Good morning. And welcome to 11 news sunday morning im jennifer franciotti. And im lisa robinson. Lets take a look outside with our meteorologist, avery johnson. We have had temperatures mild and now the they are mott ter is skyrocketting. Temperatures in the mid to up ir40s. I may even have to bump up the High Temperature for today. Moving off the coast, we had some sprinkles in baltimore this morning, thats about it. Now the sunshine has us at 44 degrees at the airport but i saw 47 on tv hill and the highs today should at least get up into the low 50s and a few of you in the mid 50s. Winds gusting up to 20 miles an hour. Keep that in mind if you have outdoor activities. Well, if you heard a loud boom around the cold spring lane area. That was the reason, around 7 00 a. M. This morning bg e imploded the gas holder near west cold spring lane that has been out of use since 1997. It was really fast. It was kind of over and done with before i had a chance to focus on it. I wanted to see the piece of history that was gone. Short. It was fun to watch. Company says the 79yearold container has been made obsolete by upgrades to the gas system. Speaking about things that are fun to watch. A lot of people like to go to the races to see the crash. This one was really scary. Despite the accident they plan to go on today. It happened on the last lap of the nationwide series race. Coming out of the final turn in the checkered flag lap of the nationwide series in daytona, drivers jockeying for position started the multicar collision that sent number 32 driven by 20yearold kyle larsen airborne. His car careened into the catch fence designed to protect the crowd. The smoke and car sideways is really all i saw. Debris from the car including tires and engine flew into the grands where fans were seated to watch the race. We respondeded immediately. The trucks emergency person pell treated 14 at the infield care center. 14 others were transported to local hospitals. Ive been to nascar races for several years and never seen anything like this. Mr. Huckabys brother was injured but is expected to be ok. Safety officials are at the scene. Kyle larsens number 32 car was left in pieces, the entire front end sheered off by the collision. All of the drivers involved in the jawdropping crash, including larsen, walked away unharmed. Ive seen and been a part of a couple big ones but nothing like that. Speedway workers worked saturday evening to repair the cash fence and grandstand area. Were confident we will be ready for tomorrows event. For the famed running of the 55th daytona 500. And 11 news update this morning to a story first brought to you by the 11 news iteam, the medical examiner has now confirmed the two bodies found inside the burning car were murder victims. Just before 5 00 a. M. Neighbors reported hearing an explosion. On the scene police and crews found the car on fire with two victims in the car. At least one gone shot wound was suffered by each. One is a man and the other is a woman. The long litigation process is under way for hundreds of patients for Johns Hopkins dr. J. Dr. Nikita levy. He was a gynecologist accused of filming patients during examinations. A free meeting for patients of dr. Nikita levy the former Johns Hopkins gynecologist who was fired after allegations he taped patients during exams. Police say levy committed suicide after learning he was under investigation. Lawyers say they were giving out information on patient rights. And were introducing the public to members of our team who we hired to assist us in the investigation and litigation. And as far as many who were violated, the first lawsuits were filed friday. One of the first claimants. Its unnerving that i possibly could have been directly affected. Sickening. Even being exposed to that possibility could mean they are entitled to damages. Not just those photographed. According to a firm waiting to decide if it will file a lawsuit. Many people will argue just being exposed to the possibility of this and not knowing for six months, a year, or longer whether or not they were a victim could certainly cause them harm as well. He says if the hospital didnt follow its own policies and standard practice, that could open up another avenue to liability. Weve heard from many clients that breast and pelvic exams were done by dr. Levy without the presence of another person in the room and certainly if that occurred and that gave dr. Levy the opportunity to films as we all understand that he now did, that could expose hopkins to liability as well. And stays hospital has no comment on the lawsuits or hospital policies that could have been violated because they never comment on an ongoing litigation. Its so strining think that im calling the movie with the most nominations the dark horse, but lincoln is the dark horse to win. Daniel daylewis is favored to become the first threetime winner for best actor. And Tommy Lee Jones ask among heavyweights in supporting actors. Any one of the five nominees could win. Robert de niro and Silver Linings playbook costars could win as well. Zero dark thirtys Jessica Chastain is among a rival along with naomi watts and. Ask arn and make sure people have been satisfied. Check with b. B. B. You also want to make sure when you go to a tax preparer, ask how long they have been in that location. Avoid the fly by nights and who is going to represent you if there is a problem . So get references and go to somebody rep table. In maryland, a quick reminder. In maryland tax prepareers who do your maryland state taxes are required to register. So you want to make sure they are registered and have a personal preparer tax i. D. Number. So get a firm estimate in writing of what its going to cost you. Yes. They are going to get us the best or biggest. How will they know that . Thats a tip off. Also if they are going to charge you based on what they recoop for your refund . Walk away. May not be legal. They may stretch the truth a little bit. You want to make sure that the price is set right up front. It may differ with a long form or short form. If they are charging you hundreds and hundreds, try another place. Whats a good place . 200 300 for the simplest of forms. 