Inmate about to win his freedom . One of the lead prosecutors in his murder trial weighs in in an exclusive live interview. Plus, a new Fidget Spinner danger. It caught on fire while i was laying right next to it. A teen swallowed up a flooded street. Before reemerging seconds later. And kermit, youre fired. After 27 years the man behind the famous frog let go. He is speaking to us live today, thursday, july 20th, 2017. From nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning. Welcome to today on a thursday morning. Glad to have you with us. The outpouring for senator mccain immediate when he got this news last night. Its coming from all corners of the country. From the president of the United States to former president obama, and all those people that have worked so closely with john mccain through the years. Thats our breaking news overnight. Senator john mccain, the arizona republican, one of the most vocal lawmakers on capitol hill, diagnosed with brain cancer. We have full coverage, and well start with National Correspondent peter alexander. Peter, good morning. Savannah, good morning to you. That news met with stunned disbelieve among mccains colleagues here on capitol hill. Its already uniting bitterly divided republicans and democrats in support of the senator. He is one of americas bravest fighters, and this morning john mccain may be facing his toughest battle yet. On capitol hill his political partner and close friend Lindsey Graham emotional. This disease has never had a more worthy opponent. Mr. Senator. The 80yearold mccain diagnosed with a brain tumor after doctors removed a blood clot above his left eye last friday. Overnight an outpouring of support from both sides of the aisle. President trump offering his thoughts and prayers. President obama, mccains 2008 rival, tweeting cancer doesnt know what its up against. Give it hell, john. While mccain recovers at home in arizona, the mayo clinic says he and his family are reviewing Treatment Options, which may include chemotherapy and radiation. Doctors have diagnosed mccains brain tumor for glioblastoma. He has overcome several bouts of melanoma. His wife, cindy, posting this wedding photo overnight calling him her hero. From his daughter, megan, an emotional letter that reads, it wont surprise you to learn that in all of this, the one of us who is most confident and calm is my father. Cancer may afflict him in many ways, but it will not make him surrender. Nothing ever has. Mccain, a former navy pilot, survived five and a half years as a prisoner of war in vietnam. His grit and determination defining his more than three decades in public service. That includes two president ial runs. I always like to move forward with legislation that i havent seen. Never afraid to disagree with his own party, mccanes maverick reputation more present than ever during the health care debate, but just last week his Health Issues prompting Senate Leaders to delay the vote to repeal and replace obama care until after mccain returned to washington. President trump sending his well wishes earlier this week. We hope john mccain gets better very soon. Because we miss him. He is a crusty voice in washington. Plus, we need his vote. Reporter the man known for clashing with colleagues in both parties. This morning bringing the opposing sides together. God knows how this ends. Not me. Senator mccains office says he will decide when to return as he consults with his doctors. It was his friend Lindsey Graham that broke the news to many of his senate colleagues. He said he spoke to mccain for about five minutes largely about the diagnosis before the conversation turned to other issues, Like Health Care reform. Mccains message to the other senators . Get back to work. Willie, savannah. Peter, thanks very much. Lets bring in medical correspondent dr. John torres. Dr. Torres, good to see you this morning. Glioblastoma. We heard terms like aggressive and malignant. I know youre not treating senator mccain personally, but generally speaking, what kind of prognosis do we expect . Prognosis is not that good. On average someone with a glioblastoma live 14 months. Five year survival rates run 10 . Not very good either. The one thing about this tumor, this brain cancer in particular, is very aggressive. Its very malignant. Again, it has that low survival rate. I read that mayo clinics statement, and it said that they believe they had gotten the tumor. It sounded like they had gotten most of it. Thats not the end of the story, as i understand it. If you look closely at the statement, they got the tumor that they could see. The problem is theres parts of it they cant see. Microscopic parts. If those are left behind, which unfortunately they usually are because theyre hard to get, they grow as well. This is a fastgrowing tumor and its aggressive, and typically it comes back. Its very hard to treat. As peter said, senator mccain has a history of melanoma. He has had several cases to it. Could there be a connection between the two . There are some thoughts that those two are connected genetically in rare cases. More than likely these are two different types of cancers he has, which is not unusual for somebody at his age that has had cancer before. The next part is radiation treatment and then chemotherapy on top of that. The problem is with those two, the radiation and chemotherapy, they can take a toll on his health. They might do radiation and hold off on chemo or might do both. It just depends. Some theres a moment where senator mccain asked a question that was meandering and confused comey himself. Senator mccain even joked later and said im sorry, i was up too late watching the diamondbacks game. Can there be a connection there . There could be a connection. This brain tumor was in the frontal lobe. That part of the brain is responsible for a lot of things, including memory, language, Decision Making. Its usual logical i a sign. Confusion, headaches, weakness. Those kinds of things. That is what clues them in to get a cat scan. I think thats probably what happened in this case. Our well wishes to senator mccain and his family. Dr. Torres, thank you so much. Thank you, doctor. A lot more to get to this morning, including an explosive new interview with the president. The commander in chief sounding off on a wide range of issues and lashing out against his own attorney general. Nbc White House Correspondent Kristen Welker with more on that. Kristen, good morning. Savannah, good morning to you. The president s interview with the New York Times covers everything from domestic to foreign policy. The biggest bombshell, he takes sharp aim at his attorney general. Overnight President Trump speaking out against one of his earliest supporters in an interview with the New York Times, the president said he never