The head of the union just fired back moments ago with a statement calling the operators actions heroic last night saying that the trains are so old theyre falling apart. A day after the orange line when youre heading to work theyre broken, theyre falling. The other day in ashmont the trains were delayed for an hour because of a fire. Reporter this redefined nightmare commute, passengers climbing through windows as their train filled with smoke. Moments later some struggling to catch their breath. Officials say a motor likely overheated and Governor Charlie Baker says that the employee on board did not do what he should have. The train was it started to smoke. Reporter but the president of the mbta carmen union says that the motorman had to lock the doors since some of the cars were beyond the platform and he manually opened some windows. He says if that lone motorman had help on board he could have handled the evacuation allowing the other to focus on mechanics. Boston City Council President michelle wu also calling for changes. Reporter a spokesperson sent out an outline of their fiveyear spending plan including 3. 7 billion to be spent on improving safety and reliability with new buses and trains including 152 new orange line cars scheduled to arrive in 2018.
