neck and neck hes not ahead of her and its not this close, but its a competitive race, and he is saying enough that is connecting. The thing is, again, so much of it has to do with the fact that sam stein, not that donald trump is lbj in policy or jfk as far as inspiration or Ronald Reagan as far as vision goes, and a lot of it is hes not Hillary Clinton. And people are running and going, they are racist, racist, racist, and so much of it ignores the fact that half of the vote is just a vote against Hillary Clinton because of the things that many think she has done over the past 40 years that many republicans believe are deplorable. Its not a vote against clinton, but its a vote against established republicans and wall street and et cetera. Theres no policy, and we should confront that and anytime he puts out a policy he will then, ten days later, take a different position. I think that, you know, we need to reconcile and deplorable statements. If we elect donald trump, we dont really know, and even on immigration, we dont know what we are getting. Because he changes it every 12 hours. about the foundation or about the staff or about this or that, and so the democratic side, you have a policyfree campaign, and she cant go out and talk about policy in a way that sticks, and then on the republican side, you have donald trump who is running on the force shear force of his personality. This is a policyfree zone and we can put up as many words as we want but on both sides, neither messages are getting through. Because this campaign is now, i would statement, more than 90 about distrust among people. They distrust both candidates and secretary clinton is out there each and every day and every time she appears, no matter what she says whether its a big set speech in policy, and what the public perceives about her is this baggage that she carries. 30 years of baggage. And its like they are carrying around 30 years of baggage, and going, uhg, and then she stops and says another bowling ball, sir. Can you put in another, please . For instance, she is sick the other day. We all understand people get sick, right. Come on, people. Come on, campaign. And David Axelrod, and this is the clinton problem, you cant bully the press and not lie to the world and not be caught for six months or a year, and David Axelrod tweets, what is the cure of an unhealthy pinch for privacy. Thats been my complain about the campaign for two years or for as long as the campaign has been together. The transparency issue is a real problem, and i said this candidate is flawed and the baggage that you so beautifully acted out for us. I have to say we lowered the ball. It all goes back to oliver. After all the horrible scandals that Hillary Clinton has been involved in and she has the gall to call us deplorable,

She talks about people like they are objects, not human beings. She said half of our supporters are reredeemable and not american. She describes the other half of having run out of options. Hillary clinton spoke with hatred in her heart for these working class americans. Absolute hatred in her heart. She looks down on the people who cook her meals and drive her cars and dig the coal that power her electricity. And its simple, wants to bully the American Voter out of voting for change. You can always find a bad apple or somebody deplorable in any politicians crowd. And you can always find somebody good. My only point was, the road to the white house does not find itself insulting 25 of the
population, and the road to the white house winds through a sustained attack on your abonant. What are the numbers for Trump Supporters . On some of the policies . The muslim ban. Donald trump, i will say, has a lot of nerve talking about hatred in Hillary Clintons heart when he talks about we checked the make sure he had not play jurized. She made a smart speech about his connection to the kkk, and thats where she should go. Last night on cnn at 5 00, mike pence was given an opportunity to denounce on david duke. and we will run it. You have mexican rapists he talked about, and you have what he said about muslims, the muslim band, straight out of germany, 1933. You can go to specifics. Yeah, women bleeding out of their eyes wherever. You can go on and on and get specific there. It is the candidate, obviously, but theres also duh phaupb strawbly an uptick in racism from people supporting donald trump. I get the antisemitic emails in my inbox all the time, and other reporters covering the Donald Trump Campaign are receiving sreut tree annual no. Its true. That is on a different level
during this campaign. Let me tell you something. In 2008, i could say barack obama was the greatest person that jesus ever produced and could speak better than fdr, and et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, and i but he should wear a red tie instead of a blue tie, and the hatred that was spewed towards me in 2008 was like nothing i have ever seen before in my life. I understand, and we were sort of positive towards bernie, and i understand the hatred and the animosity and the vitriol, especially towards women from some of Bernie Sanders supporters, it was over the top, and so this happens all around. I think what we have to look at, though, are objective numbers, and mika, thats exactly what Dana Millbank did, you can look
and see how many tend to support racist views. Dana writes in the washington post, yes, half of Trump Supporters are racist and Hillary Clinton may have been unwise to say half of donald Trump Supporters are racist and others deplorables, but she was not wrong. Few people embrace the racist label. If you are very enthusiastic about a candidate who has based his candidate, and employed antisemitic imagery, well, you might be a racist. But if you are holding your nose and supporting trump only because you think him better than clinton, that doesnt put you in the basket. The New Washington post abc news poll finds the two groups equal. The rest were somewhat or not terribly enthusiastic, which, joe, leads me back to you because you said something fascinating yesterday, and you are the only person what did you say . If you are a muslim, you have to check in instead of the star of david maybe they put another patch on you, and an outrageous number, and they said though wanted to make islam illegal in the United States. You can call that a lot of things, okay, and i call it deplorable you want to ban a religion from the United States because you dont understand it. I think Hillary Clinton, if this debate continues may be on to something. You got questions like mike pence got. You respond to this. This is the type of thing that makes you die inside. Or lose. What Hillary Clinton did was shocking, and the people who support donald trump are not a basket of everything, they are americans. So you now have mike pence refusing to call the imperial grand wizard of the ku klux klan, and a man donald trump claimed he did not even know earlier in the campaign, refused to call him, quote, deplorable. I guess by their definition,