would have appointed jeff sessio sessions. He recuses himself from the russia investigation. The times Jeff Sessions takes the job, gets into the job. I then have which, frankly, i think is very unfair to the president. How do you take a job and then recuse yourself . If he would have recused himself before the job, i would have said thanks, jeff, but i cant. On james comey, he is accusing the fired fbi director of trying to leverage a dossier of damaging information to keep his job. Mr. Trump also warning special Counsel Robert Mueller that he would cross a red line if he would try to delve into trump Family Finances unrelated to russia. Would that be a breach . I would say yes. By the way, i would say i dont i mean, its possible. I saw a lot of condo units, and somebody from russia buys a condo. Who knows . I dont make money from russia. The unfiltered comments ahead of a triple header on capitol hill next week. First the president s soninlaw, jared kushner, to be interviewed monday behind closed doors by Senate Intelligence Committee Staff members. On wednesday donald trump jr. And Paul Manaforts turn invited to testify before a separate senate committee. No word yet whether theyll appear, but leading senators are threatening to subpoena the man if they dont volunteer to attend. All three attending that highly krut niez scrutinized pitched as a promise of dirt about hillary clinton. At the capital overnight Senate Republicans hud willing in a last ditch effort to revive their bid to overhaul obama care. Were going to keep talking if we reach agreement. President trump earlier delivering this stern message. We shouldnt leave town until this is complete. Were very close. The president s latest push, punctuating 72 hours of political whiplash. First touting repeal and replace. Then wee peel only. Just let obama care fail. Then by wednesday back to square one. We have to repeal and replace obama care. As for the president s comments about Jeff Sessions, the attorney general hasnt responded, but right now he is holding a previously scheduled press conference where so far he has been discussing opioids and prescription drugs. This is a live picture. Mr. Trump also telling the New York Times he doesnt think he is under investigation. Sav al ariana and willie. All right. Kristen welker at the white house for us. Thank you. Thats the medium security prison where he is currently serving up to 33 years sentence for a 2007 kidnapping and Armed Robbery in las vegas. Nbc news will broadcast the hearing live, and we know that a decision will be announced today. Lets get right to Nbcs Joe Fryer standing by at the correctional facility with the very latest. Joe, good morning to you. Good morning, savannah and willie. O. J. Simpson is hours away from learning his future. Will he walk out of prison in october, or will he stay behind bars longer . It is the latest high profile chapter in a life that is captivated the public for decades. One of the robbery victims Bruce Fromong who plans to tell the board that simpson should be released. The four commissioners will then deliberate privately for about 20 minutes before voting publicly. If they dont reach a unanimous verdict, theyll immediately contact two additional commissioners to win his release needs at least four to vote yes, which many legal observers say is likely. I am sorry for what has happened. During his last hearing in 2013 simpson expressed regret for the Armed Robbery at a vegas hotel that landed him behind bars. They can have it all to get these last five years back. They have been somewhat illuminating at times and painful at times. If parole is granted, simpson could be released as early as october 1st, entering a whole new world of exposure. While behind bars, he remained constant fodder for the tabloids. Absolutely 100 not guilty. He was the topic of the wildly popular fx series the people versus oj simpson, and the oscar winning documentary oj, made in america. Both of which introduce simpsons story to a new generation. First, today he must win his release. One of americas most infamous inmates grabbing the worlds attention one more time. For the parole board, one of the key factors will be a risk assessment. Four years ago he was deemed a low risk and was granted parole on some of the charges. If parole is rejected today, state Officials Say another hearing will likely take place anywhere from one to three years from now. Willie and savannah. All right. This follows his surgery last week to remove a blood clot above his left eye. In a statement from his office, mccain and his family say theyre now reviewing their Treatment Options, including a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. President trump is taking his own attorney general to task. In an interview with the New York Times, the president says he never would have offered Jeff Sessions the job of attorney general if he had known sessions was going to step away and recuse himself from the russia investigation. How do you take a job and then recuse yourself . If he would have recused himself before the job, i would have said, thanks, jeff, but i cant, you know, im not going to take you. President trump also had sharp words for special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is conducting the russia probe, warning him about looking into any trump Family Finances unrelated to that investigation. And take a look at this frightening scene in nappal. A 14yearold girl is crossing a flooded roadway. She suddenly disappears. She falls into a drain. A woman recording the incident, you can hear her screaming from a nearby building, but heres some good news. Moments later the girl emerges from an underground sewer about 30 yards away. A bystander is there to pluck her out of that rushing water. Amazingly, that story ends well. Shes okay. Officials have since ordered that all the drains be covered. That is a miracle right there. Yeah. Scary to look at. We mentioned its a busy news day. O. J. Simpsons closely watched parole hearing now just a few short hours away. He is 70 years old now. He has served nearly nine years for an Armed Robbery in las vegas, and he is asking for officials to release him in october. Chris darden served as one of the prosecutors during simpsons double murder trial back in 1995 and wrote a book about that experience. Its called in contempt. Chris, good morning. Its good to see you again. Good morning. O. J. Back in the headlines. Oh, yes. Put your lawyer hat on. Do you think he will be granted parole and then take your lawyer hat off, how does that sit with you . Well, i you know, i imagine he will be granted parole, unfortunately. What can we say . You know, he is not in jail for murder. He is in jail for robbery. Its an aiz amazing thing that can get a 33 year sentence and only do