But all that snow can also be dangerous. State officials are warning that as the weather warms up the melting snow could lead to flooded rivers downstream. Some reservoir levels are now being lowered to handle what is expected to be heavy runoff. Those who have to manage the snowpack and the water that flows from it are kind of playing a balancing game the likes of which they havent seen in years. Ktvus tom vacar joins us from the newsroom. Reporter the merced river is going to reach flood stage in yosemite by wednesday. Minor flooding is expected on the truckee river. The kern river is being watched carefully. We are just at the beginning of the melt. Most major california reservoirs are almost full and there is way more water in the melting snowpack than they could possibly hold even if they were empty. Our expectation this year for our total runoff is that we will have two and a half times our average runoff this year. It is a lot of water. So that means dam operators, such as east bay mud, must perform a delicate balancing act of catch and release, catching enough water to be full by july 1st but releasing enough to avoid a disastrous overflow. Example. Comanche dam. We have been releasing water at a rate of 5,000 cubic feet per second for many months, the longest in our history. Thats the equivalent to four fully filled gas big rigs every second. The department of Water Resources says the immense snowpack spells danger down below in the populated central valley. The concern that were focused on is the san joaquin system where youve got the four big reservoirs that all feed in to bankly the same river channel. Reporter these days more of our precipitation now comes in the form of rain that runs off immediately and snow that melts much more quickly. What we are seeing is that were getting faster, bigger runoff events in the winter and the spring, and that can cause big problems for our levee system and for our dam system where we have problems with levees being overtopped and dams facing structural challenges. Reporter the drought left so little water to run through our infrastructure consumers paid a dear price for fossil fuel electric generation and the pollution that caused. Switching to natural gas from hydro power cost californians an extra 2. 45 b. Reporter now tim mens snowpack pretty much guarantees electric ratepayers will save half a billion dollars this year provided, of course, that we dont have too much damage. The one problem is when that excess water can actually cause damage to our dams and our infrastructure. That was one thing that did happen at oroville dam. Reporter the valley town system is working 24 7 to prepare. Lets gate first check of the weather now. A beautiful warm day. Were talking about rising temperatures. Its a concern for people with the water melting but you said it doesnt melt really fast. If we get a warm rain, and julie and i were talking about in this the break, it is going to start to flood and there can be major issues. As it is now, its hot, its typical. Whats not typical is 200 of water content in the snowpack. The rivers are going to run high. Swimming will be hazardous thats next few months. Butt should go down. Weve done this before, back in the 80s and the 1800s. As you look outside weve got a few clouds. Those are all to the north. More High Pressure in the forecast, more sink eight, more warming air, increasing temperatures, and more winds that are kind of clock a little bit like this. Look at these numbers. 88 in concord. Warmer than yesterday. Yesterday was warm. 10 degrees warmer in santa rose sacks, 14 degrees warmer in no vat tomorrow. 12 in mountain view. Maybe a little warmer tomorrow. Winds are northnorthwest. Weve got a few westerly winds at the surface but most of the winds are generally north northeast. Thats giving us this compressional heating. So you cant seat here but the air is being pressed down. It gets pushed out. Thats why there is no fog at the gate. Those winds begin to good offshore. Thats where we are. As you look at the forecast for tomorrow, no fog. The fog will be back on tuesday. But tomorrow no fog. If this is fog, it is staying well offshore because the winds are going that way. Temperatures, the reds are 90s. Plenty of 80s and low 90s tomorrow especially out towards napa, fair field, and concord. None of this is crazy, but we just havent had that much. Weve had a lot of inclement weather. Here we are, first day of may, temperatures in the 90s. It is a nice looking forecast for your bay area tomorrow, and again with the snow melt, theres a lot of snow. The worstcase scenario, it is going to get warm. The melts will be its got to go through those layers. If it doesnt rain, if we get a warm rain, then weve got trouble. Right now we dont see anything like that. It sure heated up today. Eight degrees warmer than yesterday. The warriors are now expecting coach steve kerr to miss the entire nba playoffs.
