A mortuary worker now says at least 15 people are dead in an attack on a college campus. At least 60 others are hurt. Mass gunmen stormed Garissa University in eastern kenya just before dawn. Police say the men are now holed up in a dorm and holding an unknown number of students hostage. The u. S. Embassy in nairobi is calling this a terrorist attack but right now its unclear which group is responsible. You can count on nbc 10 to bring you any new information throughout the morning. Happening today, new jersey senator Robert Menendez is expected to be in federal court after a grand jury indicted him yesterday on bribery and corruption charges. Senator menendez will face a federal judge for the First Time Since the criminal charges of bribery, conspiracy and making false statements were announced. So we came here to the Camden County offices and this community to gauge reaction to the allegations menendez a top democrat accepted nearly 1 million in gifts and Campaign Contributions in exchange for political favors. Now, the top democrat and former chair of the Senate ForeignRelations Committee is accused of using his powerful seat on capitol hill to benefit this man, wealthy florida eye doctor salomon melgen. The indictment says senator menendez accepted golf trips, lavish vacations, as well as tens of thousands of dollars in contributions to a Legal Defense fund. We spoke to his constituents. Has he been Proven Guilty yet . Not yet. Well, you know, this is america. Youre innocent until youre Proven Guilty. I hope its not true. But if it is, then hes got to pay the price. Reporter Justice Department prosecutors say dr. Melgens business raked in millions. But his girlfriends got visas. New from overnight, Philadelphia Police say a masked man broke into a home in west oak lane. Police say the man kicked in the door and pointed a gun at a woman inside. When the woman screamed for police, the intruder ran away without taking anything. Police are still looking for the man. This Morning Police are trying to solve a murder mystery, and the family of the man who was killed and dumped in the river is looking for answers. 69yearold vito maglio sr. Never came home last december. Investigators found his suv burned and with blood and a shell casing inside. Last friday crews pulled his body from the river in east falls. Police say he had been shot twice in the head. For the people that did this you know what . I mean god will have to you know, take care of you when your time comes. And the maglio family is asking anyone with information about vitos death to call Philadelphia Police. Happening today, a judge will sentence a man whos accused in connection with five sexual assaults in atlantic city. In some of the cases, they say patel posed as a Police Officer and carried a fake gun before assaulting the women. Now, this all happened in the summer of 2012. Last year a jury convicted patel on nearly two dozen counts. He faces up to 200 years in prison. Today a teenager accused of knocking out a 60yearold man at a subway station in philadelphia is expected to turn himself in to police. Authorities say this Surveillance Video from the 15th street station on monday shows the teen punching the man. The blow broke the mans jaw, gave him concussionlike symptoms. Video taken earlier shows the victim and the teen arguing on a train. Police say they used facial Recognition Software to identify the suspect. Really good piece of technology that can assist in expediting an investigation or at least giving us a pool of potential suspects. Now, this is the second assault at a septa platform in three weeks. In the other, a group of teens beat up another teen at the walnut locust station. Investigators say the attacks are not related. 5 35. Happening right now, several airport workers are on strike officially. Look at this. A live picture from Philadelphia International airport. Now, when they all arrived, they say that theyll have about 500 baggage handlers wheelchair attendants, and airport cleaners. Who are expected to be part of this picket today. They staged strikes in the past at the airport, and in those cases, it did not have any impact on flights. Many of these workers make minimum wage and dont have Health Benefits or sick days. Thats why theyre striking today. Theyre calling for raises and those benefits. Theyre not employed by Philadelphia International airport. Instead they work for the contractors and provide services for us airways and other airlines. Telling their story. I turned around. Thats when i had the gun pointed towards my face. This morning we hear from the firefighters who were held hostage inside their fire station in Montgomery County. Why they say theyre ready to forgive the gunman who they know very well. New information about a sinkhole affecting a major road in Montgomery County. Penndot Officials Say the bridge on plymouth road will not reopen. It needs to be replaced. Penndot is examining the sinkhole activity underneath and next to the bridge in order to design a new foundation. An outright eyesore. Residents in one Bucks County Community have