nine years. Thats just incredible to me. You do 25 , 22 of your sentence in the state of nevada and they release you. When you think about him Walking Around as a free man, the potential of that, how does that hit you . Well, you know, i like the photographs of o. J. In handcuffs more than i like the photographs of o. J. With the golf club in his hand. You know, i think he has a lot to account for. We have yet to extract from him, you know, the punishment that he deserves. On a professional level, chris, this parole board should not take into account what happened 22 years ago in los angeles and his acquittal in the murder trial and everything they heard around that trial. Do you think on a human level theyll be able to discount that and just focus on what happened in nevada . Well, i think it will be difficult for them. You know, the board im sure these are people who believe in law, who believe in justice, and, you know, justice aint killing two people, butchering two people, and getting away with it. You know, the murders in l. A. Are slightly relevant because o. J. Simpson is robbing people of property that really doesnt belong to him. He claims it belongs to him, but it actually belongs to the gomez. Do you think that o. J. Simpson is capable of rehabilitation . He says he has changed. He is different. Do you think thats possible when it comes to o. J. . Well, i think that if you really want to see the real o. J. , you look back at the video footage of o. J. Leaving that hotel that night after robbing these people, after, you know, lining people up against a wall while a guy behind him, you know, stands there with a pistol pointed at them, but you look at his demeanor leaving that day. He is happy. He is jovial. Thats how he really feels about this robbery. Now, today he says, oh, i wish i could take it back, et cetera. Well, yeah, he does because he got caught and he got nine years. They do say he is a model prisoner. Theyve been saying that about him. Would you agree with that . Well, you know, the fact that he is a model prisoner doesnt mean he is a model citizen, and the fact that he is it a model prisoner doesnt mean he doesnt pose a risk to the public. I dont know if you have seen excerpts of his parole hearing a few years ago, and he talked about what he has done in prison, and he talked about some of the things he has learned. When you watch that, did you think this is a man who has been humbled or chastenned or who has changed . I thought he was the same old guy i met in 1994, 1995. A very manipulative person. A narcissist. I think he was saying what he needed to say, and he is doing what he needs to do to get out of prison. I mean, i heard that he leads a bible study class or something to that effect. Thats not the o. J. Simpson i know. Do you believe, chris, ill ask you bluntly, that o. J. Simpson is a danger to the public if he is out walking the streets . I dont know. One of the things the parole board will have to review are his psychiatric records. Im assuming that he received some psychiatric treatment, some therapy of some kind, and i would think that if he received therapy or psychiatric help that they should have addressed the issue of the murders. If you were on the parole board, whats the one question you would want to ask o. J. . Did you kill ron and nicole . Of course, thats not legally relevant. Thats the one question i would like to ask. I think thats the one question everybody would like to ask. I think everybody ought to call the nevada parole board and tell them, hey, ask them. If you really are reformed and rehabilitated, if you really are remor remorseful, if you are really a bornagain christian, then lets move this discussion forward. Admit the sins. You have been so candid, and weve had that pleasure of talking to you before about the impact of this trial and this case and you and i even joked about it this morning. It never goes away. It always comes back. How is it for you to be sitting here today and be reliving all of this . Its amazing. You know, it all started last summer with the Television Series on fx and then someone wins an oscar. People win emmys. We reintroduce all of this to a whole new generation of people, and it goes on and on. Now we have the parole hearing of the century. Its incredible that this thing is being stringed aeamed all ov world for people to watch and witness. Last time you were here, you said you wish you had never been part of it. Never walked into that courtroom. Never. Still feel that way . I still feel that way. Chris darden, always good to get your perspective. You know a lot about this case. Thank you so much. Thank you. We should mention, by the way, chris is featured in oxygens new true crimes series the jury speaks. It reexamines some of the most Controversial Court cases. You can catch the premier of that on saturday night. We should also mention nbc news will have special live coverage of o. J. Simpsons parole hearing. It starts today at 1 00 p. M. Eastern, 10 00 a. M. Pacific on many of these nbc stations. All right. Lets turn now and get another check of the weather from al. Lucy kafanov has more on the strict approach to a growing and deadly problem. Reporter its a crack down on driving under the influence of electronics. Nationwide, statistics show one in four crashes involve cell phone use just before impact. One of those was ginas sister. To find out that my sister was killed for something so insignificant as a quick, fast, cell phone picture in a car, absolutely devastating. Stories like this caused the governor to put the law in effect two years ahead of scheduling. I saw you texting while driving. Washington state troopers say the law is overdue. People are acting like drunk drivers, swerving because they are focused on their phone. Minimal law allows use of a finger to activate a device only in a mounted cradle and the car is parked. You have to start your music and gps before you begin your drive. Browsing social media or streaming movies is illegal. Were back at 8 0012 with heated war of words raging between muppet creator jim Henson Family and the fired voice of kermit the frog. Well talk to him in a moment. First to Thomas Roberts with the back story here. Hi, thomas, good morning. Reporter want to set this up so we can explain. Usually the only drama with the muppets is between kermit and miss piggy. The man fired leaving the characters fate hanging in the balance this morning its not easy being green this morning kermits signature line has taken on new meaning. Long time puppeteer Steve Whitmire fired for what muppet studios calls repeated unacceptable business conduct over a period of many years. Hi, everyone. Reporter whitmire was fired in october 2016 but only revealed details about his dismissal last week in a blog post. I remained