nobody is deplorable. Certainly Vladimir Putin, not only is not deplorable, hes a boyfriend. You can go down the list. Listen, Hillary Clinton standing up the other night and calling out racism and everything like that, thats a good thing. Yeah. But blaming it on voters is a bad thing. Right. That was a mistake. Right. On the other hand, and Dana Millbanks piece, i respect him very much, and a vast majority of the people that go to the trump rallies, you have been at the rallies and i have been at the rallies, and you cant decipher what they are saying, and lot of the supporters feel the system, and the candidates for every office have not been speaking to their needs and
their lives donald trump speaks to them in a way nobody else does. Thats what they hear. You cant blame for what they are hearing. I do think its important to call it racism where it is, and that means noting that a portion, not half, because its not half, and a portion of his base is racist, and i think she erred in saying they were irredeemable, she is saying i dont even want to talk to them, and i think thats the problem. Mike pence, first of all, why cant donald trump say anything bad about david duke the day before super tuesday, and why cant mike pence on september 12th, 2016, yesterday, why cant he say that david duke is deplorable . What is wrong with him . I have no idea. And if thats the hard question,
and the question about the supporters is more complicated. Why take my point is not that theres racist in his camp, of course, there are, and my point is the political argument. She is not going to win joe biden came on your show in philadelphia and he did not offend any Trump Supporters, and he spoke directly to economic despair in the country as a motivator to people being attracted to trump, and thats where hillary should go as a political matter, and calling trump out for racism and that is that a sweet spot, but attack his supporters for whatever reason, whatever the poll something, its stupid politics. And so far joe biden is the only one that understands that vote and understands in pennsylvania and in ohio and in wisconsin, she needs to not offend people on the fence. We have to find another video. And the man appears to strike the protester. N Asheville Police did not return nbcs police for comment on why the man was allowed to remain inside after his actions. Donald trump will not release his tax returns. I want to know if he is dealing with russian banks. He is either doing a lot of business with Vladimir Putin and
he is so compromised that Americas National security will be compromised or hes the biggest liar when it comes to his income, and hes only worth a couple 100,000 or a couple 100,000 million. It must be true. Or the third option is he didnt pay much taxes. He probably gets around stuff. All the developers do that. . The russian stuff, i want to find out about, is it true or not true . I dont think he will ever put it out. This is where Hillary Clinton is correct to talk about a double standard. This is perhaps one of the most complicated places in the world, but let me ask you, flawed compared to what . Compared to nothing . Compared to daily violence that absolutely guarantees a future of even more violence and possible sectarian explosion in the region . Lets go to washington now. We have former director of the cia, retired general michael hayden. And you know the generals that came onboard and supported donald trump, well general
hayden was not one of those. No. Talk about just how tenuous this ceasefire is, extraordinary important if secretary kerry can hold this together with the other groups, but how tenuous is it and how optimistic are you that we may get another week or two out of this . Yeah, joe, sadly, i am not very optimistic. This is a case where i think we are being noble and feckless at the same time. You saw secretary kerrys emotion about the killing, and in order to stop the killing, all right, were leaning on our allies to do things they dont want to do and we are holding our nose and closing our eyes and partnering with the russians and taking the fate of assad and pushing it off the planning cycle for the foreseeable
future, and so we are accepting a lot of strategic loss in order for an attempt to stop the killing, and again, mika, very noble, but a complicated deal. So many moving parts and its hard to explain in a coherent way, and i am sadly optimistic. We talked previously when i have been on the show about the russian goals here being different than ours. They are there to prop up their lone friend in the arab world, bashar al assad, and the resistance of that regime feeds the extremism we are trying to defe but in order to put a lid on the current violence we agreed to set up joint targeting or a joint intelligence cell with the russians and i am glad i am not in government and have
not been given that responsibility. What are you willing to share in the way of intelligence with the russians . What American Military officer is will to go put a bomb on any point on planet earth based upon russian intelligence. To go back to the assad element here, and for years, months, years, the administrations argument is you can never have a sustainable peace if assad was still in power, and so is this now just a fundamental rechanging or reorientation of the argument. And the second question, two weeks or three weeks, what are you looking at in terms of met tricks and news or whatever, to know if something is constructive and allowing for peace to be long term . To your first question, sam, secretary kerry is out there in nomansland. Hes got overall objectives and
you just stated, assad must go, and our government has not given him any tools adequate to effect of change and you have the secretary coming up with this kind of tenuous deal. My metric for success is probably the reduction in violence, and heres the punch line, can we pressure the russians and syrians to allow the Free Movement of goods and services to isolated areas now . Are the sieges of aleppo and other cities, are they going to stop, and are we going to be allowed to improve the quality of life of folks there . Frankly, right now, assad wants to expand his area of control and his toll for doing that is frankly putting pressure on the civilian population. General hayden, you are a master at understanding the level of putins ways, and do you think putin and they are
