Which one of these candidates can beat donald trump, the winners and losers from the debate. The breaking news on the coronavirus, one american has now died. The latest word on that from china in a live report here in the united states. Record heat in one of the unlikeliest places on earth, the temperature hit 65 degrees. Details on why thats so concerning this morning. I know the ground hog said spring was coming early, thats a little ridiculous as we say good morning, im Kendis Gibson alongside Lindsey Reiser and corey kaufman. A u. S. Citizen is dead after contracting the coronavirus. This is the First American to die from the virus since the outbreak last month. Theres Little Details we know. Officials say its a 60yearold who was diagnosed with the virus in wuhan, china, just this past wednesday. 48 hours later, that person was dead. This now brings the death toll to 724 people at least whats reported so far. This is across the globe. There are 34,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. That number continues to climb. Joining us now from among congress is nbc news Foreign Correspondent molly hunter, what do we know about this u. S. Citizen. Reporter hey, guys, good morning, we dont know much more than what you said, the u. S. Embassy confirmed that one person, the First American death died in wuhan, again, guys, wuhan the epicenter of the outbreak, 11 million people, thousands of americans, hundreds we know have gotten out on american chartered flights. We know that several americans are still there. People are on social media for a variety of reasons. They have stayed behind. We dont know who exactly this person was, why he stayed behind. We know theres at least one other american in the hospital in wuhan. Im sure well find out more details in coming hours. In the meantime right there where you are in hong kong, as well as japan, there are some americans were told, and plenty of others who are stuck on a cruise ship. Any idea on their conditions on board . Kendis, thats right, thousands of people are under quarantine on two different cruise ships. Theres one crude ship in hong kong. The cruise ship is directly behind me. Its lit up, docked right here in the citys main harbor. There are 3,600 people on board. We dont believe there are any americans on board this cruise ship. They told us they are still in the process of testing all the crew, all the passengers and they say it will take another four days. No one can get off until the testing is complete. The dire case we have been talking about is the cruise ship off the coast of tokyo. 3,700 people are on board. At least 13 inflected americans. 64 total confirmed coronavirus cases. And guys, we have been reporting on this for the last couple of days. We have been talking to passengers, talking about the quarantine, what kind of being confined to their rooms has meant, and what was shocking today, what we learned today, and they have been telling us, Princess Cruises and Japanese Health department have been testing passengers. They have only tested 297 passengers. Of that a quarter has tested positive. We have no idea really how many people actually have coronavirus on that cruise ship. Very close quarters and right now theyre relying on passengers to selfreport their temperatures. They have passed out thermometers and one of the american women we spoke with just yesterday who is infected whos off to now a japanese hospital, she said she didnt have any symptoms. She didnt develop a temperature until two days after she tested positive with a throat swab. When you talked about those confined spaces, one of the Big Questions is there any concern that that could help spread the virus with that circulated air and that sort of thing . Reporter its one of the things everyone has been talking about, and one of the american passengers who we have been in contact with, gay quarter and her husband phillip, 75 and 77 from florida, they are concerned about the circulated air. We have been asking officials, asking authorities, asking airconditioning specialists about what that could mean. We dont know is the answer, and we dont know how that spreads but of course you guys, think about cruise ships, youre eating in the same canteen, the same activities, dancing, flying games, theres a lot of physical contact on a tight ship. 3,700 people on that ship right now. The other thing i wanted to add which i found so interesting, rebecca, the patient we spoke with, she has been told shes going to a japanese hospital for three days of treatment, without her husband. Her husband is still healthy. Shes left him on the trip, and then you guys, they say shes going back to the trip to finish out the quarantine until february 19th. What . Reporter so shes going to go get the treatment, if she improves, they told her shes going back to the ship. She has no idea why and shes pretty nervous about it. Wow. We are going to talk more with dr. Natalie azar coming up and detail out. I think this adds more questions to the fire here. Nbcs molly hunter for us. Thank you for the very latest. Now to the days other big breaking story, new reaction to President Trumps ousting of two key witnesses who testified against him in the impeachment inquiry. The move is making headlines above the fold on the front pages of Washington Post, New York Times and dallas morning news. The white house hinted in the last couple of days that some