, does the president have any proof of those conversations . Thats a question well have to ask him. Real quickly, sara, answer a question for me. If the president really believes that his campaign has nothing to hide, he certainly believes in his own innocence, why not just come right out and say let that investigation go forward . Three resources at it. Nobody wants to get to the bottom of this more than i do. Instead, he continues to call it a hoax and a charade. Why not just clear the air . I think we have. Weve cooperated in every place we could. Youve got the House Committee looking into it where they say they found nothing. A Senate Committee started looking into it and said theyve found nothing. The fbi is looking into it. They said they found nothing. Weve cooperated but its been going on for nearly a year and throughout this entire time everybody has come back with there is no evidence of collusion. At some point we have to get to a place wheree and looked through it, and nothing is there, and its time to move on. Do you think look, we want this thing to go to full completion. We are completely supportive of that. I dont think theres anybody that wants that more than this administration. The crash is being investigated as people are offering condolences to a man who looms very large in the world of sports. This Morning Police in connecticut are investigating what caused this horrifying. Reporter car crash that killed kathy berman, the wife of chris berman. The 67yearold had been driving near the couples home tuesday afternoon when she struck a vehicle in front of her. Her car then veered off the road overturning at the bottom of this embankment. The other car driven by an 87yearold slammed into a utility pole and landed up side down. The mans daughter saying he was on his way home from the cet wifes grave. Both he and berman were killed. A former teacher, kathy berman worked to expand literacy in the state. So engaging. So friendly. A beautiful smile. You could feel her spirit and her passion for literacy just talking to her for two minutes. Reporter for nearly 40 years her husband chris was a staple at espn. Nicknamed boomer, he was a steady presence during nfl broadcasts before stepping down in january. Now after his wifes fatal accident, athletes and broadcasters are offering their con the lenses. When did we get too busy to get to know People Living right next door . Christen shell is raising four children in austin, texas, but found little communing in her community. I was noticing that we would wave and give a friendly hi, but then the garage doors would go up and down, and would disappear inside. She did something drastic. She painted a picnic table turk oiz and put it in her front yard. What if we moved things we we a to move them in the front yard and just live in a more visible way. Reporter people were curious. Pretty soon the neighbors asked to put tables in their own front yards. You can see them on the lawns across her neighborhood. From there, it became a movement of front yard people which she documents. Christen said there are thousands of turquoise tables. In the recent polls only about 4 in 10 americans know most or all of their neighbors. We wanted to see if we could start a conversation by setting up a table at a busy outdoor market. I think the past five houses i lived at i havent known my neighbors. You know about half your neighbors my name . Yes. And the other half . Well, i wave to but i dont know them. There seems to be a disconnect. Many blame our connection to our devices and social media. Were through computers and phones oz opposed to hanging out on the front porch and letting the kids run around outside. Step past social media is like were having a conversation right now face to face. How do we start a Movement Getting people to bring back that sense of community once again. Is it possible . I think its possible. I think its probable. It seems like theres so much polarity from different groups and different views in the u. S. Right now, and to me, all that means is eventually its going to come back together. Reporter some see technology as a tool to keep the peace. We have each others numbers. We send messages saying the party is getting too loud and my kids are trying to go to sleep. Reporter but it can also lead to confusion. We misinterpret whats being written because theres no body language. Theres no inflection. You could kid with me on an email, and i could get a sense to it, but if you kid with me face to face, i can read your b okay. Reporter we ask if we could help. How do you approach your neighbor and say, by the way, can you leave things on your fence so our fence doesnt fall down. Something i notice a lot in my conversations is they very often dont approach a neighbor about an issue such as this. They keep it inside, and they tell their friends, but they never approach the neighbor. Youre nodding. Im guessing this is the case here. When her sister wrote in to tell us about her, we wanted to give cindy a special surprise. Cindy neff is a warrior mom. My mom is totally amazing. Shes our number one supporter with anything we do. My sister is selfless. She doesnt know the phrases i cant or im too busy. And busy she is. From leading her girl scout troop to volunteering in her community, cindy may be a stay home. Im told it is amazing that i have dedicated my life to do so much for other people. I feel as if its what i was meant to do. The best job is being a mom to her two daughters, 18yearold erin and 13yearold casey which has been even more important over the past eight months after their dad, kent, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack last september. Ken was amazing. I was very fortunate to have married such a great guy. He was a great dad. A great provider. Theres no words to even describe him other than the man. One of my favorite moments of my dad would probably be around christmas having wrapping paper wars. Every time hed hit somebody, hed laugh. Its been the memories that ken has held close in the hearts of his loved ones. We try to keep him in every conversation we can knowing that their dad is there watching out for for a softball game, he was the one that told me to go above and beyond with things, and knowing that he isnt there for this yeah. One of my struggles has been him not being there to see him graduate. Thats definitely one of the hardest things. Its going to happen. The neff family is no stranger to hardships. Casey battled cancer when she was 11 months old. Ill never forget the first night we spent in the hospital. It was not real. She went through chemo, radiati radiation, there was a lot of moms i met who lost their children in that hospital. But casey survived. Now cindy and her daughters are survivors once again. If i would just stay in bed, cover my head like i have felt many mornings to do this, thats probably what my girls would do too, because they loved him as much as i i had to put both my feet on the ground and get out of bed. Because of the facilitity shes faced, taking care of her home has become less of a priority. With mothers day a few days away, the it was the first way to honor cindy. We have a surprise.