emboldened by trump . Is secretary kerry weakened at all of what is coming out of the Trump Campaign . Theres some things that make them more confident to go forward, and it clouds the american political discourse. Frankly, nicole, i think its more basic than that. We have not pushed back strongly against the russians in ukraine, crimea and syria, and we have sanctions that the administration can layout a whole list of things they can done, but for the life of me i do not know why we have given defensive arms to the ukrainians. Heres mike pence defending the Trumps Campaign of putin is
how a Trump Presidency would differenter from barack obama. Look, america is stronger than russia. The american political system is kpaerer than the russian political system in every way and we just simply need the president of the United States who will command the respect of the world, and donald trump will take the world as it comes and what you hear him saying is he is willing to engage foreign leaders. The ceasefire we are watching right now was brokered because the United States of america was willing to sit down with russia and give secretary kerry credit for sitting down with his counterpart and saying you need to bring assad to the table and we bring the insurgents to the
table and work out a ceasefire so humanitarian aid can flow. Why do i do inside . Because he knows what hes doing. Thats the thing. Pence said, governor pence said, donald trump has yet to express a condition which he would impose on Vladimir Putin for which he demands putins actions before he gets a better relationship with the United States. If he says nice about me, i will say nice about him, and thats not a winning hand. General, you are right, thats exactly what barack obama said in 2008, mocking and ridiculing Hillary Clinton and the Bush Administration and basically saying i will speak to the most deplorable leaders on the planet with no preconditions, and you are right, that sounds like the trump policy. All you have to do is compliment
him and he will talk to you. There may be a psychic echo here i just missed because of lack of evidence, and anything deeper in regard to the trump relationship, and i believe trump is the current face of authoritarian populism in the United States and Vladimir Putin is the global poster child for authoritarianism populism. No i dont think they would want to take on that responsibility, but you bring up a wonderful point, in defense of the deal, secretary kerry said it could be our last chance to

And the poll from yesterday, clinton maintains her lead with female voters in these four states as well. According to usa today the biggest swing is among White College educated voters, and a group that voted republican in
every election since 1952, and yesterday the poll showed the lead against grads, but in deep red arizona hes up by a single point. That would make a huge difference. Why is that happening . I think becau this election, which has been the most unorthodox i have ever read about or can remember is starting to frame up as a little more traditional of electorate. If you are even a loose partisan people end up going back to their corners by the end. We hear people in the summer going, im not voting for my mom knee and then in the end they go back to their own coners. If you push them, they are partisan, and i am independent, but i voted for the republicans in the last five elections, and you are probably republican. Can trump unify that group of people that voted for romney and mccain and george bush twice. He struggled with that, and he struggled in the convention and during Hillary Clintons convention, and i think you are starting to see the reality of the polarized politics and showing it may be stronger than even these two candidates who are both well known and polarizing. After a day off in the campaign in honor of 9 11, donald trump came roaring back against Hillary Clinton for her comment that half of his supporters bough long in a basket of deplorables, and the point became a point of pride for some backers, and donald trump jr. Tweeted an image of a rally with the caption, looks like we are going to need a bigger basket. And donald trump invited supporters onstage to respond to Hillary Clintons deplorable dig. My wife and i represent nondeplorable people [ cheering ] i am probably a lot of things, and deplorable is not one of them, i assure you. We are going to make America Great again. And hillary needs to take a nap. After all the horrible scandals that Hillary Clinton has been involved in and she has the gall to call us deplorable, and thats unbelievable. He gave me a hat after months of hiding from the press, Hillary Clinton came out and finally told the world how she feels about the people of this country. She talks about people like they are objects, not human beings. She said half of our supporters are irredeemable and not
american, and describes the other half of having run out of options. Hillary clintons spoke with hatred in her heart for these workingclass americans. Absolute hatred in her heart. She looks down on the people who cook her meals and drive her cars and dig the coal that power her electricity. Her goal is simple, to bully the American Voter out of voting for change. I believe most people around the table, mike, you dont win votes or some voters by calling other voters irredeemable. Going after bigotry in any
form or fashion, thats a good thing, and going after the people and not the candidate himself, not a good thing. It looks as if Hillary Clinton breathed new life into the Trump Campaign. Or at least given it an extra jolt of energy for its supporters. I mean, you want and i know because of my first campaign, you know, you want your supporters insulted, and you want them yeah, you want them angry. Emboldened. Yeah. And that energizes them and those people instead of just going to vote, they knock on doors and make phone calls and talk to people in church and talk to friends when they are dropping off their sons and daughters at schools, and they really get engaged. Hillary clinton just energized donald Trump Supporters. I think anytime you paint