been fighting a proposed cell phone tower that they said would destroy the landscape. This morning we have the decision. And missing medal. Homeowners at the jersey shore say criminals are cutting the cords and swiping spouts right from their yards. Philadelphia police are hoping this video will lead to the arrest of a car vandal. Look at this. The image appears to show a man wearing a trench coat and mask using a butchers knife to damage a womans car in roxboro. The woman said her car has been vandalized several times since last summer. She recently installed this Security Camera that captured the video of the man causing more than 4,000 in damage to her car. Slashed all of her tires, too. Well police in Atlantic County are looking for thieves who stole garden lights and other things right from the yards of homes. Right off of homes in some cases. People in margate have reported about a dozen thefts in recent months. Police say thieves are pulling fixtures from the ground even ripping copper downspouts off of the sides of homes. Theyre taking that metal to scrapyards to sell it. Officers want people who live in that area to be on the lookout. Tough to distinguish between whos doing legitimate work in town and whos there to rip off from the houses. And Police Believe this investigation could get even larger as more people return to their shore homes this spring and discover things missing. Its a quarter to 6 00. Happening today, Millionaire Robert Durst will appear in court to face weapons charges. Police arrested the real estate heir last month in new orleans. They said that they found him with a pistol and marijuana. His attorneys plan to argue the fbi searches of his room is illegal. They want him extradited to california in connection with the executionstyle murder of a friend 15 years ago. Durst was the subject of a recent hbo documentary. A Montgomery County firehouse will reopen two days after several firefighters were taken hostage inside. Nbc 10 spoke with the four firefighters from lamont volunteer fire company in elkins park. One of their former colleagues is now under psychiatric observation after holding them at gunpoint tuesday morning. The firefighters say he was upset about being fired. Theyve identified him as paul jordan. His former colleagues did not want their faces shown, but they did show us damage to the firehouse that was done and said they forgive jordan. So then he got mad and he shot a shot inside the wall which was about six inches from one of our guys. If he wanted to he could have killed us all. We still love him. And when he can have visitation the spiritual side said i will be there to see him. Authorities said they convinced jordan to release the hostages. He then surrendered to s. W. A. T. Officers. New information this morning about an Apartment Fire in trenton. Sky force 10 was over the bellevue Avenue Apartments yesterday. The red cross is now helping eight families forced from their apartments. No one was hurt in the fire. Officials are still trying to determine how it started. A bucks county neighborhood has won its fight to stop verizon from building a new cell phone tower. That tower would have gone up behind the William Penn Fire Company, but last night the zoning board voted against that tower facing heavy pressure from the community. The William Penn Fire Company wanted the tower as a way to improve communications. And the fire company also would have gotten money from a lease through verizon. But neighbors say the tower would have been an eyesore. Nobody really wanted it. I know it would have benefited the firehouse, but at you know a tremendous cost to the town because it would be a permanent fixture here. The hiphop artist common was going to deliver the address at Kean University in union county. Common, as you know, won the Academy Award this year for composing a song from the movie selma. But its another song from 15 years ago that state police dont like, a song is about asada shakur. Who was convicted of killing a state trooper in 1973. Shes currently still on the run in cuba. Police say commons song paints a sympathetic portrait of a cop killer. Indiana lawmakers are racing against the clock to fix a religious freedom law that has come under fire from groups across the nation. Legislators want to fix language that many say is discriminatory. And they want to do it before the easter break and the ncaa final four in indianapolis on saturday. Indianas governor said the law he signed protects religious freedom and is not a license to discriminate against samesex couples. And in this area Newcastle County has banned all countyfunded employee travel to indiana. Thats in direct response to that religious freedom law in that state. Nbc 10s Jim Rosenfield met with the president of the world meeting of families who told us the Economic Impact of the event in philadelphia is already eclipsing original estimates. Clearly the Economic Impact has increased significantly since we started this. So beyond 418 million coming into this region. We really wouldnt know unless we did another Economic Impact study.
