Reporter fueled by the notorious sundowner winds, the fire surrounding Santa Barbara exploded overnight, doubling in size to 4,000 acres. 90 degree temperatureses in the canyons, combined with 50mileperhour winds, sent the fires wing down mountains and on to the main highway, causing road closures and sending firemen to take cover. 400 people were evacuated. Ranch hand griffin sterch, is on standby. We didnt think it was going to come this early. It came out of nowhere. It ended up getting thicker and thicker and off of a sudden we started hearing sirens so we knew it was a big deal. Reporter this area has not had a fire in nearly 70 years. Santa barbara fire chief Eric Peterson says the states fiveyear drought has left the area especially vulnerable. The fuels out there are drought stressed. Theres a lot of tree mortality out there that, you know, makes fire behavior worse. So its its drought is making an already pretty volatile situation not any better. Reporter over 1200 firefighters are battling the socalled sherpa fire in high heat and difficult, chestdeep canyon terrain. Tankers have been dropping retardant on these bonedry hillsides ahead of the fire so the flames dont reach nearby homes. Temperatures topping 100 degrees andegreesdegreesand low humilitd fires. Jeff pegues is following the investigation. Reporter documents released tonight say omar mateen talked about bringing a gun to a College Class at a florida Law Enforcement school in 2007. When the Virginia Tech shooting happened days later, a supervisor recommended he be kicked out saying mateens behavior is at best extremely disturbing. Prior to the orlando shooting, an official tells cbs news mateen was active on dating sites, searching for both men and women. He tried to meet gay men and was forthcoming about being married. Investigators are finding more evidence mateen had a history of erratic behavior. His academic records note behavioral problems including a lack of selfdiscipline and selfcontrol and that he lacks remorse. Didnt really have too many friends. Reporter High School Classmate Robert Zirkle remembers being on a school bus with mateen on 9 11. Like, when he came up the stairs, he was acting like a plane, he had his arms out, he was, like, making a plane noise. And he made, like, a boom sound, like an explosion type of sound, fell in his seat and was, like, laughing about it, like it was a joke or something. And he did that a few times more on the bus. Like, when the bus would go he would start doing it again and it would stop and he would make a boom again. Reporter investigators continue to piece together mateens recent past. In april he signed over part of a property he owned to family members for a nominal 10. Earlier this month, he bought the weapons useed in the attack, and right before the attack, pledged allegiance to isis. About two hours after he started shooting people at the pulse nightclub, Law Enforcement officials tell cbs news mateen and his wife, noor, exchanged texts. Investigators continue to look into mateens wife, who they say was with him on surveillance trips to the nightclub, and disdiz me world. Authorities say it is likely she will face some charges. Former u. S. Attorney vincent cohen. You have to go back and find out where she has been, how often she was with her husband, and what they were doing. And when you put those two together, the knowledge and the the possibility act, then you have enough to bring a charge. Reporter investigators have not found evidence that mateens was directed by isis. Scott, they are finding incidents over the years, which paint the killer as unstable and a potential threat. Pelley jeff pegues for us. Jeff, thank you. Earlier this week, we heard the story of demetrice naulings, who escaped the nightclub only to discover that his best friend, eddie justice, was killed. Well, today, eddie justices mother spoke to jamie yuccas. I he texts me, i love you t 2 06. Then he was like, hes down at a club, and theyre shooting. You just never know when your time is up. It saddens me that my brother had to had to give his life. As a people we need to come together and just love each other and not hate. Well let everybody know who he was, what he stood for. We want to talk about him. Im going to keep talking and keep talking until i cant talk no more. Reporter eddie droy justice was her only son. Mina justice says he kept a stuffed animal on his bed that she now often holds because, scott, it smells so much like him. Pelley jamie yuccas in orlando for us this evening. Jamie, thank you. Today, defense secretary ash carter called out russia for bombing Syrian Rebels that are backed by the united states. American and russian warplanes are fighting on opposite sides of the civil war. Moscow backs the assad dictatorship. Heres david martin. Reporter the attack by russian fighter bombers on americanbacked Opposition Forces appeared to be deliberate and to ignore repeated u. S. Warnings. It happened in southern syria, where two su34s bombed Opposition Forces, some of them trained and equipped by the pentagon, as part of the war against isis. When the americanrun command center, which tracks russian flights in yellow up on that big screen, realized what had happened, it called the Russian Command Center in syria on a hot line set up specifically to avoid incidents like this, demanding the plane ceasefire. Two american f18 jet fighters were dispatched to provide air cover for the troops on the ground as they tried to evacuate their casualties. By the time the f18s arrived, the russian planes were headed away, although still close enough to see. But when the f18s broke away to refuel, the russians returned for a second bombing run. Another call