with a broad brush, and half of the people have these views, you are in trouble. Right . That never works in politics. You have to say he has people supporting him like david duke who espouse these views who are outside of the mainstream of thought, and you dont want to be that person, and you can say that, and with mike pence, find another word besides deplorable, and find another word. I think this is not a good moment for Hillary Clinton. I think it has not been a good couple weeks. I thought the speech yesterday was one of trumps better speeches. Better compared to not good at all, but it was better and it was on message. She has struggled, look, from the fbi putting out their report to the health issue, and this is not been a good last month in
the same way two or three months were horrendous for trump. Hes still in the game because theres two choices. Hillary clinton and donald trump. Lots of people dont want this one and hes the only other one out there. And the fix has another piece up entitled. Their odds have not looked good all year but you have to look at two people, who if republicans hold the senate, which is less than a 50 50 propositions, marco rubio and rob portman, and rubio decided to win again, and joe knows this, thats a 20 Million Investment to get Rhonda Santos to get him to win that nomination and get him to be the senator. And in ohio, portman, despite that state has been close, and
strickland is talking about tim kaine being a good governor. Wow. If republicans hold the majority every single one of them should send rob portman a big whatever he likes, chocolates, flowers, because thats a huge reason. It does show campaigns matter. You couldnt find two republicans more different than rob portman and donald trump, and yet portman is seemingly prospering in this environment. I think its a lesson for all the other folks out there. You mention richard burr. The more the Republican Base comes home to trump, joe, you are going to see republican incumbents under performing bump up. That doesnt mean they will win

the book, if Hillary Clinton is elected president they will have to change the way they do business, and i dont think there are real conflicts of interests, i think there are potential ones if you are raising money while somebody is president. Right. When she and she was secretary of state, the same conflicts would arise. What is the difference between her as president and her as secretary of state and raising the money . When you are secretary of state you have limited power over defense contracts, and if you are president they all come to your desk, so i think the conflicts will be greater. When barack obama asked her to be secretary of state, she resisted at first, joe, and i think you remember that and she didnt want to do it, and he persuaded her and she said what about my husbands foundation, and they went through the rules. Did they follow the rules . We hear news reports they did not follow those reports . I think to the greatest percent they did follow the rules. When you ask somebody to report more than 300,000 contributions and i think you know as a former member of congress, sometimes thinks slip through the tracks and some did but not many. The early news from the book, colin powell as you reported advised Hillary Clinton to use a private email. Is he right or wrong and how is this debate coming out, and is he lying . What i think now, sam, is that he was telling her for months this is what she should do does that precede her time as secretary of state . I think around the time she was sworn in, and thats the time of the email, january 2009, and then the dinner at Madeline Albrights house that i
talk about in the book happens months later, when she invited former secretaries come and a advise her what to do, and the problem of when he tried to deny what was in the book, i had an email exchange with his principle assistant who told me when the dinner was and what he said at it. Does this make what she did right . Couldnt you argue, what powell did was wrong himself . I think what powell did do what wrong and what was worse he did not keep the emails and at least Hillary Clinton kept them and released 30,000 of them, and powell has none of them. It does not justify what she did. I dont think she says it did, and i think she is clear she doesnt think it justified her action but puts them in a
different light if somebody who she respected and preceded her in the office, this is what i did, and it changes a little bit her perspective on the decisions she made. And bill clinton, some think he slowed down and some think he is still affective. What your assessment of his current state of being a political operative essentially . In the book, and i go out with him on the trail again this year, and we went to philadelphia, a famous incident where the black lives matter incident happened, and a protester starts yelling at him, and he argues with her, and it became a big news story for a day, and i thought that was not his most effective moment and he had to apologize the next day and he said i should not have said it the way i did or Something Like that, but that morning in philadelphia i was
also with him and he went to see a huge group of africanamerican ministers who were gathered in the city quietly that day and nobody else was in the city except him and he was amazingly effective with him, and those, mostly men and some women, they went out to their pulpits across the country and helped to get her the nomination, so that definitely worked. There are moments of great effectiveness on his part and then moments where he is a little rusty. We should be careful too much pwae littling colin powell, but you touch on three or four episodes, and give us what you think was the most impactful. I know you talk about china and north korea, and which story were you struck by the most . Look, its the story that is
amazing, still to me, the north korea story where he went over there and with a few of his aides and rescued the two journalists that worked for al gores thentv network. In the book i got to see the memorandum and briefings that came out of the meetings that he had with the north korean dictator, and he was remarkable with them and despite we have a lot of problems with north korea still, they did some things that he tried to persuade them to do, and released some south koreaens and released the two journalists and made restitution to japan on some issues and he persuaded them and brought back and went back to the negotiations with the u. S. Over nuclear arms. I think he is still an extremely effective democrat. And there was a poll out that showed his approval ratings