sort of payback might be coming. A bit of before and after here now for you. The president previewing his actions, the witnesses and then Nancy Pelosis reaction to the firing. Im not happy with them. Do you think im supposed to be happy with them. Such a shame. What a patriotic person. Clearly this goes too far. Reporter Nbcs Kelly Odonnell joins us live at the white house. Kelly, i think we can piece together what is behind all of this. Reporter one of the things that makes this challenging is the white house is not commenting and certainly the white house and allies would argue the president has the right to have Staff Members who support his policies and his administration. Colonel vindman is an active Duty Army Officer and he retains his position, so his employment remains secure but not his role here at the white house. He is being sent back to the army, the pentagon effectively, and his brother as well. His twin brother also a Lieutenant Colonel, and also an employee of the National Security counsel until yesterday. What this looks like is that the president and his team want to get rid of those who were a part of the impeachment process through testimony and who some of the characters who became well known to us that also includes Gordon Sondland who is a political appointee, who had been a donor to the trump campaign, and of course some of his testimony really stood out during the impeachment hearings. He was the ambassador to the european union. He was recalled late last night. His lawyer says he will be out of the administration so he will be out of a job. The president has said that he has been unhappy with vindman, he has raised him at a couple of different points over the last few months, and the press secretary indicated there would have to be people who pay, which set up the specter of pay back or revenge. The attorney said there was revenge here, that he was fired for telling the truth, and this is a case where the president has not commented. When he returned back, we asked him about this. We pest tered to say are there going to be additional firings, why did you remove vindman, he declined to comment and the National Security council has not commented but earlier in the day before this all blew up, the president was addressed by reporters on the south lawn and he gave us that hint that there would be something with Lieutenant Colonel vindman, although he was not explicit. Here is part of an extended q and a with the president. Mr. President , would you like to see Alexander Vindman that was a false report. I have a great relationship with mick. I have a great relationship with mark. And its false. Mr. President , would you like to see Alexander Vindman out of your white house . Well, im not happy with him. You think im supposed to be happy with him. Im not. Theyll make that decision. Youll hear theyll make a decision. Reporter when hes referring to theyll make a decision, hes referring to the National Security council, giving himself distance. He was asked about mick mulvaney, acting chief of staff, and mark short. They are not directly related to the issue of a so called purge after impeachment, but there have been other people who have been a part of the impeachment saga who have been witnesses. Some have chosen to leave Government Service on their own. There was a woman here who was tasked from the state department to the Vice President s office, jennifer williams, she asked to be reassigned. So it is a mix of those leaving on their own volition, asking to be moved and what appears to be an attempt to clean house from those who had a prominent role in the impeachment hearings. Now, the lawyer for Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman also points out he spoke publicly only once and under subpoena and that he followed orders as an active duty officer and that this was not something that he chose to do. This is something he felt compelled to do in his service to the country. Back to you. Kelly so many people saying this is just the beginning. Kelly odonnell at the white house. The daily news, by the way, with this striking cover here with the gop father kind of looking like the god father saying don takes care of Family Business in a friday night massacre and thats a term a lot of people are using, friday night massacre. Joining us now, msnbc military analyst, and a medal of honor recipient, and john haltwanger, political reporter for business insider, president wasting no time in engaging in what appears to be retaliation. To you accept that motive that Kelly Odonnell offered that the president has who he trusts to work in his administration. The people do serve at the president s pleasure. This is a defense that we have seen, allies of the president and republicans roll out in the, you know, the rapid pace that we have seen this news develop over the past 16 to 12 hours, you know, we have seen marco rubio say that, yes, this is president s white house, and he gets to pick who he wants to be around him. But vind mman, you know, as kel was saying is an active Duty Army Officer, all of the evidence suggests that he is a dutiful public servant, hes a decorated iraq war combat veteran, and he was the necs top ukraine expert, so it raises the question as to whether its good for National Security when the president dismisses people who seem to be good at their jobs over personal reasons rather than professional