Late friday night as it maneuvered off the Golden Gate Bridge as it was departing in frightfully bad conditions. Weather conditions on scene at that time were pretty rough. We had 29mileperhour winds and 19foot seas so even for a large ship it was pretty rough out there. Debris from yet another container has been spotted off the pacific of maurys point. Debris we shot here from our helicopter, debris that now must also be dealt with and cleaned up. But again, missing 10 other containers, whereabouts unknown. Under the waves but not too far in to the waves they could present a real potential danger. Tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. The containers, are those typically secured to the ships deck or each other . The lower three are connected to the deck. The lowest one most connected. Then as they go up theyre connected by things called pineapples. These are very rigid devices but in really extreme weather conditions, if the boat tips too much. If the winds are too high and all of that, it is a potential that they can fall off. Doesnt happen very often. More often these containers fall off while being loaded and unloaded at the port but having said that, there are examples of containers washing off ships throughout the world in really bad storms such as hurricanes and this is apparently what happened here. A full investigation by the federal Maritime Administration will ultimately find the cause of the accident. Tom, just to be clear, this particular company, theyre responsible for the cleanup and the cost of it . Yeah, matsen is responsible for the containers, for the cost of the cleanup, for the cost of any environmental damage that its done. And if the other containers can be located and are retrievable, theyre responsible for that. Dropping 12 containers is one thing. The aftermath is going to be way, way, way more expensive than even the containers let alone what might have been lost had they been full. Tom vacar live in San Francisco. Thank you. Other news were following in San Francisco, police say they arrested a driver who struck and killed a 63yearold bicyclist this morning in the citys portola neighborhood. 26yearold erick mendez is accused of speeding and driving on the wrong side of the street. He faces charges of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Mendez remained on the scene and attempted to help the victim. The crash was captured on surveillance video. Police say the cyclist was wearing a helmet and reflective gear. He died at the scene. Investigators say neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been a factor in the crash. In south san jose, a bicyclist there was hit and killed in her neighborhood this morning. That was around 8 00. The car and bicyclist collided near chenoweth avenue. She did not survive. It did not appear speed was a factor at this point. It appears to be a tragic accident. Police say the bicyclist is in her early 50s but they are not releasing her name. They add the driver stayed there on the scene and criminal charges are unlikely. An east bay neighborhood on alert after an attempted kidnapping over the weekend. Alex savidge was in the community when it happened and explains who police are looking for. This girl did the right thing. She put up a fight as this man was trying to force her in to his pickup truck. Neighbors heard the commotion outside and they called for help and the girl was able to escape. This attempted kidnapping happened just after 11 00 on saturday night. Here in albany the teenage girl was walking along nielson street near sonoma avenue. Thats when Albany Police say a man in a parked pickup got out and tried to get this girl in to the truck. She fought back and caused a commotion. The man then drove off. Police say theyre now looking for that white pickup truck. Its apparently in good condition. There were some items in the bed of the truck according to investigators and at the time of the attempted kidnapping there was also a second person inside that truck. No description on that person but police say the man who grabbed the girl on saturday night is described as being hispanic in his early 40s, about 58 with dark hair and a short stubble beard. If anybody has any information on this attempted kidnapping, put in a call to Albany Police. President obama has announced new steps in the war against isis. The president says he is sending defense secretary ash carter to the middle east to determine what more needs to be done to stop the jihadist group. Our fighters have beennes the pace of air strikes, nearly 9,000 as of today. Been increasing the pace of air strikes. President obama said the u. S. And its allies have already taken out many leaders, financeers and recruiters of the terror group. Since this summer, isil has not had a single successful major offensive operation on the ground in either syria or iraq. The president said Islamic State fighters have lost about 40 of Populated Areas they once controlled in iraq and have also lost thousands of square miles of territory in syria. He added the secretary of state john kerry will be in russia tomorrow to work toward ending syrias bloody civil war. The army announced Sergeant Bowe bergdahl will receive the highest level of court martial. He was held captive for five years before he was released as part of a prisoner swap involving detainees in guantanamo bay. The 29yearold faces charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. The misbehavior charge was filed for endangering troops who were sent to search for bergdahl after he disappeared. If convicted he could get life in prison on that charge and up to five years for desertion. Turning now to the 2016 president ial race. Today gop