dropped into 38, 39 . Why is that . Joe, this happens in every political race to him and it happened, if you recall, in 2008, and his ratings were terrible after south carolina, again, below 40, and its because its a combination of things, some of it is the polarization of politics and people forget they liked him, and mistakes in that case he made, and in this case, you know, its hard to defend every single thing you have done over 20 years, and you will be attacked on every single thing you have done, and thats what has happened. And some talk about how many of the clintons wounds are self inflicted. Isnt it fair to say that everybody in public life is going to be attacked, but it seemed to just like david
axiom rod said with the pneumonia clearly that was a mistake. A lot of their wounds are self inflicted. Its maddening for democrats that want her to win. In the book i say its clear, like times with the speeches, for instance, where they are so sure they are honest, and they are so sure of their integrity they dont understand they will see what people are doing. They are so right . Its not they are so right, mika, but Hillary Clinton knows she didnt take bribes from goldman sachs, i think she is sure of that, and she doesnt understand other people would see the big speech fees from golden sacks as a problem. Isnt that a problem . Well, i think somebody in there for decades joe, you right about the cgi
and different initiatives and everybody voices angry suspicions and unproven accusations and preventive theorys and we are all crazy and theres no connection here that seems appropriate. I am not sure what you mean . Crisscrossing with the state department and perhaps inappropriate relationships used for the wrong things. I have not seen one. I have not seen one. You have would have tell me a specific one. In general, is there anything terrible do you understand why there are many people that want to see emails missing because they are concerned about this . I guess so. But you would have to show me connecting the dots is a simple exercise, but you have to show that theres a motive and you have to show that somebody did something because of something else. Its hard to connect the dots when they destroy the emails, just like the Rose Law Firm billing records. Billing records were never
destroyed, joe. No, they were taken away. No, they were always available come on, joe. They showed up two years later. Thats not correct. There were copies missing for a while and they were found in the white house at the beginning of an election year. Found in the white house in the middle of a table. What did they prove when they were found . We dont know because the clintons you need to read the final report of the independent council. This is sort of bs that the clintons always play and we are trying to have a nice interview here, but please dont act like we are stupid. They take custody of records, be emails or billing records, and they then decide what the world sees and what the world doesnt see, and we dont know if the process is legitimate or not joe let me finish because you know where i am getting and then after they decided what we all
see, so see nothing is there, and this proves it. They turned over billing records, and what did they show . Read the independent counsels final report, you should. They found no wrong doing whatsoever. Why did they keep it away from them for so long . They were lost. They didnt. They had the same records anyway. Those were copies. The 90s were fun. Its a lot like the emails. You release the emails lets just be honest. You sort through the emails and decide what the world will see believe me, i want her to win. Look, on this show, joe, you said that or you suggested that she had done something for algeria and made a donation, so thats the kind of accusation that gets thrown out and its not even close to being correct, as you know, and then we later
come, months later, and somebody says isnt there all this flack about the Clinton Foundation and we heard these stories, and thats in the mix, and all the stories i examine in the book carefully so all the news reports they are inventive theories. I think its easy to show well, he had a speech and she did something as secretary of state and therefore you could imagine if you look at them that way that this was done because of that, but theres no evidence that actually happened. This is the thing most people lets forget about the specifics and lets go general. This is what even Hillary Clintons strongest supporters are saying, why in the world would she get paid 240 or 250,000 for a speech, and sometimes from a state school that she represented in the senate not so long ago, and why would bill clintons fees jump
up from 550,000 when she becomes secretary of state, and with the foundation, and yeah, the foundation. She knew she was going to run for president. What, 100 million this is what we just talked about. I dont think they are worth 100 million worth enough she did not need to do it. You will not get an argument from me about that. As i said a few minutes ago, theres a blind spot on their part about this, and i think thats clear. They definitely made mistakes. Thats destructive to a potential candidacy. Yeah, okay. I am not fighting with you about that. I am fighting about the substance, i dont think theres substance. We have a break, and we have gone way over. The Clinton Foundation admitted thursday that a 2010 donation from the algerian government was not properly approved under the guidelines of the Obama Administration they put in place of the foundation when clinton became secretary of state in 2009. Cnn goes on to report the unso
listitted. The foundation the Obama Administration signed into agreement that outlined how the foundation would deal with it, but as cnn reports again, this 500,000 donation violated the clintons own agreement with the Obama Administration, and we thank joe con sun for bringing that to our attention. And then a man from the crowd at a trump valley went over to violently confront them and appears to strike a protester and the man was allowed to remain for the rest of the rally. And the police did not immediately return our call for comment about how the man was allowed to stay, and democratic