performance. Colonel, im curious to et get requestyour take on this, w heard about colonel vindman, purple heart recipient was escorted out of the white house doors. Well, it is no surprise to anybody. Indeed after his testimony, vindman started to clear out his desk, even before he was fired. He knew. Everybody knew. And certainly he did. Look, agencies lend people to other agencies in the government all the time, and when their time is up, when they finish their job, they go back to what they were doing before. Vindman was going to leave the white house in july in any case, but every executive gets to pick who he wants to have and who he doesnt want to have, but in very complicated Enterprises Like government, like combat, a good leader will surround himself with really smart people, even if, indeed, i would argue because they wont agree with them all the time, and to do otherwise carries, i think, unacceptable risks, especially when youre talking about National Security. Kendis. Hey, john, lets play off of what the colonel just talked about there with surrounding yourself with yes people in the room. If history is any indication, this is certainly not the last were going to hear, any indication of who else might be next . Thats a really good question. As kelly was saying earlier, some people have, you know, kind of left by their own volition already or asked to be reassigned. We know that we saw Marie Yovanovitch who was recalled as the u. S. Ambassador to ukraine retired from the state department recently. Some of the other witnesses that could be potentially targeted perhaps might be laura cooper at the pentagon who you might recall testified that there was evidence that ukraine was aware of the hold on roughly 400 million in military aid to ukraine on the day of trumps infamous phone call with ukraines president. Perhaps well see david holmes he is a top aide at the u. S. Embassy. We know he retaliates against real and perceived critics. 16 people you see on the screen there, which means the fallout is likely to continue. Colonel jack jacobs, an have you both in. Turning to president ial politics with the New Hampshire primary just a few days away it was friday night fight among the democrats. Seven candidates on the debate stage in manchester, New Hampshire, last night, and it was easy to see which ones were actually rising in the polls and those that are looking for a lifeline. Joe biden and senator Bernie Sanders swapped jabs over health care, both raising questions about how americans would pay for the plans. Bernie says, and he says he wrote the damn thing, but unwilling to show us what the damn thing is going to cost. How much is it going to cost, whos going to pay for it. It would cost more than the entire federal budget we spend now. More than the entire budget. The idea middle class taxes arent going to go up is just crazy. If we do what joe wants, well be spending some 50 trillion on health care over the next ten years. Thats the status quo, joe. Thats what health and Human Services says. But not in taxes. What weve got to do is understand, simple question, joe, we are spending twice as much per capita on health care than the people of any other country. Health care remained a big issue for Senators Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar, pointing to the importance of keeping the Affordable Care act. I think we need to think about health care a little differently, and that is 36 million Americans Last year couldnt afford to have a prescription filled and that includes people with health insurance. On day one, i will defend the Affordable Care act, and i will use marching orders to reduce the cost of commonly used drugs. The Affordable Care act is now nearly 10 point more popular than the president of the united states, so why would we talk about blowing it up. What we need to do is build on it, Mental Health care, addiction, longterm care, those are the things that would make it better. Recent front runner Pete Buttigieg took several hits from the other candidates, attacking him on his experience, record with black voters and his campaign donors. Unlike some of the folks up here, i dont have 40 billionaires, pete, contributing to my campaign coming from the pharmaceutical industry, coming from wall street, and all the big money interests. Hes a mayor of a small city who has done some good things but has not demonstrated he has the ability and well soon find out to get a broad scope of support across the spectrum. Is that a substantial answer from mayor boouttigieg. No. You have to own up to the facts. As you were campaigning through iowa as three of us were jurors in that impeachment hearing, you said it was exhausting to watch and that you wanted to turn the channel and watch cartoons. We have a newcomer in the white house and look where it got us. Despite all of this, looking toward the general election, the most sweeping theme throughout the night was beating President Trump, and uniting the country around democrats. Whats wrong with cartoons. The question is who can go toe to toe with mr. Trump, who can take down mr. Trump because hes the real threat to the country. Donald trump is not the cause of all of our problems and we are making a mistake when we act like he is. Thats right. He is a symptom of a disease that has been building up in our communities for years and decades. We bring our party together. Its an issue we can all