memorial will remember those who lost their lives. >> i saw my life flash before my eyes, because you think, how could this happen. stephanie: a former miss new hampshire overcame a battle with breast cancer. how she' s using her experience to help others. hayley: cool temperatures today, but beautiful for foliage viewing, and now warmer temperatures are on the way for the second half of the weekend. stephanie: fall is in the air at the milford pumpkin festival this weekend. we' ll show you some of these massive pumpkins. like we do. now wmur news 9 at 6:00. stephanie: a beautiful start to the columbus day weekend. many of you heading north to see peak foliage. i' m stephanie woods. meteorologist hayley lapoint tells us about a cooldown on the hayley: it was a cool day even s. the fall chill in the air. these are the temperatures today, only 50 whitefield, 54 degrees plymouth and laconia. lots of sunshine, bright and sunny. now that darkness has fallen, temperatures will plummet s up north, 44 concord. we have some clouds that will move in. that will be the saving grace, keeping temperatures a little warmer during the overnight, had we not had the clouds. the clouds would be around the early part of the day tomorrow, but then we are back to bright sunshine, and more sunshine with warmer temperatures for columbus day monday. i will break down the forecast coming up. stephanie: drivers heading north are causing some slowdowns on the roads. i-93 and kancamagus highway. state police say there' s no accidents, just fall foliage traffic. many people are also headed to sandwich and fryeburg for county fairs today. new hampshire state police say a japanese man led troopers on a chase in canterbury. 70-year-old chikara ishikawa of japan was allegedly speeding on i-93 just after 7:00 this morning. troopers say when they tried to pull over ishikawa, he refused to stop. another trooper set up a spike strip down the highway and stopped the car. ishikawa is charged with reckless driving, disobeying an officer, and resisting arrest. the pumpkin festival is this weekend in milford. fall is in the air in milford as the town holds their annual pumpkin festival. thousands gathered on and around the historic milford oval for the festivities today. there' s entertainment, food, vendors, carnival rides, a pumpkin catapult, and more. tonight, there will also be fireworks. organizers say volunteers make the three-day event possible. >> it' s anything from helping us put on the festival to maybe doing their own nonprofit booth, be it a scout troop or the lions club or the rotary. if you add all of those up, it' s probably 700 people. it' s a lot of people and they work for months on this. stephanie: the festival will be open until 9:30 tonight, and tomorrow 10:00 to 3:00. the sandwich fair is also going on this columbus day weekend. the fair runs until monday, with gates opening at 8:00 a.m. the parade starts tomorrow at 1:00 in downtown sandwich. you can check out livestock, marching bands, and rides at the fair. admission is $10 for adults and $4 for kids age 8 to 12. children under 7 are free. and it may look like fall in sandwich, but winter arrived at mount washington today. we could see the flakes flying this morning on our sky cameras atop mount washington. temperatures were in the mid-20' s with winds gusting over 80 miles per hour. the general manager of the mount washington auto road tells us that the snow arrived late this year, and now that it' s here, it' s a sight that can' t be missed. >> we have some brilliant colors right now, and now they are contrasted by the white top northern presidentials, so it is just beautiful blue sky overhead now that the clouds have cleared, with snow on the mountains and color in the foreground. it' s really something else. stephanie: if you are thinking about taking a ride on the mount washington auto road, staff says to arrive early to beat the crowds. you can drive it yourself or take a guided tour. a plaque was unveiled this afternoon in alstead, as the town commemorates 10 years since the flood. the stone was built into a rock on the edge of the cold river. wmur' s mike cronin was at today' s dedication. he joins us live with more. mike: it was a low-key but sessional ceremony -- special ceremony as they remember the day that change this town forever. dozens came to see the plaque revealed, built memory of the four lives lost and recognition of the property and homes destroyed and gratitude for those who helped with rescue and recovery on october 9, when floodwaters swept through the town. everything in the town was rebuilt and now the plaque has become part of history. they cost $1000 to build and was paid for by resident donations of $20 and five cents, representative of the year 2005. people say it is important to remember and come together on a day like this. >> this is all part of our psyche now that this happened and we dealt with it. it looks so nice around here now. >> very painful. but this is a special town. i' ve always thought so. all these people around me, i know at least half of them. mike: years from now residents say people may not understand the flood, but this plaque mike cronin, wmur news 9. stephanie: across the country, october is breast cancer awareness month. every two minutes, a woman in the u.s. is given the diagnosis which can be a terrifying life event. one former miss new hampshire, it' s become a way to help and inspire others. wmur' s kristen carosa has her story. kristen: mary morin carlin was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36 years old. she has just wrapped up her treatment. now her focus is shifting to help others going through the same thing and reminding them that no one fights this alone. mary morin carlin grew up in bedford. >> i graduated from unh and i served as miss new hampshire. kristen: since then, she moved to new york, she got married, and had a baby, not realizing her life was about to change. >> i was in shock. i thought here i am, i' m 36 years old and i have a 2-year-old daughter and a husband. her right breast in february and went to her doctor. after several tests, she was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer. >> a week and a half after being diagnosed, i had both breasts removed and then rested for three weeks, and then i started eight rounds of chemotherapy over the course of six months. kristen: through this process, mary has discovered she is high-risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. >> the next step is in november, i will have my ovaries, uterus, and cervix removed because i have another genetic variation for uterine cancer. kristen: during this time, she' s kept her family and her miss new hampshire friends close by her side. she is partnering with a former contestant and friend who' s also been fighting breast cancer to create "fighting fabulously." it' s an online support group for women. >> when you are in your 20' s and 30' s and you have breast cancer, you feel very alone. kristen: mary also wants to create gift bags to give out to breast cancer patients, to make them feel better after going through treatments. her hairdresser and owner of bonne vie salon and spa in derry is holding a fundraiser on sunday, october 18, to raise money to help make that happen. >> all of these nice things we hope we can provide them and put a smile on their face, and also help them financially with all of these extra things. kristen: mary says she wants to fill the bags with special things that she wished she had when she was going through treatments. when the bags are created, some will go the norris cotton cancer center in manchester, and the rest will go to the cancer center where she received treatment in