coalition wants to charge trump for these comments after the protesters were escorted out. Let me ask this question. Is there anyplace in america that is more fun to be than a trump rally . That would be what you would call the glorification of violence . Wouldnt it be that . Probably that, but its tough to when you say punch him in the face. I cant believe i am about to say this, in all likelihood he obviously did not see what was happening in the raptors. Katie, what happened . Reporter i was not there. rallies get tense and it has calmed down and we have not seen slashes from supporters and protesters until last night, when there is physical touching of some sort or roughing up, whatever you want to call it, or an assault or punc and donald trump says exactly what you heard him say, theres no more fun except at a trump rally, and when a man sucker punched a protester in North Carolina also, donald trump offered to pay his legal fees, and these sorts of things, this violence and you have been saying it for a while now, its not only its not its not discouraged in any way. A lot of it is just that hes not Hillary Clinton. Right. Thats why when people are running going, oh, theyre racist, theres racist. Hes racist. Theyre racist. So much of it ignores the fact that half of the vote is just a vote against Hillary Clinton because of the things that many people think she has done over the past 40 years that many republicans believe are
deplorable. Its not just that vote against Hillary Clinton. Its a vote against established republicans against politicians in general, washington, so on and so forth. There is no policy here. We should just confront that. There is no policy because any time he puts out a policy, he will then ten days later take a different position. That becomes difficult to judge his policy on anything other than his personality. And hatred. To some extent, yes. I think we need to sort of reconcile what and deplorable statements. A different story about emails or about the foundation or about the staff, about this or about that. So on the democratic side, you have not at the candidates desire, a policyfree campaign. She just cant she can never go out and talk about policy in a way that sticks. Then on the republican side, you have donald trump who is running on the force, sheer force of his personality. So this really is this is a policyfree zone. We can put up as many words as we want. On both sides, neither messages are getting through. Neither of them has a message, a stirring message of getting through because this campaign is now, i would estimate, more than 90 about distrust among people. They distrust both candidates. Secretary clinton is out there each and every day and every time she appears, no matter what
she says, whether its a big set speech on policy, what the public sees and perceives about her is this baggage that she carries. 30 years of baggage. And mike, they do. And its like theyre carrying around 30 years of baggage, walking, going and then she stops and says, im not a bowling ball. Its still better than can you put in an anvil please . For instance, shes sick the other day. We all understand. People get sick, right . Come on, people. Come on. And screw it up. David axelrod said that. You get that tweet . This is perfect. And this is the clinton problem. Its not 1996. She cant bully the press. You cant lie to the world and not be caught for six months or a year. Well, and thats been my complaint about the campaign for two years. For as long as the campaign has been together. Very harsh about that. I know, the transparency issue is a real problem. You always can find a bad apple. You can always find somebody deplorable in any politicians crowd. And you can always find somebody good. My only point was shes not the road to the white house doesnt wind its way through insulting 25 of the population no matter how deplorable a politician thinks they are. The road to the white house winds through a sustained attack on your opponent. Thats not what shes engaged in now. What are the numbers . What are the numbers for trump supporter snz. On some of these policies . The muslim ban, because donald trump really has, i will just say, a lot of nerve talking about hatred in Hillary Clintons heart when he starts out by talking about mexican rapists. We checked to make sure he hadnt plagiarized because that was almost lifted from what she says. So she gave a speech a week before, i think this might have been on her brain, a week before she made that deplorables in a fruit basket comment, she gave what i thought was a really smart speech, i wish a republican had given it, about his connection to the kkk and the altright. Thats where she should go. On cnn at 5 00 last night, mike pence was given an opportunity to denounce david duke and he passed on it. Wolf blitzer said is david duke deplorable, and he wouldnt answer. We have the sound for that. You have mexican rapists he talked about, what he said about obviously muslims, the muslim ban. Straight out of germany 1933. You can go to specifics. Exactly. One after another after another. Women bleeding out of their eyes. Wherever. I was talking her ears. And you can go on and on and on and on. Again, very specific there. I want to stress something because it is the candidate, obviously. But there is also demonstrably an uptick in racism from people supporting donald trump. I know this. I get the antisemitic emails in my inbox all the time. Other reporters who cover the Trump Campaign are constantly receiving vitriol in a way that is abnormal for normal campaigns. We talked about well
no, no. Looking at a camera for sarah palin supporters to get an image. That is on a different level during this campaign with donald trump. It is. Let me tell you something. In 2008, i could say barack obama was the greatest person that jesus ever produced, and could speak better than fdr, et cetera, et cetera. But he should wear a red tie instead of a blue tie. The vitriol and the hatred that was spewed towards me in 2008 was like nothing i have ever seen before in my life. I understand, now, we were sort of positive towards bernie. I understand the hatred and the animosity and the vitriol, especially towards women, from some of Bernie Sanders supporters was over the top and unlike anything that women reporting had ever seen before. So this happens all around. I think what we have to look at, though, are objective numbers, and mika, thats exactly what dana milbank did. You can actually look and see how many tend to support racist views. Right. How many are xenophobic. Dana milbank write in the washington post, half of Trump Supporters are racist. Hillary clinton may have been unwise to say half of Donald Trumps supporters are racist and others deplorables, but she was not wrong. Few people embrace the racist label, so let me help them. If youre very enthusiastic about a candidate who has based his campaign onlatinos, and africanamericans, talked of banning muslims from the country, hesitated to disown the ku klux klan and employed antisemitic imagery, well, you might be a racist. But if youre holding your nose and supporting trump only because you think him better than clinton, that doesnt put you in the basket. The New Washington post abc news poll finds the two groups roughly equal. 