This morning, under clear skies except for some of that fog. Well have a lot more 40s and 50s. It will be sunny and warmer for everybody today. Maybe a few high clouds drifting by the north bay. If you are in the fast track lane coming off 880, thats probably your best approach to the bay bridge. There is a minor injury nearby, west 80 at the toll plaza. Theyve been moved off to the side. Chp is taking a report. You will see it. And 880 looks good. We dont have a backup yet near the coliseum. 580 looks good. Southbound 101 and 280 are doing very well on the peninsula. If im able to move the map over here, im just gonna drag it over. You can see the traffic on the east bay commute is slow. In fact, its backing up from about 238 as you head on down the main part of fremont. After that it gets better. Lets go back to the desk. A car crash and fire caused a big problem at californias biggest katy, which opened just casino which opened just last week. The graton resort was among thousands of homes in businesses in the dark after a blackout late last night. Ktvus Claudine Wong joins us live from rohnert park with reaction from gamblers. Good morning, claw de. Claudine. Reporter good morning. The power outage lasted long enough to frustrate gamblers here at the casino. Take a look at the resort. The sun is coming up. But you can see the power is back on there and things are running normally. But people left here overnight, not sure if they would get their money back from what was lost in the power outage. Reporter overnight, the bright lights were replaced with this darkness and confusion. Instead of happy gam berrings inside gamblers inside, we found unhappy and confused people outside, people like monica lynch who described for us what it was like when the power went off just before 11 00. We were gambling. We were gambling. The power went out and everyone gasped and there is a lot of ticked off people there. Reporter a car verses a utility pole, that crash affected more than 3600 customers. When you include a casino among those affected, you also have to account for the gamblers. If you were at a table, you seem to be okay. This man took out a cell phone. There was enough light to cash people out. If you were at a machine, it was a different story. Back live out here, we have reached out to casino spokespeople who described this morning for us, this power outage very short saying their backup generators worked, but trying to figure out how many people might be in that same boat that that man we just talked to is in. Coming up in 25 minutes, the one thing that has really surprised the citys police chief. 7 06. Vallejo police tell ktvu a Motel Shooting case is now a Homicide Investigation. An unidentified 26yearold man was found shot in the parking lot of the motel 6 on fairgrounds drive about 6 45 last night. He died later at a hospital. The government predicts the final death toll will be about 2500. Thats a lot less than the 10,000 first predicted. Survivors say the food, water and medicine supplies are still slow to arrive. Reporter a crowd is expected in front of the Martin Luther king library in downtown san jose because a candlelight vigil is going to be held for those tawf victims. A local typhoon victims. Now, there have been numerous local relief efforts for those in the philippines affected. Students from San Jose State University are collecting nonperishable food, toiletries, baby supplies and medical kits in front of the event center today and tomorrow from 11 00 a. M. To 4 00 p. M. Nearly half of the population lives in california. A cal state east bay student says her father was visiting relatives in the philippines when the typhoon hit and flooded their house. He and family members survived by hanging onto furniture for hours. A grandmother lost her grip and drowned. I dont know how he is over there, if hes getting food, water, clothes. Just worried and i mean, im relieved that hes alive. But im worried about his situation over there. Reporter palo alto has a sister city in the philippines, palo, the city around 63,000 was hit hard by the storm. The palo alto daily news is reporting that last night, the city council devidded to donate decided to donate 10,000. More donations are welcomed at the vigil being held in downtown san jose. Police say there have been reports that womens drinks at recent parties may have been spiked with unknown drugs. In at least one incident, the victim said she was sexually assaulted. Uc Santa Cruz Police and city of Santa Cruz Police are now investigating. Police say to avoid this happening to you, dont leave your drinks unattended. Never accept and open drink from a stranger and avoid going to parties by yourself. A mother in el sobrante is warning for others parents after a stranger walked into her Daughters School and apparently tried to pick her up. The principal admits mistakes were made when the man walked into the Schools Office november 4th, gave just the girls name and received a visitors pass. Senator feinstein says shes received more than 30,000 calls, emails and letters from people in california who have had their policies canceled and are now facing increased out of pocket costs. Feinstein is cosponsoring legislation that would extend the grandfathered date so people who have the policies they like can keep them and former president clinton is the one who basically started