hannah. >> reporter: the search taking place on plots in and around charlottesville. and the police chief in the press conference today made an unusual request. he made a plea to realtors, asking them on u.s. soil. in fact, this morning iraq's new prime minister said several isis members had been captured in his country and they disclosed a plot against the metro in paris and a transit system in the u.s. but both the fbi and the cia say they have no evidence of the plot. in fact, an iraqi official later told nbc news the threat is only to paris' subway system. but intelligence agencies say they are double checking to see if they missed anything. but right now as of now, there is no credible threat to the united states. here in our area, metro says it is aware of the reported threat and it says the transit agency is always vigilant when it comes to keeping writers safe. transportation reporter adam tuss joins us live now from the gallery place station in northwest. adam. >> reporter: hey, pat. just the mere mention of a possible terror plot against u.s. subway system certainly got metro's attention and riders' attention today. but metro stressing to us, there is no specific threat. a highly visible police presence is something that's become routine on metro. and metro says that's by design. >> right. and it's a reflection of the fact that we are constantly monitoring world events and monitoring for throats. >> reporter: the chief spokesperson saying today's talk about an attack on subway systems hasn't changed metro's security level. >> we continue to operate at a high level of security that we do on any day. we are very mindful of the fact we are operating a public transit system in the nation's capital. so we're at a high level every day. today is no there. >> reporter: metro says it's one of the most wired transit systems in the world with cameras everywhere. dozens of k-9 explosive detection teams also out on a daily basis. >> reporter: back here live outside the gallery place station. metro says it has a lot more going on behind the scenes to keep us safe that we don't necessarily see. hear more about that coming up next hour at 6:00. reporting live at gallery place, adam tuss, news4. it is damp and dreary out there. when is the dreary stuff going to finally clear out? >> that's what everybody wants to know. doug, you've got some good news for us? >> yeah, great news. it's going to clear out tomorrow, but for the rest of this evening, we're still looking at some dreary conditions right on through the rest of the night. so take a look outside right now. storm team 4 radar picking up on more drizzle that continues to develop in through fairfax county, loudoun county, montgomery county, howard county. if we zoom in, even seeing it right outside our studios here in northwest d.c. starting to see it moving back out towards the east, towards d.c. and nats park and possibly towards prince george's county where the redskins are taking on the giants tonight. so we're hoping that forecast remains dry. as the redskins do that, kickoff tonight at 8:25. right now we're thinking it's going to be fairly dry. but there could be some areas of drizzle. temperatures around 65 degrees. it will be rather breezy and it will be chilly. if you're going to the game, you're going to need your jacket. we'll talk about the next couple days and that weekend, because things, they're turning around big-time. i'll show you when. >> alrighty. thanks, doug. well, let's head out to fedexfield now. jim handly and diana russini on the field for the big game tonight. >> yeah, guys. both teams didn't get much rest, just playing on sunday and now here they are back out on the field on thursday. >> yeah. >> short week for both of them, you're right. excitement is building, guys, and the weather is dipping too. you pulgd o pulled out the leather jacket. tell doug, not going to need these tonight. wishful thinking. we have been out here since 4:00, we're starting to see the coaches, the cheerleaders warmed up, too. tailgaters, from chopper 4, this could be a contest of the quarterbacks, eli manning and company here. the giants kick off 8:25. but all eyes tonight on our quarterback, kirk cousins, and so far, dianna, has not disappointed. >> yes, the team getting ready for the short week, just a few days to prepare for the giants. most of that happens during the off season. coaches prep for them. but for kirk cousins, the starting quarterback of the redskins team, only his sixth start. and for him, all about time management. and it reminds him a lot of his time when he played at michigan state. >> it's all about time management, going back to when i was a college student, they would tell you about being a good manager of your time. you still feel that way in the pros, manage your time well, and every second managing film or drawing plays or talking with coaches, not wasting time but making good use of it. >> we're going through the same process, but have got to do it faster. got to watch film faster, and go through the plays faster, write down the plays faster. yeah, it's -- it's tough. little jittery right now. had 17 cups of coffee. >> i -- >> 17 cups of coffee? >> i kept talking about the team, you know, what they're doing to prep. i'm like what about you? because the guy looks exhausted. he told me after that press conference he only sleeps about two hours a night on a week like this. he was adjusting. this is his first time being a head coach in the nfl and definitely wearing on him. but this is what you've got to do if you want to come out and be prepared. >> hyper natures in spring. >> exactly. >> sleep it off then. >> coming up, we're going to get up close and personal with coach gruden about life at home. what it's like for mrs. gruden to be around a coach after a win other a loss. so he opens it up. we have that in a few minutes. >> great one-on-one. and jason pugh taking my seat as i head upstairs to watch. enjoy your night at work. >> bring me some coffee, please. >> i will. not 17 cups. back to you guys in the studio. >> thanks dianna and jim. eric holder resigns. minutes ago, the president announced the attorney general is stepping down. we'll go live to the white house. and it's being called the school fight club. what's being done to stop the eruption of violence on a local campus. also, police shot and killed a troubled teen. now his family has just learned the officer that pulled the trigger is not going to be held accountable. we'll explain why. in fairfax county we had to cut a lot of waste. we consolidated offices. started sharing printers. we can walk a few feet. replaced computers, but kept the monitors. they still work fine. we even