agree on, and fight to end the corruption. Were the democrats, we should be the party on the side of hard working people. And we can bring in independents and republicans on that. If we want to beat this president , weve got to be ready to move on from the play book that we have relied on in the past, and unify this country around a new and better vision. Thats how were going to win. It was definitely fight night, and maybe he was referring to adult swim on Comedy Central when he was talking cartoons. Every candidate on the New Hampshire ballot is campaigning in the granite state, while Michael Bloomberg is the lone star there in the south in alabama. A new nbc poll, by the way, puts Bernie Sanders in the lead three days out with 24 , ahead of Pete Buttigieg at 21 . The next one up if youre listening on the radio, Elizabeth Warren at 14 and joe biden at 13 . Joining us now from New Hampshire, nbc campaign priscilla thompson, and nbc news report reporter dasha burns. How did the candidates assess their own performances after last nights debate . Reporter good morning. I think it was an important thing to note that the nbc news maris poll came out a few hours before the debate, cementing the front runner status for sanders and buttigieg which was pretty evident on that debate stage, both taking a lot of heat. Buttigieg especially taking a lot of punches and punching back at times. Joe biden really fought to get back into the fray. He had that big moment where he asked for a standing ovation for Lieutenant Colonel vindman, and Amy Klobuchar really took the spotlight. She broke out but well see if that actually does enough to get her out from under those low poll numbers. One candidate, though, who was noticeably less dominant than we have seen her particularly on that debate stage, Elizabeth Warren, and take a listen to how she reviewed her performance last night. So every time i go out to talk about, especially on the debate stage with that, with lot of people tuned in, i leave it thinking, i wanted to do a good job for you. For all of the people whose lives who could be touched by though plans and i just didnt say enough, didnt fight hard enough, didnt tell you how bad i want this, and how good we could make it if we just come together. Reporter and well see what that means for her here in New Hampshire come tuesday. Of course she is from the neighboring state of massachusetts, and in the meantime, during the debate, mayor Pete Buttigieg faced a lot of attacks as we saw in the mash up from the other contenders, including this one from senator klobuchar. Take a listen. But what you said, pete, as you were campaigning through iowa as three of us were jurors in that impeachment hearing, you said it was exhausting to watch, and that you wanted to turn the channel and watch cartoons. It is easy to go after washington because thats a popular thing to do. It is much harder, as i see senator sheheen in the front row, such a leader, it is much harder to lead and much harder to take those difficult positions because i think this going after every single thing that people do because its popular to say and makes you look like a cool newcomer, i dont think thats what people want right now. We have a newcomer in the white house, and look where it got us. I think having some experience is a good thing. It has been broughten. So despite those attacks, how is the campaign feeling about how its done, at least in the last 24 hours, priscilla . Yeah, good morning, kendis, lots of fireworks on that debate stage last night, but the Buttigieg Campaign is one that has always contended that they have a candidate who can take a punch, respond to it and keep moving. I think thats something that we have seen in past debates whenever he was challenged about his fundraising strategy and the wine caves and so even with yesterdays attacks and criticism or questions about his experience and his ability to build a diverse base of support but none of those attacks have seemed to stick. At least in the minds of voters. We saw in iowa him coming out on top there, and it will remain to be seen what will happen in New Hampshire when folks head to the polls next week. Bernie sanders obviously fighting it out with Pete Buttigieg but biden still trying to stay in there. He has changed up his lineup from iowa, well see how he does in New Hampshire. The tohe took a day off in n hampshire. Thanks to both of you. As we look at that mash up and the debate from last night, how are they all going to be able to come together come july on the Convention Floor and be supportive of one of those candidates. Andrew yang resonated with voters, were all making it sound like donald trump is the common enemy, and really the source of all of ours problems with this has been building for quite some time. Later this morning, joy reid is live in New Hampshire, the head of the States Democratic Party will be among her guests. Thats today on a. M. Joy at 10 eastern. And finally the ntsb has ruled out engine failure as a cause for this Helicopter Crash that killed kobe bryant, his daughter, and seven others. One witness said that the helicopter was quote surrounded by mist seconds before it slammed into a hillside in california. We want to also note that a memorial for bryant and his daughter gianna will be held february 24th. That will be, guys, at the Staples Center in los angeles, and the date is specific because the