Hourbyhour. Jillian mele standing by with an update. One accident out in the area right now out of Montgomery County and hatfield. Clemens road at forty food road. Blue route shows traffic moving along just fine. No accidents on the blue route. Live look and drive time is about 17 to 18 minutes in both directions on the blue route between 76 and 95. Area bridges are pretty quiet this morning, including the ben franklin bridge and this is the view from camden and you can see only a few cars out there, the good news were problem free on all the area bridges and so far not reporting any big issues on mass transit. Chris . Lets get you back to the breaking news weve been following in north philadelphia. We just learned in the past 40 minutes that one person was killed in this fire at a homeless shelter. Nbc 10 Monique Braxton is on the scene for us right now. What is the situation outside that shelter right now . Chris, its a tragic morning here in north philadelphia. If you look up to the third floor, that is where the fire xhis commissionerer said they believe thats where the fire began. Took 16 minutes to bring it under control and dozens of firefighters were called here just before 3 00 this morning. They told us they do believe where they found a persons body is where the fire began in that front third floor apartment. They also told us that they believe he may have had some sort of disability because there was a walker nearby. And heres what the fire commissioner had to say when we asked about the presence of smoke alarms. This time we are still trying to discern whether or not the alarm system was working. We had mixed reports. Some people say the alarm was working and some say it wasnt working. And the fire commissioner also told us he believes there may have been some sort of alarm inside because close to two dozen people were evacuating as firefighters arrived here on the scene. In the next half hour, he talks to us about precautions everyone should take with the approaching Holiday Season whether youre smoking inside your room or cooking inside your home. Thats coming up in the next half hour. Live for now, north philadelphia, Monique Braxton, nbc 10 news. Now to a developing story. The search for a rape suspect. Police say he may be armed and dangerous. This started wednesday night in darby where a 14yearold girl was sexually assaulted. The investigation led police to west philadelphia. Katy zachary is live in darby. Police have been in contact with the suspect. Katy, tell us more about that. Yeah, tracy, there is a twist, though. Darby Borough Police say the suspect called them to say he is not turning himself in for the crime. Instead, officers will have to find him. So, right now you have officers in at least two areas, philadelphia and darby borough looking for the suspect who is 18yearold kassim hill. He is accused of luring a 14yearold girl into his mothers house earlier this week and raping her. According to police, a witness outside the home heard the teenage girls screams during the assault and knocked on the door to try to stop it and thats when the victim was able to run free. Went to the door to see who was banging and thats when she was able to get out. Weve been looking into 18yearold kassim hills criminal background. He is currently on probation. He has an extensive history in philadelphia including things like aggravated assault. Katy zachary, nbc 10 news. 5 04 now. This morning the suspect in carlesha freelandgaither. Extradited to face charges on a different case. The abduction information in philadelphia continues today. Investigators here have filed federal kidnapping charges against barnes. Heres whats new from overnight. We got a copy of the criminal complaint and it says he conf s confessed to the kidnapping and told investigators he did not know carlesha, the 22yearold is resting with her family at an undisclosed location. The other kidnapping charge that barnes is charged with. Vai, for the first time were hearing from the mother of that 16yearold victim there. Chris, understandably, a lot of anger from that mother over the attack allegedly by a man who has a very long criminal history. Last night in charles city, virginia, the police laid out their case. Charles city is just outside of richmond and its there that he was wanted for the attempted murder, kidnapping and rape of a 16yearold girl last month. Barnes was capture ed wednesday and they got a big break in the case when they released the video of the kidnapping scene and police in virginia noticed a detail from that video. We had information he was driving a ford taurus and then through the video in philadelphia you see the Virginia State inspection sticker on the front glass and were only one of the few states that have a sticker in that same position. Well, virginia authorities then called the car dealership with barnes purchased that vehicle and they were able to use the gps installed in the car. The mother of the virginia victim was asked about her daughters alleged attacker. We blurred her face just to protect her identity. I just want to kill him. Just want to kill him. The burns of her skin. My daughter didnt look like herself. It was devastating to watch. The only thing i have to say to him, god bless him. He didnt succeed. And i hope that [ bleep ]. Barns hit the teenage girl with a shovel, drove her to his house and then poured gasoline and bleach on her. That victim, by the way, is still recovering in a virginia hospital. Why he should get the reward money. 