California are expressing anger, frustration, and sadness tonight, it is a different story in las vegas. Fans there are already celebrating the move. They plan to build a new stadium just off the strip opening as early as 2020. While they were celebrating this evening in front of the welcome to vegas sign, ktvu joe fonzi was at the owners meeting where the raiders fate was sealed. There was a lastminute push by the city of oakland, the feeling by raider fans, somehow this just couldnt be happening. But at the end mark davis got his wish. The blessing of his fellow owners to move the team to las vegas. As you know we just finish add very important discussion regarding the relocation proposal by the raiders. Which our owners approved overwhelmingly. I think anybody who has visited oakland and play add game there in the last several years understands the stadium situation there was difficult at best. Reporter al of todays all of todays speakers gave lip service to fans who have been among the most passionate in the league. I have mixed feelings obviously. I love oakland and the fans here in oakland. I know theres going to be disappointment and maybe some anger. I just hope in the future as we play in oakland this year they understand it wasnt the players, it wasnt the coachers that made coaches, but that it was me who made it. Reporter as much regret that may have been expressed today it all came down to the owners wanting to make sure 750 million of publicly committed money in nevada made its way into their pockets. We think this will lead to more of a stable franchise. Thats the goal of all of news the league to have 32 clubs that are all strong. Reporter there doesnt seem to be much recourse for the city of oakland and its leaders, but at least one fan group isnt giving up. Well take the next step. Were already prepared to take legal action. We will contact the media and well let them know were going after you. Your raiders are going to go down and the biggest mistake they made. Reporter in what might be the oddest twist of all, theyre expected to spend at least two seasons still playing in the coliseum known as the Oakland Raiders while their new stadium in las vegas is being built. In phoenix joe fonzi ktvu fox 2 news. For raider fans in the bay area, the announcement wasnt unexpected, but still prompted a lot of feelings of both anger and loss. Our Team Coverage picked up with ktvus amber lee who is in San Francisco tonight. Excuse me san leandro tonight. Amber . Reporter thats right frank. Were at rickys sports bar. This is a popular Gathering Spot for raider fans. Many stopped by here throughout the day. A lot of people dont realize how close raider nation actually is. Its very tight knit. Reporter raider fans are look for comfort in each others company. Today my heart dropped, my stomach dropped, and im like man, i cant be at work. Reporter raider nation is like a second family. But with the team leaving, it might be lost. Were not just losing our raiders, but the family too. All the fans. It doesnt make a difference if they know you or not, youre all family there. Reporter this couple describes themselves as lifelong fans and 12year season ticketholders. Theyre going to lose their identity in vegas just like they did in l. A. Reporter fans say losing the raider is like losing a part of themselves. They blame mark davis, oakland, and Alameda County for not coming up with a deal to keep the team here. So much more could have been done so much sooner to stop this. They dont show any loyalty for the fans. Reporter just outside their headquarters in alameda, they would ebbs press their anger by throwing out their once treasured memorabilia into a garbage can. Raiders dont show any love back, im done with that. I would like to burn it. Tell them they were charged with arson. Im not going to go to jail to have a record over this. It really hurts. Why should we be loyal to them if they are not loyal to us . But im still a die hard raiders fan. Been given the middle finger as fans. Reporter in emeryville a familyowned sport, they are concerned the fans will be turned off, leaving the store with a substantial financial loss. Were very upset. Reporter the nfl requires stores to order Team Merchandise a year in advance. Now she has plenty of raider gear in stock, but more are coming in july. I dont know if people are not going to buy this stuff and it is really going to hurt. Reporter back at rickys, fans were trying to come to grips. And we are pulling the bucket list for those savings. Are you still a raiders fan in yeah. You just wont go there . I wont support them anymore. Reporter but they will continue to attend raiders games whether it will be here in oakland or las vegas. I have a different answer. Some say absolutely not. We wont spend another dime on this team and others simply dont know at this point. Frank, julie . Not every day you get to interview a guy in a gorilla suit, but we love them. Thank you. The anger and frustration was huge at Oakland City Hall today where the mayor said they did everything they could to keep the team. Reporter