he's attacking the front runner by a lot. he's are joke artist. >> donald trump has mocked everybody with personal attacks. if anyone deserves to be attacked that way, it's donald trump. >> you know that is florida, they hate little marco rubio so much. little more ka rubio 16, lying ted cruz, that's amazing no matter what you say with ted, he'll change it. >> today, gop candidates rally supporters in states with contests today and tuesday, and more of this. >> get him out. get him out of here. trouble maker. a real trouble maker. get that guy out of here, police. thank you, get him out. let's go, move! we got to get him out. >> we're not going anywhere. all day. this is the place for politics. >> even at this early hour, candidates are zigzagging across the country in what promises to be an exhaustive day for supporters in key states. voters in louisiana will be the first to have their say with polls open at 8:00 a.m. eastern, kansas is one of the states where donald trump and rival ted cruz are making their final pitches. trump will also be in florida where marco rubio is campaigning. john kasich is in michigan as are hillary clinton and bernie sanders, both getting ready for a debate in flint tomorrow. meanwhile the feud between trump and mitt romney is far from over. trump began his latest line of attack against the former republican nominee as trump protesters began shouting in that rally in new orleans. >> that guy is mocking. he has no idea how to win. he's upset. he's upset because when he sees this happening, he never had it that way with him. you take guys that are jealous and guys that have lost and guys that don't know how to win like a mitt romney is an example. he choked so badly. that was an election that was easy. that was an election that could have been won so easily. >> trump will be speaking in about an hour-and-a-half. has he not cancelled at the last minute? rubio, however, will be hitting it at 11:45. the other republican candidates addressed people yesterday, ben carson used his time to officially drop out of the race. >> you know, a lot of people love me. they just won't vote for me. it's okay. it's not a problem. you know, i will still be heavily involved in trying to save our nation. >> donald trump is skipping c-pac. i think somebody told him megyn kelly was going to be here, or even worse, he was told there were conservatives that will be here. >> you can't do it right. you can't have people in smoke filled rooms who are the establishment, be i the way, my only fear of a convention is that these kind of connected interests would dominate. >> whoever the nominee is of our pare, they will get the full backing and t100% support of ou party. >> we don't take side, no matter what you read. >> the odds of a contested convention are very small. >> msnbc is covering the cpac conference. good morning to you both. we go ladies first, start with you, jane, i know that you were inside the convention hall when news of donald trump's cancellation broke. i am curious about the reaction then and the stuff you are hearing this morning. >> reporter: i think people were disappointing. this isn't donald trump's crew. these are establishment conservatives, libertarian, younger conservatives involved with the moviement for a long time. donald trump supporters are newer to the gop at times. but i think peopleped to see him show his face and answer those questions. they might have been the sticking point if he didn't want to do the q & a format that everybody else does when they come here. as for the buzz this morning, well, when the first speaker cancelled. i think a lot of people slept in. it's quiet. >> it looks empty. except for you. cpac officials have announced trump's choice sends a clear message to conservatives. do you think he is in trouble with conservatives and all that conspired this week played a role in his decision to back out? >> i think he could be in trouble. he is certainly in trouble with conservatives in washington. few look at last year's speech, he went to cpac. he got a luke warm reception. i think it could have been quite controversial. maybe he was going to get sol challenging questions, newt gingrich said it was a wise decision for him to skip cpac. nomplally, of course, no one would skip cpac if you want to be president of the united states on the republican side. this year is very different. >> hopefully, minnesota, jane, cpac wraps up today. is there a sense from the convention-goers the state of the gop race given all we saw from mitt romney's 68thing remarks ability donald trump to the behavior that we saw to the debate? >> reporter: you know, there are two sides of him. here i think a lot of people enjoy what they tell me is a vacation from the election. they get to sit down and talk about the nitty-gritty policy and these tend to be policy nerds who want to spent spend three days talking about building the inner workings of the government. there is a sense they want the resolved and they want someone to win. they may not want it to be donald trump. we saw his name get booed a couple times yesterday. they want someone to win. there is talk of this brokerage convention idea. the top activists in the country, it's not clear how that will work for them. ted cruz made a compelling argument to a very intent crowd yesterday. a very happy receptive crowd that