Damage is to napa, buildings have partially collapsed. More than a hundred people went to hospitals for treatment. Few of them were critically injured, most by falling debris. Wineries are reporting significant damage. We have a team of reporters, starting with Laura Anthony. Live at the napa valley mobile home park, the site of a huge fire this morning. Hi, let me show you all the residents had this morning when the fire broke out, their own personal fireextinguishers. First they had the earthquake, then within a few moments they noticed their mobile homes, at least in this area, were on fire. Lets show you what it looked like this morning just after 4 00 in the morning. Started with one mobile home, where there was a gas leak. That one went up quickly, within a few minutes. It spread to the adjacent mobile home, and by the time firefighters got here, three were fully engulfed, in a matter of minutes. They didnt have access to water lines because the water lines were broken. All they could do is evacuate the neighbors here and then just wait for water to fight the fire. I dont think napa county or napa is prepared for a disaster at all. So but who really is . Unfortunately, we did have a major water main break just outside the mobile home park, which really complicated the firefight. We resulted, ended up going to get water tenders in to provide engines for the firefight. So it made things a little bit more difficult for us. And even once they did get here with the water tenders, they didnt immediately put water on the homes that were clearly going to burn to the ground anyway. They wanted to save it in case the fire spread to some of the adjacent homes they were trying to protect. At this point as we sta here, at this hour, still no water, no electricity for many of these folks. So even those that didnt lose their homes, have gone with friends or neighbors or somewhere else to stay tonight. We should say finally, theres some other damage in this park. Several of these mobile homes were knocked completely off their blocks or foundations such as they are. So theres some other significant damage here. But fortunately, no injuries. Laura anthony, abc 7 news. Thats the fortunate part. Thank you, laura. Now vick lee is live at the Crosswalk Community center. Where the red cross has set up an evacuation center. Vick . Well, this church is near highway 29 near the shopping outlets if you will. This is one of two shelters that the red cross has set up, the other one in valetio, and you can see people registering for the central, maybe some of them for sheltser. There are 30 families who registered, 83 people total. This is woody baker cohen, a veteran Red Cross Public Affairs spokesperson. Ive seen you on many of these disasters, woody. Thanks for being here with this quick interview. First of all, this shelter started this morning, right, as a play to get food and water. But then morphed into a shelter. How did that come about . It started the way they usually start. We open up an evacuation center, a place where people can go that have been displaced, get food, something to drink, some information about whats going on. We had Health Services workers for people with minor Health Problems or chronic problems, some Mental Health workers for the crisis. People came in, trying to figure out what had happened to their homes, whether theyd be able to go back, whether they could clean it up enough to stay. So it just sort of kind of went like that through the day. The number of people registering kept going up and toward the middle of the day, it became clear people couldnt go home. But theres a gym with cots so people can stay overnight . Yes, they can. People couldnt go home and didnt have other resources. So we set up cots and well house anybody that needs housing. We shouldnt run out of space, but if we do, well open another facility and have places that are safe for people to sleep. And always important for the red cross donations, people have come by dropping off food and things like that. Whats the best donation they can give you . The outpouring has been wonderful, but really were not set up for individual donations. So people with clothes, food, some of it homemade food, its very, very nice, but we scaled up and got people replacement clothing. Whats the most beneficial is donations. Were entirely founded by donations. So if people would like to donate, go to our website, www. Red cross. Org. Theres a link to donate. And advice for the public . Absolutely. We live in earthquake country, and this is another reminder that the earthquake, its not when its not if it will happen, its when it will happen. So strapping book shelves and entertainment centers, making sure you have a threeday supply of food and water. We also have smart phone apps, but take a few steps to get ready for the earthquake that you know is coming. Great. Thanks a lot. My pleasure. Again, this is one of two shelters set up by the red cross. At last count here, there are 30 families, 83 people total. Most of them, again, coming in for food and water. Some of them may be staying overnight, but its still early, its only a little after 6 00. So well keep you updated on the latest information from here. Vick lee, back to you. Great ton those resources are there. Vick, thank you. And tomorrow the city of napa will gather a team of 20 to 30 engineers to assess damage. Theres been considerable damage. City leards say theres damage all over, but striking images of bricks and mortar heaped on to the side walks. Its too early to tell whether the buildings can be salvaged or not. First thing, we got to get out there, make it properly tagged, make sure people can get in as necessary, but it isnt until we get engineers after weve settled here a little bit before we can determine the reasoning some of these buildings have had their problems and and we did see a lot of pictures, some of the buildings have suffered the most severe damage. The top corner of this building crumbled down in the quake. This is across the street from the courthouse in downtown. Also severe damaged. And again, as weve said, the good news, this happened at 3 20 in the morning, not 3 20 in the afternoon when the streets could have been packed with