Kid kit in atherton asking in such a wealthy community how that can happen. Kiet. Reporter this all began earlier this year when someone made an anonymous complaint to osha about the towns backup 100kilowatt generator installed next to the Administrative Office in the late 90s before present day building codes would have banned that from happening. And now it is coming back to haunt them the problem . Its literally right next to the Atherton Police department right outside the windows of the 911 dispatch center. So when the generator automatically fires up and its tested every week, it spews diesel fumes into the Police Department. The deal with the diesel fumes . Atherton public works actually disabled the auto start feature. But that created another problem. If theres an outage and 911 dispatchers lose power, a worker in a town where the median home value is 6. 1 million must physically walk out to the 20yearold generator and turn it on. Why are you laughing . [ laughter ] um, i dont know. I mean, people just let things go and after a while its too late. You know . Just take care of it while its there. Reporter the man in charge of the generator public works superintendent steve tyler declined an oncamera interview but said on the phone the generator works well and doesnt need to be replaced. Tyler is hiring a mechanic to tune it up. He says the generator will likely get relocated if or when a new city hall and Police Department ever get built. Until then, they will have to do it the oldfashioned way. I think they could probably do something about it, make improve the situation. Reporter the 911 dispatch center has a battery backup that lasts 15 minutes and they are confident that in that time, if the power goes out, they can get somebody out here who is on call to walk out and turn on the generator so it doesnt disrupt service to the 911 center. And we have some tropical moisture moving in right now a decaying tropical system west of cabo feeding this particular low pressure area which will give us rainfall overnight tonight. So whats going on and what can you expect . Reporter a weed is defined as any plant growing where its not wanted. In Mountain View, that includes redwood trees. They are in a locale that really isnt isnt isnt best suited for them. Reporter back in the 1980s, the city planted rows of coastal redwoods along shoreline boulevard to create a shady canopy for people and cars. But now they have voted to cut almost all of them down. You see, google plans to construct a new building on the land right behind them and their proposal calls for a new bikesonly lane to run right where the trees are. But instead of selling that on its own merit, the argument seems to be that nonnative trees are just, well, bad. It does make things a little out of balance to have trees where they wouldnt naturally be occurring. Reporter they dont seem to have a problem with them occurring in the park including the one behind city hall. But at a study session, environmental groups supported the city saying the bike path would be good for clean transit and besides, the trees drink too much water and dont belong here anyway. Councilman lenny siegel disagrees. Simply to take out trees because they arent native, yet theyre beautiful and people are enjoying them, i have to vote against that. Reporter in general, the city seems happy about googles Development Plans including the bike lanes. But the mayor admits that without that, the trees would not be on the chopping block. We certainly wouldnt be talking about taking them all out, um, um, ah, right at this moment. But, um, ah [ pause ] you know, this development is going forward.
