Reporter gasia, we have been coming to you all morning from old redwood road in the Oakland Hills. Were standing in front of where one of the grass fires took place last night. We found a spent box of bottlerockets. It fires off 36 shots. It has a warning saying it shoots flaming balls. Look beyond the fence and you see the scorched earth here. A little less than a half acre went up in flames last night. We talked with the homeowner. He stood out here with a hose until the Fire Department arrived. It wasnt long enough but he was lucky he had Defensible Space around his home. Fireworks are illegal in Alameda County. All fireworks have to be safe and sane meaning they dont go up in the area and explode. We have video of the oakland skyline from last night. What youre seeing are all illegal fireworks. They were going off nonstop as soon as the sun went down last night. Here in the Oakland Hills at redwood road, illegal fireworks sparked this brush fire overnight. The fire threatened homes in the area around midnight. Neighbors told the neighbors told the firefighters that they saw some people lighting off these fireworks. And there is also obviously evidence here. Meanwhile there was another grass fire in vallejo. This one started around 9 30 around callahan and turner parkway across from the Gateway Plaza shopping centerment back center. Back here, a neighbor said that not only the crowds but illegal fireworks is a problem. Dangerous. This is o i assume this is city or School District land. The city is behind on their job getting that cleared. You can imagine when the inferno went up, were right here. Our house would be done. We cleared our brush. When you have people setting off fireworks, were all at risk. Reporter that is one of the residents here. He came out while we were setting up for the live shot. He was taking pictures of the damage here. He is taking those pictures to his city council person, trying to get answers. Meanwhile we will try to get answers from the oakland battalion chief of the Fire Department and find out what theyre doing in terms of getting on top of the investigation here. But a lot of the residents telling us the crowds come up here and light off bottlerockets, illegal fireworks and leave garbage and they cause potential damage. You have people who hide among the people setting off legal fireworks. So its difficult for us to catch because theres a lot of people in the crowd. Here we have some illegal dangerous fireworks. Firefighters got a call about a fire on williams road near interstate 280. When crews arrived, they saw flames coming from the top story. The fire went to three alarms before firefighters confined the fire just about 4 00 this morning. Thats when they had it under control. They think it may have been started by Homeless People trying to find shelter during the holiday. This fire truck was reported stolen by the oxnard Fire Department in ventura county, more than 350 miles away. It was abandoned on kennedy street near cesar chavez. The Fire Department is relieved it was found. More information is coming out regarding a new York City Police officer who was shot and killed in what Police Describe as an assassination. Investigators say a 48yearold officer also a mother of twins was sitting in a command Center Vehicle in the bronx jotting down notes when she was ambushed. The man walked up and shot her through a passenger window. She was transported to the hospital but later died. Another officer chased the suspect and exchanged gunshots during a shooting battle. A bystander was wounded during the shootout but should recover. The gunman has been identified as a 35yearold man. But so far investigators dont have a motive for the attack and there is no indication that he knew the officer. Police in Salt Lake City are looking for a woman who drove her car up on to a sidewalk, killing a person. She hit a group of people near a homeless shelter. Nearly three dozen deputies swarmed on to the scene and tackled the boy who threw the punch, wrestling him to the ground. While other deputies pushed onlookers back. Motorcycle units sped in with their sirens blasting. Some took out their batons. After half an hour, the suspects were taken away. The fair will start up again at 11 00 this morning.
