that may continue today with the winds staying strong. we won't warm up much today.. or the rest of the week. i'll have that cold forecast for you in a few minutes. we have breaking news this morning... waterloo firefighters are on the scene of a fire. firefighters are at western avenue. they've been there for about the last hour or so. it appears to be a home -- but our crew says it could also be a duplex with multiple families living there. our crew is seeing smoke coming from the building. right now you're getting a live look at the scene. we're still working to get more information. once we learn more about the fire -- we'll let you know. another big story this morning. a showdown between governor branstad -- a former iowa lawmakers. today, former governor chet culver is having town hall in coralville and cedar rapids. he's now one of the critics of current governor terry branstad's plan to privatize the state's medicaid system. culver said last week the move could put people's health at risk. branstad fired back and said culver's trying to quote.. "torpedo a thoughtful systematic approach" ... "that kind of partisanship should have no place in trying to deliver the best health care to the citizens of iowa." but -some lawmakers say the governor hasn't been able to show his plan would actually save money... "a lady got up and said i have alternatives are and which way he should go." a senate subcommittee approved a bill that would repeal the governor's actions. governor branstad could veto it, but they hope to convince the federal government to delay the switch. gun owners in the state are pushing to legalize suppressors. the iowa firearms coalition is working with lawmakers on a bill. committee and could go to a vote on the senate floor in the next few weeks. critics say this is not the right direction the state should take at a time when there's so much gun meantime... a decision to boost a shooting sports program has caused outrage from alumni at an iowa college. it's gaining popularity at simpson college, and now the school plans to hire a full-time coach. opponents say it not only promotes guns on campus but it's against the college's religious beliefs.. but the president believes the program will not put students or 'what we are talking about is a very controlled environment residential areas of the campus...' the college expects to hire a full-time coach soon. the planned parenthood clinic in colorado springs where three people were killed in november is set to reopen next week. a police officer and two others were killed and nine people wounded in a shooting spree the clinic reopening, planned parenthood will have increased security. we have breaking news this morning... at least four are dead and 40 are seriously injured after two trains crashed head-on in germany. than three hours after the crash, emergency services were still trying to reach people trapped in the wreckage. emergency helicopters lined up to take the most severely injured to hospitals. a spokesman for german police said the area was very inaccessible and making rescue efforts more difficult. a family is suing the city of flint and the state of michigan over the water crisis there. the family says their two year-old daughter is one of the children with high levels of lead in her blood. the tap water in flint was contaminated after the source was switched from detroit to the flint river in 2014... really putting parents in between a rock and hard spot here. you know, we have children that, that we really care about and we want the best for and it seems like our city officials do this is the first individual lawsuit stemming from the contamination. an illinois school district remains closed because of lead concerns. teachers and community members spent time over the weekend clearing out the elementary school after tests found high levels of lead, dust and mold in the building. unchecked and unreported. a small town in missouri is on edge after new evidence shows the chlorine levels in their tap water hadn't been checked for five years. now, the old director is out and a new company is in... but "it's pretty alarming when you see at six years that it wasn't tested." people with the water district say the water was never dangerous... but because the levels were not checked, they can't guarantee it was safe. continuing coverage--- we're learning more about the three people who died in a crash icy roads are being blamed for the crash. the three men who died were all in their thirties, from congo. they had just moved to cedar rapids. the vice president of the congolese community in iowa tells kwwl their funerals will likely be on the same day -- but the community is in knoxville -- firefighters are investigating a deadly fire that happened sunday night. when crews arrived, one of the homeowners was outside. he had to run to get help. his wife was still inside. fireifghters pulled her out from the home...but she later died. her husband is being treated at 'anytime there is a loss my sympathies go out to the family on losing a loved one and the everything they could to try and get her out of the house.' the cause of the fire is still being determined. decision 20-16... all eyes are on new hampshire this morning as the nation's first presidential primary is underway. where several candidates are hoping for a surprise finish. "we are exploring different like to sit down at the table and say why did you vote no." the district isn't giving up on the idea of the career center. a committee plans to go back to the drawing board and take a look at the voter data. the time now is a teenager pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his sister. this is a picture of diryun coffer with his sister jykeria. he shot and killed her by accident last year. the gun he used was stolen during a burglary earlier that day. theeudge says he'll go to the state training school for boys in eldora. when he turns 18, he'll face a charge of trafficking stolen weapons. an iowa man involved in a deadly crash pleads guilty. alexander engling pleading guilty to vehicular homicide and authorities say he lost control of his car and flipped it in holy cross