people and these bricks could have crashed on someones head and been disastrous. Cornell is downtown now. And were seeing some of the most severe damage. That picture behind you says a lot. Absolutely, guys. In fact, this has become a common sight throughout many streets. Its rubble from the earthquake. Its pretty much everywhere. Look at this. Nearly a dozen buildings in downtown napa have been redtagged unsafe to enter. This Historic Building is one of them, the alexandria Square Building suffered major damage. A popular restaurant on the bottom floor, office space on the top. The lefthand side of this building crumbled during the top, brick and mortar crashing to the ground. Heres video from earlier. It was a gold rush era building, recently retrofitted, but as you can see, that was no match for the powerful earthquake this morning. Across the street, the historic old courthouse was also heavily damaged. The Southwest Corner of the building collapsing completely [ inaudible ] i realized it was an earthquake and i kept waiting for it to get over, but it kept going and kept going. It felt like i was on a raft in the ocean or something, just a bunch of waves. But finally, i was able to get out of bed and made my way to the front door and turned on the lights and what not. No electricity. So it was complete dark. I was stepping on glass. Two hours after the quake, we saw falling bricks, still coming down off downtown buildings. Luckily no one was hurt. Ironically, only yesterday people packed the downtown area here, thousands of people, in fact, for a beer and wine festival. The power is slowly coming back on to the downtown area. And we are seeing a few lights, a few restaurants opening for dinner, and but this whole area, completely off limits to cars and to many people too. Theres a lot of police tape here. So if you come down, be prepared to step on the other side of the tape for your own safety. Were live in downtown napa, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. Thank you. Damage from the earthquake has closed the control tower at the napa county airport. An amazing picture there. But this evening that airport is taking on another important role. Jonathan bloom has that part of the story. These images those the earthquakes effect at the napa county airport. Shattered glass and sensitive equipment exposed to the elements. The earthquake blew out most of the windows in the control tower. The facility is currently unuseable. Its going to be most likely unuseable until we can replace the windows, which involves getting them manufactured and installed, that could take efrl weeks. The faa says the pilots will communicate by radio amongst themselves. And that can slow the system down, but its a perfectly safe way of operating. While planes continue to operate as normal, something unusual is happening in the parking lot. A brigade of blue bucket trucks from pg e. This is our staging area where we bring together our crews getting Additional Information about what sites they need to report to. They those the airport because its close to the communication center. We have two mobile command vehicles that are equipped with satellites, we have Conference Call capabilities, mapping capabilities. From here, they dispatch trucks and getting power restored from the outside of the affected area and working in to the center as more crews arrive. We look at critical customers as a priority, hospitals, schools, county and city buildings. But with its control tower closed from the damage, the air airport is not a critical customer. So theyre still running off a generator. By late afternoon, they had restored fraction to most. Abc 7s dan noise is at the first methodist church. Which saw significant damage. Dan, you got a tour inside as well . Absolutely. The church did suffer major damage, but its not over with yet. Biggest concern is that facade on the front, that triangular shape has come apart from the roof. Its now two feet, perhaps even more t looks like the left side of that facade has started to bow out more than the right. So we have seen some movement in just the past hour or so. So clearly a serious danger for people who might be coming along on the sidewalk, that sort of thing. The pastor has been here all day, trying to make sure people dont cross the police lines to stay out of harms way, especially in case of an aftershock. At first United Methodist church, theres even more damage inside. Plaster from the sanctuary ceiling has come loose, covering the pews and the pea annio. I could see daylight through the ceiling and cracks in the support structure. The eight to ten foot pipes from the church organ are scattered in a tangled mess. One concern, if the facade falls, the huge antique stained glass window will be destroyed. Then the pastor took me to his office. His book shelves were not secured to the wall and they toppled. Ive got a lot of cleanup to do. And im glad i wasnt sitting at my desk when all this took place, i could have had a concussion out of that. If the quake hit six hours later, the church would fbl crowded with 200 members there for the sunday morning service. And this is a live picture. These are engineers from uc berkeley, theyre taking laser maps of the building to quantify the damage. So they will basically take what theyre calling kind of an xray of the building to see where the damage might have happened and what may happened next with the facade thats been coming down. Joining me now is pastor lee. What have you learn kpd what are your feelings with seeing movement in the facade . We continue to be concerned about that fall collapsing. I just toured the building once again, this time with our Disaster Preparedness team from our northern california, northern nevada area. Theyre here not only to assess the damage at the church, but also the town, because we also intend to reach out to towns folk, to be of assistance to them. As i was going through the building once again, we saw some major cracking around the foundation of the tower, thats a concern. We saw some cracking on the south side of the building, again about midway up across the front of that building. And then also around the back, and we went upstairs and saw where there was a portion