the call for president obama to let people keep their current insurance as he had consistently promised. They are trying to find a young man who has been missing since last week. 20yearold derrick chow was last seen in the Bayview District six days ago. Grief counselors are at El Cerrito High School to help students deal with a classmates apparent suicide. Yesterday, the students found out about the death of falsto del gotta. He was hit at a b. A. R. T. Train yesterday morning. Officials say he took his own life. Its sad, you never know what people are going through. Its important that we communicate with our kids to make sure they are okay. Stats show suicide is the third leading cause of death in people between the ages of 10 and 24 years old. It takes about 4600 young lives every year. San franciscos bill for last summers huge fire in the yosemite area now stands at more than 36 million. The rim fire was the Third Largest wildfire in california history. It burned through hutch of the hetch hetchy system which carries fresh Drinking Water and hydraulic energy from Yosemite National park to San Francisco. The fire also threatened the camp which is owned by the city of San Francisco. A watery cleanup continues at the Alameda County courthouse. Part of the building was flooded twice. The sixth floor was soaked by a leak on saturday and water poured all the way down to the second floor of the Police Administration building. And two days later, there was a second leak. Repairs and cleanup may take a week and a half to complete. New this morning, smoke in the cockpit forced a Delta Airlines flight to make an Emergency Landing in new york. Delta spokesperson tells ktvu a pilot on flight 2921 from j. F. K. To minneapolis reported smoke about 5 30 our time. The pilot turned the plane around, went back to j. F. K. And landed ten minutes later. There were about 70 passengers on board. All of them got off the plane at a taxi area away from the gate. No one was hurt. The investigation continues. In the meantime, another flight had to divert and make an unscheduled stop last night. The cockpit windshield cracked midflight. Theres a picture of that windshield taken from inside the cockpit. It was an american Airlines Flight 160 from miami to boston. The plane only got as far as orlando. The pilots landed their safely after the doublepaned windshield cracked right in front of them. None of the 156 passengers and crew on board were hurt. The plane was taken out of fs out of service for repairs. The passengers got on another plane. It landed in boston early this morning. Still no word on what caused the crackled windshield. It doesnt happen very often. But it does happen. Once in a while. Yeah. Lets check in with sal and obviously, problems happen on traffic also. I have a feeling unless something goes wrong, yesterday it kind of reminded me something went wrong. We had a crash yesterday that kind of left everybody waiting at hole. They waited around. They had to they had to sit through slow traffic. This is highway 24 westbound as you drive up to the caldecott. You can see traffic is slow in la fayette and orinda. 880 is slow again. We had someone point this out to me that this commute is a parking lot. 880 is slow from 238 all the way down to stevenson in fremont. Lets go to steve. Thank you, sal. We have obtained dramatic video of a house fire near san leandro where crews discovered an illegal pot operation. We first reported the fire last week but have now obtained video shot by a firefighters helmet cam. Firefighters say the flames were a challenge to put it out because the threestory home is built into a hillside. Two dogs died in the fire. Firefighters say heat lamps used for the marijuana grow parked the sparked the fire. Teslas founder says theres no way the car will recall its models sedans even though there have been three car fires in the last two months. He says the models is one of the safest cars on the road. He claims the drivers were not hurt because the battery platform kept flames away from the passenger compartment. Two of the fires happened after the cars hit metal debris on the roads. Most of it seems to be north of point reyes and on the sonoma and mendocino coast. Theres still a little breeze in San Francisco. They are 54. A lot more in the way of 40s or 50s. If you get an easterly breeze, it might be cooler, quiet calm, not much going on. Clear skies for most except for some of the patchy fog. It will be sunny and warmer for almost everybody unless you are dealing with the fog. A few high clouds might drift by the north bay. Another quiet pattern which means were back to sunny and warmer even though we could use the rain. Dont see anything. I see a big wind and cooldown event as we head towards friday and saturday. We are looking at the commute thats really kind of at its peak any time between 7 15 and 7 45. You will see the heaviest traffic and a lot of times people have no choice. They have to go now. This is highway 24 coming up through la fayette. You will see slow traffic. You will see it in orinda and you will see it on the oakland side of the tunnel as well. Also going to see slow traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza. Again, this being the peak of the morning commute. There are no major problems. If you are driving to the south bay, i want to show you the south bay map with all of the red there, highway 85 is very slow. Its backed up from 87 all the way through into the valley and so is 280. We do have some slow traffic there. 