This morning, the terror inside the classroom. The heroes who raced into action and the battle looming once again over guns in america. Natalie is live on the scene this morning. Moving out after hurricane slammed the bahamas, its headed to the east coast. A separate powerful storm is bringing torrential rains and potential flooding to the southeast today friday, october 2nd, 2015. From nbc news, this is today with matt louer and savannah guthrie. Live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning. Welcome to today, 7 00 a. M. Pacific time. Another heart breaking story. The president was so angry yesterday using words like routine and numb to describe the way many feel about this. People watching the around the country thinking how did this happen again and yet in this little town feelings are so raw this morning, its making an impact. Of course, its our top story. Tears and heart ache a day after a mass shooting. A Community College in oregon is the site. Natalie is live there this morning. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning, matt. This is the road that leads to the college where the shooting took place. The campus is closed now through monday. This is still very much an active crime scene. First full week of school. Students settling into their morning classes when at 10 38 chris harper merser came into Schneider Hall and unleashed his vicious attack. I once was lost over a thousand people gathered last night to remember the victims of Thursdays School shooting. Katrina talks about her friend chris mince who pleaded with the gunman not to kill him because it was his sons birthday. An army veteran just started college and shot multiple times. He is suspected to survive however hell be in a wheelchair and relearn how to walk. Minces family told nbc news we were told he did heroic things to protect some people. Aries brother was also in the classroom. He was unharmed. She says her brother told her the gunman asked people their religion before thhe started shooting. If they were christian they were shot in the head. If they stated other or didnt answer they were shot in the head. The shooter is 26yearold chris harper merser who began his rampage just after 10 30 thursday morning. We have one female shot at this time. According to Witnesses Police arrived on scene within minutes engaging merser in a shoot out. Hes in the classroom. Nearly 10 minutes after receiving calls of shots fired. Today was the saddest day in the history of the college. Oregons Governor Kate Brown said her priority was the victim. Im joined by my fellow oregonians and americans in heart break at the tragedy at the Community College. The president expressing his pain and frustration with yet another mass shooting in america. The reporting is routine. My response ends up being routine. The conversation and the aftermath of it, weve become numb to this. Four patients went to the operating room for various procedures and one left the emergency room. The shooters father spoke briefly to reporters late last night. Im just as shocked as everybody at what happened today. Its been a devastating day. Devastating for me and my family. Shocked is all i can say. Many certainly very shocked and heart broken here today. Community leaders speaking at the candle light vigil last night are crediting Law Enforcement for getting here so quickly including two u. S. Marshalls who first heard their gunshots on the scanner. They scrambled to the campus here at the Community College and perhaps were among the First Responders who helped prevent this from being a greater tragedy. All right. Out in oregon for us this morning, natalie, thank you very much. Of course, the big question this morning, why did it happen . For more on the shooter and his possible motivations we turn to nbcs joe fryer. Good morning. Reporter good morning, savannah. Law enforcement trying to figure out the motive. Its unclear if factors like race, religion played a role. This morning the internet is giving us a closer look at the gunman. The suspected gunman chris harper merser was 26yearsold and lived in oregon with his mother within a few miles of the college. Before that, he called Southern California home. I would see chris shaved head, combat boots, cam moe pants and plain brown or white shirt. Reporter neighbors remember merser as a shy young man. He didnt want to be bothered by anybody. He seemed to open up online. In a dating profile he called himself spiritual but also said he didnt like organized religion. A my space page under his name to show the shooter featured merser holding what appeared to be a rifle and the page had several postings sympathetic to the Irish Republican Army. Merser was not a current student at the Community College and his connection to the school is unclear. At the scene of the shooting, Law Enforcement sources tell nbc news four firearms were recovered. Three handguns and one long gun similar to a rifle. Authorities also found several ammunition magazines in a bo list rancics bag. Reporter a number of agencies both local and federal are part of this investigation. A News Conference is scheduled for a little bit later this morning. We hope to hear more about what investigators are learning, perhaps hopefully a little more information. I spoke to the sheriff in that area and started by asking him if investigators searching the shooters apartment learned anything new. I can tell you that overnight investigators have located a number of firearms that