800 and 900 is a little unrealistic in this area. Provide receipts. Yes. You want them to ask tons of questions. Strong interview then give them lots of receipts to show any deductions that you take. All that paperwork for a minimum of three years. So dont, once you give it to them. And make copies for yourself or them. Dont give them the only set, because what happens if they lose it . So give them good paperwork to support it and hold on to that paperwork in case they dont. Theres a big trend out there. Theres a lot of moss out there in aquariums and fairy gardens. As long as its your backyard, i guess thats good. Were going to make cocoa dama balls. You can put any plants in them. Orchids like the more air moving and how we do this . Yes. Pretty simple, really. How do this, we will take the root ball. What type of plant is this . A bulbtype fern. You can attach the moss efrl ways. You can use fishing line to go around it. A lot of the trendy people are using twine. Because you can see it . Yes. I dont like that look personally. You can also use green. But were going to use these things. They are fern pins. You just push them into the soil. If you want to put a couple pins in. That would be great. So what we do just attach it right here. And well just bring it on around this way. Whats nice about moss is you can tear it any way you want to or you can use. And you can make it any shape you want to make it. In order to water them you will either have to mist them or dunk them. You can bring up this wilder shape or and then a lot of weight to display it. Cindy, that uses the wire again. Youve got a hangling impact. Yes. And its cool here. They are ground together. I of love this the yellow primrose. It picks up the char truce. You said you heard the implosion this morning . Yes. It was brief but yes, heard it. You have had a lot going on in the last two years. What are you currently working on . Our first year was devoted to establishing a number of initiatives. Two is our Major Investigations Group to focus on repeat violent offenders. We have had some Great Success with that. The other thing we did was create a Community Prosecution model in which we divided the city into zones and assign Police Officers to the zones. Thats been very effect i. Weve seen that effectiveness in our second year. Which means weve seen an increase in our conviction rate. Up to 70 . The States Office has been effective in some of these initiatives. We have been able to incarcerate over 100 violent offenders in terms of Frederick Morrison convicted of a homicide. That was a specificly hard case because three witnesses reaccountanted. Were doing a lot of strategies to get convictions. The dragged her into an abandoned building. Those cases present real channels because you have a young victim and you have to work with her and get her james hammel was convicted of homicide and it showed the doggedness in the case and im sure everyone heard about the elder i said was lets it has to be a cooperation. So with the new commissioner are you having daly if not weekly meetings . Obviously he has his own plate full so to speak, same at mine. But im here to help whenever he needs that, he knows that. And we certainly are looking ahead. For some of your listeners and viewers, they may not really this but were moving out of the courthouse and into our own office space. The States Attorneys Office has been in the courthouse so well be able to interact with each other. And its going to lent a real air of professionalism to the office that i think is going to make us that more proficient. In proven communication. Absolutely. Youve got to have that kind of working environment where people can communicate with each other and interact. Doing it in the courtroom is going to make us more effective and the other thing we are going to work on is figuring out ways to address individuals who are charged and conflicted of crimes that we need to Baltimore City prison is full. Yes. And we need to think of ways to address these issues in a different way. Thats something im going to be devoting my attention to in the year ahead. Recenty you the legislation youre talking about is the governors package, which i support. It does essentially a number of things. It creates a system where people who want to purchase weapons orb fire arms have to go through a qualification process in order to get the weapon. They have to have some training, pay a fee, what came essentially the bill reduces this i think any kind of legislation that starts to curb gun violence, im in favor of. The forecast for tonight after the winds are gusty during the evening hours, they could be slow toward the evening. And a colder start to tomorrow. Then High Pressure builds in. Thats what is sitting over the midwest. But eventually this could be dumping heavy snow. And then so what the maybe a little bit of sleet towards the suburbs. Nothing major. Marvin was a very layered and complicated man, but he was a brilliant artist and he had a tough childhood. I play his father, and his father had a tough childhood. One of the things we talk about is breaking generational curses. The disfunction that we pass on from mother to son, mother to daughter, you know, families to families. And this play, unlike when we did it about six years ago is a lot more layered dramatically, because the oldest mother and the oldest father, she found her mothers and fathers memoirs. For example, what do we learn about marvin senior in this particular play without i cant give it away. But we find some really deep layers. Deeper than we knew before. Its shocking. And i if i tell you it will giveaway way the surprise. But we learn some real shocking things about his father and things that affected mom as a teenager and affected them as an adult. In terms of Mental Health and people coming to grips with whats happening with their family like Silver Linings playbook. So its something that youre touching on. Definitely. Marvins baby sistecomes out in the end of the play, and really takes us through in like five minutes a jourgey journey about her family. She says i was one day late in trying to get marvin help. This was important but particularly amongst black families, is this a message youre able to send out in the audience that its ok to get help . Yes. I think that dont talk about it much. When you see this show and then you experience that moment in the end when marvin gets killed and then when the lights go down theres a news clip then the lighteds come back up and you hear her say my brother needed help and my mother needed help and my you know you have to learn to reach out. How long does it take to cook the shrimpsome about one minute. Adding the white wine. Grits right here. Now, when you add the milk you can add more or less milk. The consistency you want.