people who want not to be the nominee to be donald trump, but they want someone to win, they should vote for him. >> so, bob, mitt romney thinks if kasich wins ohio, they will knock the wind out of trump. few look at a hypothetical, if this happens, trump holds the delegate lead. he needs to win 66% of remaining delegates to get to that magic number of 1237. that can be a hard climb. so what is your outlook on the path for anyone but rump? >> well, i think it's difficult an even romney has acknowledged that trump is the likely nominee and that's why he's stepped up and gave that big speech. there is no doubt about it. if trump keeps winning. if he win, i think either one of ohio or florida, winner take all. >> that is going to be a significant step to the nomination. he is not there yet, alex, but at the same time everything is falling perfectly for donald trump. if this were a two-man race, maybe that would change the dynamics significantly. trump has been winning for months, until it changes, he's going to get the delegate seats he needs. >> with all the talk about taking down trump, you heard a minute ago, they were saying the rnc will back whomever the nominee is, adding the chance like you are saying the broker convention could be pretty small. doong we should see more attempts like mitt romney to try to stop trump? could it work or is it too late? >> reporter: i think it's late in the game. we haven't seen others step up and give that type of speech. are we going to see that over the next week or two? i don't know, i think it depends on the results today and going forward. but it is late in the game and i think the post-script t. history will show, if trump gets the nomination, republicans waited too long and thought, well, he's going to implode. he hasn't imploded. >> jane, real quick. 11:35, marco rubio, do you know when we expect to hear from him? >> reporter: we will see how strong the movement supports him. i'm looking to see how strong his tournout is here. will you see him get pressed in a brokered convention t. moderator is here. cpac has been pushing the candidates to get on the record. what do you think about that? >> strong poll predictions, jane, are you hearing anything? >> you know, after yesterday, i'd say it's going to be ted cruz, you know, time will tell. we will have to see how they vote. >> yes, a few hours until that hams. jane, bob, today to see you both, thank you so much. as we said, donald trump will be holding a rally, a last minute one in wichita, kansas, it comes an hour or so before the state caucuses begin. then he heads to orlando and msnbc's jacob rascone is there for us. good morning. any effort there, any sign of slowing trump momentum? that effort is it working? >> reporter: the reality is, no, not at all, that even in all the states that have a poll out, donald trump is leading by double digits, except in ohio, where he's still leading if kansas where he is also leading. he's a favorite to win everywhere. we won't really know, of course, until voters make tear decision. some are looking at recent shifts in decision and policies and asking who is the real donald trump? donald trump is playing by his own rules again, skipping the conservative cpac conference for a last-minute rally in kansas where the latest poll shows ted cruz catching up. this after a stunning weekend in america politics of virtual civil war within the republican party. each former nominee mitt romney slamming the front runner and refusing to vote for him. >> i'm going to do everything within the normal political bounds to make sure that we don't nominate donald trump. >> reporter: the latest complaint trump's repeated flip-flops on immigration. suddenly arguing that the highly skilled foreign workers should be able to stay. >> i'm changing him i'm changing. we need highly skilled people in this country. >> reporter: then releasing a statement, switching back and on torture. >> if i say do it, they're going to do it. >> reporter: trump now telling the "wall street journal" he will not order a military officer to disobey the law. now ten days and 13 states before the billionaire business mogul could be unbeatable. or a contested convention could be all but inevitable. once again it's up to voters still flocking to trump rallies in record number, followed closely by scores of protesters and despite a week of unprecedented insults. >> he referred to my hand, if they're small, something else must be small. i guarantee you, there is no problem. >> reporter: and party divide his opponents pledged they would support the eventual nominee. even if it was trump. >> i'll support the republican nominee. >> yes. because i gave my word that i would. >> i will support whoever is the republican nominee for president. >> reporter: that, of course, was a big blow to the never trump movement, even those on stage with him saying they would support him if he was the nominee. worth noting there haven't been many polls out since this civil war in the republican party this week. we will see what happens on decision day today and again tomorrow and next tuesday. >> how right you are. thank you, jacob. well, the democratic candidates and the nation's industrial heartland this week, hillary clinton and bernie sanders address workers intrigue. the two will debate in flint, michigan tomorrow, kristen welker is if