hopeful Carly Fiorina was in palo alto to raise money for her campaign. The event was not open to the public but ticket prices ranged from 500 to 2700 which included a photo for those who wanted it with the president ial hopeful. Her visit comes as new polling numbers show senator ted cruz leading in iowa. Its a big shift in the race where trump has held a lead for months. This weekend trump began taking aim at cruz reputation in the senate, calling him a little bit of a maniac. Some republican analysts say cruz is hoping to pick up some of trumps supporters. Cruz will win iowa. This has been building for a while and trump is going to have to deal with the fact hes based his entire campaign on im leading the polls, im winning the polls, therefore im the winner. You can make notes. Kind of old school because its paper. Its actually a book, not electronically or digitally. Yes. I think its interesting that i had all the Digital Information in the world i created the book. One of the things i did when i created the book was i worked in the elements that i used to learn about economic events on the trading floor. For example, i used to always track the key indices first thing in the morning. When an Economic Indicator was announced i tracked the indices again and see how they changed after the announcement. Some twitter users may have been hacked and government sponsored hackers may be to blame for this. Twitter sent notices to a small group of accountants who were allegedly targeted. Twitter said it believed the hackers may be associated with the government but didnt give any further details. China and north korea have been suspected of hacking. Its the first time twitter has issued such a warning. Today the faa announced new requirements for drone owners. Under the new regulations people who own small drones and model airplanes will have to register them with the government. The rules apply to aircraft weighing anywhere from half a pound to 55 pounds. Drone owners who are 13 years old and up will have to register on an faa website, otherwise parents can register for small children. The website will be available starting december 21st. Drones have been a growing problem for pilots. Bard college released a study finding there were more than 250 nearcollisions between planes and drones nationwide in the last two years. A nearcollision is considered when two aircraft are within 500 feet of each other. The study found most of the drones involved in near collisions were flying higher than allowed by the faa above 400 feet. Coming up, were introducing you to an organization that helps children with disabilities with the help of some beautiful creatures. Reporter the sunrise Equestrian Foundation started back in 2005 and here in Castro Valley every week children come for private lessons and Group Therapy and sometimes the horses go to the children. The mini horses actually go in to the hospital room up to their bed and they visit kids near the end of life. Reporter sunrise isnt the only group in the bay area to offer this type of therapy but they say they are the only ones who do it for free. We see kids with social, emotional, or physical challenges so theres kids with autism, a. D. D. , brain injuries, Cerebral Palsy, ms. Maybe kids have gone through a terrible divorce. Theyre in a custody battle. Reporter the demand is high and the waiting list is long. Because the group gives two years of free riding lessons to each child, it depends on the generosity of others. From the horses to the lessons. A lot of fundraising and community donations. A lot of volunteers. We have two parttime employees and everybody else is a volunteer. Reporter but they say they do it for one reason. Because it works. Lets take our hands and put them way up in the air. Show me way high. Can you touch the ceiling, stretching that backbone . There we go. Reporter 15 yearold peyton has Cerebral Palsy and will tell you it does. Her entire face lit up when she saw amigo. Groom him, brush him, take all the knots out. I like to brush him. Reporter and while 10yearold ileana never seemed to stop laughing when we met her, her father says that wasnt always the case. She was really quiet and reserved and laid back. And being around the horses and things like that has really opened her up. Her motor skills are a little delayed. So the interaction is bringing her more out and getting her more in tune with her balance. Shes a lot more sociable. Shes a lot more loud. Reporter and these horses are a part of her finding that voice, part of a transformation. Sometimes it brings a tear to my eye to hear how sunrise has affected them. I can tell you that weve been monitoring ticket sites like fandango, movietickets. Com, even imax. Com. Imax. Com seem to be providing the best experience for people going to that site, tended to be the fastest site to load. The reason we look at that is because its really important. The digital experience that people have is very different than the experience people had in 1977 when star wars was first released. You think about it today, people are using their desktop computers, theyre using their cell phones, tablets to browse for tickets, for all sorts of information around the actual movie itself. So because of that im curious, for studios, these early ticket sales help generate hype . Do they get just as excited about these preorders . Oh, absolutely. Because if you think about it, its just all generating the hype. All the news about the preorders, the fact that people have these tickets in hand, absolutely all lends itself to the hype. The simple fact of the matter is these sites are having a tremendous amount of traffic hitting them right now. Lets talk about the