thousands of passengers from the carnival triumph cruise ship are finally home, telling their stories of their misadventures at city. -- sea. randall pinkston has the latest from wjz from the port of mobile, alabama. to a shipyard friday. the u.s. coast guard and national transportation safety board. triumph may be moved to the bahamas for cleanup and repair because. >> it is almost like returning to the scene of the crime. >> reporter: after a hot shower, she returns home to texas. she said enduring the squalor conditions on the ship was life changing. >> made us appreciate things we have, electricity, flushing toilets, running water. >> reporter: after the ship finally docked last night, passengers were busied. many took charter flights home. >> some passengers are complaining that carnival's response to the emergency was slow and inadequate. but triumph's on-board crewmembers are getting high praise. >> they had to walk around with rubber gloves, gas masks and pick up these potty bags. >> they always had this smile on their face. they helped you, no matter what. >> reporter: one thing passengers disagreed on is whether to take up carnival's offer for a discounted cruise again. >> are you ready to do it again? >> yes. because surely lightning can't strike in the same place twice. >> they can have whatever they offer us, they can keep it. or i'll take it and frame it. >> reporter: because of the damage, carnival has canceled triumph's next 12 voyages. >> carnival admits the ship had mechanical problems, weeks before the engine fire. well, preparing for snow. local crews are getting plows and trucks ready, in case of an accumulating snow. sunny and clear right now. you wouldn't think snow is in the forecast. but it could be another story in just a few hours, believe it or not. wjz's first warn weather team. meteorologist bob turk. they're tracking live doppler radar. >> probably getting people scratching heads. the ground is on streets are on. it's probably only going to stick on the lawns and trees. here's radar. we have rain activity. just west of us. probably around 6:30 to 7:00. we'll see rain into the baltimore region. but temperatures are still very warm. 55 in easton. as you head west. hagerstown is rainy now. and 40 degrees. dropped some 15 degrees there. 30, light snow flurry activity in oakland now. ask that will continue and they may see -- see accumulations during the day saturday, low pressure passing to the southeast. may kick in a little extra moisture. may see? more showers in the afternoon. sort of like a second round. and on the lower eastern shore, even southern jersey, around ocean city and salisbury. could see a burst of snow late in the day on saturday. with more on that, tim williams has the look at the forecast. bob showed you the dynamics and how this storm is coming together. really, have to just say, it's nothing more than the storms coming through. really down the 95 corridor to the west of that. colder air starts to settle in and the storm starts to pull it in and mix in with that moisture. maybe a rain, snow mix before it all starts to move to the east. and there again, going to get a pretty significant snowstorm. bob will have your complete updated first warning forecast. a cooler weekend coming up in just a few moments. now, back inside. a grand jury indicts a man for charges of running a prosecution -- prostitution ring. police say they ran their operation out of a southwest baltimore warehouse. they would bring in women, according to police, from as far away as texas. both men face a host of charges. we have breaking news. former representative jesse jackson, jr., is charged with misusing three-quarters of a million dollars. they say he used it for a rolex watch, fur coat and refurning his home. in a statement, the former congressman said he -- fully accepts responsibility for the decisions and mistakes he has made. wjz investigation continues to reveal the tragic shooting of the police trainee. and tonight, there are concerns over whether it was fully staffed. wjz is live at city hall. investigator mike hellgren has more on the story. >> reporter: sources say there were just not enough people monitoring the train, denise. that injured officer is still in critical condition tonight while the state police investigation is under way. >> the police training session. wjz has also learned the training officer, william scott kern, who baltimore police confirmed. the trainee kept raising his head when he should have remained hidden. he thought he was using a fake weapon, with simulator bullets. instead, it was his real service weapon with live ammo. >> we talked about the facts. his work ethics is impeccable. as a street cop, it's difficult. >> sources tell wjz there were only two training officers present when there should have been 4. >> there there have been more instructors at that site. where the exercise was being carried o. >> city councilmembers are outraged, stressing the importance of finding out what happened. >> how could that happen? why would there be a live weapon, live ammunition? what are the procedures? were they being followed? if they were being followed, something is absolutely incorrect. it's wrong. >> just a little anger. and how does this happen? >> reporter: good evening, kai. baltimore police say they have pretty solid leads, but still no arrests. >> these pictures from a baltimore city police camera on the corner of howard and fayette. >> it was unnecessary. for the fight to break out. and he got stabbed. it was so unnecessary. >> the person