last year his passenger -- john cook -- died. engling will be sentenced in april. three people are recovering this morning after a crash in cedar falls. it happened on university avenue yesterday. five cars were involved and three people were sent to the hopsital with minor injuries. rescue crews say blowing g ow could've been a factor. one person was hurt in this crash off highway 20 in dubuque. police say the driver of this semi -- was going too fast getting off 20 onto the bryant street ramp. the driver told police, his brakes were acting up. a highway 20 intersection in dubuque county could be made safer. the d-o-t plans to improve the area along 20 and swiss valley road. thattarea has seen many crashes over the years. people living in the area say drivers don't slow down along "really haven't gotten too much input, some favorable some objections. it's both ways...it affects everybody, one way or another." the first phase of the project is set to start in 20-19 and will take year to finish. it could cost 26 million dollars. firefighters battle the cold and wind -- and rescue a woman and her two children. we first told you about this fire yesterday on today in iowa. firefighters were called to a home on union road in cedar falls. a five-year-old girl, a three-year- old boy and their mother were rescued... "we had some things that were personnel because their air mask started to freeze up and that type of stuff." we're told the children are in good condition - but their mother, ashley callee, is at the university of iowa hospitals and clinics being treated. she took in a lot of smoke. the home was destroyed. at this point, we don't know what caused the fire. now to another fire. an iowa family loses theer home and four pets. it happened in st. charles -- which is south of des moines in madison county. crews also had a tough time battling that fire because of one mom turned a hobby into a good cause.... she's giving back to a hospital after they saved her twin babbie's lives. kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in the newsroom.. she caught up with this mom. lacy tripp started croche-ing tiny hats for newborn babbies at allen hospital.. she used pinterest and youtubeto learn how to get creative with these hats... and the reason she does this is becuase of her two-year-old twins. "awww she's yawning" a superbowl croche'd hat with tiny pom poms on baby emma's head "it's really wonderful.." and a valentines day hat on kylan's head... "it keeps my baby's head warm." all thanks to lacy lacy-"this is just a plain hat for one of the babbies between holidays..." a mom whos crocheted over 200 hats for babbies at allen hospital... mom- "its great to know that there are still people like this they are for newborn and premature babbies.. "cmon honey" (video of baby) as well as still born babbies... lacy- "to me it's acknowledging that they are a baby to..." time of loss.... "i had six pregnancy losses..." a lot of loss until she became pregnatn with two twins..."they are true miracles in themselves..." lacy had them prematurally... she spent 50 days at allen where tiny hats.. helped keep her 3 pound newborns warm and well... "thats why your mom always teaches you to wear a stocking hat when its cold..." the twins are now two years old... and they're the reason lacy keeps "i already have some ideas for saint patrick's day hats..." lacy says she likes to have hats available year round... she makes holiday themed hats as well as hats babbies can wear in-between holidays. we've got you covered live in the newsroom... amanda gilbert... allen hospital just finissed handing out superbowl-themed hats.. now they are handing out valentines day ones. a training mission takes a turn for the worse -- for a paratrooper. he ends up stuck on a power pole. check out the video from florida. the man is a paratrooper at fort bragg but was in florida training. he was behind the rest of his squad when he started drifting. a state trooper spotted him and called for help. rescue crews shut off the power and brought him down safely. two workers are very lucky this morning -- after this happened. a gas station canopy collapsed in california. no one was seriously hurt -- including the people in the cars under the canopy. two workers were on the roof over the gas pumps. as they were getting off the awning -- it collapsed. another close call in california. a small plane crash-lands after losing power taking off. authorities say the engine failed and it started to come down after reaching about three hundred feet. the pilot was able to guide it to a swampy area near the runway. the week. a man loses control of his s-u-v -- drives over a curb, through a fence and into#a backyard pool in texas. a neighbor was able to help get the man out. he was not seriously hurt. it took the tow truck a long time to get the s-u-v out. a hot new restaurant is also one of the smallest. his morning, the story of a woman who built her business from the ground up. william joy got a behind the scenes look in kentucky. "can i have um, a crab fry?" it "she kept saying, we just went in a circle and i said we did go in a circle." it's called the seafood lady "there's not anything like it here" and that's her ... "it's unique." nichelle thurston is from florida "i never could find awesome, really good tasting seafood." so she took the last of her savings ... "it's a house made sauce... and it out of her house. "it was all just ona whim." it worked better than she or her husband expected. "getting off work and see two months, she moved to a food truck. "it't'made for at least two people." four months later, opened up the restaurant. "this is my first time actually running a restaurant. i think i've been doing pretty good at it." her secret weapon is social media. from posting pictures of her food, she's gained more than 20-thousand followers on instagram and more than 15- thousand on facebook. "if it wasn't for social media i don't know if we would be where we are today. between facebook everybody talk about the seafood lady, the seafood lady and then they posted photos of what they ordered and i was like, oh wow." it would turn into what it is now."