number 2 is giannas jersey number, and of course 24 for kobe bryant. All those memorial items at Staples Center gathered to be given to his family, 1353 basketballs, 25,000 candles, 5,000 letters just among the items donated. They have done clean up work in the last couple of weeks getting those away from the Staples Center. Lets go back to breaking news were following this morning, coronavirus outbreak, an american in china becomes the first person to die from the mysterious virus, the First American. The number of confirmed cases is on the rise right here in the u. S. There are 12 confirmed cases across six states, california, arizona, wisconsin. Msnbc medical contributor, dr. Natalie azar is with us right now. What is best way to protect yourself from the virus. We see people wearing masks, should everyone buy one . No, thats not the recommendation and that has been reinforced by the cdc and world health organization. The masks that you can buy on amazon or in the store are not sufficient to inhibit the virus from getting through the mask the ones, the kinds of masks that Health Care Workers are wearing are very very different. They are fitted respirator masks, eye shields, gowns, gloves, the recommendation for the average american, again s just to be vigilant about symptoms, hand washing and the biggest thing in the history is exposure, so if youve been exposed to someone, either with the virus or has recently traveled to the epicenter, that would be a little bit more alarming and in that case, reach out to your health care provider. For the average person, the masks are not sufficient, you know, to disallow transmission of the virus. And doctor, i know a lot of people are comparing this to sars but is it more similar to the seasonal flu virus than sars. What we know right now, and by the way, this is a very fluid situation. I just this morning was listening to a podcast with dr. Fauchi, just so informative. We have been thinking it was roughly behaving the same way as sars in terms of transmissability, that is shifting to the idea, its probably that more people are being infected than we previously thought. The fatality is very different. Sars fatality was roughly 10 . The case fatality rate right now for this coronavirus is 2 , while the case fatality rate for influenza is 0. 1 . A significant difference there, and you know, those numbers mean a lot. If you have a virus thats very very contagious and infects a large number of people but the fatality is low, then were dealing with maybe this coronavirus situation will just end up being like a very bad flu situation. If on the other hand we find out that the case fatality is higher than seasonal flu and that number is actually valid, the 2 , then were dealing with a much more serious, you know, global pandemic. Doctor, the department of health is setting up quarantine sites around the u. S. Should people be worried at all if one pops up near them . No, i wouldnt be at all. Remember now, these quarantine sites, most of what were doing here in the u. S. Is out of a tremendous abundance of caution. Everyone who has been evacuated from china, even who are not exhibiti exhibiting symptoms are being quarantined. Some of the most interesting news over the last 24 hours is we have been reporting that the incubation period is roughly 2 to 14 days based on knowledge of the way other coronavirus behave, now thinking its closer to 2 to 5 to 6 days, and the question whether or not asymptomatic transmission can occur is a big big question that we, you know, last week were reporting, well, you know, theres a report from out of germany that there was asymptomatic transmission. Now were not so sure how efficient that is. I think people need to be reminded that, you know, asymptomatic transmission is not the biggest driver of epidemics, for folks in the u. S. The bigger concern should be influenza, not the coronavirus, but remain vigilant, and remain informed. And molly hunter did tell us that there was a passenger on a crude ship docked outside tokyo that didnt feel symptoms until two days after she tested positive for coronavirus. Thank you for that expertise. Absolutely. And some other information, there was a big case series that was reported yesterday in jama that gave us a lot, Health Care Providers a lot more information about the way the virus behaves that patients can go from having mild symptoms to five days later short of breath and a few days later respiratory distress and respiratory failure. What that means is even if youre exhibiting mild symptoms in the beginning, you would need to be monitored carefully for the next week at least to make sure it doesnt evolve into a more seniorious illness. Dr. Natalie azar, thank you for your time. