but when there is a storm like this you take it with a grain of salt and you live in california but it is something that you go i wonder if i should increase might earthquake insurance >>:now that there have been some money swarms and i have felt at home and at work is a little concerned --so many swarms >> pam :although this may sound alarming to some. seisomologists say, swarms are somewhat typical in that region of the bay area. kron four's grant lodes explains. >>:we have had four significant swarms since 1970 and some of the have lasted a couple of months >>:they are sort of these pesky little swarms >> grant :one of the biggest of magnitude 3.5 this afternoon and the tempo is picking out --up >> pam :you can visit kron-4 dot com to check out our special section on earthquakes. we have an interactive map and a list of resources to help keep your family safe in case of emergency scary moments for commuters tonight. on interstate 8-80. debris fell onto both southbound and northbound lanes of interstate 8-80. causing a multi- vehicle crash. the intial report indicates. parts of a chain link fence. and some unidentified debris. fell from the 23rd avenue overpass. police shut down both lanes during rush hour. backing up traffic for miles. two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. as of 10:15 tonight. the c-h-p has reopened *all* of the lanes. this incident remains under investigation. no word on what led to the debris falling. a health alert for south bay residents. officials have linked two dozen cases of shigella. to a restaurant in san jose. they say, everyone diagnosed with the infection. ate at mariscos san juan restaurant last friday and saturday. nearly all reported cases required hospital admission. and eleven people are in intensive care. the infection typically causes diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. shigella can be spread by eating food prepared by an infected food handler, or by direct person- to- person contact. the restaurant remains closed. for the second time in a month. a man in berkeley has attempted to get teenage girls into his van. police say, sunday night just after 6-in the evening three girls were approached by a man on college avenue near webster. officers say, the man tried to lure the girls into his van. but they ran away. the girls decribe the suspect as a latino man. in his late 20's. with dark hair, driving a dark green or blue mini-van. police say. a man with a similar decription attempted to get two girls into his van. last month. tonight. parent's remain on edge. as to who this man is. and when he'll be caught. kron 4's alecia reid talked to child advocate mark klaas, whose own daughter was kidnapped and murdered 21- years ago. she joins us live from berkeley alecia what can parents do to help protect their children? >> alecia :children that find themselves in a situation where they're being lured or forced into a vehicle, should do whatever it takes to get away. >> : she opened the car door while it was moving and just rolled out. saved herself. extraordinary. >> alecia :that's one incident mark klaas heard about recently. in the last month, the number of attempted kidnappings here in the bay area continues to rise. >> : if they can take your friend, or someone from your school, they can just as easily take you. >> alecia :klaas says walking in groups or with another person is a great idea. also, walking your school or bus stop route with your parents - while looking for safe spots and places to avoid. >> : trust your feelings. if something doesn't feel right put distance between yourself and whatever that is. do whatever it takes to make sure that you're not stuffed into someone's car, because once you drive off into the sunset, that's when the mayhem begins. >> alecia :halloween a week away there will be a lot of children on the street trick or treating. now is a great time to reintroduce the stranger danger conversation. reporting live in berkeley. >> pam :a gun was stolen from a car of a law enforcement officer in san francisco on sunday night. the car was parked on the corner of 8th and howard. where the personal handgun of an off- duty c-h-p officer. was stolen from his prius. the officer reported. he was gone from his car 20 -minutes. and came back to find the window smashed. and his backpack with the loaded gun inside. gone. san francisco police chief greg suhr, whose department is handling the investigation explained how his officers are told to store their weapons. >>:their guns are to be with them and if they have to force farmers and put them in the car for a brief. time is to be secured in the trunk or in a lock box under no circumstances are they to leave guns in cars overnight >> pam :because the c-h-p officer was not working. and it is not a department weapon. the c-h-p will investigate to see if the officer violated any policies. san francisco police have made no arrests. police release more details. regarding last week's officer - involved shooting in san francisco. it happened when police tried to arrest 27- year- old herbert benitez. in a town hall meeting today. police say, benitez. resisted. and managed to get one of the officer's gun. and then point it at him. police say. this forced the second officer to open fire. officers say, benitez had no criminal record or history of mental problems. he had been with his mother at the public library. just blocks from where he was killed. the developers say the complex is for the children in the area but many residents say it is a bad plan and make their lives miserable >> jeff :dozens of bel marin keys residents gathered on monday night to talk with each other and talk to city officials about the newly proposed sports complex t that developers want to build on hamilton field. residents of this community say they didn't ask for a baseball complex and they don't want it near their homes. >>:this is what people get really upset about is the 800 parking places right next to the wetlands. >> bob belicheck : the upper part of that landfill is open space and it's open space for a reason because it's a wildlife corrodordeer, coyotes, and bobcats, birdsit's a flyway for birds in that area. >> jeff :litter, noise, and trafficthe biggest anticipated problems that residents say will come with the complexa big push to keep the project from going signatures on change dot orgit's clear how these redidens feel but the developer says it won't be that bad. >> mike shapiro : i think there are a couple of reasons, onegenerally, people don't want any kind of change in their neighborhoods and the other reason is that a lot of the reason for the fears and some of the problems that some of the people are having are because they just don't know all of the facts at this point. >> jeff :there are a lot of things that have to happen before the project even goes to the planning commission. the environmentat impact report, for example, won't be complete for another six months or so. i'm jeff bush, live in novato, kron four news. >> pam :coming up. a clash between passengers. forces a turnaround for a flight heading to san francisco. showing improvement. the latest on former n.b.a. star lamar odom. who collpased in a nevada brothel last week. a teacher's aide followed her instincts. and saved a little girl from possible harm in the east bay. back. once back in l-a, police removed one passenger from the flight. no arrests or charges have been made. a courageous act by a local teachers aide. to protect a young school girl from potential
