Shareholders billions. And disgraced politicians seek forgiveness and a second chance. That and much more on cbs this morning saturday, july 13th, 2013. Captioning funded by cbs and welcome to the weekend, and good morning, nancy cordes. Thank you so much for having me. Its great to see you. We begin this morning with the murder trial of George Zimmerman in florida. The fate of the former Neighborhood Watch volunteer is now in the hands of the jury. Zimmerman is charged in the seconddegree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, but the judge has also instructed the jurors they can also consider manslaughter. Mark strassmann is at the courthouse. Good morning. Reporter good morning anthony and nancy. Jurors get back to work on day two at 9 00 a. M. Eastern time and they have to agree on a verdict that has divided america. Sometimes questions from the jury room give a glimpse into their deliberations. Not this time. This is in the form of a request for the jury. Is there an inventory list of the evidence by number and description. Reporter six jurors, all women, are looking at that evidence to decide between clashing views about whether George Zimmerman is guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin. Wheres one shred of evidence to support the absurdity that theyre trying to have you buy . In his Closing Argument mark omara claims martin ambushed zimmerman on a dark rainy night and bashed his head repeatedly on a sidewalk. That is not an unarmed teenager with nothing but skittles trying to get home. And the suggestion by the state that thats not a weapon that that cant hurt somebody that that cant cause Great Bodily Injury is disgusting. Reporter in his rebuttal, prosecutor john guy rejected zimmermans claim of selfdefense. He said zimmerman killed martin not because he had to but because he wanted to. He said zimmerman had hate in his heart. Theres only two people on this earth who know what really happened, and one of them cant testify, and the other one lied. Reporter whatever the verdict is sanford, florida, is like Many American communities, bracing for a possible public backlashsh backlash. Donald is linger is the Seminole County sheriff. We will not tolerate anyone who uses this verdict as an excuse to violate the law. Reporter zimmerman could get a 30year sentence if convicted of manslaughter. A murder conviction could get him life. Anthony, nancy, it could be a dramatic day. Mark strassmann in florida. Yes, mark. Rikki klieman joins us now. Good morning, rikki. Good morning, anthony. What do you think were the most important instructions that the judge gave the jury yesterday . Theres no question the selfdefense instruction is it. What i was intrigued about is theres also a stand your ground instruction that very few people have looked at in terms of their commentary. We remember stand your grown which means you do not have to retreat. You do not have to walk away according to the law of florida. Not necessarily to the law of other places. How significant is this jury going to be allowed to consider manslaughter in this case and not just murder . It could be the ball game. The defense fought very very hard to not have a manslaughter instruction. They wanted murder or nothing at all, and the prosecution wants that manslaughter instruction because if the jury does not believe that they have proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt, they could still convict of manslaughter. It also opens the door for compromise. Its a big win for the prosecution. The centerpiece for this case, rikki, seems to be this 911 call and who actually made it, right . I mean we still have i mean the jury could be easily confused as to whose that voice actually was. If the jury is ultimately confused as to whose voice it was and since they spent so much time on both sides trying to convince the jury that it was the voice of either Trayvon Martin says the prosecution, or the voice of George Zimmerman, says the defense, we have to remember no matter what your bias may be in this case no matter what your emotion is in this case that the doubt goes to the defense. The prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that George Zimmerman did not act in selfdefense. Thats a huge burden of proof. And do we have any clues as to how long these deliberations could take . If i could only read the tea leaves. I will say this. I believe in the serious is in of this case this magnitude, jurors take it very much to heart and to head. They were this deliberation for 3 1 2 hours yesterday. They decided they want a break. They are coming in on a saturday. They are sequestered. Theyre asking for all the exhibits. I do not expect a quick and speedy verdict in this case. I would think they want to consider sneefrg what consider everything. What did you think of the case . I love drama. I teach drama. Im a big fan. They amass facts, put them together, and use theatrics. I think mark omara did some great things with the aids. A fourminute stop ive never seen anyone stop for four minutes in a courtroom. It could have been to his benefit. Might not have been. Of course john guy god the final word. He had powerful emotion. He said isnt that every childs nightmare, to be followed at home in the dark by a stranger . Isnt that every childs worst fear . What you got john guy to do is put it back to this is a child and mark omara says hey, wait a minute this wasnt some kid just armed with skittles. And so you dont think this is going to be speedy. Do you think the jury has enough evidence to find murder in this case . I think that murder would be really tough to find in this case. I think the prosecution has given it their all, but i do think that there is enough evidence for a reasonable jury to either come back with manslaughter or to acquit. While saying that im one of the few people who believes this. I believe thoroughly in the jury system. I spent years in it. If they come back with a seconddegree murder conviction i will respect it. And do you think it was smart for zimmerman not to testify . Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I would never have put him on the witness stand. You heard enough of him. They heard his voice over and over again. They know what he sounds like. In cases in recent times, the prosecution witnesses sounded like defense witnesses. The defense witnesses sounded like prosecution witnesses. You never want the defendant to testify. Thanks so much, rikki. Thank you. Now to the still unfolding story of Edward Snowden, the man who leaked National Security agency secrets to the world and wound up with charges of espionage. Snowden is planning to seek at least temporary asylum in russia where hes been holed up at the airport for weeks. So far immigration officials tell the Associated Press they have not received an application from Edward Snowden a day after he addressed the media. After nearly three weeks of seclusion, Edward Snowden briefly emerged friday from behind guarded doors. A little over one month ago, i had a family a home in bare dice, and a home in great comfort. Snowden, accompanied by a wikileaks adviser quickly agreed to russian demands that he stop leaking damaging u. S. Secrets. Hes hoping it will lead to asylum in russia but his next move remains in doubt. U. S. Has criticized russia for allowing it to happen. Providing a propaganda platform for snowden runs opposite. Snowden accepted all offers of support or asylum. I have been made stateless and hounded for my political approach. I ask for safe passage. He wants to land in latin america. He has more help. Tatiana lieuucina with the rights watch. He looks okay but he cannot stay here indefinitely. The white house insists hes no human rights activists and reiterates hes charged under the law with three felonies a very serious crime. Thank you. The death toll has risen to three in the crash landing of asiana flight 214 at San FranciscoInternational Airport last week. They say a girl who had been in intensive care since last week has died. They have confirmed one girl had been run over by a fire truck. She had been covered by foam. They dont know if she was killed by the truck or already dead when they arrived at the scene. Reporter while airport officials were able to remove enough wreck alk to reopen runway 28 left friday, the announcement of the death of a third victim nearly one week after the crash is a reminder of just how severe it was. We have all done everything we could to take care of this young lady. Weve been asked by the family to provide them with some time and some space to appropriately mourn this tragic loss. Reporter 14 passengers and crew members remain hospitalized. Two are in critical condition. But for the more than 300 passengers that were aboard asiana flight 214 and lived a picture of the lingering remains of the crash. Edward met traumatized and disoriented passengers within two hours after the crash. They didnt exactly know where their companions were. Also their conditions were in disarray because they had lost all of their luggage, they had lost their monies some of them didnt have cell phones and so it was very important for us to be able to come in and establish some human contact with all of them. Reporter many passengers remain under tight security at a hotel near the airport where Asiana Airlines is paying for the rooms. Public Health Responders now report some passengers initial fear has given way to frustration. There was a lot of anger getting expressed about basically what was happening to them and it was manifesting in whatever it would be logistical problems anger would come up. Reporter we have learned some passengers have already returned home. Others are still too afraid to fly. Among those who are returning, a group of students the ones who lost two of their young friends. For cbs this morning saturday, carter evans, San Francisco. And investigation is under way in london this morning to determine what caused the fire aboard one of boeings new 787 dreamliner jets. This happened yesterday on an empty ethiopian airplane parked at heathrow airport. This new fire triggered a selloff of boeings stock on wall street. Mark rosenker is a National Chairman of the National Transportation safety board and joins us this morning. Good morning. Good morning, anthony. First of all, how big a problem do you think this is going to be for bowing . Well this is another strike against reliability, reputation of this new advanced aircraft. Theyre going have to look very carefully to fine out exactly what happened here and fix it quite quickly. Mark this was a plane that wasnt even moving. It wasnt flying. It was just sitting there. Thats got to be troubling to boeing. It certainly is. The accident accident the accident Aviation Branch of united kingdom, theyll be leading this investigation with the ntsb coming to assist as an accredited representative. The boeing folks are already on the ground. Theyre going to find out, i believe, what happened here but the good news at least for boeing if theres any Silver Lining in it right now is that it doesnt appear