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with a scathing assessment of not the president but other key figures in the impeachment saga. We are back with this mornings must read editorials, house Speaker Nancy Pelosi writes in the Washington Post quote mcconnell and the gop senate are accomplices to trumps wrong doing. Speaker pelosi goes on to write sadly because of the republican senates betrayal of the constitution, the president remains an ongoing threat to american democracy. He continues to assist that he is above account ability and he can corrupt the elections again. This from Sherrod Brown writing in private, republicans admit they acquitted out of fear, and for the state office senators fear is the motivator, theyre afraid mr. Trump might give them a nickname like low energy jeb or lying ted or tweet about their disloyalty or worst of all he might come to their state to campaign against them in the republican primary. A lot of people were hoping that Sherrod Brown would run for the president ial primary but he decided not to do so. One for editorial for you this morning, Washington Post mark thesen who says that democrats threw everything that they had at trump. Hes Still Standing. Joining us now is morgan a White House Reporter with the hill. Good morning, and i was watching bill maher last night, and he was joking, if you see him on 5th avenue on the street with a gun, just walk the other way because hes Still Standing and exacting revenge on perceived enemies, where do his opponents go from here . Well, i think you saw in that nancy pelosi oped, you know, what democrats are going to be doing, and we knew all along that trump would be acquitted in the Senate Impeachment trial because of his control over the gop. Democrats need to make the case to the public, this is all about public opinion, and you know, convincing them that the trial was rigged as we have heard this message, you know, before even nancy pelosi transmitted the impeachment articles that the trial in the senate was going to be unfair. Theyre going to continue to have that message and pelosi in her oped also accusing the republicans of being accomplices, and i think were going to hear more and more of that. The backdrop has always been the fact that this is an election year. And i think its important for democrats to make that case to the public that they, you know, believe trump is unfit for office. And President Trump attacking senator joe manchin on twitter for his impeachment vote. He is a democrat that frequently breaks with his party, but morgan, based on senator browns oped is this a look at what republicans feared could happen to them if they voted to convict . Well, i think the big question is, you know, the big problem i think for democrats at least in the house was that, you know, trump was able to make the case that the republicans were unified against impeachment and that there were a few democrats that broke off. Of course, van drew who famously switched parties and voted against impeachment, but it was actually reversed in the senate with one republican, mitt romney moving over with the democrats and voting, you know, in favor of removing trump from office for the allegations of abuse of power, and i think that, you know, what Sherrod Brown is getting at is that privately republicans are expressing dismay over this. We did see some senators say that they were described trumps behavior as inappropriate but a lot of them are saying, you know, its up to the voters at this point, so i think that, you know, well see how it plays out. If more information comes out about what happened with regards to ukraine, there could be more drops, and there could be more statements from republicans about the president s behavior. And Susan Collins among those getting a lot of heat for saying that he has learned his lesson. Morgan, the White House Reporter at the hill, thank you. Were going to get to whats trending now, guys, Oprah Winfrey became emotional on the today show when she talked about backlash against her best friend, gayle king. The last 24 hours of your best friend have been difficult after that interview with lisa leslie about kobe. I wonder how shes doing. She is not doing well. May i say, she is not doing well. Because she has now Death Threats and has to now travel with security. And shes feeling very much attacked. The fallout after king asked kobe bryants friend, lisa leslie about a 2003 Sexual Assault case against him. King faulted cbs for promoting the most salacious part of her interview and taking it out of context. The charges against bryant were dismissed. And then theres the u. S. Womens soccer team, they absolutely crushed it against mexico, qualifying for the 2020 tokyo olympics, the 40 victory means that the u. S. Team will now go to their 7th straight olympic games, and here is something amazing, guys, the u. S. Womens team is undefeated on american soil, 43 straight matches in a row. I get chilled whenever i see those final goals and the celebration. We have to figure out the equal pay thing for these talking about the elephant in the room. These young women. Everyday progress new reaction this saturday morning to President Trumps planned outreach to black voters. Heres how he made the pitch in charlotte, north carolina. Africanamerican youth unemployment has reached its lowest level ever recorded. Africanamerican poverty has plummeted to the lowest rate ever recorded, the best numbers weve ever had. Remember, i used to say what do you have to lose . Nbcs janelle ross reports many black voters believe trumps outreach is more showmanship than substance. We wanted to bring janelle in, she joins us a writer with nbc blk, good morning to you. Good morning. I wanted to jump in here, when the president mentions low unemployment numbers, specific stacks, does that paint an accurate picture of how well African Americans are doing under trumps economy. Yes and no. Obviously unemployment is an important critical measure of individual economic well being, larger nationwide well being, certainly. And it is certainly true