silent the last nine months in hopes that the Disney Company might reverse their course, he wrote. Given the opportunity, i remained willing to do whatever is required to remedy their concerns because i feel my continued involvement with the characters is in the best interest of the muppets. Whitmire voiced kermit since 1990 when the muppets founder and first and only other voice of kermit, jim henson, died. Hensons daughter cheryl tells today a voice recasting was long overdue. He was very difficult to work with. Its been many years of it being difficult, particularly for producers. Hes not kermit. Hes a performer who was hired to do kermit. Theres a difference. Reporter in a Facebook Post this week, she said steve performed kermit as a bitter angry, depressed victim. Kermit had his sad moments like on the ellen show in 2011. When im out on the street im confused for a green fire hydrant. Thats terrible. That would be horrible. But he seemed pretty cheerful when he crashed todays control room in 2008. Where have you been . Ive been waiting for a half hour. Reporter while kermits demeanor is debatable, hensons son whitmires was not. Telling Hollywood Reporter outrage demands like you better make me happy because the muppets are kermit. Reporter all right. We did reach out to miss piggy but her representatives declined to comment. Matt vogel will now be taking over as the voice of kermit. As you see, theres a tense back and forth between the children of jim henson and steve. Well talk to steve now. Steve whitmire joins us. Hey, good morning to you. Im sure that wasnt easy to watch. Youll get your chance to respond. Sure, sure. You played this role nor 27 years. Yeah. You got a call last october. Yes. What went through your mind when they said we no longer want you in this role. I was stunned. It seemed like it was five minutes of silence. Im sure it wasnt that long. I just immediately tried to get answers. I had had no advance warning on th that. Nothing had ever been framed to me as a career breaking problem. In fact, we had been talking prior to that for the two years before that about me becoming sort of a creative producer with them, working alongside the two executives who i spoke to where i would have been really a part of the day to day Decision Making on the muppets. I was thrilled about that. I felt like at last, after 12 years with disney, we would be able to integrate the great pact of the muppets which is what i wanted to do. Lets go to allegations between the muppet studio and the Henson Family that you were bitter, angry depressed victim, you did kermit that way and you were difficult to work with. That begs the question why did they keep you around for 27 years. Nobody likes these sharp cornered adjectives thrown at them. As i said, we were in talks to move this ahead just prior to the conversation, within three days before we had a Conference Call to talk about all the work we were going to be doing going forward. You better get plenty of rest because youre going to be worked really hard. So it was a huge shock. In terms of the character stuff, kermit becoming stale or bitter, it isnt true in my mind. But the funny part of that is, i would expect the people saying that to have been my staunchest allies. Were you personally difficult to work with . Thats really the criticism. You offered notes and were hard to work with, quite frankly. I offered notes. I dont think that makes someone difficult. It was totally an idea of trying to do what was best for the muppets in terms of receiving material and ideas and concepts that were well out of the bounds of the character. Cheryl pointed out that you are not kermit. You are simply somebody who plays the role of kermit. Yeah. Its really interesting about that. In my mind, my mentoring with jim tells me that the minute the muppets are reduced to being roles that are auditioned for and cast, it takes all the individuality out of them. Their longevity is completely based on their consistency, and that is just super important. Otherwise its not kermit or any of the muppets at all. Thats what ive tried to push for and be outspoken about. The implication that in some sense you had them over the barrel. You were saying, hey, im kermit. Good luck, you cant get rid of me. Thats an arrogance thats not in my body. Thats just not the case. I dont make those decisions and i certainly never felt that way. Youre just speaking out now. This happened nine months ago. Yeah. Were you hoping, frankly, maybe i can work this out and get this job back. I still would like that. I dont think its going to happen now. Yeah, i was hoping that. In the meantime, they were saying, you know, were not ever going to have you back again. We refuse to offer you a chance to remedy this, which is the worst part. I could do whatever they needed. They were also offering me things that i called consolation prizes. They were going to honor me, give me disney legends awards, things like that but that required signing nda. They wanted me to frame this as i had moved on and i had retired. It was disingenuous, i couldnt bring myself to do it. You decided to go public on your website when you wrote that post. Was there any consideration of the tradition and brand of the muppets . Maybe its not the best idea to have this ugly fight in public about characters who were so beloved . I agree. Thats why im not going to respond directly to all the accusations that the hensons have laid out. As i say, the reason im gone is because i was outspoken for the exact things they are talking about. At the end of the day, im a guy who got hired contract to contract to portray these characters however disney told me to. And the very issues they are talking about are the ones i was outspoken about and have now been pushed out for. Steve whitmire, thank you for being here and sharing your story. All those years of kermit, i know you gave a lot of kids joy. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Well go over to al and get a check of the weather. Weve got strong storms firing up in chicago, moving across the midwest. A lot of airport delays there. Were going to be watching that. Big story, big heat. Have you guys ever dreamt of doing something amazing and somebody puts a pin in it, a teacher, somebody, a coach. New England Patriots player Julian Edelmann always dreamed he would make it in nfl. Apparently he had a teacher in 2006 who told him that was unrealistic, he wasnt going to make it. Edelmann tweeted a photo of an apology letter he got from the teacher 11 years later. This is what she said. She said, i dont think it fazed you frankly but whenever i think back on it, i feel terrible, not because you proved me wrong but because i stupidly voiced an uneducated opinion that i implied i had disdain for your passion for the game. There are people who said to all of us at the table who said, wow, youre not going to make it. Mom. No, come on. Ended up getting that letter and it really made him feel better. You guys, has there ever been a time in your life where you have had a dream and someone said, no, thats not going to happen . I sent in a letter early in my career for a weekend weather job in baltimore and got a letter from the news director back, youre not ready. I ended up meeting that news director on a rokerthon. Thats where all this came from in my head. Youve changed the way you work out. Ive had to change everything. Im definitely not as strong as i used to be. Its been a super challenge. So ive just been trying so many different workouts in the city and los angeles. Were going through them all. Getting over this emotionally must have been a huge part. Thats a huge challenge. Its like you that day you asked how my heart was doing. That really moved me when you said that. Everyone is just like, oh, my gosh, youre looking really great. How are you feeling . I am feeling good just having to reprogram whats going on in my head. Get used to that new normal. That new normal. Lets talk about working out. Youre the perfect to talk about this with. I love whats old is new again. Here is what i found out. Ive gone back to the drawing bofrd trying different workouts and im thinking, wow, all these things have been reprogrammed and made bigger and flashier and stronger. Like my grandmas stationary bike. Remember, everyone had a stationary bike. Now youve got soul cycle, peloton, which is like i feel like its the jettisons bike that would be in their house. They are basically bringing in trainers into your house. Can you work out on your own, which i think is pretty amazing. Its expensive and you pay for the programs but its kind of like having a spin class in your house. I have friends that have this and swear by it. They use it all the time. Next circuit training, interval training. I remember, what was it called. The bo flex. The bo flex and all these old kind of circuit training, that was the big word. Now youve got cross fit, of course, orange theory to name a few. These guys are doing this. Crossfit has always been my workout. Im doing like a crossfit light. What about interval training, heart rate goes up, goes down. I have to be careful about that. I cant have my heart shoot up quickly. Im more or less doing lighter version of it. With circuit training youre hitting upper body, lower body, cardiovascular. Youre putting everything in. If you om have 20 minutes to work out, try out one of those classes because its going to be a good one for you. Move down here. Oh, my gosh. We love this. Remember taebo . I dont. I lived in los angeles and you could not get into this mans class. I remember that, i just didnt know. Im doing these kickboxing classes in l. A. Can you do that . Theres like new gems popping up. My friend noah has rumble in the city thats starting to explode. I love kickboxing. For some girls, especially, that start to get a little worried about crossfit or orange theory, i dont want to bulk up, which it takes a lot to bulk someone up, you go into these classes, let me tell you, youre going to get ripped and lean. Get a lot of aggression out. You get a lot of aggression out, savannah. You think i need i. Moving into savannahs wheelhouse. Come on, savannah. When i found out about this, i was so excited. Savannah is a former aerobics instructor. Hello. We have this in common. I mean, i love old school aerobics, jane fonda, step. When they told me youre going to tell me that aerobics is coming back. Aerobics is definitely coming back. My spirit animal right there. Now you go on instagram, you see the girls tone it up girls, all these people that have millions and millions of followers, they are showing their workouts and doing a much more glamorous version of what was going on back in the day. Ive got this whole system called black fire i did a while ago. It was daily burn, a great way to have your phone with you, which is really cool. Is it aerobics . Maybe ill try it. All this aerobic kind of stuff youre doing. You have minimal to no equipment. Yes. That was like what we did, right . A video of savannah popped up. Did you have leg warmers . Sure i had leg warmers, leotards the whole thing. Were going to find it for you, bob. Dig it out. Did you love that. I still do honestly. They are wrapping us. All right. Coming up next, were going to sit down with the stars of eye popping movie it 811 is a free service to keep our community safe. Delevingne star in the new scifi movie valerian and the city of a thousand planets. Their characters fighting crime in space 1,000 years in the future and sometimes bickering with each other, too. Take a look. Whoa, easy. Late. Better late than dead. You want to drive . Put your hands back on the joystick. Put your hands back on the joystick. Would you please place your hand back on the joystick. Would you please stop complaining about my driving. Youre the best driver in the universe. Thank you. Good to see you. I want to start with your kicks. You put your shoes on. Good reason to put these on. These are official valerian. No, a young girl in england painted them, hand painted them. Thats really cool. I feel bad. Were going to get a pair, too. Help me explain to people who are going to see the movie this weekend the world they are stepping into. It really is mind blowing. A lot of special effects, cgi. Totally, yes. Where are you taking viewers . It takes place in the year 2763 and most takes place on this space station alpha. Like the space station of today has grown and grown and grown so people from all around the world and aliens from all around the universe are living together in peace and harmony for the greater good of one another. Obviously so much of this had to be put together after the fact. So the 2011 you worked a lot together in front of blue screens and green screens i imagine. What is that like as an actress, cara, to have the 2011 you and basically nothing else around you. 90 of the time it was cgi. It was actually really amazing for us because it was a lot of using your imagination. The extent of his knowledge and wanting to there was a lot of things. He made sure we were prepared as much as possible. It was actually incredible. For people who adopt know, luke is the director, he did fifth element, the lucy movie, another lucy movie to come. What is the experience . Obviously this is his dream film and he cast you two in it. It was amazing. To be part of the movie, his studios, pretty much owns, this has been his baby for a long time. Hes been working on this movie for ten years. He realized all the aliens names, where they are from, what they eat for breakfast. You see the movie and realize his