there was an absolutely viable shovel ready fully financed proposal on the table. Why the nfl made the choice they did is a question you will need to refer to them. Reporter in the meantime the joint Powers Authority that operates the coliseum says they will consider Legal Options to cancel the remaining lease in oakland for the next two seasons. Personally i would rather have them play in santa clara than some place else. This city has worked really hard and the fans, once again their heart has been broken a second time. Mark ibanez is here now. Seems like theyre all about money, not loyalty. Once again the people who get hurt here are the die hard raider fans. You could sum that up with one word that would be greed to live through a couple of these now. One in the early 80s and this one. There were a couple of parties in progress right now. One in phoenix where theyre hanging out and where the raider fans, they now have themselves an nfl team. And in the meantime for the raider fans here in oakland its another painful reminder. When you pour your heart and soul into one of these professional teams youll do so at your own risk as you have seen one example after the other it is these raiders, the owners, not only the raiders or the owners, but all of them are in it for the bottom line. 30 selfcongratulate congratulatory owners are toasting to themselves. Their blessing to go there to lead the city where they built their brand here in oakland. Basically to the fans, if you dont like it, well mark davis says you could have your money back. Giving them a deposit for those season tickets, they would be happy to do that. Not happy, but you know how that goes, absolutely. I wouldnt use that term the ducks, we are the Oakland Raiders. We represent the raider nation as we said earlier there will be disappointed fans and angry fans. Hopefully we could work things out and Work Together for the future. Reporter it will be interesting to see how they plan to come back to oakland with a deal on the disappointment as he said some anger as well. Whether he will come on the television station or goes on the radio, whatever he has not been able to deal with the media one on one for a while around here. Raider fans and their number one concern and about this Upcoming Season where it seems like there will be little doubt they will be playing at least for the foreseeable future. Will they turn out in large numbers . We did an informal twitter poll today. 73 say they will not go to a single game. 20 might have a game or two. And 7 say they will go to every game and whether that will continue on when the team is actually in las vegas. It will be interesting to see. The newness will ware off quickly. I dont think las vegas is anything other than a tourist town. Theyre not about tradition. I think they may get some new fans and fans will be coming in from out of town for years to come as you almost have the way i see it anyway kind of a neutral crowd there in their long term. I want to ask you about the image and the tradition. It has become a culture here where they have been built for years here. What do you think will happen to that brand when they move to las vegas . I wish we could have this conversation in about 20 to 30 years because i really think las vegas being a much smaller market, there will be some new fans that will be generated. But in las vegas as you said it will be a transition town, in and out. Here you have generations of families who would follow their team. Then youll have fans that are coming in from other parts of the country where it is cold in green bay. Lets go to the raider game in november and las vegas and make a party out of it as you will see their large faction of other teams invading their stadium. Maybe a light gray hole, thank you. Mark, thank you. For some raider fans there might be a sense of deja vu tonight since they abandoned oakland once before. The year was 1982 when the late al davis moved his team to los angeles. They refused permission, but davis took the nfl to court and won. Raiders left town, but davis moved them back in 1995 after 13 seasons in the l. A. Coliseum. There have been a number of other nfl news. St. Louis cardinals moved to tempe, arizona in 1998. In 1995 the rams left los angeles and moved to st. Louis. The following year the Cleveland Browns moved to baltimore and became the ravens. In 1997 the houston oilers moved to memphis where they soon changed their name to the tennessee titans. They plan to play their home games this season at the stubhub center, which only holds about 27,000 people. Then in 2019, they will share a new stadium with the l. A. Rams. Miami dolphins owner steven ross cast a single vote against the raiders move explaning his decision in a statement. We, as owners, and as a league owe it to our fans to do everything we can to stay in the communities that have supported us until all options have been exhausted. Two years ago ross paid for a 500 million renovation of the dolphins stadium. Our coverage continues at ktvu. Com. Youll find more reaction to todays decision right on the front page.
