Its time for 11 fitness and here from the maryland athletic club, good morning. Thank you for having me. Youre going to talk about how to get the most out of your Strength Training workout. Three things you need to remember when coming up with your resistance training workout is muscles is what burns calories so a lot of people think they have to start with cardio but they are not maintaining muscles which burn calories. How many days a week should you lift . In the beginning two times a week is plenty then the split is important. So what are you doing those two days . A lot of people think upper body one day and lower body the next. In reality you end to lose muscle after 72 hours of training so if youre just hitting the muscle twice a week youre not maximizing. So the best is to do a full body resistance training workout both days until youre ready for the third day a week to throw that in there. These are things you can do in the gym or at home. Exactly. So all you really need is a chair and some lighter dumbbells to get started. This is a very beginner workout. First we have eightpound dumbbells. Start with threepound or fivepound dumbbells. If eight is intimidating, start out with three or five but its important to increase your weight. So a fullbody. Going to be a squat and press. Youre using all the muscles of the body. Into straight down. Come up and press. Come straight down. Up and press. How many should you do . Start with 1215 and if last three to four repetitions should be difficult. If you made it through 1215, and it was easy, you need to increase your weight a little bit. And at that pace . Yes. This looks easy then when you go to do it, its a lot more difficult. Make sure youre not using a chair that rolls. This is a singleleg squat. Start with four feet hiplength apart. Start with the seated position and stand up with one. Ly start with my left. If you need help, you can put that right toe on the ground. You dont want to use the other leg or swing around. So if you can, dont use it at all. Just stand up and sit down and youre not throwing yourself back in the schaefer. Back in the chair. 15 in a row. You can do this in your office. Thats oneleg. Glutes, quads, a lot of balance and core. Thats going to hit your lower body. Our next. Pushup. Quite a few options. I would have everybody start from the knees, hands directly below the shoulders, elbows pointing back as low as you can go comfortable. We dont want to see this. Straight lines knees to the shoulders. Push up. Come back up. How many . 1215 as well. Some people when they first start pushups cant do 12 or 15 in a row. So if you have to do three then do four more, thats good. I will do the chair exercises soon. Stay with us. More news is coming up ne my asthmas under control. I dont miss out. You sat out most of our game yesterday asthma doesnt affect my job. You were out sick last week. My asthma doesnt bother my family. You coughed all through our date night i hardly use my rescue inhaler at all. What did you say . How about every day . Coping with asthma isnt controlling it. Test your level of control at asthma. Com, then talk to your doctor. There may be more you could do for your asthma. Maryland enjoyed its first week in the top 25 in the randy edsel era. Sneaking in on the poll at number 25. So smooth. Looks like he barely breaks a sweat. Glides into the end zone. Gelman with a comfortable victory 426 over mount st. Jos. Game one alds at fenway park. Boston. Tampa bay. Things looked good early for tampa bay. Zobrist and indeed gone over the monster. Tampa with a 2run lead but it started to fall apart in the bottom of the fourth. Wil myers, last second. W459 world snapped he said he saw Desmond Jennings out of the corner of his eyes so therefore went and that opened the floodgates. Johnny gomes, looked like a home run. Tworun double off the monster. Boston biling it on from there tacking on 10 more as the red sox take game one 122. Thats a look at sports, im pete gilbert. Ill see you back here tonight at 6 00. Well, its october and if youre ready to get spooked you dont have to look far. The master of horror has roots near baltimore and you can dig a little deeper into his life with the opening of the Edgar Alan Poe house hope the weekend. On north amity street north of the beano Railroad Museum and hope to one of the oldest Public Housing communities. Many will also tell you homework should take this amount of time. 70 minutes a night or 10 minutes, so you should be able to get an idea from the teacher. Absolutely. Changes in attitudes and behaviors . A lot of times you will see that they are distracted and unfocused and they get that unwillingness to try. We have to Pay Attention to behaviors as symptoms and not the cause of the bigger issue. And family stress, how does that contribute . When youre spending fourfive hours a night it leads to more frustration for the parntsde then the child and its a cycle. Sometimes you need to take a step back and get some outside help. And i think theres always one parent thats better at it. And i think theres always i was not the patient one. You have to figure out which parent is best for helping out with the homework. Yes, family dynamic plays a part but at the end of the day they are still mom and dad so sometimes you need to take a step back. And Huntington Learning Center is a great place to look for that outside help. Yes. Dr. Kim hammond when we come back, with your pet questions. But first heres a look at whats going on around town. Little tucker. Welcome back. Joining us to answer your questions is dr. Kim hammond and tucker isnt just licking you because he is a friendly dog. He is your dog. I allow this dog. Hits just ooh good ole fur ball and this time of the morning, he is my guest. Stink tpwhugs force outside my house, is it going to hurt the dogs to eat them . No. Stink bugs are a real problem. They are a serious problem. And i think that im going to come up with a solution to stink bugs. We have to bring in next week. I actually have a product that i think works very well and ive been investigating it. First we do have some pet questions. I have a 4yearold doberman pincher and every time she poops, she turns around and eats it. I try giving her fecal medicine. What causes a dog to eat her sneeshes and my sisters dog does the same thing. First of all, let me address the discussion about if she is giving a product that doesnt work. If