They originally did not have enough money for the fare, he says, but he ended up offering them a free ride, taking them i say, okay, guys have a good night. All of a sudden, one of them puts his hand and slashes my forehead. I dont know what he used. I didnt see it. All of a sudden put the car and run away because i dont want them run after me or whatever. Reporter a few minutes after that slashing, investigators believe the three suspects attacked another victim, a 25yearold here nearby at south 2nd street and whyte avenue. They say he was put into a chokehold and his cell phone stolen. The nypd took them into custody. Police are fighting a recent increase in stabbings and slashing citywide still several people here say they are surprised by the overnight attacks in their neighborhoods. Im actually shocked because i didnt think that could happen around here. Last person i heard that [ inaudible ] reporter as for the cab driver, he says he is proud the Police Caught his passengers in no time. In williamsburg, Andrea Grymes, cbs 2 news. Police dont believe the cabbie and passengers got into they say the charges are pending against the three men now in custody all in their 20s. In the wake of this violence, cbs 2 is demanding answers. Today mayor de blasio admitted as the nypd succeeds in taking more guns off the streets, now knives, box cutters and other sharp instruments are the problem. Guns are being taken off the street in an unprecedented way. Some people, unfortunately, are turning to a different weapon. Thank god typically a less Deadly Weapon but they are turning to a different weapon. Well, guess what that means . The nypd will now go get those weapons. Reporter the mayor is right. The nypd is trying to get and other instruments used to slash and stab off the streets. They have confiscated 212 weapons in the subway since the first. More than last year. The crimes continue. The cabbie stabbing just latest. The nypd beefed up subway patrols but people are worried about walking on the street. Everybody is worried about something random happening to them. Box cutters, knives, razors, you put it in your pocket, no one it doesnt look like a gun. You can see see the shape of a gun. These weapons are convenient. Reporter yesterday a program was announced to send more cops into the subways at night to protect people from crime. Mr. Mayor, um, in the last 24 hours, a cabbie was stabbed for no reason, a Dunkin Donuts employee was slashed for moving a homeless person out of the store, and a 91 yearold woman was mugged in what are you going to do to protect people above ground . Marcia, i have said it to you before and you ask the same question over and over. I believe in the nypd. They are continuing to drive down crime. Anytime they see a pattern, they address it with a very great precision and very great impact. Reporter what can you do psychologically to make people in new york city feel safer . It is a very significant breakthrough. Reporter words not taken lightly but dr. David specter says it was a eureka moment when a new drug he and colleagues invented chewed up and destroyed Breast Cancer cells without harming healthy cells. Most Exciting Research finding in my career, the effect was so dramatic, um, it was not something that i could have actually predicted. Reporter his recently published findings explain the drug acts as a smart bomb, tested on mice it seeks out and latches on to whats called noncoding rna. A little understood cousin of dna in the cell nucleus. The rna destroyed they discovered thats what breast tumors need to multiply and spread. The tumor totally changes from a very aggressive state to a far less aggressive state, and at the same time, metastasis, which is the most critical aspect of this disease is reduced significantly. Reporter a cancer cell densely packed with rna but within weeks of treatment much of it was gone. So far we dont see any significant side effects. Some say that wont stop anything. We should be providing adequate space for those pedestrians to walk instead of forcing them to spill in the way of passing cars and trucks. Reporter his solution . Take away a lane of traffic from drivers and give it to pedestrians by coning it off just for the peak evening hours. Well protecting the lives of pedestrians. Reporter one proposal has been to give an extra lane of traffic coned off with enforcement for the three hours from maybe 5 to 8. So to that specific proposal i havent heard before. Reporter members of Yeshiva University and local leaders are standing right outside of the Dunkin Donuts storefront on audubon avenue and west 185th street to confront the hatred spewed inside monday afternoon. The students were inside enjoying a break. Take off their head coverings. Reporter police say the man angered by the two yeshiva students mere presence were shouting at them, screaming things like take off your yarmulke. Youre a liar. Youre religion is a lie. New yorks attorney general released new video of raynette turners final hours along with a report showing its findings in her death investigation. The 42yearold was arrested for shoplifting last july. She was transported to the hospital because she wasnt feeling well but then was returned to her cell. Hours later she was found dead. An autopsy determined turner died from an enlarged heart and chronic cocaine and morphine use. The attorney general has now cleared the mount vernon wrongdoing. Her death was a tragedy and while we found that the prosecution for criminally negligent homicide would be unstainable under the facts of this case. The report issued several recommendations including ensuring inperson cell checks of detainees. A warning for families in new jersey after a pet store was shut down. The owner accused of knowingly selling sick animals and thats not all. Cbs 2s Jessica Schneider has more now from middlesex county. Reporter on new years day, ina shepherd thought she was bringing ninemonth owned mini schnauzer dreidel home to start making years worth of memories with her two kids. But less than 24 hours later, he was sick running a 105 degree fever. 30 days later, dreidel died of distemper, a viral illness with no known cure. My kids every day talk about our dog, that we have only had for such a short period of time but everyone got attached. Reporter shepherd purchased the dog at this in East Brunswick new jersey. The owner is now sacked with 267 counts of animal cruelty after Officials Say he repeatedly sold sick dogs to unsuspecting families. He denies he did anything wrong. Every pet store has sick dogs. Reporter officials found three dead dogs in the freezer of his East Brunswick store and a 10yearold German Shepherd died days after authorities found her in an isolation room at the pet store. The indian point reactor was shut down for three days in december after a power loss to several high voltage transmission lines. The plans announced today if theres a strike reporter whether you drive, ride a bus or normally take a train, new Jersey Transit officials are warning all customers that a potential strike by the rail union will have a severe impact on our roads. We will not be able to provide the level of service or the capacity that our rail Service Currently provides to our customers. Reporter their plan includes increased bus service and path, light rail and ferry service. A key component of the plan is using strategically located park rides.