later today we will describe more as far as numbers and types of weapons. Regarding the shooter himself, all i know is that his identity has been made but its way too early in the investigation to tell you anymore about the shooter himself. Can i ask you to confirm this horrific part of the story were hearing from family members that this shooter lined people up and asked if they were christian and if they answered yes they were shot in the head and if answered no they were shot some place else. Based on who you have spoken to, is this an accurate side of the story . Its early in the investigation. Well be trying to determine exactly what happened in that classroom but it is too early to tell at this point. You said it in specifics about the shooting itself. You said in a News Conference you were not going to mention this shooter by name. I think you said you didnt want to give him credit for this horrific act of cowardness. Is he someone who had come to the attention of Law Enforcement at all in the past . Had he done anything or said anything that raised red flags . Again, its early in the investigation. Im not aware of any specific red flags. He is a local resident and i know personally i havent heard of any warning signs coming from this person. Sheriff, i have to ask you about some things circulating online that involve you. Apparently, you wrote a letter in 2013 after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings to joe biden, the Vice President and denounced any attempt at gun control. You wrote according to what ive seen on line gun control is not the answer to preventing heinous crimes like School Shootings and added an attempt to change the Second Amendment would be an insult to american people. First of all, are those statements accurate and have you changed your mind at all based on whats happened in your community . First of all, i know theres a lot of talk about guns and gun control. That is a conversation that im sure we will all be having in the coming weeks following this horrific incident. Right now, im focussed on completing this investigation and more importantly focussed on the victims and the family of the victims and ensuring they get through this very difficult time. Sheriff, i know your community is going through a lot. I appreciate you taking time to talk to us this morning. Thank you. And of course, when the shots began to ring out it was terrifying for the young people forced to scramble to safety. Casandr and sarah are both students at the school and were in classrooms next door to the shooting and this morning we talked about how they were doing after seeing something so horrific. Its terrifying. I never would have thought something would happen in such a Small Community like this. Im mortified. I dont know what to think. Yeah, im in horrific shock right now and i dont know what to think at this point anymore. Im in utter shock that this happened. Casandra, you were in a classroom next door different than sarahs. Can you describe what you heard and saw . Can you tell me what happened, sarah . I heard a really loud noise and i thought it was a book dropping or a table that fell or something and then i realized or a balloon that has a really loud pop. Then i realized something wasnt right. So a fellow classmate of mine went to the door to she and she got shot twice by the shooter and so she collapsed and we were all in panic mode then and we closed the door, locked it, turned off the light. Hid in the corner of the room and continued our classmates and i continued to hear shots after shots. How is your classmate this morning . Do you know how shes doing . I honestly dont know at this point if shes in Critical Condition or okay at this point. Sarah, what about you as i said you were in a different classroom and heard the shots ring out, what happened . So about half an hour, 40 minutes in the class i hear this loud noise and like thunder, i thought, it was maybe a book or table but suspiciously loud. My parents told me from a young age to be alert and aware of your surroundings. At that point i was looking around and looked out the window and saw two girls running from the building and thats when i knew, it registered to me that was a gunshot. I told the teacher we got to get out of here and get out of here now. She was leaning over to the door that connects to two classrooms by the wall and she asked is everyone okay and all right and she almost reached to open the door and thank god she didnt. That would have been the end right there. We would have had the shooter in the classroom also. After i told her its a gunshot. We got to get out. The second and third shots happened and by that point she had opened the door and i was halfway across campus by then. I had went over to the Student Center and stayed in the Financial Aid area for the lock down. What an absolutely terrifying situation for both of you. We know the who and we know the what. We know who the shooter was and what he did. Are we any closer to figuring out the why . Only a little. I think the big question is why this school, why did he target this school and i dont think authorities have a good answer to that. It is clear this is a young man who had emotional problems from an early age. His mother talked to neighbors about trying to minimize things that bothered him. He had emotional difficulties. Nonetheless, it doesnt appear to be anything in his background to disqualify him from buying guns. He had four of them. Carried at least