discovered that the phone company overcharged us by three million dollars! i approve this message because congress doesn't need another right winger. they need someone who can balance a budget. oh, and we definitely didn't need so many government studies. i want to thank you, mr. president, for the opportunity that you gave me to serve and for giving me the greatest honor of my professional life. we have been great colleagues. but the bonds between us are much deeper than that. in good times and in bad, in things personal and things professional, you have been there for me. i'm proud to call you my friend. >> an emotional eric holder thanked president obama as he announced plans today to step down. that was about an hour ago. the president praised holder for his commitment to equal justice, also saying holder will remain until his successor is confirmed. holder has deep roots in washington, having serve the as a judge of a judge of a d.c. superior court and attorney. joining us with more is nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker. >> reporter: good evening. it was an emotional announcement earlier today. really essentialed the relationship between the attorney general and president obama. they have a close personal relationship, but also a close working relationship. the attorney general is one of president obama's top advisers. we are told that the attorney general informed president obama that he was leaving around labor day. not a big surprise, because the attorney general had been signalling he's ready to leave. he's, of course, approaching six years. if he stays through december, he will be the second-longest serving attorney general in history. president obama has not determined who his replacement will be yet. we are told. he's in the process of going through a list of potential people. and some of the names being floated around include cathy rumler. she was, of course, the white house counsel. also don virtue i willy, solicitor general, argued for the health care law in the supreme court. he was criticized at the time for not doing a good job of arguing that case. but, of course, the health care law was upheld. right now he's touted as a front runner. also deval patrick on the list of replacement. the white house won't give an indication who they are thinking. but you imagine president obama is feeling some pressure to get someone in place, particularly with the mid terms coming up and the threat that democrats could lose the senate to republicans. of course, attorney general holder has had a contentious relationship to some extent with congress over fast and furious. also over his -- he announced he wanted to try the 9/11 suspects in new york. he reversed course on that, but lot a got of pushback in congress. so he's sort of going out on a high note, though. because he just led this investigation into what happened in ferguson, and that really rallied a lot of people, a lot of bipartisan support around him. so certainly a very big announcement here out of the white house today. the attorney general himself signaling he's going to stay on the job until the president chooses his replacement. and today he suggested that could take a few months. pat, back to you. >> all right, kristen welker at the white house. thank you, kristen. we want to turn now to the senate race in virginia. in a new poll, they chose mark warner's lead may be narrowing. warner is a democrat. and quinnipiac university shows he still leads ed gillespie 48-39%. libtarian candidate at 6%. that nine-point difference in this poll is the closest warner and gillespie have been this election cycle. in fact, other recent surveys have shown warner with double digit leads. to the weather, doug is here. and doug, are things only going to get better from here on out? >> they can't get much worse. >> exactly right. what a day we have had out there, accidents on the roads because of all of the rain. and we didn't see a ton of rain. we saw about a half inch in some locations, some places a little more. and we continue to see drizzle at this hour. we will continue to see that, i think, through the rest of the evening. but then skies are going to open up and i don't mean with rain. i mean with plenty of sunshine. and that's coming the next couple days. right now we are dealing with that drizzle and areas of plenty of cloud cover. credible currently sitting at 69 degrees, on the cool side for sure. winds out of the north at 14 miles per hour, gusting upwards of 15 to 20 miles per hour during the afternoon. and they'll continue to do that through the evening. 70 back towards martinsburg, 70 in frederick. a little in the way of clearing here, but to the east, 65 in annapolis and the patuxent river with the northeasterly flow. light shower activity, mostly just drizzle, and it's going to be -- if you add that little umbrella, you're a-okay. without it, though, it's just more of a nuisance. a little hazard. down towards fairfax, herndon, tyson's corner area, seeing more of that drizzle. we did see more towards southern maryland, but all of that is now gone. once again, we'll continue to see some drizzle, areas of drizzle through the rest of the night as our storm system is moves out. once again, even though the storm system is moving north and east, we have the northeasterly flow. that's why we have areas of drizzle and that's why we'll see more tonight for the nationals game as they take on the mets. looking okay. 64 with areas of drizzle. most of the game will be dry. but it will it be cool. 63 in the seventh inning. 62 degrees a little bit on the cool side tonight for that last out. future weather, taking a look through thursday to 11:00 tonight. looking pretty good. i think we'll start to clear out here and by early tomorrow, we're just going to be dealing with some areas of fog. so i'm not expecting anymore rain during the day tomorrow. and tomorrow afternoon looks spectacular with plenty of sunshine by noon. i think that sunshine remains through the afternoon too. and i do think we are looking at a great, great weekend. tomorrow, fantastic friday. 78 degrees for a high temperature on friday. about 10 degrees warmer than today. 78 in leesburg. 80 towards culpeper and 79 in fredericksburg. so what to wear tomorrow? well, it's going to start off on the cool side. but then during the afternoon, gets better. so maybe the shorts for recess. but the jacket, maybe the sweatshirt as the kids head out to school early. we'll be a-okay by the 11:00 or 12:00 hour. saturday and sunday, 81 on saturday, 83 on sunday. 79 on monday. and the next seven days, our average high right now, 74, 75 degrees. we're going above average for the next seven. looking really nice.