47 degrees outsed is. New from overnight, a woman drove her suv into the side of a church at osage avenue and south 61st street. The driver lost control and smash under to the taylor Tabernacle Church around 11 00 last night. She is being treated for minor injuries. Happening today, hearing is set in the case involving the land belonging to Jerry Sandusky former charity. The second mile. The charity is trying to sell the land. The second mile was founded by sandusky aimed at helping atrisk youth. Sandusky, as you know, serving 30 to 60 years in prison on dozens of counts of child sex abuse. Also happening today transit workers are expected to vote on whether to ratify their new vote with septa. The two sides came to a tentative agreement last night avoiding a strike that would have halted buses, subways and trolleys. New this morning, eric frein has a new court date. The man accused of killing a Pennsylvania State trooper and wounding another in that september ambush will have his preliminary hearing on september 9th. The hearing set for next wednesday he was captured after alluding police for seven weeks. Its a dry morning, but the temperatures are dropping and the wind is picking up. Youre looking live here at the scene of what was a very active fire at this homeless shelter in north philadelphia. The 22nd and osage. Im sorry, 22nd and ontario street. The fire broke out around 3 00. You can see that its fully under control now. But we do know that one person was killed in the fire. 23 other people were displaced staying in that shelter overnight. Landmarks around philadelphia, you may notice, taking on a shade of green today. That is to mark the 30th anniversary of philabundunce. That organization was founded 30 years ago by pam lawler who used her blue, not green Station Wagon to transport donated food to people in need all across the city. Today it serves 75,000 people every week. 75,000 across the Delaware Valley through a network of hundreds of agencies. Ph philabundance will celebrate and a big bash tonight to honor lawler at a beet hunger bash. Great organization. Well, a popular Discount Grocery chain will soon close its doors impacting dozens of stores and hundreds of employees. Bottom dollar food announced its 46 locations across southeastern pennsylvania and new jersey. Will shut done by the end of the year after the chain was bought by rival aldi. 1,500 local employees will be out of a job. It was just really a shock to me when everybody said, yeah, were closing. Right now its too soon to know which of these locations will eventually be open as aldi stores. We do have a list of the closing Bottom Dollar locations on nbc10. Com. From our delaware bureau. University of delaware planning to close two of its oldest halls. They will close at the end of the school year, spring 2015. Both were built in 1966. Each houses more than 700 students. The University Says those buildings need to close because of their age and condition but they dont plan to demolish them right away. In the meantime the university of delaware will open a new dining and Residence Hall and also renovating the harrington complex. Both of those should be done by the end of next school year. No interruption of housing for freshman students. New information this morning, four more people are facing charges of filing false claims for Hurricane Sandy relief money. A total of 20 people are now charged with filing for sandy relief funds that they are not entitled to. If convicted, they could each get three to five years in prison. State officials in new jersey say they plan to go ahead with a project to build dunes and mar got atlantic county. The department of Environmental Protection said they have taken control of enough of the beach now to allow for the construction of those dunes. A lot of residents they dont want to see this, though. They had voted in favor of a referendum on tuesday that would have taken that battle to court. They object to this project saying it is costly and ineffective. Sunoco logistics moving ahead with a big pipeline project that will stretch across pennsylvania. The Company Announced yesterday it plans to invest 2. 5 billion in a pipeline that would move natural gas liquids like propane. It would provide four times the capacity to move that gas from the marcella drilling area in western pennsylvania to marcus hook facility in delaware county. Sunoco hopes to have that pipeline up and running in two years. If youre getting ready to head out the door on this friday. Lets check the roads for you. I was following one accident out there in hatfield clemens road, but that just cleared in the last few minutes. Right now were accident free, which is good news for drivers waking up and heading out the door right now. A live look in Chester County eastbound side of the route 30 bypass a few drivers out there and no slow downs and no accidents to report there. Heading into delaware, a live look at route 1 near the dover toll plaza where things are looking good. The other majors in delaware, 95. Both directions.