detroit. kristen, as always, good morning to you, my friend. how are these two candidates looking to make inroads with the nation's workers? >> reporter: well, alex, first of all, senator sanders hoping to gain some momentum with these races today. his aides tell me the states vote today, in the coming weeks they say are more favorable to him. secretary clinton downplaying expectations. they think they could have a very strong showing in kansas. they say nebraska is going to be a little bit closer. those are two states you have a number of white working class voters who tend to favor senator sanders. secretary clinton looking very advantage in louisiana. >> that could become a part of her southern firewall. meanwhile, secretary clinton getting pressed again on that e-mail issue after they struck an immunity deal with the fbi. he told investigators, though, that her server was never hacked. here's what secretary clinton told cnbc's john harwood. take a listen. >> this is the same security review that has been going on since last spring. i'm happy that everybody now has been cooperating and giving information. because i think that will finally end this and show that only appropriate steps were taken. >> reporter: alex, in terms of courting voters here, in the nation's heartland, senator sanders has been really aggressively attackinging is clinton on trade issues for supporting past trade deals like nanta. take a listen to what he had to say yesterday. >> she has supported nanta. i oppose nafta. she supported permanent trade relations with china. i vigorously oppose china. ve supported trade relations with vietnam. i opposed that. she supported the colombia free trade agreement. i opposed that. and she supported the korean free trade agreement. i oppose. that. >> reporter: secretary clinton pushing back hard against that criticism yesterday saying she would only support a trade deal that favors american workers and increases growth. she also called on senator sanders an gop front runner donald trump to release credible economic plans. it's all a preview of what we will see tomorrow night in flint, michigan, when these two face off in a debate. >> kristen, thank you very much. thank you for being outside in pretty dreary weather in detroit. >> anything for you. >> thank you. coming up, could the republican establishment face backlash from rank and file voters following mitt romney's speech against trump. how the effort to squash trump could backfire next. >> i'm encouraged on what's going on in the republican party. so we'll see what's pulling out here t. lead horse can lead all of them when they speak. because i don't trust any of them. designing cars for crash survival, subaru has developed our most revolutionary feature yet. a car that can see trouble hey how's it going, hotcakes? please, there is nothing short of trump shooting my daughter in the street and my grandchildren, nobody is going to persuade me from voting for trump. rick, do you think the party is losing control of its members and what does that mean going forward even looking past november? >> well, one thing is clear, after super tuesday, is the establishment has lost, they don't have a front rung establishment candidate. we had that with bob deal. we had that with john mccain, we had that with mitt romney. the conservatives in the party don't trust the establishment because they keep saying just if you conservatives help us win majorities. we won one in the house and subsequently one in the senate. will you get all you want. they delivered nothing. in fact, they believe and the republican aides are probably rye the republican party was better off with harry reid and nancy pelosi in charge of the house and the senate, there was no conservative difference over the conservatives. now they say if you give us the white house, everything will be okay. to bring mitt romney back when he wasn't there to endorse a candidate raised a lot of suspicion. it looked as if romney was positioning himself for some sort of brokered convention. this is exactly what the rank and file is all very suspicious about. so i don't think it helped at all that romney would come out and be critical of donald trump. i appreciate what he said, but the way he did it and who it is is problematic for the party. >> what do you think about romney? >> look i campaigned hard against romney. i was a conserve tiver for newt gingrich. romney did not have the deeds. he didn't have the record. similar to donald trump. donald trump does not have a conservative record. he, in fact, has supported almost everything 180 degrees at a phase of what he says now, so if you look at tarp, bailout, foreign policy, you look at he says i was against the war in iraq. he was for the war in iraq. when you look at tax policy, when you look at national health care, i hate obamacare. yet he talked about having a single payer system in the past. he's been pro abortion, pro gay marriage. all these things are 180 degrees out of phase. so he is really no different. i understand why the party doesn't trust the politicians for the reasons that i have described. >> you are saying mitt romney is not the spokesperson to knock trump? >> no, i think he isn't. having mitt romney saying he should release his taxes. he should, mitt romney is not person to call on releasing taxes. romney released his taxes, we