imagination is so bad. Technology has finally caught up with his imagination. I imagine its got to be a little mind blowing to see the film gicven the way you shot it with cgi, not knowing quite what it would look like. What was that experience like for you. You have no idea. Our expectations were money out. This movie is so mind blowing when you watch it in real life. Weve seen it three or four times. Every time you watch it you see things you didnt see the first time. Its a feast for the eyes for sure. You two, one of your costars a an up and comer named rihanna. Whats it likes when youre shooting a scene and on the set walks rihanna. Shes amazing. She works so hard. She was filming our movie during the day and finishing her album at night. She really works around the clock. To see her come on the set and kind of turn everything off and focus on being an actress, shes so good in the movie. Her part is really special. Definitely a part everyone is talking about. What about you . It was incredible. Weve been friends for five years. I said to her what an incredible actress she is and could be when she had the opportunity to. Just to see her work that hard something thats let her vulnerable side out with luc, able to catch an amazing side of her. In the midst of launching blockbuster film youve launched a new baby. Three months in, how is the baby doing. . Shes good. I hope shes good. She was when i left this morning. Shes the best. Its been like a whole mind blowing new thing. We filmed the movie in paris, the city of love. I came back home and nine months she was born. Thats how it works. Funny how that math adds up. Congratulations on the film. It is, as you said, a feast for the eyes. A lot to see and very cool. Called valerian and the city of a thousand planets and it hits theaters tomorrow. Thank you so much. Flat breads are a vessel for anything. Here we government were sticking. I like to buy tore bought pizza dough at my pizzeria and get it there. We have this rolled out to 1 4 inch thickness and 10 inches in diameter. Carson threw it on the grill. Also some corn on the grill for ten minutes. Would you grab me some corn. Really i like to let them sit for a minute ago so they will pop and get caramelized. So those are cooking. Then we make our arugula salad. Balsamic is like my favorite thing. Get it at the market. Its a little thicker, a little sweeter, its perfect on any salad. We have arugula all the time. You can stop. Hes working so hard. You told me keep doing it until you told me to stop. Youre getting everything. It makes you feel like youre eating healthy even on delicious flat bread. Here we go. How long are tomatoes on the pan. Only about five minutes when they start to blister. Really quick, easy. Flat breads go two to three minutes. Everything comes together very fast. All right. Then we assemble it. Over here we have our tomatoes and shaved parmesan. We do. Put this back on the grill, too . The gapping, do you have a favorite . The tomatoes. Is this like a balsamic reduction . Balsamic glaze. It comes in a bottle. I want that. Yeah. They make white balsamic glaze, too. It looks like hoda is having the desert pizza over here. Basil desert pizza. Whats the white stuff. Cream cheese with a little vanilla, sugar. Can you do that with any seasonal fruit. Like strawberries or peaches. Thats the best thing here. Its really fun. You want recipes, they are on today. Com, a lot of good ideas. Announcer from nbc news, this is todays take live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Hello, thursday morning july 20th, 2007. Youre listening to life in lette letters. The most in tryitriguing titn music. Bring it in, zack. You want to know what were talking about . Yes. Good morning. Yesterday tuesday was the big day. It was nicks 15th birthday but hes away at summer camp. I couldnt go because we had some issues i had to resolve some visa issues for leila, thank you to the folks in the embassy of france. Best dad ever. In any event, debra went up. She said he didnt want her there. He made this transition from little boy to boy to teenager that we are embarrassing. Did she go thinking he would be surprised and excited to see her. He knew she was coming. She was bringing dunkin doughnut holes and he was basically, when are you leaving . I told al, that is my fear. The other day i was walking with the kids. Everybody argues who gets to hold my hand. Were walking down the street. My eightyearold he just reaps for my hand. Theres doing to be a time ill reach out for it and he wont want to take my hand. Its coming. How do you live in that momen moment. She gets in bed with us and henry said one day we wont hear those tiny little feet. One day they will sleep to 10 00. Leila will come down and lay across the bed at about 9 30. Im thinking, i just want to go to bed. As deborah points out, shes gone. By the way, she wants to come and talk with you. She just kind of lays there. Again, im of two minds because i like the covers and sheets cool. Shes laying on my side of the bed warming it up. Its like i look i remember when i brought her to kindergarten and they said welcome to the class of 2017. I said that will never happen. Here it is. Maybe it will boomerang back around. When they kind of appreciate you, their wedding . I would say 19. When i went off to college i was a difficult teenager. Spirited. I was spirited. But also girls can be unconscionably rude toward their mothers. I was always pretty okay with my dad. I would say things to my mom like, you dont understand. She understood perfectly. Then it comes back around about when. I would say when i went off to college i missed them. That was the first sort of instinct like, okay, wait. They have always done great by me. Something we can all relate to. I never do out, hardly ever. No, i really dont. You should see her. Last night i went out with my girlfriends, its funny. I notice when i leave the house. It was so much fun. Jackie reeves. Jackie, michelle, marilyn. Famous friends. It was really fun. Al, it was funny, i was leaving the house. Ive learned not to make a big deal about it. Where are you going . I feel guilty and dont go. I was going to slip out. My plan was to get there at 6 30, come back at 8 30 before they go to bed, wont notice. I was trying to get dressed. My daughter was, where are you going . Going to get something to eat. Putting on a dress . Going to meet my friends. But ill be right back. Tomorrow or tonight. Tonight. Will i be awake. I put my heels on and im running out of the house. She said, are you going to bring food back or going to eat . Nobody expects the spanish inquisition. You know what i also say, i get so many questions and i get, including this morning, mommy, dont go. I dont want to go. I might bring her to work. Ive never brought