you read the directions on that product its really just msg believe it or not. You have to give it each time the dog eats so if you give a treat or snack youve got have that product and its got to be a full dose. The idea that it tastes pretty good coming in but doesnt afterwards so so it gives them a bad taste association . Yes. You would think it would be bad tasting enough but why do they do it . But the point is she may have the right product but not using it properly. So the other thing is this one thing about this. Suppose the dog has worms and is eating its own poop. The short answer to a short question is, physically, prevent your dog from eating its poop. You see it pooping. Take it away. Because dogs do that. Yes, you have to do that. But it is a real serious problem. Ok. I just got a new puppy and my guests my friend suggested i micro chip it. If you have a new animal, this may be the single most important thing you do besides vaccination. We have a lot of animals that have gotten lost. Mike chipping is a small tchape goes under skin and over the back and any dog or cat that runs away, wherever it goes, the pound or spca, they come home. If you dont have your animal mike chipped, get it mike rowe chipped. And its not very expensive . Yes, but losing your dog . Its like 20 40. I would get my dog micro chipped before i did anything else. It gags is healthy and and throws up after it eats. First make sure your animal is is not sick. Go to your veterinarian and get blod work, xray, physical exam but then eliminate vary i cant believes and sometimes the reats are bad so go on hills or science diet generally they will be fine. They are fairly common especially as people get older. Most of the time they can heal without the need for surgery. Judith gunnery was trying to corral her dog when she fell. I went flat on my back and i never knew such pain. I went to the emergency room and they told me i had a compression fracture of l1. This is an image of what a typical l1 fracture looks like. At first she was given pain medication and advised to rest but when her spine wouldnt heal she decided to try surgery. The doctor performed percu taniuos surgery. Its cement that stabilizes the fracture so theres no more micro movement of the bone. The doctor says in most cases surgery is not necessary. We can manage patients who suffer with conservative care but when conservative care fails and pain is overwhelming and debilitating to the patient, then this can be a good option assuming all the puzzle pieces fit and its the right clinical choice. The surgery was quick and she felt better right away. I could feel relief from it. It was probably instant really ,if i could say, because the bone was strong again. Thats one of the most graphing things with this procedure is often as soon as they emerge from anesthesia their back pain can be gone if not significantly improved. And dr. Maine joins us now with more information. Good morning. Good morning. Who typically has these kinds of fractures . The most common presentation is an elderly woman as you get older if you develop osteoporosis, the incidents can be quite common. Sometimes they are completely asymptom atic. Sometimes they result in hospital admissions and sometimes heamp breathing. So what can we do to prevent this . I think general maintenance of your health care, seeing your doctor, being educated on he causes of osteoporosis. We were talking about building bone early on. Thats why its so important for young girls to do exercise because it helps early on . Lightweights, all that is important for bone over the and to try decrease the zone of osteoporosis. But this is an option that people do have. Its an option for treatment. Its all about selecting the right patient and if they have severe pain and the x rays all meet up, you can often help them tremendously and it can be quite instainous. Thank you. The golf channel on nbc and the pga tour are proud to present live day three coverage of the 2013 president s cup. Early morning just outside columbus, ohio, in a competition which started back in 1994 and a competition which has been dominated by the United States winning seven of the first nine president s cup. First two days featured a couple of weather delays so theyre still finishing up with four of the six alternate shot matches which is the second session. Captain just momentarily getting together to pair up for the Third Session which will be another session of better balls. Weve got a full day of golf here for you on nbc sports with the u. S. Clinging to a slim lead. 4 1 2 to 3 1 2. We go out to the 16th where snedeker has a birdie putt to win the hole he and webb simpson one down to Angel Cabrera and marc leishman. Cabrera just lipped out his birdie attempt. Now this might go a little right. Pushed it, roger. Didnt come close. Rolled by it. That is not a good stroke. He knows how important that putt was. Snedeker through the years so good with that putter. Knows that he just got a little fired up for it, and that went well by for his partner wb s simps simpson. You can see hes ashen looking. He says i never miss those on perfect greens. Cabrera and leishman winning three holes on the second nine and one after the weather delay last night into this morning. Snedeker, this stroke are the two quickest on the course, thats for sure. Able to get that par and snedeker, you can see the look on his face. That was an opportunity to square it up. We go to 17 for the third at the par 4 for richard sterne, coming from the rough. A lot of green to work with. Trying to get a chuckup. Just soso from there. Sterne and grace two down to stricker. Meantime back there for leishman to par and half the hole and keep the oneup lead for him and cabrera. The u. S. Squandered a chance to square it up. Back over to the 17th. Third shot now the americans have a chance theer close it out again if they get it up and down, theyll close out grace and sterne. Sure will. They got a great break, strickers ball tore americans ball landed up against the collar but with the lift, clean and place in effect, steve was able to move that away from the primary rough of the first cut. So hes going to be able to get his putter on. And i think that really gives him a better chance. His putter will come up and over a pretty large brow that comes out of this back center part of this green. It will push it significantly too from his lift f left to right. Slow,