three to the school. He had additional high capacity magazines or clips to hold the rounds with him when he went to the school. Just having emotional problems wouldnt disqualify him from buying guns. There has to be court action to find someone ineligible on those grounds. We had video running of aerial shots looking down at the school and weve become all too familiar with the scene of First Responders arriving at the scene of a tragedy like this. Can you describe a little bit about how the reaction from Law Enforcement has changed over the years that weve lived through so many of these episodes . Yes, its changed in two ways. If you think about the middle picture to your mind of the Law Enforcement officers outside column bine high school, they followed what was then the standard protocol. Get to the scene, stabilize it. Wait for the heavily trained swat teams to go in. Now that rule is gone. Get there, get in, try to disable to shooter. The second thing is try to coordinate the response. For example, so the ambulance can get in and out quicker. Lessons learned over a long period of time. Pete williams, thank you very much. In the meantime, weather still a big story. Forecasters watching the hurricane. It blasts the bahamas overnight and in the meantime a storm system led to severe flooding in the southeast. It has had ripple effects all the way through the south coast. Still is a storm that has to be reckoned with. Even if it is not going to make direct land fall, its going to be a problem. These are the scenes from the carolinas and we are looking at wet weather from there. But in the meantime, look at what joaquin is. Major hurricane. Still a category 4 and wintds at 130 miles an hour and moving north, northwest and as it does, it will draw in cold air into the eastern seaboard. Were fgoing to have flooding problems up and down the coast and rip currents and in fact, take a look right now. This is where the european model and american model, finally, the nhc model joining that one making its way offshore. Tropical moisture making its way in. Heres the cut off low that isnt going anywhere because of a big blocking High Pressure system. Thats keeping a lot of moisture in here. We have a long term effect. Next three days were going to be looking at heavy rain, rainfall amounts 1020 inches of rain before its all over. Along the coast, big problems as well and we turn to dylan drier. She right now is in north carolina. Since we last saw you, things have gone downhill. Reporter yeah, the ocean is getting more rough, the wind has picked under and the rain off and on. At one point looking like a category two hurricane would hit right here along the outer banks of north carolina. Now with the storm staying well away from the east coast, we have Major Concerns for coastal flooding here and beach erosion. Look at how rough the surf is right now. Its all because of the set up, the persistent strong easterly wind thats going to get stronger is pushing all this Atlantic Water on shore. Its not just here but this is the same set up for areas like new england stretching all the way down to florida where we have coastal flood warnings and advisories in effect. We have winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour. Keep in mind it has been raining in the carolinas for the last week. The ground is rach rated and when youre talking about rainfall totals, about 1020 inches. We are looking at the potential for flash flooding and flooding. Seven others wounded. A come pampus, town and country morning today. In the wake of the latest mass shooting, president obama made a statement at the whies house thursday. Students were settling in back to school and thats when chris harper merser entered the classroom at Schneider Hall opening fire killing nine and injuring seven. First responders were on scene within minutes and engaged with and shot the gunman. We dont know yet his motivmoti. Its unclear if race, religion, some other factors played a role in the incident. We dont know his connection to the school, if any, reports are he was not enrolled here at the time. He was armed and had a bo list rancics vest on as well and several magazines of am in addition were found on the scene. Family members of the survivors do report chris merser apparently asked the victims to stand up and state their religion. If they said they were christian he would then proceed to shoot them in the head. As a horrific detail of the tragedy emerge, we are learning more about the victims as well and thats where the focus is here today. Members of this small tight knit community saying they want to remember those who lost their lives and pay tribute to them. They held a candle light vigil here last night over a thousand people attending and said lets talk about the victims and lets not say the name of the shooter. Lets remember what was lost here on this day and they said this incident is going to bring the Community Together even more so rather than tear it apart. Matt and savannah. Hard times natalie. This is the 142nd School Shooting since the massacre at sandy hook in 2012. This puts the number of shooting deaths since that tragedy at more than 87,000. We reported thursday an emotional president obama spoke about the shootings and changed r reporters totally up the numbers of terrorists that died and put that next to the number of americans killed by gun violence and a reporter did that and revealed 20012011 more than 10,000 americans were killed each year by gun violence compared with the few hundred killed each year in terrorist attacks with the notable exception of 9 11. As i said just a few months ago and i said a few months before that and i said each time we see one of these Mass Shootings our thoughts and prayers are not enough. President obama speaking out thursday in the aftermath of another mass shooting in america. A speech hes had to give more than 10 times before but this time delivered with unprecedented emotion. Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine, my response here at this podium ends up being routine. The conversation and the aftermath of it. Weve become numb to this. We are not the only country on earth that has people with Mental Illnesses or want to do harm to other people. We are the only advanced country on earth that sees these kinds of Mass Shootings every few months. The anger and exhaustion also spreading to those whose coverage of such massacres has become common place. I cannot imagine what its like to be that man and say i am the president of the United States and i cannot get my legislatures to put their Heads Together and pass legislation that will stop americans from killing each other. Again, if im not mistaken, this is the largest massacre in oregon state history and its just awful. For others, thursdays killings were called to action. Comedian jimmy kimmel tweeting numb, dumb, right, left, whatever this is, no one wants this happening again. Lets Work Together to make it stop. A nation and its leader fearing inaction is only a promise of further future violence. I hope and pray that i dont have to come out again during my tenure as president to offer my con doll enss to families in these circumstances. Based on my experience as president , i cant guarantee that. Thats terrible to say. The president changed those who would accuse him of politicizing this tragedy saying this is something we should. Mike huckabee blasted president obama calling his comments shameless and ignorantly inflammatory adding that the president can exploit any tragedy he wants but its clear gun free zones are sitting duck zones. Take me inside the atmosphere in washington. Seems there is a short term reaction to the incidents and a longer term reality. There is a routine reaction. What you have is folks on the left who want more gun control. They say similar things to what the president did. On the right those who believe it isnt a gun control issue say lets focus on Mental Health and then does this for about 48 hours and then everybody moves on because the fact of the matter is you have a whole bunch of political leaders who dont want to deal with the politics of this and are afraid of the nra who the president mentioned but not by name an the president himself su comed to gun politics in his first term. Its interesting to note he has and i think sandy hook changed him on this but hes come to the politics on this in the first term. He avoided the gun issue. When they wanted to pursue a gun violation ban they got slapped down. So the president is not alone on this front and hes also when he lectured everybody he probably has to look in the mirror too and i think he does regret not pushing this how in hind site. I guess my question is going to be what is he going to do in the next week or two . Does he throw down the gauntlet . He sounds like a guy whose going to do that. He probably has to grab this and Campaign Around the country as if he wants to refocus washington on this issue. Just a year and three months left in his term. Chuck todd, thank you very much. We note identity of the gunman. He is Chris Harper Mercer, a 26 yearly. Officials begin to put the pieces here together. A community in mourning and many questions still unanswered as authorities led Chris Harper Mercer to kill nine people in a vicious rampage on thursday. Police responded to the scene immediately. Shooting and killing mercer after an exchange of gunfire. According to police they later recovered four firearms, one similar to an ar15 rifle and several magazines and a ballistics vest. One in the room told his sister that mercer asked people for their religious affiliation before opening fire. They were christian, they were shot in the head. But if they stated other or didnt answer, they were shot in the leg. Reporter among the survivors, one being hailed a h hero after being shot seven times. He is expected to survive. He will be in a a wheelchair for some time. He has to relearn how to walk. Reporter they are still working to confirm a motive. As more detalls continue to emerge today. He lived in oregon with his mother miles from the Community College. He wasnt enrolled there. Before that he was a resident in Southern California where former neighbors describe him as shy. He was kind of hunched over, didnt want to be bothered by anybody. Reporter mercers father speaking out to reporters last night described him as a nice guy. This is a shock to everybody. Obviously, its been a devastating day. Devastate i devastating for me and my family. Shocked, shocked is all i can say. Reporter online a dating profile that appears to belong to mercer described him as spiritual by a dislike for organized religion. And a myspace profile with photos shows him holding a rifle. Reporter a visibly emotional president obama spoke out following the shooting urging for action against gun violence. Did you pick something up in that meeting, something in his personality or his demeanor that helped you with the