101 is slow all the way back from 85 all the way through to sunnyvale. 7 32. Lets go back to the desk. New this morning, reports of radioactive chards still being found on Treasure Island despite years of cleanup. Ktvus brian flores live on Treasure Island right now with more on the worried residents. Good morning, brian. Reporter no question. They are worried this morning, dave. Good morning to you. We are on the western side of Treasure Island and to my right is an area that is currently under construction but it is blocked off to authorize personnel only because of radiation concerns. This isnt anything knew to t. I. Residents but what is a memo that states that there may will be radioactive pieces orchards on the island or chards on the island. Thats a concern for kids who play around here. This is a picture of a chard. In that memo, again, obtained by. Center for investigative reporting. It was found last march. According to the memo, it was so hot that holding onto it for an hour, could have caused severe radiation burns and hair loss. In terms of dealing with radiation, this is not new to Treasure Island residents. They say they were notified local officials perhaps during the time when the island used to be a naval island. Regarding this new chard, theres concerns from residents. The concern, lets get it done immediately. Dont put it on the back burner. Know theres humans that are living around all of this and get it cleaned up. Put attention around this immediately. Reporter the longterm goal is that the land will be urn turned over will be turned over to the city and the plans are to redevelop this area with pray grounds, reck rye playgrounds, Recreation Area but the concern from the residents, those need to be addressed before that can happen. Happening today a San Francisco sheriffs deputy charged with bank robbery is scheduled to appear in court today. 37yearold phil tong is accused of robbing a bank of america near ocean beach last november. Prosecutors say he made off with 1700 in cash. A separate weapons charge could be consolidated during the preliminary hearing. Tong was suspended after the arrest. A san Francisco Police officer is filing a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city. Lorenzo adamson said he was racially profiled, choked and arrested by several colleagues who did not recognize him during a traffic stop. He was pulled over on the Bayview District on may 30th for not having a license plate. He said the first question he was asked if he was on probation or parole. The city has not responded to the lawsuit. Four College Students in south San Francisco, they are desperate to find a new place to live. This after they rented a hughes they found on craigslist from a woman who didnt even own it. Here is heres the house here is the house listed for rent. The College Students paid the woman 1800 in rent. One day they came home, the locks were changed. They found out the woman bhe rented it they rented it from is not the landlord. We did home work on how long the house has been there. And she knew everything as much as we did. The young tenant said shes rented through craigslist before with no problems. Police say theres only a slim chance they will ever catch the woman posing as the landlord. The suspect is described as an asian woman, about 40 years old, with a light complexion, about 53 with short, black hair. Happening right now, top healthcare. Reporter tori, Oversight Committee chairman darrell issa says hackers could get ahold of private, Sensitive Information from people who have used healthcare. Gov. Were taking a live look right now at the hearing, where the chief project manager for the website and others will answer tough questions. Issa told the witnesses they were not ready and neither was the website. This wasnt a small or scathing mistake. This was a monumental mistake to go live and effectively explode on the launchpad. Reporter issa released documents this week showing where the healthcare. Bov officials knew where there were high security risks and moved forward with the october 1st date anyway. They did not test the website from end to end. He said website troubles are not because of technology failings but rather because an administration was willing to cut corners and meet political deadlines. Only 39 of americans they say they approve of the job the president is doing in the latest poll. 54 say they disapprove and its the first time the president s approval approval rates has dipped rating has dipped below 50 . And the Approval Rating of congress has dropped more than the president s. A new gallup poll shows only 9 of americans approve of the job congress is doing. Thats the lowest Approval Rating in the 39 years gallup has conducted the survey. Americans say they blame incestant gridlock, partisan bickering and the fact that congress isnt getting anything done. Were following a big power problem last night at california tea biggest casino which opened in Sonoma County just last week. Everyone who headed there knows traffic was a nightmare the day the casino opened last week. But the police say traffic is actually improving dramatically, the past couple of days. The police say theres not been one single drunk driving arrest tied