The soberanes fire burning in Monterey County is still growing tonight, but slowly. Cal fire says it burned more than 19,000 acres. Four firefighters also suffered minor injuries. Hundreds of people have been evacuated. Several state parks along highway 101 are closed. Fire crews say they are having a tough time fighting this soberanes fire. It broke out last friday. So far its only 10 contained. Ktvu ann rubin went to carmel today to speak to some of the bay area crews working in the severe heat to try to stop fires progress and to stop the fires progress and save homes. Reporter for crews tackling the fire, the conditions are treacherous. The vegetation is steep and the terrain is steep. The Alameda County strike team just returned from the front lines where they dragged 4,000 feet of hoses up the mountain 100 feet at a time. Its steep, rocky, slippery straight up and down. In Southern California firefighters are making progress on a huge wildfire thats burning in los angeles county. Authorities say the sand fire in Santa Clarita has grown to 5,900square miles. Right now they have it about 25 contained up from 10 yesterday. Tens of thousands of evacuees were also allowed home last night, but a few areas are still under evacuation orders. At least 18 homes have been destroyed. The heavy smoke from the fire in Monterey County is drifting north. You may have noticed it. Its affecting air quality around the bay area. Air quality officials have issued another spare the air alert day for tomorrow. People are advised to limit Outdoor Activities especially if they have breathing problems.
