Friends and neighbors created this tribute. From outside the ups facility it appears business as usual. As the signature brown trucks rolled in and out. How can you comeback to what happened . Reporter the memorial went up after police cleared the scene. It is a reminder of the lives lost. There are expressions of condolences and a drawing of a ups truck to think the victims. Ups employees say it is hard to be back at work. It is rough. Being in that type of situation and seeing people you work with on a daily basis and are gone. Reporter another employee said many workers called in sick. You go to work and now youre life is in danger. Reporter four ups drivers lost their life including the gunman. On wednesday morning jimmy lam opened fire inside the building. Sources say he shot and killed benson louie first. Followed by other drivers. Then he went outside and shot a driver. People have kumm to the crime scene to grieve the three victims. Benson louie was a popular volleyball coach. A group of players came to pay tribute. He was always there for us anytime we needed anything. Reporter this driver was considering retiring after 30 years with ups. And another who was popular with coworkers and customers. You get up and you kumm to work and you are expected to go home. And they are not going home. You can go anywhere and anything can happen. Reporter many people who stopped by told me they came to pay their respects but they did not know the victims. They say the senseless loss of lives compels them to show the support. A motive is unclear but we are learning new details about the gunman. A senior ups driver said that jimmy lam suffered from depression and was downcast in the weeks leading up to the shooting. Thats in coworker said jimmy lam was involved in a dispute with his ex girlfriend over visitation rights for the child. Jimmy lam did not have a criminal history by public records show he had at least two dui arrests in San Francisco. He was arrested for driving under the influence in 2010 and in 2013. A coworker said at the time of those duis he was not a driver for ubs but work for the Company Loading and unloading packages. Stay with us for continuing coverage. The data was published today in Science Magazine. Reporter the study analyzed the movement of the earth surface by the seasons. They found a correlation between the amount of water during rain and dry periods and the frequency of earthquakes. Geophysicist Christopher Johnson is on a mission. And his seismic cert started with a question. Could california earthquakes be triggered by the changing amounts of water and snow across the seasons . The study at using berkely and Bowling Green university appeared in Science Magazine thursday and breaks new ground. What we find is during the winter months the weight of the snow accumulates and it pushes the mountains down about a fraction of an inch. Reporter they looked at nearly 700 gps sensors throughout california the record the rising and settling of the earths crust. The weight of the snow and water throughout the winter months is pushing the crust and it is flexing. Reporter when heavy winter snowpack in the sierra and topped off reservoirs runoff in the spring it unloads the weight on the earths crust. A clamps together and during the spring and summer as the snow melts some of it runs off through rivers and percolates into the ground. With the rebounding we get and clamping. Reporter the data came from 2006 through 2014. And found the number of earthquakes magnitude 2. 0 and higher slightly increased during the dry summer and fall months. We are seeing about a 10 change above the normal level. Reporter the study does not have enough data to link the results to big earthquakes. Scientists cannot predict when the next big one may hit. Learning about the small earthquakes help scientists bigger pictures of each fault structure and his sights are set on someplace with a greater water load. A place with plenty of earthquakes. One of the next steps forward is to start looking at the hydrological cycles and seismicity in alaska. Reporter johnson said there are questions about other environmental factors such as ties that could impact the earths crust. Each study adds another piece and helps us understand the faultlines.