found out he doesn't pay taxes. he was the one with the 47% comment which basically said i don't care about 47% of the party. also, after he won the florida primary the morning after he had his famous quote of i don't worry about the poor. so these were all missteps that happened in the last go around and to have him come out and sort of be the battery ram for trump was not very useful. >> okay. rick tyler. >> thanks, alex. >> appreciate it. in a moment, an abrupt segue, back to the mid-90s, we are learning about the type of knife found on the land where o.j. simpson once lived. you really want to go. with the united mileageplus explorer card, you'll get a free checked bag, two united club passes, priority boarding, and 30,000 bonus miles. everything you need for an unforgettable vacation. the united mileageplus explorer card. imagine where it will take you. ... 83% try to eat healthy. yet up 90% fall short in getting key nutrients from food alone. let's do more. add one a day women's gummies. complete with key nutrients we may need... ...plus it supports bone health with calcium and vitamin d. one a day vitacraves gummies. so strap yourselves in for action flo! small business edition. oh, no! i'm up to my neck in operating costs! i'll save the day! for plumbers and bakers and scapers of lawn, she's got insurance savvy you can count on. you chipped my birdbath! now you're gonna pay! not so fast! i cover more than just cars and trucks. ♪ action flo did somebody say "insurance"? >> reporter: hey, good morning t. bizarre thing about this latest wrinkle is this retired police officer who first received this knife. he gets the knife and holds onto it for several years, leading a lot of people to wonder why. i spoke to his attorney who explains why and says his client tried to do the right thing. >> reporter: it's back, all the drama from the o.j. simpson saga. >> if it doesn't fit, you must acquit. >> reporter: the case already back in pop culture the new ten-part fx mini series is getting big ratings. >> we need to bring in johnnie cochran and we need to do it now. >> now, once again, the story, real life headlines testimony tale of a knife, found years ago on the land where simpson once lived. >> so it has been submitted to our lab. they are going to study it. >> reporter: law enforcement tell mbc news it is described as a small utility-style knives commonly used in construction or landscaping a. knife they say is not consistent with the weapon used in the 1994 murders of nicole brown and ron goldman. but police are looking into it. >> this is a double homicide that is still opened and ongoing. >> los angeles police say now one of tear retired officers got a five from a construction worker on simpson's former property. while working off duty at a movie shoot across the street t. officer's attorney fred copeland says his client did the right thing. >> he did what i think every person would have done under the circumstances is, that's you call lapd. you let them make the call t. call was, look, this doesn't have any value to us. it's not useful. >> reporter: retired detective to him lang that worked on the original murder case doesn't buy it. >> why would someone sit on a knife, especially a cop that should know better. >> that's fewer fantasy. i'd rather be talking about the easter bunny instead. >> reporter: and in a statement, doubt from the family of ron goldman saying, in part, quote the validity of the knife as it relates to ron and nicole's murder is purely speculative. so even if there is a link between this knife and the known 94 murders, it is unlikely o.j. simpson will be tried because of the double jeopardy protections in this country. yet, investigators continue to do their work. >> they, do indeed. interesting timing on this development, everyone. be sure to watch the "dateline" special the people versus o.j. simpson, what the jury never heard. it starts at 9:00 p.m. eastern on sunday. it's a broker convention not only possible becoming more and more likely? >> well, he has closed the gap in michigan. he is looking for, he had a great debate on thursday in detroit. he will be campaigning in ohio. he said ohio is key to his path to the nomination. let's step back a second. what john kasich is running on is bringing america towing. if you are sick of the gridlock, the hit down the have itvitriol washington. john kasich is a new face, a fresh start. the more people hear john kasich the more they like him. >> please, be honest, hoo es the only one on the state who shows himself to be an adult many times over. that said, did the governor in an interview at cpac yesterday was asked if the republicans are headed for a brokered convention. here's what he said. take a listen. >> i will win ohio. i have to win 68% of the roets. >> it's a big climb. >> that's not going to happen. neither is marco going to win 60 and adoubt donald will get enough votes, delegates. so it's likely we will head to a convention. >> so does the candidacy think he could come out as the nominee and would that be a fair outcome? doesn't that then disenfranchise voters? >> what it all comes down to who's the best person to take on hillary clinton in november. john kasich again beats herbie about 11 points. he's running about uniting america, moving the country forward. i think the voters will tire of all the mudslinging