to the casino. We asked them if they could make a last call at 1 00 just like a. B. C. Laws and clear all alcohol at 2 00 a. M. And they agreed to do that. City leaders say its way too early to determine if the casino will cause any longterm problems. Police around parents in the san lorenzo area are teaming up to protect children heading home from school. Operation safe passage was set up to help students who may be confronted by gang members, thieves and bullies as they walk home. Twice a week, plifs and Police Officers and parents are patrolling parents of ashland avenue and east 14th street as students leave nearby schools. There have been several serious crimes in the area in the past few months. Demolition crews will be back at work this morning tearing down the old eastern span of the bay bridge. The peninsulas major transit agencies are looking for a funding solution. Caltrain and samtrans have benefited from the improving economy. In fact, caltrains ridership has been at an alltime high with average weekday boardings around 55,000 people. But not all funds come from fares. A lot comes from grants. Samtrans has not been as fortunate in the ridership department. So its been tweaking routes and Service Times to save money. The boarding up of homes accelerated started about a year or two ago because caltrans was not renting them out and started to board them out instead of renting them. Perfectly good houses. Topping our news at 8 00, a fiery car crash that caused a big power problem in californias biggest casino which opened just last week. The graton resort and casino was among thousands of homes and businesses in rohnert park in the dark late last night. Claudine wong has been on the scene for the past few hours and everything up and running now, claudine . Reporter it is, tori. If you take a look at the parking lot. Weve been watching it fill up. Its business as usual this morning. But it was a much different story overnight. Overnight, the bright lights of the Graton Casino and resort were replaced with this darkness and confusion. Now candles are going to be lit here in front of that the Martin Luther king library. Thats because a local Filipino Group has organized a vigil to be held tonight. Now, nearly half of the filipino population in california lives in the bay area. The struggle of the victims has prompted many people to participate in local relief efforts. The san jose Filipino Club as well as fraternities and sororities are collecting food, baby supplies, medical kits today and tomorrow from 11 00 a. M. To 4 00 p. M. Some who donate say even though though dont nobody in the philippines, they wanted to help out. Were very blessed people. A lot of unfortunate things happen in the world. Ive been im able to give back. Reporter palo alto has a sister city in the philippines, palo, the city of around 63,000 was hit hard by the storm. The palo alto daily news is reporting that last night, the city council decided to donate 10,000 to the philippines to help with the relief effort. Theres a warning out for female students at uc santa cruz. Police say there have been reports that womens drinks at recent parties may have been spiked with unknown drugs. Police say to avoid this happening to you, dont leave your drinks unattended. Never accept an open drink from a stranger and avoid going to parties by yourself. A mother in el sobrante has a warning for other parents after a stranger walked into her Daughters School and apparently tried to pick her up. The Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office has increased patrols and richmond schools were told to look out for the man. Bad news for commuters on highway 101. The worst traffic spot on that road wont be fixed for seven more years. A new report shows it will take that long to get the money to build carpool lanes on the section from north of novato to petaluma. Construction crews are improving all of the interchanges in petaluma among other changes in the area. Now, the project to widen 40 miles of highway 101 between marin and sonoma counties, it actually started 13 years ago. Now to a channel 2 investigation. Bay area transit leaders are gonna meet today about a new problem at the bay bridge. Fastrack users in the far right lanes, youve probably seen the lane dividers. They were added when the new bridge opened to improve the flow of traffic at the tacoma but drivers keep running over the pylons and thats become a maintenance problem and a possible traffic hazard. It will be to honern the two officers killed in the line of duty earlier this year. Officers baker and busler were preparing to question the Sexual Assault suspect at his home when the suspect shot and killed them. A short time later, the gunman was killed by other officers. Some doctors are divided, split over new guidelines recommending new wider use of cholesterollowering statin drugs. Yesterday, a group of cardiologists and the American Heart Association announced that physicians should prescribe Statin Therapy to more patients. Even if they are still relatively healthy to reduce the odds of a heart attack or stroke. But there are critics who say these are not magic pills and that side effects have not been reported enough. When it was found, according to the memo, it was so hot, holding onto it for an hour could cause radiation burns and hair loss. Theres concern more could be found.