her to work. I might bring her to work next week. Two nights in a row, we had the premier of dunkirk the night before. Dont go. You said youll see her tomorrow, which means its not tonight. When she says it at night, ill say, i have a friends birthday because she gets birthdays. I sometimes repeat the friends birthday because its not always the friends birthday. No, its their birthday. That she understands. One thing i havent done. Lets do a bucket list for the year, what you want to do for the year. Ive never thought about that. I wanted to think about things i want to do or never do. When you told me you could stand up yesterday. I think its som interesting you stepped out of your comfort zone. Standup . How did this happen . It was forced. They forced me into i was nervous. I actually tried to get out of it, too. My daughter really doesnt want me to go. Youre going. Have you ever done that . Ive done that is to me one of the hardest jobs to do. Intimidating. I practiced with this awesome comedian, wally, hes world renowned. Hes really funny. We work shopped some jokes. Some of which bombed. In front of him. In front of him. I liked him a lot and im comfortable. I thought i wasnt going to have to do it in front of an audience. I get there and dan says down there in a room four times this size, there are 100 people at a comedy festival. I was like, wait, what . Yeah, youre going to go do it. It was fine. I wouldnt say i was excellent. But you didnt bomb. I got a couple of laughs. Are people cheering you on or waiting for you to be funny. I think it was half and half. It was hot. You missed yesterday i heard about this. You heard about it . I did not see it. As you know, i never watched. Thats about right. But your pad, armpit pad. I shouldnt have even worn it. It was really hot and sheinelle was trying to teach me about antisweat techniques. You remember when i was standing with you and mario lopez and there was something coming out of my sleeve and you go, what is that . You remember that . At the time i didnt know about pads. Put it right there but i forgot i had it in there. Then the napkin comes out in my arm. Thats what happened yesterday. She knew what it was. Dylan was like, what is that . There goes the pad out of the dress. I dont know how we got on that again. It was one of those things. Anyway, i needed those pads in the comedy place. It was fun. I recommend everybody do it. Thats what im talking about. The bucket list. I would never do it. One bucket list, you know what henry and i are doing as a family, coming up with one thing, each of us, mila, poppy, henry. Like park, okay, we can do that. The thing we want to do in a city we havent done. Mine is go to coney island with the girls. Ive never done that either. Great. We should all go to coney island. Field trip. Just with me and my family. Come along. Who needs family when youve got us . The family i never knew. All right. They were talking about jadas marriage to will. I didnt realize she was 26 years old when she married will. So she talked to hoda about it. Take a listen to this. I know that life ended up working out perfectly. Yeah. But the advice you give to your daughter. Dont do that. Dont do that. I would have to be really careful, you know, if she fell in love when i fell in love. And you know, had a possibility of getting married. I would just talk to her, you know, and just say, hey, just look at this. Theres no rush. Thats very interesting. She was saying she would wait a little longer. How old were you all when you got married . I was 29, because were going on ten years in september. You know what, i wouldnt trade it. A lot of my friends now, especially with things going on, are getting married later. But for me i was like this ridiculously long train. Its beautiful. The train is too long. Anyway, you wouldnt have taken it back . No, i think 29 was good, because i had a chance to be single. I had a chance to live in an apartment on my own and pay bills on my own. I think it was good for me. But there are some people who are college sweet hearts and get married and they are 90 years old and they have been together. For me im glad i waited. I got married at 26, the same age as jada. Although 26 and 29. I wouldnt trade it for me. I will say my parents were very cognizant about having conversation wall street me. They loved henry. Thats in texas. On the ranch . Everybody was so mad we didnt get married in washington, d. C. We were like, you know what why would you . We wanted to get married where we felt at home. We cried through the entire thing. He said my parents would be like does he make you laugh . In 40 years, are you going to have things in common . Are you going to want to go hiking together, travel together. The answers were yes. They did ask those questions. They liked henry. They just dont want to see nobody wants to see their childrens heart broken. What about you and how old were you . What if leila came to you at 26. Depends on the guy. The same questions. Courtney, the same thing. I was 41, but not my first marriage. Everybody is different at a different time. Its funny how times have changed. I think my grandparents grandmother was in her early 20s. My mother was 20. I think she was 20. My mom was 18 and my dad was 20. They missed their 50th anniversary by thee months. Having that time, that luxury of time. Henry and i had five years together before we had children, so we had this really strong foundation. The hoda show. Congratulations. The hoda show. Its so fun to listen to. Instead of a cone, a real waffle. This first . How do you do this . This is yummy. Just like a regular waffle cone except theres fun bubbles in it. Its perfect for instagram, so i think thats why this trend fueled so well. This is a traditional dish in japan. Its a cake filled with red bean curd the modern twist is waffle corn. Where can you get this . A place in new york, also a place in San Francisco, berkeley, california, australia. So its taking hold. Just to warn you, theres something really hard in there. Crumply. Also take it to the next level with this. Unicorn. Also nontraditional ice cream. This grabbed my attention. Its increasing in popularity. I think of this as like this decades coldstone creamery. They pour the base on a super cold surface. There we go. They pour batter on cold surface, pour the base on, mix in your flavors. Then they flatten it out, take a spatula and scrape it into these rolls you see here and cover it in whatever topping. This i like. The same ingredients of regular ice cream. Just that they have a new way of serving it. Its really, really good. I like this. Its been around a while, but now its widespread. Mochi. Its japanese rice paste around ice cream. So you can kind of mix and match and do all kinds of things with it. Like seaweed. Not