in purple is a primary suspect in his murder. >> what we know this for is it was an isolated incident. the victims knew their attackers. we believe this stemmed from a dispute. >> they went to say goodbye. families and dozens of his fellow students from patterson high school, are still asking themselves why. >> nobody deserves to die. and definitely, he didn't deserve it. >> the things going on without young children today. >> reporter: on february 5th, as baltimore celebrated the ravens win. missay deontae and several other people got into a fight. and he was stabbed several times. he had a heart attack on the way to the hospital and died t. the city watch network camera is the most important source they have now to track down the killer. >> homicide is investigating that and we have leads. >> reporter: even that didn't stop the brutal attack. >> it was really awful to hear that, after coming in from this great celebration. >> reporter: many are hoping those who recognized the person in person, believed to be responsible, will not stand by and let him get away with murder. >> reporter: and two other people were also stabbed during this attack. they survived. i'm rochelle lichee -- rochelle ritchie. now back to you. if anyone has information about the murder of deon tay smith, you are asked to call police. you can remain anonymous. there is incredible video out of russia, where a meteor exploded above a rural area, injuring nearly 1,000 people. edward lawrence report fist are -- reports for wjz, people thought the world was coming to an end. [ explosion ] >> reporter: the meteor exploded over a small russian town and caused a shock wave. glass shattered, injuring hundreds of people. this woman went to the hospital with a bloody arm. other his cuts on their faces and heads. the explosion rocked a mountain range, about 900 miles outside. cameras caught it as it streaked across the sky. scientists say it was at least the size of a traveling bus. some fragments fell to the ground. but it's unclear if they hit anyone. the meteor came without warning, stunning a canadian hockey player, now living in russia. >> i hear this loud bang. i live in a 24-story building on the 23rd floor. and all of a sudden, i look up, and the lights are shaking. and i hear car alarms going off. it was just incredible. >> reporter: a zinc factory was badly damaged. both the roof and wall collapsed. meteor strikes with such large impacts are rare. >> these things happen once every few decades or centuries. >> and the european space agency says the meteor is not connected to the asteroid that passed close to earth today but did not cause an explosion. >> looks frightening. >> yes. very. still ahead at 5:00. say cheese. rapper two chains per hour. brake lights continue from edmondson avenue to liberty road. we're also seeing a lot of volume on the outer loop. 70 westbound, still going to be quite a struggle for you there, from 29 over to marriottsville road. and 95, the delay on 95 just continues to expand. it's from russell street over to whitemarsh boulevard, at this point. as far as accidents go, 100 eastbound at 295. also in some me time for debbie phelps. >> all the years that i took care of my children -- i didn't take care of myself the way i should have. and i thought, i need to take a step forward and be able to take a look at me. >> and one of her children is michael phelps. the most decorated olympian of all time. but now its his mother's turn. to put her heart to the test and learn more about heart disease. the number 1 killer of women. >> these are things that i put on the back burner. do i exercise every day? no, i don't. >> reporter: dr. shannon winacker says most women don't take time to focus on themselves. and that's part of the dangers of heart disease. winicker says most patients don't know they have it until a heart attack or stroke occurs. that's why it's called the silent killer. >> you have to put yourself on that priority list. and the sooner you can do it, the better. >> reporter: and not taking care of their health can cost thousands of women. compare it to breast cancer, which kills 40,000 women every year. heart disease kills 200,000 women in the same time frame. >> we want to be around for a good long time. at least i do, as a mom. >> and one suggestion from doctors for a healthy heart is exercising more. phelps says her son michael, offered to become her personal trainer. she kindly turned him down. she said his workout routines are just brutal. back to you. >> that let's take a look at temps right now. it's dropping just a little bit. we still have cloudy skies moving in. 54 here. 55 in washington. just west of us, it's dropped already down to 40 in leigherstown -- hagerstown. 40 there. 30 in oakland. you go 150 miles or so. and it's going to get much colder. 41 in cumberland. still in the 50s and 40s close to the bay. and in the ocean area, it's certainly cooler. dew point above freezing at 33. rain just to the west of the city now. light rain activity, columbia at 54 and 45 by rock hall. we have southeast winds to the west of us. the winds going back to the west to northwest. that is allowing colder air moving in. and colder air will be with us all weekend long. here's that weak kind of frontal boundary. 