of the wall that seemed to be detached from the ceiling. So is there a plan overnight, say it doesnt come down until darkness or perhaps darkness, is there a plan to keep people away overnight . Because clearly something bad could happen. Yeah, im still hoping that the Structural Engineer will come by here and tell us something that will help us determine how to proceed over the next 24 hours. Because clearly, were not going to have any solution taking place for that wall in that amount of time. In the likelihood that we have another aftershock, that could come down and pedestrians which we seem to not have an effect on, walking across these tape lines, could get injured. Thank you, pastor. Appreciate your time. So clearly theyve been promising a Structural Engineer will be by. They said that hours ago. Thats the next step to figure out what danger this is coming down. Do you tear it down . Do you let an aftershock take it down . Or do you try to shore it up . All questions unanswered. Thank you very much. The quake caused significant damage at this apartment complex in napa. A car port collapsed on to 40, maybe 50 cars at the complex. Imagine if this was your car stuck under that mess. Inside some of those apartments, residents saw their belongings fall off cabinets and shelves, creating a huge mess. The fridge is kind of knocked over, the doors are open. Such a terrible mess there. At the whole foods super market in nap a food fell off the shelves and on the floor. Another big mess. Look at the extent of this damage. Shoppers tried shopping in, but were turned away by employees for understandable reasons. You cant allow customers to go through this kind of a scene. It would be dangerous. The store was closed most of the day as the mess was cleaned up. Nearly 200 people went to the hospital for treatment after the earthquake. Alyssa harrington is live at queen of the Valley Medical Center and has the latest on the injured. Alyssa . So far 172 people have been street treated here, many taken to the triage behind the emergency wing of the hospital. Most of the injuries are minor. Hospital staff set up tents to treat the influx of patients, suffering from bumps, cuts, and bruises. One person is still in critical condition. President and ceo of the hospital says they did conditions like heart attacks, but no reports of any earthquakerelated fatalities. In the morning, the most common thing we saw, cut feet. People walking on broken glass. A lot of folks who had furniture come down on them. Im here at the doctor because a cabinet came down on me. Im bruised up. Our hutch fell over and i was reaching in to try to get it, when i came out, i sliced my finger open. Thats one problem theyre seeing today. Many people like that last woman, have been cutting themselves trying to clean up debris. Also a 13yearold boy was injured when part of a fireplace fell on him. He was airlifted to uc davis medical center. We do not know how badly he was hurt. A few hospital workers also suffered sprained ankles and were hit by falling debris. Hospital staff tell me they train for this sort of thing and todays Response Plan did go according to plan. Did cause a little bit of damage here at the hospital as well. There were some broken windows and a lot across the street where some doctors had their offices. Also it caused some water pipes to leek, but nothing too serious. Alyssa, thank you very much. Wineries are in the middle of harvest season right now. So the timing is really tough for them. Abc 7 News Reporter is live at the saints bury winery with a look at the damage there. Were learning that the extent of damage and loss at napa valley wineries will depend on how far along they were in the bottling process. Here im surrounded by barrels that used to be neatly stacked inside of their storage facility. Unfortunately, this morning, they came tumbling down, they had to be stacked up here temporarily. The good news here, all of these barrels are empty because they went through their bottling process about a week ago, and so a lot of their product is safely stored in a warehouse offsite, that suffered little to no damage. Unfortunately there are other wineries that have not bottled yet. This is a winery half a mile from the quik epicenter. Their barrels were full when the quake hit and unfortunately, many of the barrels ruptured when they got rattled down. 50 barrels worth of wine, 3,000 gallons. How much is that worth to you . Its expensive. Its in the tens of thousands of dollars for sure. Its taken almost five hours to get all of those barrels down safely and were stacking them or separating the ones that are damaged. Probably, i dont know, 50 or 60 of them that will need to be repaired before we can use them. Now, this is a photo of the mess that richard ward and his crew here found earlier this morning. It does look pretty bad and the cleanup was potentially dangerous. No one was injured as part of the cleanup today. Operators here say that they dama dodged damage because their product was bottled and remains offsite. The Storage Facilities were rattled, some of them were even moved quite a bit. But fortunately for them, none of them were damaged. At this point, the napa valley vicinity ners association is starting to assess, do a survey of a lot of their members to see how much the extent of damage is for their members. Those numbers hopefully will be available soon. Reporting live in napa valley, im sergio quintana, abc 7 news. Weve seen a lot of buckled streets and damage done to highways as well. Wayne freedman is live on highway 121 where repairs have already been made. Quick work of it there, wayne . They did. This morning, there was a big buckle, 18 inches out of the concrete on highway 121. Its been smoothed out. If we look in the background, the quake fault was miles below the surface, but you have all the cracks and fissures that go along the surface. The crack comes through here, comings by my feet and continues for several hundred yards into this vineyard. Now at 4 00, i tried something and got a lot of flack from twitter followers about doing this, but im going to do it again because my bosses wants me to do this. This hole is one of the cracks, its very deep. Im just going