to be anything to do with the battery. However, theyre going to be looking to make sure that is the fact. The batteries are located much lower in the aircraft quite close to the wing in the rear and then also some in the front as well near the cockpit. The fire actually appeared on the crown up near the tail on the top of the skiff. So, mark if its not the batteries, its obviously something else. In some ways that could be worse for boeing no . Well the engineers are back to their sevendayaweek and the experts are. Theyre going the find out exactly what happened here and then fix it. Right. Officials have publicly said that evidence suggests this is not because of the batteries. You had the asiana crash, u another 787 that was headed to florida from the uk and had to turn back. Its a rough week and its obviously hurting their stock price. Clearly. The fire is the thing that clearly hit the stock, i am confident. But once again, as the investigation continues, as they begin to understand exactly what happened here i believe the boeing folks will probably be able to get this thing understood relatively quickly. It could be a simple fix. It could be a little more complicated. And is it possible if it happened to another type of plane, not a 787, it wouldnt have get the attention it has . A fire on a plane is going to get attention, no matter what plane it is. It could have been a typical incident that was controlleded and everybody got back to the airport and arrived safely. So the turnaround was something which, again had it have been another aircraft we wouldnt have even known about it. Given it was a 787 and there was a fire that day everything seems to compound. Mark roessenkerrosenker. Good to be with you guys. At least six people were killed on friday when some of the cars jumped the track. 2 x 00 other people were injured. The rail joint is part of the tracks switching system. Now to the deepening political conflict in egypt, which has prompted angry and sometimes deadly street protests by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. Theyre demangd the first free lie elected president be reinstated. Ire calling for his release from custody. Holly williams is in cairo with the latest. Reporter supporters of egypt ousted president Mohamed Morsi gathered in the streets last night here in cairo and other egyptian cities but the protests were much smaller than promised. They said they would rally millions of people. Instead they numbered in the tens of thousands. A sign perhaps that many people here accept the militarys intervention. Other egyptians may have been fearful that the demonstrations would turn violent. On monday more than 50 people were killed when soldiers opened fire into a crowd of morsi supporters. Mohamed morsi himself is still in custody and the u. S. Has called on egypts new interim government to release him but the government has so far avoided labeling the intervention as a military coup. It would cut off u. S. s aid to egypt. Its 1. 5 billion and it goes moseley to their military. Here in the u. S. Wet weather is forecast for much of the nation this weekend and heavy rain could cause some serious flooding. Lets get the latest from meteorologist craig setzer of station wfortv. Its over the ohio valley drifting toward the west helping to drift that moisture into the area. If thats not enough what was once Tropical Storm shaun tell feeding moisture from florida all the way into the northeast with once again the heaviest over the southeast. In fact fords forecast calls for a lot of rain from florida. Up into new england, new york. The midsection of the country pretty hot. Look at this. Dust storms yesterday in phoenix, arizona, from thunderstorms there. That possibility exists again today and afternoon thunderstorms typically kick up those dust storms. And in the midsection of the country it looks like hot weather with high temperatures above 100 in many spots. No relief in sight there. Some will see summer. Some will see sunny conditions. Thanks craig. Texas lawmakers have passed tough new abortion laws that will be the stringest in the nation. Governor rick perry will be there to sign the bill. 13 ayes and 11 nays. Reporter as soon as state senators opposed the bill opponents took to the Capitol Steps in protest. The new bill would ban most abortions after 20 weeks. Abortions would have to be performed in hospitalstyle surgical rooms and doctors would need admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. Opponents say the measures are unnecessary and the costs would force most of the states clinics to close. So when people say you want to restrict access to abortions, you say i say no. Im not restricting any access to abortion. The only part of the bill where im actually stopping the abortions is the fivemonth ban. Thats the only part. And i do feel very strongly about that. Reporter there are exceptions for the life of the mother and severe fetal abnormalities, but sara davis, the sole republican representative who voted against the bill wanted to include rape and incest. You could not vote for the. I could not. I dont think its constitutional. This is about politics. This is not about policy. This is about having things to talk about in republican primary campaigns. Reporter abortion restrictions have passed in 20 states with republican majority legislatures and could force to court to reconsider roe v. Wade. When we get to the supreme court, we will have inform authentication did havent 40 years ago based on the science and technology we have today.
