feel anger. it is disappointing, there's no question about that. you can say someone is a good teammate, but it has to extend in all facets, what you're doing on the field, off the field, in the clubhouse. however you want to look at it. we've now lost a really important part of our team. >> i don't want to be upset, or mad at the guy, he knows what he's getting into. >> we just have to move point, it's pitching. bar toe bartolo colon will be missed, but not to the extent melky cabrera is missed. they're adults, they should know better. they're earning their living playing the sport. why asked the mayor what can be done. we also learned police are saying they too are increasingly coming under attack. ktvu's matt keller live in east san jose, where a vigil for the most recent victim just wrapped up within the hour. >> reporter: a mother-in-lawial remains here for the latest -- memorial remains here for the latest victim of homicide in san jose. exactly 24 hours after a man was stabbed to death inside this store. family members identified him as 24-year-old juan munoz. a san jose state student, hopes to one day work for the irs. >> today, unfortunately was our cousin. but the violence can be someone else's child. >> reporter: officers say they're being targeted on the streets as well. officers are being put through a training program to help them deal with the increased violence as the number of patrols hits new lows. >> our officers are out there for longer periods of time without backup. that is resulting into more confrontations with officers, and more injuries sustained by officers. >> reporter: these past two weeks, have seen 11 felony assaults on officers. 9 were sent to the hospital, including one stabbed in a shoulder by a suspect. >> the stabbing, in particular it is a very serious thing. that's something that could have cost the officer's life. >> reporter: the city announced immediate actions taken by the police chief, including taking all available officers on patrol duty. renewing overtime funding. mayor chuck reed told me the increased violence in san jose is not unique. >> we will deal with it. we have the resources. we're going to put the people on it, and deal with it as we have in the past. a great department, has a great track record in combating these types of processes. >> reporter: hiring another 60 officers with another 300 approved for background checks for the next academy. matt keller, ktvu, channel 2 news. in oakland, police say that a homicide suspect is off the streets tonight. at about 6:30 this evening, the ktvu news crew witnessed police taking a 24-year-old man into custody after a brief standoff. he had been holed up in the backyard of a hole at 18th and brush streets in west oakland. the suspect's grandfather told us his grandson was scared and didn't know why police wanted to arrest him. the east bay korean church of the nazareen is on miramar avenue in san leandro. firefighters say when they arrived flames were coming out of the side of the building. they managed to contain the blaze in about 45 minutes, but by then the damage had already been done. so far, no word on the cause of the fire. contra costa county is considering replacing the vender responsible for its emergency telephone alert system. officials say the system failed to meet expectations during the recent fire at chevron's richmond facility. it took three hours to notify 18,000 residents. the minnesota suspect had promised 20,000 calls in 30 minutes. county officials launched a review yesterday, and met today with another vendor from san diego. the 60-year-old man accused of fatally shooting an east palo alto community activist has been deemed competent to stand trial. a san mateo county judge reinstated murder charges against gregory leon elons. he is accused of shooting david lewis back in 2010. lewis was a childhood friend turned community leader. san francisco's embattled sheriff tells ktvu news, he is now more qualified for the job than ever before. but as david stevenson tells us, a new survey suggests that most people feel otherwise. >> a coalition of anti-domestic violence advocates today released a weekly poll of 500 san franciscos. the survey found 61% said ross mirkarimi should be removed from office. >> the people of san francisco feel that domestic violence is wrong and that our sheriff cannot continue to hold office. >> the poll finds 51% surveyed would be less likely to elect a supervisor who votes to keep the sheriff. >> i feel like the board of supervisors will respond to this and that they will be grateful for this information. >> this is political. a poll like that and the questions that are on that poll. there is no way to answer that poll, and not be neglective. from he cited today's online poll that shows substantial support for him. but says supervisors should try to be open minded. >> a sheriff who gains this level of respect in the criminal justice system is somebody who can be a real asset in making the system work well and better. >> they're trying to destroy him using the family. that is wrong. >> reporter: supervisors scold the domestic violence organizations that claim to support her. saying they never asked to hear her side of the story. 