46 of Trump Supporters say they are very enthusiastic about his candidacy. The rest were somewhat ornot terribly enthusiastic, which, joe, leads me back to you because you said something fascinating yesterday. The only person what did you say . Oh, my god. I slept through it. I did, too. What did i say . You said that this might actually be might have been strategic on her part. Is that a safe way of putting it . I said that this, at the end of the day, could be strategic. What trump always does is makes a controversial statement. Gets everybody talking about trump. It usually gets people talking about trump on his territory. After paris, hell Say Something outrageous. Barack obama may have known something about this. Everybody is outraged. People are saying. People are saying. But youre talking about terrorism for a week or two. He thinks thats his strong suit. Here, she says half of the supporters are apologized. People epikeep talking about it. It forces people to look at who is supporting donald trump. We have the poll from yesterday, and the poll from yesterday showed certainly the last time these sort of polls were taken in the primary, it shows an outrageously high number of Trump Supporters support a muslim ban, support a national database, if youre a muslim, you have to check in. I guess, i dont know, instead of the star of david, maybe they put another patch on you. An outrageous number actually said they wanted to make islam illegal in the United States. You can call that a lot of things, okay. I call it deplorable. Right. You want to ban a religion from the United States because you dont understand it. So i think Hillary Clinton, if this debate continues
may be on to something. May actually be on to something. You get questions like mike pence got yesterday. Im sorry, mike. You can respond to this. This is what happened. Im already dead inside. If you havent died inside well lose. So this is why Hillary Clinton may have done what Hillary Clinton did. Donald trump has denounced david duke repeatedly. The vast majority of people who go to these trump reallies, you have been at the rallies, i have been at the rallies. You cant really decipher what theyre hearing when they hear everybody is hearing their own thing. Right. Its largely because a lot of the Trump Supporters, im not going to say a majority, im not
going to call them deplorables, but a lot of them feel the system, the political system and candidates for every office, locally, state wide, and federally, have not been speaking to their needs and their lives. And donald trump speaks to them in a way that nobody else does. Thats what they hear. You cant blame them. I dont blame them. I do think its important, as you note, to call out racism where it is. That means noting that a portion, not half, because its not half, a portion of Donald Trumps base is racist. You have to say it. I think where she erred is not just saying in half of them, but saying theyre irredeemable. That makes her seem like that was horrible. Shes saying these people, i cant even talk to, i dont even want to talk to. Thats the problem. Larry is the author of the new book jfk and the reagan revolution, a secret history of american prosperity. Tell us about the book. The basic story of the book is, the real pioneer for supply side tax cuts was john f. Kennedy, the democrat. First time since the 1920s the tax cuts were made, and his treasury secretary who was a republican, douglas dillon, was the main driver in this story, and kennedy wound up rejecting his liberal academic pals and went with dillon. Slashed tax rates across the board, top, middle, low, corporate, everything, and it
works. It worked v eed very well. I havent seen the supply side economics portion of the kennedy library. Would the kennedys take offense to that characterization. Who knows what john f. Kennedy would think, but larry is absolutely correct on the mechanics of what happened in the early 60s. The question today, larry, and your encouragement of a tax policy similar to what jack kennedy did and what Ronald Reagan did. Technology today has played such an enormous role in reshaping our economy. Do you think it would still work the way it worked in the early 1960s today . I do. I think youre right about the technology revolution. A lot of that was spurred, by the way, by lower tax rates, which provided more incentives and rewards to go out there and take a risk and swing from the heels. Fail, go back and start again. Look, the point were making is reagan took kennedys tax cuts. I mean, its usually if you dont like tax cuts, you go
after reagan. Reality is you should go after jfk. Jack kemp and some others, i was in the reagan administration, but during the late 70s, jack kemp and some others went to reagan and said, we want to use the jfk tax cuts. 30 across the board, and reagan adopted that policy. Very good at it. In terms of today, i think, mike, i would like to see total tax reform, a real simpler system and the lowest rates possible. But, but, the most important issue in my view now is business taxes. Which are way too high and completely uncompetitive around the world. And to me, thats the equivalent of the 91 tax rate. Clinton is going to give you a real argument on that. Paul crudman and i have never agreed on anything, so thats not shocking to me. But you talk to almost anybody, seriously, you can talk to larry summers. Almost a consensus in washington, d. C. Today about the need to cut Corporate Tax rates, and by the way, its for large
