And developing also at this hour, thousands of counterprotesters take to the streets of boston demonstrating against hate following a free speech rally but things didnt stay peaceful all afternoon. Good evening everyone, im natasha brown. Thank you so much for joining us. What began as a planned free speech rally for activists in boston quickly turned into an antihate antiracism movement. Crowds of counterprotesters filled the streets surrounding activists and booing their message. At least two dozen people have been arrested as some of the counterprotesters clashed with officers. Cbs news correspondent Kenneth Craig has more. Reporter thousands of counterprotester counterprotesters outnumbered conservatives who showed up for a free speech rally in downtown boston. Organizers insisted event was not a platform for hate but several alt right speakers attended. Tom gallagher says he could not stay home and be silent. I respect free speech. Thats not free speech. Thats hate speech. He was among a cloud fighting White Supremacy that that marched several miles to the boston commons where speakers spoke out from a band stand. Officials say the decision to remove the statue was done to ensure the safety of students and Community Members and to express the universitys values. In houston thousands have signed a petition to take down the spirit of the confederacy statue. Many showed up at the statue for a protest and counterprotest this afternoon. Police say they will not tolerate any violence. A Memorial Service was held today meantime for Virginia State trooper killed in a Helicopter Crash during the charlottesville protest. Bag pipes and drums played in memory of lieutenant jay cullen. He was monitoring the White Nationalist protest when his Helicopter Crashed. A second trooper on board burke bates was also on board. After deadly protests in Charlottesville Virginia last weekend over the removal of confederate monuments there have been renewed calls in philadelphia to take down tributes to rizzo a controversial former mayor. Hes a personal friend of our family. We knew the man personally and we do not feel as though he was racist. Reporter she has been guest lecturing for months on Solar Eclipses and preparing for a big event monday at the university to celebrate the i can clips which has become a national obsession. Reporter the edelman planetarium which has a 40foot dome screen and seats about 100 people is a great place to learn about astronomy year round.
