learned about the deal.. yo neighborhood store.. and mo >> live from the cbs bay area studios. this is kpix5 news. safeway. it is being sold. tonight, what we just learned about the deal, your neighborhood store and more importantly, your grocery bill. >> betty yu tells us what is going on. >> reporter: customers should see lower prices and some stores may even be remodeled, but some experts are not so convinced. safeway is hooking up with albertsons. not because it wants to, but because it has to. >> safeway is pushed in the middle. >> reporter: santa clara university expert says this $9 billion deal was inevitable. safeway features growing competitions from wal-mart and whole foods and trader joes. >> it is not your number one destination. it doesn't have a brand. it is the other store you go to to kind of get what you didn't get anywhere else. >> reporter: albertson's parent company claims this consolidation will mean lower prices and better customer services and it doesn't expect to close any safeway stores. >> there will be closed st oars. there will be jobs lost. >> reporter: if that's the case, the traditional shopping center landscape could also change. >> safeway has been here a long time. and i think a lot of people would be affected. >> reporter: it is too early to say whether chris lahy who owns mission city creamery in santa clara should be nervous. some shoppers say if their go- to safeway disappears, they know they have plenty of options. >> i shop here because it is close to my house. if i had a choice, i would go some place else. >> where would that be? >> wal-mart. >> reporter: the combined company headquarters will be in idaho where albertsons is based. safeway ceo will stay on as ceo of this merge company. he said he had no immediate plans to make any changes at its pleasantton corporate officesful live in santa clara, betty yu, kpix5. >> safeway agreed to pay $2 million to settle a lawsuit that it overcharged customers. san jose stopped the camp stop won't stop bandits. they are accused of holding up 20 small stores in san jose. check this out. one of them fired shots of the ceiling of one store to show everyone he meant business. >> across the highway, he is moving toward the department building. >> reporter: chopper video shows the cops chasing the suspects. an officer spotted one of them as he left the store and hopped in a get away car. jesus beltran is behind bars. we are getting a look at the corner store the feds busted for selling not just beer and wine, but meth and cocaine. andria borba is in front of the place now. >> reporter: well the feds say this store was where they have been pumping drugs into the bay area for years. one man told me eight years ago, he was buying cocaine across the meat counter here. with a chain link and lock on the front door, it looks like it will be closed for some time. >> it sure is a mess in there. >> reporter: peering through the window, you can see a store tossed by the feds. >> the fbi, they came yesterday out here. yeah. i don't know what happened. >> reporter: agents were hunting for drugs. specifically meth and cocaine. they looked everywhere including in piñatas and underneath the vegetables. the store and three people were under surveillance and unwittingly involved in undercover deals with agents for a year now. >> alfredo doesn't mess around like that, but it is his store, so responsibility lies in his lap. >> reporter: the trio is connected to the caballeros cartel in mexico and the store was a front for their operations. >> i never saw people shopping there. i saw people hanging out at the register. but i never actually saw anyone shopping there. >> reporter: during searching that happened at the same time in san rafael, daley city, san pablo, and hercules, they collected three pounds of cocaine, 11 weapons, and meth. >> that is my little shopping place to go get food. and the thing that just absolutely amazing me is they are like family. they have just been gentlemen. >> reporter: in san rafael, andria borba, kpix5. >> all the suspects were arraigned in federal court in san francisco today. tonight, people in dublin are saying enough already. dublin has seen a rise in home burglaries this past monday. an 80-year-old was tied up and robbed. police and the mayor held a community meeting to talk about what they should do. dublin police tell us they are close to making an arrest in monday's break in. just a few hours ago, the oakland mayor gave her city speech. >> we have had four new police academies. they have been the most diverse in history. the most garage ration rates. >> she talked about the fight against crime and noted that california realtors named oakland as the top turn around city in the state. tonight, we took a poll and found oaklanders don't think things are as rosy as the mayor says they are. kpix5 survey poll says about 24% of people living in oakland approve of the job that she is doing. there is now a lawsuit over a horrific sky living accident that was caught on video. the san francisco man who took the video says the parachute was defected and he is suing the