character . Honestly, his passion for technology was something id never encountered before, like the way chefs talk about food or we talk about film or you talk about, you know, journalism is the way he talks about like requires glued to a piece of plastic, and i literally had never met anyone who had that sort of passion about engineering and and technology before. I caught up with some of the Breast Cancer survivors and their Unsung Heroes right before the trip. Delta Airlines Annual Breast Cancer 1 pink plane, this year taking 140 employees and their pink support to mexico city. All right. Raising funds and awareness for Breast Cancer. Tell me how you happened to choose madison as being your unsung hero. Madison went through a very difficult time with my cancer. She sat up nights with me. She knew every medication i took. People would say things like why does your mom even bother to try. Shes just going to die. And she was ugly because she was bald. And that she should just give up. That is so tough. As a mom that had to break your heart. It was very difficult for all of us. So beautiful. So beautiful. This is no ordinary flight. Its an empowering moment. A celebration of life. I want to hear really why you wanted jeremy as your unsung hero. He is so much fun. When i was completely done with my chemotherapy and radiation he threw me a surprise nomo chemo party. Cliff chapman was one of those people, and after he left new orleans his only connection to home was his favorite team. I like to think about whats going to make me better that day. Whats going to make me better and whats going to brighten my future. High School Senior Clifford Chapman has a Bright Future, but ten years ago he almost lost everything. Hurricane katrina came ashore just about half an hour ago. The storm surge could be as high as 28 feet, and that would, of course, be devastating. This is the nightmare that new orleans residents have wore id about for years. I was 8 years old. You hear people scream and see all the water and stuff, and my mom started crying. And he would say lets come see, lets come see and we was like the last people they came to rescue. We stayed on the bridge until the sunrise and then from the bridge to the superdome. It was real scary. Something that nobody would never want to live again. I watch the saints a lot and being in that superdome during that time, it didnt feel right. Reporter in the days following katrina, cliffs family was relocated to houston, separated from his school, his friends and the sport that had become his passion. It was kind of hard for him because when he got there he really started acting out. It was terrible. I was in texas. I missed fool, i missed playing it. I dont have no friends. I felt lost. You know, he wasnt really doing well in school, and it was it was real hard. And i just packed up one day and we came back to new orleans. This is where i used to stay. Welcome to a rainy day in new york city, october 2nd, 2015, rainy across a lot of the country. Natalie is in oregon covering the shooting in umpqua college. Lets get to the latest. This is a tightknit community, small town of about 20,000 that is now in mourning over the tragic shooting at the umpqua Community College. Over 1,000 people gathered to pay tribute and honor those who lost their lives. Its times like these, they say, that they want to remember the victims here and not say the shooters name or give him credit. Were hearing stories of courage under fire, beginning with Law Enforcement officials who arrived within 10 minutes after hearing the first sounds of gunfire on the campus and getting the first call. The call came in at 10 38 of an active shooter on the campus, Chris Harper Mercer, 26 years old has been identified as the shooter. He was armed to the teeth with three weapons and a rifle, several magazines and ammunition and was wearing a ballistics vest. According to some survivors, he asked about their religion. He told them to stand up. If they said they were christian, he then shot them in the head. He shot and killed nine and injured nine others as well before then Law Enforcement officers shot and killed him. As the horrible details of this tragedy now emerge, there are still so many questions unanswered. We still dont know why. We dont know his motive or what his connection was to this campus. There are reports he was not enrolled at the time. It appears he had no connection to the campus. Mercers father spoke to some reporters last night and also said he was shocked by his sons act and said it had been a devastating day. Now were starting to hear Amazing Stories of survivors and heroics. For instance, chris minz, an army veteran pleaded with mercer, saying it was his sons birthday, please do not kill me. This is according to friends. Hes an army veteran, had just started college. He was seeking to get a degree. He was shot multiple times. Hes expected to survive. His friends and family say he put himself in the line of fire to protect others. Telling nbc news he acted heroically and perhaps saved more lives. You know in the next couple of days were going to start to hear more stories of courage and bravery under fire emerge. So many people here put their lives on the line. Another case of the veteran of the United States military stepping up in a crisis and perhaps saving lives. Natalie, thank you very much. This obviously is a huge problem in this country. The first in columbine in 1999, this includes shootings of three or more victims, this is how were defining it, although there are many definition of of a Mass Shootings. 