went out to the Russian Command Center in syria demanding the planes wave off. And the crew of an Airborne Command post tried to contact the russian pilots directly but got no response. The su34s conducted another bombing run leaving a small number of opposition fighters dead on the ground. Its been nearly nine months since russian intervened in syrias civil war, and although russian planes have flown close to american aircraft before, this was the most serious incident between the two militaries. Aides to defense secretary carter say he was irate at the russian actions, but publicly he confined himself to calling them unprofessional. Scott. Pelley david martin terpentagon. David, thank you. Well, in a surprising dissent on the obama administrations syria policy, a group of american diplomats is urging direct military action. Our correspondent Margaret Brennan tells us that 51 midlevel state Department Employees signed a letter urging u. S. Military strikes to take out the dictatorships air force and artillery. The state department set up an internal system for dissent after vietnam, but this was the first time so many have signed on to a protest. About 500,000 syrians have been killed, nearly 12 military have fled their homes. In neighboring iraq, theres been an important victory against isis. Iraqi forces backed by the u. S. And iran swept into the center of fallujah, a city west of baghdad that isis has held for two years. Isis fighters fell back to the edges of the city. Reporter its one of the toughest punishments ever handed out in track and field after an investigation found evidence of statesponsored systematic doping. Sebastian coe is the head of track and fields world governing body. What would you say to athletes who missed out on winning competitions, missed out on medals because of russian cheating . Well, im a former athlete, a clean athlete. Clean athletes must know that we are not just with warm words in their corner. We are actually out there to defend their rights. Reporter but a new report this week from the World Antidoping Agency says theres been more cheating in recent months with 52 russian athletes testing positive. And the former head of russias antidoping lab, grigory rodchenkov, now says that up to 100 tainted urine samples were switched for clean ones at the sochi winter olympic wheres russia topped the medal tally. But theres another scandal, too. Despite years of mounting evidence, the Antidoping Agency only acted after a german documentary proved that russian doping was widespread. It was the work of investigative journalist hajo seppelt who told us the sporting establishment turned a blind eye. Big ceremonies and big celebrations and big events and high tv ratings that is their main interest. Reporter they dont want to know about doping. They dont want to know so much about doping. But to uncover the real extent of doping is not good for the business. Thats very clear. Reporter the former head of track and fields world governing body, lamine diack, is also being investigated. Well, now, the company has agreed to a government demand, and heres Manuel Bojorquez. And this is the piece of it here. Reporter betty banks learned she had chinesemade Lumber Liquidators laminate flooring in her texas home last year. She believes it was making her sick. I was experiencing a runny nose, runnyize, a dry, hacking cough. Reporter did you know there was a need, possibly to test the flooring you had in your home . No. Reporter as part of an undercover investigation, 60 minutes went inside some of the chinese factories where the laminate boards were made. Their investigation revealed workers were using boards with higher levels of formaldehyde to make Lumber Liquidators laminate in order to cut costs. The flooring was sold between 2011 and 2015 and was purchased by 614,000 customers in the u. S. Lumber liquidators has tested the air quality in only a fraction of those homes, 17,000. But the Consumer Product Safety Commission is now requiring Lumber Liquidators use a more stringent measure to test the flooring, and wants all homes to be tested under a new recall program. Elliott kaye is the commissions chairman. There is a concern that some homes could still have harmful levels of formaldehyde coming from certain products from the company and the safest course of action is to go ahead, follow the recall to test, get the test kit, and facility steps that weve laid out. Reporter customers must request test kits from the company and are asked not to remove the flooring on their own as that could cause exposure to the chemical. Betty banks says she could not wait. She paid to have the boards removed but says shes run out of money for a new floor. Turned my life bottomsides up. You would never believe the agony that ive been going through. Reporter Lumber Liquidators is facing more than 200 class action lawsuits. What were building together. And could this happen again . I was given warfarin in the hospital, but wondered, was this the best treatment for me . I spoke to my doctor and she told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots. But eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Knowing eliquis had both. Turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless you doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious, and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made switching to eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if its right for you. Will there ever be a death toll large enough, a victim innocent enough to make us finally bring this parade to an end . If theres hope, its that every time a shooter takes another life, he adds to the army of friends and family who will not be quieted.