company that provided it for the jump. the chute opened early causing him to pass out in midair. he landed face down. wound up unconscious in the hospital for two weeks with massive head trauma and broken bones. tonight, the google barge is in stockton. it left treasure island under the cover of darkness. they had to stop work on the project because they didn't have the permits for the bay. it was sent 80 miles deep into the delta. stock ton welcomed the barge with open bars. work on the barge will resume. a live look at the bay bridge. lights are shining brightly again after a short blackout. did you miss it? >> reporter: this series of murders is sered into the consciousness of the people who lived here. we are hearing from the reno police department it was dna evidence collected on the scene of a murder there back in 1976 that now appears to be connected to five murders here. read through the old browning clippings and you can piece together the story. michelle mitchell was driving her bug when it broke down. her body was found in a nearby house. her hands tied and her throat slit. >> the crimes were all very similar. >> reporter: now the fbi is saying they have new evidence linking the killer in that unsolved murder case to five female murders killed in the same time cross-claim. they were all brunettes with their hair parted down the middle. all stabbed to death. they are named the gypsy hill murders. starting this week, a team of police and federal agents will fan out and begin knocking on doors near all of the murder scenes hoping this new information will shake loose old clues. >> potentially an individual that lived in the area, that traveled to reno. back and fourth, had business there. mentioned that he orache was going there. we are just trying to jog people's memories. >> reporter: in the case of the reno murder, there is now an interesting twist. a woman named cathy woods confessed and is serving a live sentence. the dna is not hers. but, investigators say that doesn't exonerate her. there is other evidence according to a prosecutor that worked the case back then including a man's footprints. >> there is new evidence and there is old evidence and i was always of the opinion there were two people involved. >> now joe, the fbi is sort of being careful with how it describes the suspect right? >> they are careful not to use the term serial killer but this fits the definition. basically anybody's definition of a serial killing incolliding their own definition on the website. anything more than three murders. here is the point. as they are trying to jog people's memories from 38 memories, they want people to keep an open mind and not think about a preconceived notion of what a seral killer might look like. >> thank you joe. the meat from a petaluma company was distributed nationwide. we know it was sold to retailers in 35 states, plus guam. safeway, walgreens, wal-mart, 7/11, just some of the chains involved. rancho feeding corporation in petaluma shut down last month. they are accused of selling meat of cows with eye cancer. they have a full list of the recalled products on the website. kpix.com. explosive new allegations out of the pentagon. an army lawyer accused of doing what he trains others not to do. >> lieutenant colonel joseph morris was one of the top prosecutors. he led the case in robert bails who pled guilty to the murder of 16 afghan civilians. he was in charge of the special victims prosecutors. the lawyers who prosecute sexual assault, domestic abuse, and crimes against children. he is now suspended from his job buzz a female lawyer alleged in 2011, he tried to kiss and grope her in a hotel room during a legal conference, on of all things, sexual assault. the investigation is not complete, and so far, no charges have been brought. norris has made no comment. the case sounds similar to that of lieutenant colonel jeffrey kruzensky. he was charged with groping a woman outside a nightclub last year. he was tried in civilian court and acquitted. he is still in the air force, but officials think he will be forced to retire. >> reporter: whatever the outcome, it will feed the perception that when it comes to sexual assault, the military can't get anything right. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. >> last year, there were 5400 reports of sexual assault in the military. a southern california man say is what happened in vegas was not his fault. he is suing the casino after he gambled away half a million dollars. the lawsuit claims the downtown grand loaned him money and kept serving him drinks. when he was black-out drunk. that is against nevada law. he gambled for 17 hours straight, had at least 20 drinks. >> i take full responsibility for getting intoxicated. to a black out state? no. i blame that on them. and letting me gamble and drink, i blame that on them. >> the man wants his debt forgiven. he is also seeking damages from the grand for hurting his reputation. nevada gaming commission is investigating. the casino is not commenting. >> how many other people have a similar situation after leaving a casino like that?