142 School Shootings since 2012, every town for gun safrt. Nbc news counted four college shootings since the start of the 2015 school year. President obama upon getting this stepped to the podium in the White House Briefing room and was exasperated. Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response at the podium is routine. The conversation in the aftermath of it, weve become numb to this. I hope and pray that i dont have to come out again during my tenure as president to offer my condolences to families in these circumstances. But based on my experience as president , and thats terrible to say. Going back to the campus, earlier this morning savannah spoke to two students in the classroom next door to the shooedings, cassandra welding and sarah cobb described what they heard yesterday. About half an hour, 40 minutes into class and i hear this loud noise and like cassandra i thought maybe it was a book or a table or something but it was kind of suspiciously loud so my parents always from a young age told me to be alert, be aware of your surroundings so at that point i was looking around, and i looked out window and i i saw two girls running from the building, and thats when i knew, it registered to me that was a gunshot so i told the teacher weve got to get out of here, got to get out of here now and she was leaning over to the door that connects the two classrooms by the wall, and she asked is everyone okay, are you all right, and she almost reached to open the door which thank god she didnt pause that would have been the end right there. We all probably would have had the shooter in the classroom also. You know, you this is now almost becoming one of your biggest fears as a parent is, that you know, you you send your kids to school, whether its elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and what happens if you start to see Something Like this. Yeah. I mean, the thought of every parent in that community who has a child or knows somebody who worked at that school, you know, until they found out what happened to their loved one. Frightening. Doesnt matter where you live. Can you can be living in youll oregon or suburban chicago or Chicago Public schools. One of the organizations that tracks these mass shoot some things called every town because that is a reminder that it can happen and to your point, al, in new town, 26 children and 6 staffers and aurora was a Movie Theater. The incident that happened in louisiana was at a Movie Theater so whether its a child whose parent gives them a hug and sends them off to school or the teachers who managed to escape from the theater in louisiana on the last week of a break and thought well catch a funny film and barely made it out alive. It is what the president said both routine reaction of himself and our jobs as journalists as well. How do we have a provocative, important, fearless conversation about what to do next, and that is the complexity of it because already mike huckabee, who is running for president , has come out and said the president is using this and then we get back into that same dialogue. Where are those voices, dare i say, in the middle who can have a heartfelt real and unafraid conversation. Take sea salt, kosher salt, whatever you want and put at bunch of it in a bowl and take whatever herbs you like, rosemarie, thyme, sage, what is that, oregano, organize, and then youre going to take a bunch of it and chop it up, just chop, chop, chop, chop, chop. In the judy rogers recipe, if you want to do this, you can. You work your fingers underneath the skin and put the herbs underneath the skin or you can just chop it all up and put the herbs into the salt. Now what youre going to do is youre basically going to rub this all over, and i know it looks like a lot but heres whats going to happen. Looks delicious. Put a little in the cavity there. Youll take this and put it on a plate and youll put it on top of that. Youll put this it your refrigerator loosely covered like this for one to two days. Oh, really. It can stay in your fridge like that. The salt is absorbed in and eventually pushed out and it tenderizes the meat. Wow . This is what youre going to have and the other thing to do, do this on the stove top or do it in the oven. I like to do it on the stove top. I like to take a cast iron skill skillet, take that out and put that over here. You take your chicken and youre going to put it the in that really hot pan breast size up and hear that sizele and then youre going to take it and put it back inside and put it in for 30 minute, breast side up. Now what youre going to do leave that in there 30 minutes breast side up, take it out, put it the breast side down 20 minutes and then after that ten more minutes breast side up so the skin crisps. About an hour. Breast side down, up. And this is what you end up with. Ooh, this is so delicious. And what youll do is youll let this rest and while its resting, okay, you take the chicken out of the oven. Youre going to cut up while this is cooking youll cut up a couple of onions and put them in the fat and can you see all that great brown bits at the bottom. Put that in, okay, put this back in often, check it a couple of times, if it gets dry you add a little water or broth or whatever and you get carmelized onion and the crispy skin chicken and its moist and tender from the white meat to the dark meat, i love this recipe.