1200 pounds of wine grapes stolen out of this vineyard. who the owner think owner of a well known vineyard in contra costa county says thieves stole 12,000 pounds of grapes, and he almost caught them in the act. >> reporter: with all the vineyards around here, the thieves chose this one, with a fence all the way around it. tonight, the owner told me, he thinks someone with special knowledge of the award winning grapes in this vineyard is behind the heist. these zinfandel grapes were less than two weeks from harvest, when they spotted flashlights in their vineyard. >> that's someone stealing grapes. >> reporter: the 90-year-old says he drove down to confront as many as five men in two vehicles, but it was too late. >> the guy in the pickup truck, he had grapes in the back and he took off. >> you could see the grapes? >> oh, yeah. they had them in the back of the damn pickup. >> reporter: he counted 81 stolen vines, that adds up to more than 1200 pounds of fruit. police say they can't find any evidence how someone got that much out of this vineyard, especially since they had to clear that 6-foot fence. the suspects left behind a second vehicle, a stolen suv out of antioch, but police aren't convinced it's connected to the stolen grapes. it's the first time this vineyard has been the target of such a crime, since his grandfather purchased the vineyard. >> do you think this could be someone who has worked for you before? >> very pop. any certified winery would not be so stupid as to try to steal from a vineyard. >> stolen grapes are worth $1,500. but some say it will be very difficult to sell them to any legitimate winery, because they're required to carefully document their grapes. concerns from the centers of disease control that this could be the worst year on record for west nile virus. there have been four times the number of usual cases. experts say heat has been a real problem. >> warm weather speeds up the life cycle of the mosquito, and also speeds up the replication of the virus. >> pesticide fogging is scheduled for tomorrow evening in brentwood. the area to be treated is bordered by wilkins way, armstrong road, and brentwood boulevards. the fogging will be done by trucks and is scheduled to start around 8:00 p.m. ktvu news has learned the name of a man killed in a car accident on highway 101 yesterday morning. 43-year-old israel raina of petaluma crashed through a fence and into a power pole. he ended up dying at the scene. tomorrow marks the start of a new school year at uc berkely. a student is already implemented in a dui crash. >> reporter: it was about 3:00 a.m. when the car crashed into the dormitory. serverring a pga gas pipe. campus police say the driver was douglas perez, a 22-year- old uc berkely student. he was arrested for misdemeanor dui and hit and run. they've had a string of incidents involving students drinking too much. >> since august 1, i know we've had 11 situations where we've had to call paramedics in to do medical treatment on students that have been intoxicated to the level that they needed hospitalization. >> reporter: that's a big increase compared to last year, whether there were four incidents, and 2010, there were three. >> i know there's a lot of parties going on this week. a little more this week, because it's welcome week. no one has classes right now. >> reporter: some returning students say they've noticed the drinking, especially among new students. >> someone had thrown up on the lawn. it's their first experience outside of their house. they want to make friends. >> reporter: the campus health center does have a party safe campaign. >> when alcohol is around, risk is elevated. so be ready to notice, be ready to intervene. >> reporter: since 2006, berkely has required all incoming students to complete a three hour survey actually steal a portable building in oakland this morning. thieves crashed through the gate at the ab and i foundry on san leandro street. they only got about a half mile before the tires on the building's trailer blsays it se the thieves wanted the building's metal frame and copper wiring. >> i guess they were going somewhere to strip it, to sell it. maybe sell it back to us, because we're recyclers. i don't know. >> police say they are working to contact the owner of the truck, but so far no arrests have been made. governor jerry brown has declared a state of emergency in three northern california counties because of wildfires. massive flames from the ponderosa fire near redding threaten to overtake a fire truck today. the crew just barely made it out in time. it has destroyed 50 homes. the emergency declaration also covers plumith county. here's new video of the the fire. it is 55% contained. the emergency declaration opens the door for more state resources to a federal loan guarantee. there's no word on the sale price, but the deal does need to be approved by a u.s. bankruptcy court. it was a rough quarter for palo alto based hewlett- packard. in its earnings announcement, the company lost $9 billion in the quarter. hp is the world's largest maker of pc's, but is facing real challenges, because of slowing demand for personal computers. on wall street, the dow industrials was down 30 points. but the nasdaq gained 6. investors seemed reassured later in the day when the federal reserve signaled an increased urgency about the need to boost the problems. struggling again to break from the grip of violence. the 2012 homicide rate is set to surpass last year's total of 110 victims. >> there's been several games where we've been playing, and we've heard gunshots. >> reporter: just beyond the diamond, nearby international boulevard is rampant with graffiti, and prostitution. >> reporter: through baseball, the support of their coaches, and the strict team of firemen, these teens have avoid the usual urban hazards, and are on their way that seems out of reach for many oakland students. >> i'm going to college in solano. >> i'll be heading to pepperdine in the fall. >> the university of california at berkely. >> starting my first year. >> reporter: bound for college. just as all five seniors the year before. >> i'm a sophomore at howard university. >> reporter: chester living stone, and the other two coaches take a no nonsense approach. academics first, athletics second. they require a b average. much higher than most schools require. this school sports balance has helped push the team to a graduation