Geronimo gonzalez was arrested and booked. State water managers conducted the final snow survey of the season and found it is almost double what it normally. The trick now is managing the reservoir. Ktvus tom vacar explains its a balancing game the likes of which the state hasnt zion years. Reporter most major california reservoirs are almost full and theres way more water in the melting snowpack than they could possibly hold even if they were empty. Our expectation is here for our total runoff that we will have two and a half times our average runoff this year. Its a lot of water. Reporter so that means dam operators, such as east bay mud, must perform a delicate balancing act of catch and release, catching enough water to be full by july 1st but releasing enough to avoid a disastrous overflow. The sierra foothills comanche dam. We have been releasing water at a rate of 5,000 cubic feet per second for many months, the longest in our history. Reporter thats the equivalent to four fully filled gas big rigs every second. The department of Water Resources says the immense snowpack spells danger down below in the increasing populated central valley. The concern that were focused on is the san joaquin system where youve got the four big reservoirs that feed into bankly the same channel. Reporter these days more of our precipitation now comes tin form of rain that runs off immediately and snow that melts much more quickly. What we are seeing is that were getting faster, bigger runoff events in the winter and the spring, and that can cause big problems for our levee system, and for our dam system where we have problems with levees beg overtopped and dams facing structural challenges from so much water. Reporter the drought left sotle water to run through our vast hydroelectric infrastructure, consumers paid a dear price for fossil fuel electric generation. Switching to natural gas from hydro power costs an extra 2. 45 b. Reporter now the immense snowpack pretty much guarantees electric rate pairs will save half a billion dollars this year provided, of course, that we dont have too much damage. The one problem is when that excess water can actually cause damage to our dams and our hydro electricity infrastructure. And that was one thing that did happen at oroville. The valley town of cochran between fresno and bakersfield is working 24 207 raise its levees. Tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. Well, and the takeaway from the story, too, 200 of snowfall in the mountains right now, the snowpack in many places. Thats like two winters of snow. Sort of the underlying thing here sin from structure. The levees, the dams, all this stuff. It was built tin 50s. So we put a lot of load on it and theres a lot of demands on it because of how we move water. No landscape has been altered more than california, whether it be gold rush or logging or water. The way weve manipulated the water has created an infrastructure that needs to be maintained. So whatever thats worth. Even though were getting a lot of snow, we should be getting ahead of this a little bit because were going to continue to have events like this where we have heavy rain, heavy snow pack.