and small companies. Thats the key point there. And i think you would reignite a tremendous economic boom. We havent had growth in 15 years. Important context, the top tax rate for kennedy was 91 . In terms of deciding who is the supply side or not, you characterize donald trump as a supply sider, just yes or no . Hes got a supply side tax cut program. Are you worried very much jfk reagan tradition. Youre a deficit hawk. Are you worried about the fact theres a huge tax cut on one hand and on the same hand, he wants a massive infrastructure deal. He wants to get rid of the sequestration of the military, he has said he doesnt want to touch entitlement programs like Social Security and medicare. Are you worried theres no way to get this math to actually work . Well, actually, by the way, im really not a deficit hawk. Im a growth guy. I have always been a growth guy. So the answer to your question is, working on a lot of the details in the campaign informally, but yeah, the numbers are working out very nicely. They are . Yes, they are. We have made some tweaks here and there. We have added some things and taken some things out. Mr. Trump is speaking on thursday at the new york economics club. I think some of those details will be unveiled. Im not in a position to say right now. But those numbers are going to be fine. The numbers never work. I mean, i dont believe these big estimating models. But you know, i accept your point. And that will be a main theme, is to try to make it as close to revenue neutral as possible. I have one more question. As an informal adviser to the Trump Campaign, can you tell me what his position is on the minimum wage . I cant figure out if he wants to raise it or lower it in. His position is, if you have to do it, let the states do it not the federal government. Talking to him, i think thats his basic view. Look, let me be clear. The book is not about this election. Sure, right. The book is about the jfk
story predominantly and how reagan adopted it and how reagan quoted kennedy all the time. Thats all been lost to history. I do say this. I dont see why tax cuts in general, specifically the business tax cuts, have to be a republican or a democratic issue. Whats i dont think it needs to be. What should the Corporate Tax rate be . 40 federal and state level. What should it be . Oh, well, at the end of the day, i would have zero. I would abolish it myself. Trump is 15 for large and small companies. Why would you abolish it . Its a waste. We dont make money. It cause uz double and triple taxation. But im a flat tax guy. I would get rid of all that stuff. And mr. Trump is at 15 . Particularly for small businesses, which i think is really key to his own policies. Now, jfk didnt do much. Last night, clinton acknowledged she continued to keep up with the packed Campaign Schedule in spite of the advice from her physician to rest five days. Well, look, i have spent the past 24 hours talking to a range of folks, everyone from voters to elected officials and democratic strategists. My sense is there are some democrats who are in full bedwetting mode over this rough patch secretary clinton has had, but not all of them. There is sense she has time to recover and there are a couple reasons why. The first is that at this point in time, theres no real evidence donald trump is greatly expanding his base. Hes made that pitch to africanAmerican Voters, latinos, but a lot of voters feel as though that is coming too little too late and then the poll that shows 60 of voters think hes biased against women and minorities. The second is that you have the debates there. One democratic strategist said to me it is better for secretary clinton to spend the next ten days resting and to come back in strong form in the debates and show that she can be more president ial than donald trump. They say that is going to be the greatest test. And then theres also this sense when you talk to voters, theres an empathy. They say, look, we know what its like to get sick and feel as though you have to go to work anyway. And then finally, secretary clinton does have a strong bench
of surrogates who are about to get out on the trail for her. Of course, former president bill clinton set to go out to the west coast today to step in for his wife. And he was on charlie rose. Take a listen to what he had to say. She had two and a half hard days before the day when she got dizzy. But i think shes fine now. The doctor seems to think so. Today she made a decision which i think was correct to cancel her campaign day. Right. To take one more day to rest. But she looked like a million bucks this morning. I can tell shes feeling a lot better. Is it possible she will be away for weeks from the campaign trail . No, not a shot. Ill be lucky to hold her back another day. And of course, president obama hits the trail for her today in philadelphia. She hes going to be really critical because shes underperforming in some of his key groups who voted for him, groups like latinos and young voters. Wrote on his facebook page, quote, my dad had parkinsons since 1989 so i know a bit about the disease. They may have admitted Hillary Clinton has pneumonia, but thats not why she has pneumonia. I believe she has pneumonia caused by parkinsons disease. Is that a doctor saying that . He also speculated clinton is hiding a medical device under her clothes. He is a trump delegate at the rnc and is also a New Hampshire state representative. Not to be confused with fellow rep and fellow trump veteran coalition cochair al baldazaro, who repeatedly called for clinton to be shot in a firing squad because of treason. Number one, if you look at real inflation, and its silly that the fed is trying to spur 2 inflation because that means their wages are falling further and further behind because theyre competing with china, with india, with the rest of the e. M. So the feds policy of spurring inflation is totally wrong, and as a result of that, real incomes for the households of america are down 20 if you count inflation. I would get rid of the feds 2 target. Secondly, it is crushing savers. In flyover america, they dont
save very much. They cant. They dont have the discretionary income, but what they do save is worth nothing today because that free money goes to wall street. Savererize being destroyed. I would say the heart of the problem is the federal reserve. Lightning round. You dont look like Elizabeth Warren, but you sound like Elizabeth Warren. Donald trump is more likely to take on wall street than hillary. After all, hillary was for Sweet Nothings and gets 700,000 a speech. Hillary thinks the fed is doing a wonderful thing and that janet yellen is an american hero. Are you in favor of raising the minimum wage . I think it would be a mistake in a world of robotics where you would destroy millions of lowwage entry jobs. Good you want to help lowwage people, you improve the earned income tax credit. If people earned 8 an hour, top it off with 4 or 5 of earned income credit. If you try to go in the market and manipulate and set wages, youre going to drive you think hillary would be a closer friend to wall street . Which one of the candidates wants to gut the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau . The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau they just won a huge, huge settlement from wells fargo. You cant have a couple hundred bureaucrats at the consumer Protection Bureau chasing around what all of these giant banks are doing.