and the name calling and all this other stuff. >> you know, trent, aren't the voters the ones to decide that, whatever they tired of? >> they absolutely are. they will have a chance to do that over the coming weeks and month. ohio is a bellwhether state. it always picks the right presidential candidate for the country in terms of the republican nominee and that's what it comes down to so the voters will have a chance to speak t. convention will play this stuff out. >> let's look at senator ted cruz. he's had a different take on the odds of this going to the donevention. i want to take a look at what he said. >> in my view, a brokered convention ain't going to happen and if the washington deal-makers try to steal the nomination from the people, i think it would be a disaster. it would cause a revolt. >> does he have a point there? could it be destructive to the party as a whole, trent? >> i think that's his opinion. i think we need to bring the party together. >> that itself what john kasich wants to do. the we can't bring our party together, we will never bring our country towing. john kasich has a two-step plan to do that, winning ohio, defeating trump, keeping him under that 1237 that he would need and starting to convipgs the american people we do best when we're towing, we feed a fresh start in washington a. man who has experience bringing people toe, working across party lines. that's what he seeks to do. >> the obvious at thursday night debate, there was a strong anti-trump sentiment. wasn't that undermined at the end of that debate when all the candidates, including your, pledged to sport whomever the gop candidate turns out to be? >> well, john kasich wasn't attacking donald trump. he wasn't engaged in the name calling. you said he was the only adult in the room. he has the leadership potential. we do need to bring the country towing. we need to bring the party towing. that's what john kasich seeks to do. we got to move past this gridlock and all this mess in washington and heal america and move forward towing. >> okay. trent duffy, we will be talking again. thank you. >> thank you, alex. donald trump claims he is bringing in millions of new voters. so who exactly are they and will that make a difference? >> reporter: well, of course, we have at love oem peejssterred to vote. >> that has a lot to do with how motivated you are. so i don't know how many new people have been brought into the party. clearly the people who are motivated to send a message to washington are the ones standing in line and showing up to vote on election morning in these primaries and clearly, donald trump has gotten their attention a. lot have shown up at the polls to vote for donald trump. >> if he is bringing these new voters into the party, do you think that's a today thing? because if he is the one inspiring folks to get in there and register to vote. yes, of course, everyone deserves to put tear voice in, have their voice heard, for the republicans, if they're reflecting donald trump, is it good for the party? >> reporter: well, the party, the system is as it is, it allows anyone to run for the president of the occupation, whether or not i would be effective would have to do with my message, what i was saying. the candidates who understand who is motivated to come to the polls to stand in line to send a message to washington are the ones having the most success. if you consider the fact that you got 6 million people in america working part time for economic reasons, those people are not happy. you got 27% of the unemployed, long-term unemployed. you got 53% of americans participating in the labor force. another 37% for whatever reason. these people are not happy. so few speak to their anger. if you speak to their issues and you offer a solution to them, you are likely to get their attention. these are the people the most motivated to get out and vote. i want to send out a message to washington, i don't like what's going on, i don't like my situation. i want them to hear me. >> given the unfavorables that donald trump has, are you worried that people would stay home from voting in the general election, the republicans, if donald trump is the nominee? >> it's not likely, people will be motivated one way or another to vote for the republican nominee if the nominee is donald trump. donald trump's challenge would be to work on winning back we'll angry about what he said earlier about mexicans and various other groups. he's got to work hard, if he is the nominee to bring those people back into the fold to soften his message so those folks don't feel motivated to show up to vote against him on election day. >> let's do this here, i want to play sound from trump's rally in maine, it was after mitt romney's attack speech. >> romney thinks bad about mr. trump. he must think that about every one of us supporters. we are not phony and fraud. we want america to be great again. >> any concerns on your part about the party losing touch with its own voters? >> reporter: no, i mean, not really. for some people, they might say that this is a market direction for the party. which is to say that you got to be where the voters are. and you got to understand what is important to the voters at the time. in this cycle, there are a lot of things important to the voters, but key among them would be the economy, along with terror and