hype. I read an article, fans paying thousands to fly to paris to see it wednesday. People are willing to put out this money. Were looking at people with tattoos, people waiting outside. Lets talk about the merchandise, what some are calling genius Advertising Campaign thats going on here. What are you finding the most popular items . Or does it matter, they just want something that represents star wars . If you think about it, you have to have your star wars merchandise. So its going to be interesting this week but ill tell you what. Next week is going to be really when youre going to tell what the biggest hype items are all going to be because if you think about it, people are going to go out and theyre going to see the movie. They want to make sure the merchandise they buy is going to be the next r2d2. If this movie its kind of like a potential versus expectation. If this film does not meet expectations at the box office, does it necessarily mean its not successful based on what keba just asked you and thats the merchandising. Has it already won . Oh, absolutely it has. If you think about all the different product placements and were not just monitoring the ticket sites, were monitoring a lot of the companies that have product placements ongoing. Whos winning that war . Right now were seeing companies like, for example, dura cell right now is doing a good job. Just turn on the tv, you can see this weekend they just dialed it up a notch with all the ads that are promoting this movie as well. Thats true. Are you kind of surprised . I dont know if youre a star wars fan but from 1977 to here we are in 2015 that there is so much excitement about this movie that really for me my parents were excited about back in 77. I got excited about it later watching it here in the bay area. Ive got my 5yearold, thats three generations. I was eight years old in 1977. Star wars showed me something that i couldnt even begin to imagine. And the world we live in today is something again, i couldnt imagine back then. I couldnt imagine having the internet, my cell phone, my tablets. I couldnt even possibly imagine being able to order products off a device and its completely if you think about it, were undergoing this Digital Transformation that were just scratching the surface with. How do they keep these fans not only loyal for these 40 years, the last movie was out, what, 10 years ago . How do you manage to get this excitement for something we havent seen in years now . Or is that the reason, we want more . Part of it is obviously its a strong brand. And if you think about it, having a strong brand is all about the quality of the experience. The movies themselves are basically made to the highest possible standard of quality. These are big budget blockbuster movies. Six weeks ago we started this challenge. How are you feeling six weeks after . I feel good. I definitely have worked out a lot more in the past six weeks than i probably normally would have. Not to say i got to the gym as often as i wanted to but it was good to be able to see these scenes. Wed go back every couple weeks and see these scans. Very revealing scans, by the way. Too much for public consumption i guess at this point. I want to show you video of what these scans look like. This is video from the past six weeks of us going to the Sports Basement in berkeley. Silicon valley startup is taking on a new type of bike sharing using electric bikes. The ceo of swiftmile says he had his light bulb moment when he was stuck in traffic and saw an electric bicyclist whizzing by. He discovered half of car trips are less than 3 miles and 30 are less than 1 mile. He says the electric bike is a perfect way to make the 1mile trip easier. Ill just grab a swiftmile when i get off the train or bus so people can really use this as a true means to help solve that congestion and smog and pollution in any given community. The vta and google employees are testing the idea in a pilot program. The inventor says he hopes the sharing will be picked up by other companies and launched to the general public. Nasa is looking to recruit new astronauts who want to explore the red planet. Applications are being accepted through the middle of february. This is the first time in four years nasa is hiring. Quite the mess there trying to find those containers in San Francisco. A cargo ship loses a dozen containers outside the golden gate in stormy seas. One of them washed up near baker beach and another found in pacifica. Tonight the search is on for the other containers and the coast guard is asking boaters to be on the lookout. Green pallets that once held bread were spread along the coastline and crews were working to pack them up and put them on to trucks. The First Container was found to the west of the Golden Gate Bridge and this afternoon a second container was spotted at maury point in pacifica. Strong winds and rough seas this weekend are to blame for knocking the containers off the ship. Tom vacar joins us from the beach with a live report. I want you to take a look over here. This is some of the work theyre doing to haul this stuff away. The situation here is well in hand at baker beach but there are at least 10 other containers posing a real danger to ships entering and leaving local ocean waters. Reporter friday just before 11 00 the coast guard got a call that matsen seattle bound container ship had lost containers overboard just beyond the golden gate. The vessel lost what has been reported as 12 containers. Reporter two containers are reportedly refrigeration units. The latch down to each other, the weather was so bad and the sea so rough, some connections failed. The weather conditions on scene at the time were pretty rough.