rate far better than the school district where a third of the students drop out. in 2007, 379 students started their freshman year at oakland tech. by graduation last year, more than 21% had quit school. over that same period, 18% left oakland high. 14% never received a diploma from skyline high. >> i came a long way from a couple years back. today is a very special moment for me. >> helped me balance sports and school work. >> any just made sure we stayed focus, and made sure we did our work, and kept us san rafael, we spoke for people prepared to leave for this week's convention in florida. tonight, making yard signs. but this weekend, she will be working at the republican national convention. the student body president of marin catholic high told us, her parents are immigrants from iran. she's aspiring to be a politician. >> last year, i went to washington, d.c. for the first time. seeing social activism, and community service at that broad level. >> reporter: kevin spoke at the grand opening of the new campaign headquarters. the marin county republican chair will be attending the convention as a delegate. he describes the controversial comments from missouri representative todd akin about quote, legitimate rape as a distraction. getting republicans elected on the local, state, and national levels. they told us tonight's gathering is about like minds coming together to strengthen the party. >> we're a bunch of red folks in a blue state. we find comfort with our own. >> in the minority in this state. >> very definitely. but it was once a really fabulous red state, and it can be that again. >> reporter: these republicans say with good planning, and good candidates, the party can regain the strength it once had. they say their job now is to get mitt romney, and paul ryan into the white house. tropical storm isaac could rain on the republican's parade in tampa. isaac could grow into a hurricane. right now, people in the caribbean are getting ready for the storm. isaac's track isn't certain yet. it could hit the dominican republic haiti late tomorrow. and it could threaten florida next week. democrats will hold their con convention a week later in gop. their convention starts labor day weekend in charlotte, north carolina. events open to the public, and service projects for charlotte. california's attorney general is one of several women scheduled to speak at the convention. on their website, democrats make note she is the first african american and asian nation star acquired aurora bank, they evicted him without notice. they're calling off the eviction. the future of pro sports in the city of oakland is a bleak one. city officials and loyal fans say they won't give up their teams without a fight. >> reporter: the crowd at this afternoon's a's game today was small. it's hard to be a sports fan in oakland these days. the a's owner wants to move the team to san jose. the raiders may be eyeing los angeles or santa clara, and the warriors may be moving to san francisco. >> three really great professional teams to none will be sad for this community. >> reporter: but oakland officials, business leaders, and fans are planning a pep rally at city hall next week. the idea is to show support as the a's battle for a spot in the playoffs, and called save oakland sports. >> now it is our chance to do it. >> reporter: the coliseum joint towers authority, the landlord has scheduled a meeting tomorrow to discuss extending the leases of the sports teams. the leases of the a's, and raiders run out this year. the city has proposed building a new sports complex. >> we're talking about looking at building a new stadium. it can't be done we're going to see a lot of fog like this morning. and a rapid burn off tomorrow. right now, just penciling in what we've got. we've got fog already in the east bay hills. a little more fog than we had. the tropical moisture explodes out here, it's basically south and east of the yarr. that's the big concern right now, this stuff is sparking fires up and down at least the southern sierra nevada as this thing moves off to the southern plain. temperatures stay on the mild side the next couple of days. lots of fog in the extended forecast more fog. i think afternoons and weekends we might see clearing on the coast. the big story in weather is that there's a dose of it. it's going to be everywhere tomorrow morning. almost all nine bay area counties have some form of fog. at least cool air. as it burns back, temperatures stay mild. fire danger stays down. air quality, you get it. just a better set up. this low pressure center is the reason for it. slightly cooler tomorrow. a subtle change. it's been subtle the last couple of days. we've been dropping each day. but they're subtle. that's how it goes tomorrow. mid-70s around the bay. then low 60s, upper 50s, coast side. breezy southwest winds on the bay for the america's cup races. that's not bad. those guys can sail in almost anything. but southwest wind is not the most favorable wind for great sailing. but gusts sustained to 15 to 20 miles an hour. if you're going to watch, take a jacket. 88 in fairfield, 88 in clear lake. those are areas out of the fog zone. 76 in vallejo. forecast high out there in pittsburgh, 84, 87 in brentwood. five-day forecast coming up. it will show temperatures really just kind of staying the same. 76 tomorrow at mountain view. 60 in pacifica. the five-day forecast as i mentioned just shows more of the same. not looking at big time heat here. looking at mild daytime highs. there's the bay area weekend in view. you can see temperatures actually cool a little bit. with that cooling, we tracks of its first test drive. it rolled forward about 15 feet, rotated to the right, and then moved backwards. it took 16 minutes in all, nasa says everything went smoothly. it's mission is to look