54 here. 60s south of d.c. west of the front, in the 30s. 32 now, near elkin. light snow in that area. rain and snow mixed up here. north of chambersburg. that's all light snow from pittsburgh west. this front moved through tonight. get some rain showers later on as it does get a little colder, snowflakes mixing in. and there may be a light accumulation, as you mentioned, north of the city. mainly on the lawns. the ground is just so warm on the streets around 60 degrees. but tomorrow, we have a slightly different scenario. we'll have colder air coming in from the north. you can already see the cold temps up there. and there's low pressure that moves through the area tonight. kind of re-forms off the coast. it will drag that colder air back around the region. so we -- may have a little additional enhancement of precip in the afternoon, snow showers. i think probably the best chance may be actually right along the coast if it's cold enough or far western maryland. we are kind of in between. but we may see perhaps an inch, north. city, mainly in the lawns as i mentioned. -- lawns as i mentioned. but you can see rounds of snow coming in as i said. front is coming through. light precip, certainly going to get a lot colder. then it kind of moves up toward new england. eastern new england, mainly main -- maine and eastern canada can see near blizzard conditions by tomorrow. new york may see an inch or so. but colder weather here for sunday. only in the low 30s. but the sun returns. north winds on the bay. 10 to 15 knots tomorrow. sunrise 7:56. tonight, then, early. a little rain. and a rain of snow showers coming in later on. but still above freezing at 34 tomorrow. still gets up to 40. probably in the 30s in the afternoon, with a bit of afternoon snow possible. talking snow showers and maybe a light dusting again north of the city primarily. don't expect to see anything on the roads until it gets below freezing, which probably won't happen until later tomorrow evening. after dinner. >> okay. called, family is saying about the case. mental health and guns. what can be done to prevent people with mental health issues from gaining access to lethal weapons? it's a history lesson, wrapped nup -- up in artwork. i'll tell you how a baltimore artist is paying tribute to little-known african american inventors for black history month. first here's 5:31. mostly cloudy and 54 degrees. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. a murder-suicide rocks the university of maryland college park campus. wjz learns the shooter had a history of mental illness. wjz is live. monique griego has more on the issue of mental health and gun control. monique? >> kai, as you said, the shooter was being treated for mental illness, he was still able to legally purchase firearms. and that has some people questioning state policy. >> reporter: early tuesday morning in college park, police say 23-year-old university of maryland student dayvon green shot his two roommates, killing one before turning the gun on himself. his motive, still not clear. but detectives say green suffered from mental illness. >> it keeps coming back. and people that do these acts are seriously disturbed. >> reporter: psychologist dr. jim dassinger says while green may have been treated for mental issues, health professionals don't always know when someone is going to snap. >> we can only predict behavior if there is a history of violent behavior. we're evenly going by the track record. >> reporter: despite his condition, green was able to legally purchase guns. governor martin o'malley is trying to limit the access certain mental health patients have to firearms. in colorado, investigators found the suspects had some type of partial -- personality disorder. >> if someone makes a credible threat, whether it be to health care provider or educator or other that, should be reported to law enforcement. and law enforcement should have to investigate that. >> but they also found mental illness alone is not an indicator of violence. it showed drugs, alcohol and other issues play a major role. >> such as anger, despair, greed. some of these human things that we have. they're what lead people to act out violently. >> reporter: ask it -- and it has been reported that green suffered from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. but that has not been confirmed. governor o'malley is also looking to ban assault rifles and require fingerprinting of gun buyers. rally in harford included political leaders and parents of the victims at sandy hook. if you can't get on a plane without having a background check, you shouldn't be buy a gun without a background check. >> other speakers included collin goddard. he is one of the survivors of the massacre at virginia tech. the group called for universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons. an estimated 5500 people attended that rally. gun violence is also on the agenda for president obama. he travels to chicago for a youth anti-violence program. and as tara mergener reports for wjz, the president's day started with a ceremony at the white house, attended by some of the sandy hook families. >> reporter: president obama wiped away a tear as he honored the six adults killed in the sandy hook elementary school shooting. >> they gave their lives to protect the precious children in their care. they gave all they had for the most innocent and helpless among us. >> reporter: family members accepted the awards on behalf of the women who are among 18 to receive the nation's second highest civilian honor, the presidential citizens medal. bill's wife mary was the school psychologist. >> it's a high honor. all i could hope is that if i were in the same situation, that i would have the same courage that she had and dawn had and natalie had to run out the door and confront what was going on that day. >> reporter: after the ceremony, the president left the white house for chicago, to rally support for his state of the union proposals, including tighter gun control. >> reporter: the head of the national rifle association, wayne lapierre, responded to the president's state of the union address. >> it's not about keeping kids safe at school. that wasn't even mentioned in the president's speech. >> reporter: lapierre renewed his call for more armed guards and schools. and accused the president of politicizing the sandy hook tragedy. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the president is pushing a new ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, as well as universal background checks. while the n.r.a. opposes all three, expanded background checks are getting some traction on capitol hill. grammy-nominated rapper two chains is arrested on maryland's eastern shore on drug charges. state police say the rapper was charged with possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, following a traffic stop on his way to perform at the university of maryland eastern shore. two chains, whose real name is taheed epips, tweeted this picture saying, lock me up then wanted pictures. two chains was released with a citation. prosecutors charged olympian oscar pistorious with premeditated murder of his model girlfriend. the man who once inspired the world could spend the rest of his life in prison. >> oscar pistorious held his head in his hand and sobbed as prosecutors accused him of killing his girlfriend. he is charged with killing model reeva steenkam. prosecutors say he shot his girlfriend in the early morning hours of valentine's day, in a possible domestic dispute. family members issued a statement, insisting the world famous sprinter is not guilty of murder. they wrote, oscar pistorius has made history as an olympic and paralympic sportsman. he would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of reeva. police say he shot the super model four times in the head and upper body. local media reports gunshots blasted through a bathroom door. the shooting is making headlines around would the world. the sprinter was nicknamed blade runner for his proset thissic running blade. a writer for the new york magazine got a surprising invitation while interviewing him last year. >> we went to the firing range and shot his 9-millimeter semi automatic pistol. >> reporter: police say they recovered a 9-millimeter pistol, the same gun believed to be in the killing. pistorius is due back in court monday. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> a bail hearing is expected next week. but police are expected to reject the request. former anne arundel county executive john leopold's request for a new trial is denied. the law is vague. and none of his conduct was criminal. but the circuit court judge, who presided over the trial said the appeal was, and i quote, without merit. leopold was convicted of misconduct in office last month. he will be sentenced next month. well, today, 16 people filed applications to fill leopold's seat. and as alex demetrick reports, the field now includes the acting county executive. >> reporter: surrounded by family. john hammond stepped out of his annapolis home, as anne anne anne arundel's acting county executive. a job he was appointed to and wants to continue. >> i am seeking to fill the remaining term of mr. leopold. >> reporter: who resigned after a criminal conviction with still 21 montes to go in office. hammond is a prior county councilmember and was working as chief administrative officer when the council named him as acting executive. he wants the next 21 months to -- >> put the issues of the past couple of years behind us. and reinvigorate the county. >> reporter: those issues include leopold's use of police for personal matters, including romantic rendezvouses. hammond says he will continue to drive himself in a pickup. but 15 other top jobs here, including former maryland first lady kendall ehrlich. >> if the voters could vote on this, i think i would be very strongly the favorite. so i'm hoping that the council will hear that message. >> reporter: february 21st, the county council will interview all of those who have applied for the job and that night will vote in a new county executive. >> it's a unique set of circumstances for which i'm uniquely qualified. >> i've got tribute to people like george grand, who invented the golf tee, to graham's invention of the cell phone. >> i wanted to get some people interested in history. maybe young people interested in math and science. hopefully some of the young people that look at the piece will be able to do something extraordinary with their lives. >> reporter: he says it is often overshadowed by the latest trends and street violence. >> i understand how they think. because i grew up in baltimore. i grew up in the neighborhood. but i was fortunate to have a mother that told me that i could dream. >> reporter: and cloudy skies here on wednesday. a little rain right now around the region. denise? >> all right. thank you, bob. questions remain after the body of christopher dorner is identified in a burned-outer cabin in the southern california mountains. lis say the former officer killed four people in a revenge campaign against the los angeles police department. it has not been determined how dorner died. it is also not clear how the fire started inside the cabin. police said it was not burned down on purpose. two days before the shootout, a million-dollar reward was offered for the capture and