immigration and a host of other issues, but the economy is very important to a lot of americans. they're vogt their pocketbook. so if you speak to that, you have a good chance to get their attention and might be their vote. you got to understand where they're at and talk to them. that's not a party thing. that's important. >> that itself a candidate thing t. candidates who are out there right now who are already in the hunt for the nomination have to speak effectively to get the attention of the votes on election die. their ability will have everything to do with that. >> this week robert kagan argued in a pretty incredible argue here in the washington post that trump is the gop's franken stein, writing, quote, was it not the party's wild obstructionism, repeated threats to shut down the government, persistent calls for the stream court decision that taught republican voters the government is the political tradition party leadership and parties themselves for things to be over13, evaded, ignored, insulted, laffered at. how much does the party bear the responsibility for the rise of trump? >> reporter: well, i don't know if the party bears the responsibility for the rise of trump. the times bear the responsibility for the rise of somebody who will speak to the herding, how much the people are hurting. on their socialist, most americans, most democrats wouldn't consider a socialist, a 74-year-old socialist. but he's hitting home because he's talking about a rigged economy, he's talking to the condition of americans who are hurting. and anybody that does that in this cycle is going to do pretty well. so that's why donald trump is doing well. he's just talking to what hurts, what ails americans. >> if you say so, joe watkins. thank you very much, as always. donald trump threatened to ban all muslims from the country so why are some supporting him? >> well, it does seem sort of counter intuitive given that donald trump has advocated banning muslim, closing mosques. but the reasons that, you know, about 11% have said that they are vote for trump is -- are complicated and varied. there are some themes that i've seen. and one is that they have sort of a longstanding frustration with american foreign policy and the democratic candidates that they have tended to support in the past, they also care deeply about the economy and, finally, just like a lot of other trump supporters, they're frustrate with the status quo. and to them, they like the idea of someone like trump who says he's not beholden to special interests. >> so it's his lost on them, all the comments about banning muslim from entering the country, it seems. >> not lost on them. almost everyone i talked to said they definitely don't love his rhetoric but they don't actually believe that donald trump believes what he is saying. they say that he's just sort of doing this as a way to capture key votes right now, but that if he gets the nomination he will have to move sort of toward the center and if he gets elected he certainly wouldn't govern that way. so they sort of feel like it's the cost of doing business right now. >> well, there's something there, the cost of doing business. seems like by your articles and polls in here the economy for the registered republican muslims, that's the number one issue. >> yes. a recent poll suggested that about 38% of muslims said that economy was the most important issue. and islamaphobia was second place and trailing at 14%. they trail a lot about how the economy is doing. i think that they have a sense that maybe donald trump will enact some sort of pro-business policies that will shake things up in washington. >> very quickly. a poll in your article mentioned more than 2,000 muslim-americans who choose hillary clinton over any of the candidates running for president. why is that? >> well, i mean, i think -- ever since the 2000 elections when muslims overwhelmingly supported george w. bush, since then they have sort of taken a turn and have really gone hard for, you know, strong establishment democratic candidates. so that hasn't really changed. but now we're seeing, you know, a slight shift in that because they feel like they've been let down. >> okay. ismat, good to talk with you. thank you so much. coming up at the top of the next hour the first polls will be opening in louisiana. we're going to be there live and trump spokeswoman katrina pearson talks about the candidate's position to pull out cpac.ts big . with aches, chills, and fever, there's no such thing as a little flu. and it needs a big solution: an antiviral. so when the flu hits, call your doctor right away and up the ante with antiviral tamiflu. prescription tamiflu is an antiviral that attacks the flu virus at its source and helps stop it from spreading in the body. tamiflu is fda approved to treat the flu in people two weeks of age and older whose flu symptoms started within the last two days. before taking tamiflu, tell your doctor if you're pregnant, nursing, have serious health conditions, or take other medicines. if you develop an allergic reaction, a severe rash, or signs of unusual behavior, stop taking tamiflu and call your doctor immediately. children and adolescents in particular may be at an increased risk of seizures, confusion, or abnormal behavior. the most common side effects are mild to moderate nausea and vomiting. anti-flu?