that black unemployment is at a historic low. What it probably doesnt tell us is enough about Household Level wealth and sort of security. It doesnt immediately tell us anything about wages and it certainly doesnt tell us enough about how long this pattern has been in place when it began, all of which actually began during the last administration, so its certainly true that black unemployment is at a historic low. Theres just perhaps a broader, longer story to be told. Exit polls showed President Trump got 13 of the male africanamerican vote in 2016, is he betting on growing that this time around . Certainly. There are certainly many reports that donald trump is hoping as do most republicans to secure a larger share of the black vote, along with other along with minority voters. There is, i think, a longstanding theory that republicans that can secure about 20 of the black vote could go a long way toward securing the white house. That would mean winning in some significant portions of some major cities, which is not something that republicans certainly in recent history have had a lot of success doing. But it is true that donald trump won about 13 of the black male vote, which is more than the previous republican nominee. I cant help but take a look at the contrasts between hearing the president talk about black voters and africanamericans and he talks about employment. And wealth. And then watching the debate last night, among democrats, and the only time that africanamericans came up, it was talking about criminal justice reform. So can he get some traction there by talking about this stuff . I think that there are two questions here. One is, certainly, there are republicans who are also black. Be they africanamerican or blackamericans of different ethnicities. And certainly, some of those people are going to be trump voters. They were trump voters in 2016 and they may be trump voters in 2020. The question is whether he can attract new voters or pull in people who either didnt participate in 2016. Or who voted for the democrat in 2016. And that seems far less likely, given that his Approval Ratings are are are remarkably low. Among black voters, they are among the lowest and they really are historically low among president s. Especially, among young, black women. Nbcs janelle ross for us this morning. Thank you so much, janelle. Sounding the alarm as antarcticas temperature is the hottest its ever been. What this means for the rest of the world if things keep heating up in the south pole. Experience amazing at your lexus dealer. Welcome back. Design tickets are sounding the alarm this morning after the worlds coldest continent set a recordhigh temperature. A part of antarctica reached 65 degrees fahrenheit on thursday. Eclipsing a 63. 5degree reading from 2015. This map shows the anomaly tracked by the Climate Change institute at the university of maine. So the day the record high was recorded, antarctica was warmer than some parts of texas. New york times climate reporter joins us now to talk about this a little bit. The United Nations says that antarcticas temperature has risen more than seven degrees fahrenheit in 50 years. What will happen if the temperature continues at this pace . Yeah. So we know that Global Warming is happening. I mean, we know thats a antarctica and the arctic are warming faster than the rest of the world. One is just sort of practical, which is antarctica is cold and it has a lot of ice and as it gets warmer, its going to melt. A study came out last year or the year before, i believe, and they said by centurys end, if antarctica continues to melt at the rate its melting, Sea Level Rise will rise about six inches which may not sound like a lot. But since 1993, sea level has risen about 2 1 2 inches. So adding another six inches on top of that is not going to be good. Its going to be catastrophic for a lot of people. At the same time, our weather system sort of depends on these temperature gradients. So like cold places being cold and hot places being hot. And as antarctica and arctic warm, that temperature grade kind of shrinks. And that means a lot of the atmosphere currents that kind of form our weather, they begin getting really wobbly. And things start changing and things get weird. So like the polar voer tertex t happened a bunch of winters, scientists are beginning to link to the antarctica melting. What is the implication to a warming antarctica for the rest of the world . Its telling us that the models are right. Its telling us that Climate Change is happening. Sort of everything we have known to be happening for a while in the climate reports which is that, you know, if we dont do something to reign in our Greenhouse Gas emissions, catastrophic things will happen. Its also not great for the animals that live in the antarctica. Penguins. Its not great for the aquatic life down there. So the whole system i dont want to say its falling apart. But like we are a network on this planet and its not good for that web. And real quick, is there any chance this could just be a Freak Weather event . I mean, weather is not climate. So yes, it is it could just be a Freak Weather event. But we know that its happening against this backdrop of a warming planet. So like, its its a strong signal that, like, whats happening like what we know whats happening with Global Warming is continuing to happen. Where theres smoke, there is fire.
