And we are waiting a live announcement from president obama about the resignation of attorney general eric holder. We will bring it to you when it happens. We take you to the white house, where president obama is about to make the announcement of the resignation of attorney general eric holder. Eric holder has borne my burden. And he said he thought six weeks was a pretty good run. Agrees. E his family like me, eric married up. He and his wife, dr. Sharon malone, have been great friends to michelle and me for years. I know they are excited to get there their dad back for a while. So this is bittersweet, but with his typical dedication, eric has agreed to stay on as attorney general until i nominate a successor and that is confirmed by the senate. Which means we will have a chance to add to a proud career of public service, one that began nearly 40 years ago as a young prosecutor in the department he now runs. He was there for 12 years, taking on political corruption until president reagan named him to the bench as a judge. Later, president clinton called him back. Thetold, eric has served at justice five and under six president s of both parties. Acting attorney general at the start of george w. Bushs firstterm. He has shownt all, a deep and abiding commitment to one of our most cherished ideals as a people. That is, equal justice under the law. As younger men, eric and i both studied law, and i chosen to serve as attorney general that justicelieves is not just an abstract theory. It is a living and breathing principle. It is about how our laws interact with our daily lives, about whether we can make an honest living, whether we can provide for our families, whether we feel safe in around communities and welcomed in our own country. The words the founder set the paper to paper apply to every single one of us, not just some. Thats why i made him americas lawyer, the peoples lawyer. That comes with a big portfolio, from counterterrorism to civil rights, public corruption, whitecollar crime, alongside the incredible men and women of the Justice Department. Men and women he is proud of and will deeply miss. Eric has done a superb job. He worked sidebyside with our Intelligence Community and the department of Homeland Security to keep us safe from terrorist attacks and to counter violent extremism. On his watch, federal courts successfully prosecuted hundreds of terror cases, proving the system isnest justice capable of delivering justice to the worlds most wanted terrorist. He has rooted out corruption and violent crime. The fbi under his watch successfully took down the largest mafia takedown in american history. He has worked closely with eight and local state and local lawenforcement officials to make sure they have resources to get the job done. He managed funds to make sure that when budgets took a hit, thousands of cops were able to stay on the beat nationwide. He helped save our markets for manipulation and consumers from financial fraud. Since 2009, the Justice Department has brought more than 60 cases against financial institutions, and won some of the largest settlement in history. Billion, much of it returned to ordinary americans who were badly hurt. He has worked passionately to make sure our criminal Justice System remains the best in the world. He knows too many outdated policies, no matter how wellintentioned, perpetuate a destructive cycle in too many committees. ,o eric addressed disparities, reworked mandatory minimum and promoted alternatives to incarceration. Since i took effort office, thanks to his efforts the overall crime rate and overall incarceration rate have gone down about 10 . Thats the first time they have declined together, at the same time, in more than 40 years. Erics proudest achievement might be reinvigorating and restoring the core mission to what he calls the conscience of the building, the civil rights division. He has been relentless against attack on voting rights, because no citizen, including our service members, should have to jump through hoops to exercise the most from mental funda mental right. He challenged discriminatory Immigration Law that not only challenged legal immigrant, and ron horseman but made it harder for law enforcement. Against Human Trafficking and hate crimes, because no one in america should be afraid to walk down the street because of the color of their skin, the love in their heart, the faith they practice. He dramatically advanced the cause of native americans working closely with their communities. Several years ago he recommended our government stop defending the defense of marriage act, a decision that was vindicated by the Supreme Court and opened the door to federal recognition of samesex marriage and federal benefits for samesex couples. Pretty good track record. Erics father was an immigrant who served in the army in world war ii, only to be refused service at lunch counters in the nation he defended. But he and his wife raised their son to believe the promise was real. And that son grew up to the attorney general of the United States, and thats something. That is why eric worked so hard. Not only in my ministration, but up thisdes, to open country to more striving, dreaming kids like him. Liberty, andlife, the pursuit of happiness are made real for all of us. Kids eric, sharon and his will be free to pursue more happiness of their own. So thanks to erics efforts, will more americans. Regardless of race, religion, gender, creed, sexual orientation, or disability, they will receive equal treatment under the law. So i want to say thank you. Thank you to the men and women of the Justice Department who worked day in and day out for the American People. We could not be more grateful for every thing you have done. Not just for the ministration, but for our country. [applause] [applause] i come to this moment with very mixed emotions. Proud of what the men and women of the department of justice have accomplished over the last six years, and at the same time very sad that i will not be a formal part of the great things this department and this president will accomplish. Thank you, mr. President , for the opportunity you gave me to serve, and for giving me the greatest honor of my professional life. We have been great colleagues, but the bonds between us are much deeper than that. In good times and in bad, in things personal and things professional, you have been there for me. Im proud to call you my friend. Im also grateful for the support you have given me and the department as we have made real the visions you and i have always shared. I often think of those early talks between us about our might help to craft a more perfect union. Work remains to be done, but our list of a competent accompl ishments is real. Over the last six years, are administration, your administration, has made historic gains in realizing the principles of the founding documents and has fought to protect the most sacred american right, the right to vote. We begin to realize the promise of equality for our lgbt brothers and sisters and their families. We have begun to significantly reform our criminal Justice System and rethink those t hank those for the communities they protect. Faith inith kept the power of the judicial system to fairly and effectively adjudicate any cases brought before it, including those that belong involve the security of the nation we both love so dearly. We have taken steps to protect the environment and make more fair the rules by which commercial enterprises operate. And we have held accountable those who would harm the American People through violent means or the misuse of economic or political power. I have loved the department of justice ever since i was a young boy. I watched Robert Kennedy prove how the department can and must always be a choice force for that which is right. I hope i have done honor to the faith you have put in me, mr. President , and to the legacy of all those who has served before me. I would like to thank the Vice President , who i have known for so many years, and in whom i have found great wisdom, support, and a shared vision of what america can and should be. I want to recognize my good friend, valerie jarrett, who ive been fortunate to work with from the beginning of what started out as an improbable idealistic effort with a young senator from illinois who we were both right to believe could achieve greatness. I have had the opportunity to serve in your distinguished cabinet and work with a white house chief of staff, white house staff ably led by denis mcdonough, which has done much to make real the promise of our democracy. Each of the men and women i have come to know will be lifelong friends. Whatever my compass mince accomplishments, they could not be achieved without the support of people who are not here today. My parents, eric and miriam made menurtured me, and believe in the value of individual effort and the greatness of this nation. My time in public service, which now comes to an end, would not have been made possible without the sacrifices, too often unfai r, made by the best three kids a father could ask for. Thank you. Thank the want to woman who sacrificed the most and allowed me to follow my dreams. Shes the foundation of all our family is and the basis of all i have become. My wife sharon is the unsung hero, and she is my life partner. Thank you for all you have done. I love you. In the months ahead, i will leave the department of justice, but i will never leave work. I will continue to serve adn and try to find ways to make our nation more true to its founding ideals. I want to thank the dedicated servants who form the backbone of the United States department of justice for their tireless work and the efforts they will continue, and for the progress they have made that will outlast us all. And i want to thank you all for joining me on a journey that now moves in another direction, but that will always be guided by the pursuit of justice and aimed at the north star. Thank you. [applause] hearing, have been attorney general eric holder announcing his resignation from the white house. Saying he will never leave the work. Saying he is proud to have been there for six years.