seaweed, a gummy. Pick green one, green tea macha flavors. Go with the chocolate. This is a really big trend right now. Its the charcoal ash. This is coconut ash. Im going to try this even though my best instincts say it doesnt have a lot of flavor to it, so people flavor it with all sorts of things, coconut. People do think its healthy. Charcoal. One thing i definitely want to point out, toasted rice. I think savory is a big trend happening now. These guys are doing an amazing job with it. Thats horrible. Thats my favorite. Me, too. No, good. Somebody else can try it. I dont either but i sort of do. Thank you so much. More recently scifi interstellar. Known for his role in bridge of spies, last year he was the voice of the friendly giant. Now joined forces in dunkirk about heroic troops and citizens called into action in world war ii. Earlier this week i caught up with them both to talk about it. Arent you waiting to the navy . Captain. Thanks, george. You do know where were going . France. Into war, george. Christopher and mark good morning. Good morning. This movie, some of us in america know about dunkirk but you guys grew up, this is part of your history. I mean, this is one of these turning points that not a lot of people know the story about. What drew you to it . Like most british people, ive grown up with the story of dunkirk. You learn it as a kid. I dont remember the first time i heard about it. For british people, its more than history, its culture. People talk about the dunkirk experience. Thats something really about the human spirit, coming together. It comes from this incredible event. Almost 400,000 british soldiers stranded on the beaches of dunkirk. Its too shallow for the big ships to get in. And so individuals were called upon, individual mariners and weekend yachtsmen to bring their ships to try to bring these guys off the beach. Mark, you play one of those sailors. I dont think eck call himself a sailor. What was that like, inhabiting that character, knowing you dont know what youre going to be going into . I didnt know. The government didnt want them to know how desperately bad the situation was. So my impression from listening to recordings of the men who dodid that, they just thought men were stranded on the beach. They didnt know they were going to be bombed and shot at when they wen over. Christopher, for you, this it is first time youre directing something paved in fact, a real life story. Was there a certain pressure to be, you know, true to this story, do it justice that it deserves . Very much. Its a very important piece of history. But continuing one of the greatest stories in human history. This race against time to rescue these 400,000 men while the enemy is closing in on all sides. My fascination with that, it hasnt been told in cinema. Its such a great story. As a filmmaker youre looking for that kind of opportunity. For that, youre wellknown for in a sense being true to analog, you shoot in film. A lot of what we see is there. Its not computer generated. Where is the challenge in that . And shooting imax at the same time. There were a lot of physical challenges to the film. The story is divided into land, sea, and air. Each of these stories unique challenges. On lapped we had thousands of extras, very difficult weather conditions to deal with. On the sea, mark and his crew, we were stuffed in a small poet for weeks at a time. The real elements. Then for the aerial sequences, we use real planes, really dog fighting against each other. A huge imax camera, get it in the boat, out on the water, the spitfire. That was really the challenges. Of course dunkirk hits theaters tomorrow. It is amazing. Cant wait to see it. Youve got to go. Back in a moment but first this is today on nbc. He walked behind jenna, where is al . Where did he go . Are you serious right now . One of those thursdays. Guess what they have coming up next. Who has coming up . Kathie lee and hoda. A last minute im going to miss that. Backyard barbecue bash. Good morning im kari hall, a lot of sunshine again today and the south bay reaching into the low 80s in san jose. You go to the south and it will be in the upper 80s today. A serge farch for a popular Business Owner continues today. And facebook is working on a new subscription feature, the pay wall feature will be available this announcer this is an nbc news special report. Heres lester holt. Good day from new york. Im here with our chief legal correspondent, Savannah Guthrie. Were about to hear publicly for the first time in many years from o. J. Simpson. Just moments from now, the former football star, now prison inmate number 1027820, will plead for his freedom before nevada parole board. Simpson who just turned 70 just this month has been behind bars for more than eight years for a 2007 Armed Robbery of sports memorabilia, items he claimed belonged to him. Lester, of course simpson will always be best known for being tried and acquitted for the 1994 murder of his exwife, nicole brown simpson, and her friend, ron goldman. Simpson was then found liable for those deaths in a civil trial and ordered to pay tens of millions. This is the story which so many of our national fault lines intercepted, race, celebrity, justice system, our media, and it all played out before a huge audience on television. Now simpson will appear before a Television Camera once again in a few moments making his case to the nevada parole board. Hell speak by video link from the correctional center. We see the board has taken their seats. Still waiting for mr. Simpson to enter the room at the other end. Nbcs joe fryar is there covering this story for us. Joe, walk us through what we are about to see. Reporter o. J. Simpson will be sitting in that room answering questions from the commissioner. To his left, his attorney, mall conlaverne. Also inside that room some of his supporters. That include his sister, shirley baker, his daughter. There is someone else who is in that room right now, and thats one of the robbery victims, bruce fromock. He has said he forgives simpson. He is set to testify in favor of o. J. Simpsons release. Our nbc Senior Investigative correspondent Cynthia Mcfadden is also here. She covered the simpson murder trial in the 90s. Cynthia, that trial, that case loomed so large over o. J. Simpson. But as a legal matter, it is not supposed to come in to play for this parole question. Exactly right, savannah. Of course, many people believe that the sentence he received for this Armed Robbery was influenced by the fact that he did not get convicted in 1995. All right, cynthia. They have an ontime start of this hearing. Lets take you there now to watch live. The officer and case worker assigned this morning come to the table there so we can see you and let us know who were working with
