This is chilling video of the moment that avalanche swept through base camp. People are running for cover as they are overcome by a wall of snow and ice. Reporter officials tell us that any death toll at this stage is really an estimate. They are still coming to terms with the scale of this disaster. In the aftershocks are continuing. The entire city of kathmandu seems to have moved outside. Families live on curbs, trying to keep their children fed, clean and most of all, away from buildings. The Historic Center of kathmandu is the most popular attraction by far with an shent temples and palaces. Where a 9story tower had been over 150 years old, now just a stump. A temple compound even older, reduced to a pile. Volunteers today were digging with their hands. They dont expect to find survivors, just bodies. Police have already found around 150 of them in this area. One woman used to come to this spot. Why are you helping . Ive been here every day. Used to come and hang out. We used to sit along here with friends. Its my country, my people. Reporter this is also the height of tourist season. American visitor captured this video of guests huddled in front of their hotel during saturdays earthquake and aftershocks. There was a huge crowd and we had a couple of big aftershocks after which everybody was saying get down, get down. Reporter kathmandu is on edge, but whats happening to the east on the slopes of mt. Everest is less clear. There were more avalanches sunday. Trails and camps swept away. At least three americans have died on the mountain. A few dozen survivors have been rescued. Its unknown how many people are trappeden effortest. A military official told us here that teams are heading out to remote parts of nepal which are difficult to access even under normal circumstances. And which now may be completely inaccessible. She lost her life. Highway are you guys doing . The climbers are doing okay. We came down from camp, the last two nights, thats when the earthquake occurred. Avalanche all over the mountain. Today we descended and then went back to the helicopter and base camp. Take us back if you wouldnt mind when that 7. 8 earthquake hit. Where were you and describe what was happening . A team in the valley between the camp and mt. Everest and we were fw two thirds of the way when we heard an awful noise and heard avalanches on either side of the valley. And we thought we were going to get taken out. Fortunately we had a snow cloud. Up to came two, on the radio, checked in with base camp and learned the awful destruction in base camp. There are Food Supplies obviously, things that you guys need. Tell us how critical it is that everyone get off that mountain as quickly as possible in terms of time. Well, its important because the route from base camp was totally destroyed by the earthquake, and the avalanches that came down. Tried to climb the route back down. It was impossible. And the aftershocks creating more danger. The only option was to fly by helicopter. We had a break in the weather today and were able to get us out of there. This had to be were talking earlier like the worst possible time for this type of a tragedy to happen because explain that this is actually the time where a lot of people try to climb that mountain. Absolutely. Yeah. The climbers were set up in base camp. Staff standing by. Unfortunately, they were hit the hardest. We were fortunate where we were we lucked out. Opening statements begin in the longawaited trial of james holmes, the man accused of opening fire in a colorado Movie Theater killing 12 people and wounding 70. Jacob rascon is in colorado. This is a rare case in which a mass shooter survived his attack and now nearly three years later a jury will decide whether he was sane at the time and if he was, whether or not he should be put to death. Hundreds of moviegoer were attacked in the theater in aurora, colorado when Authorities Say james holmes entered wearing tactical gear, armed and started shooting. He killed 12 people and injured 70, before his rifle jammed. Police arrested him but had to disarm his booby trapped apartment. The defense admits that holmes carried out the attack but alleging he was inthe sane at the time. The prosecution will try to convince the jury that holmes elaborate planning among other things proves he was sane. The trial is expected to last several months. The defense begins its arguments to save the life of convicted Boston Marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. The 21yearold was convicted of 30 federal charges and 17 of those charges carry the possibility of the Death Penalty. This is not really motivated to her candidacy. Ive done two previous books that looked at corruption and looked at people in both political parties. What we have with the clintons is a unique arrangement where you have a powerful you know, public figure whos involved with all these foreign entities. If a person believes every word in yo book wouldnt that be disqualifying with everything youre saying. You say people donate and get favorable treatment by the state department run by Hillary Clinton. Certainly the evidence i think is pretty shocking and could have that implication. But really the motivation is consistent with my previous work to look at the whole issue of corruption. Do you have any specific instance in which Hillary Clinton directly intervenes on behalf of donors to the Clinton Foundation . Its a great question. What we have is a pattern of behavior. I was not in any of these meetings. I cant look into Hillary Clintons mind. I certainly cant look at her emails. So the question becomes what is this pattern . And this pattern consistently shows that donors give large sums of money to the foundation where they pay bill clinton a lot for a speech. Theres a policy action thats taken to the benefit of that donor. In some of those instances hillary cl reversing course on previous policy position. Thats why my recommendation is somebody with subpoena power, with investigative capabilities should look at this behavior. You think this is something that could be criminally investigated. I think it should be. I dont go in with the assumption it was criminal but i think it warrants further investigation. If everything in your book were put before jurors lets say, in a court of law and we were told to assume it is true have you proven a quid pro quo . Well i dont think a quid pro quo needs to be the standard. If you look at senator macdonalds, menendez those were not kwid pro quos. Its do people believe the events were connected and there was some sort of pay to play arrangement . And thats a question i cant answer but i think investigators should look into. You started off mentioning youve done bipartisan investigations. But a lot of your critics say you are conservative and this is a right wing hit job. Are you really claiming to be neutral here . Im not claiming to be neutral. But if you look at my work i have gone aggressively after republicans. I did a book on Insider Trading by members of congress and went after several republicans. You also did a book called makers and takers whose sub title said conservatives even hug their children more than liberals. Is it a hard adjustment, yes. Is there things that we have learned more recently and its an adjustment on how to deal with it. Its a daily process. Can you give me a sense of an adjustment, give me an example of what it takes to adjust. Even just the discussion, we have been talking to people from, you know the glaad organization and different organizations on what do we call him . Do we say him or her . And its, you know, how do we be respectful thats so many things theres so many things you want to be supportive and respectful. Bruce wants us to feel as comfortable as possible and take everything at our own pace. We love him for that and we respect him for that. You know until that transition is done, we have learned that you do refer to him as him. But bruce has always been really really good at explaining everything to us. Even though its really new and these have been newer feelings not newer feelings for him, but for us to digest. Hes done a really good job of walking us through it. Do you have any idea the attention hell get for a certain period of time . Paparazzi with one of the long lenses grabbed photos of him and theyre splashed across the tabloid newspaper. Is he prepared for that . I think he is prepared for it. I think that he has waited almost 65 years to make this decision. Whether hes kept it to himself or not. Hes lived with it. And i think that when you are finally ready to be your true self, then youre prepared for anything. Was there a family meeting . The family gathers in the living room . There were lots of family meetings. And bruce tells his story, thats embracing and hugging and tears and laughter . Every emotion you could possibly imagine. There is hundreds of family meetings. We still have them. Say what you want about us but we work out everything as a family and we have the best communication and we are so in sync with each other. I love having so many siblings and such a supportive mom because each Family Member might be dealing with this in a different way, but we have each other to go through this experience with. Im really grateful for that. Thats amazing. Bruce, i grew up watching him and admiring him as a decathlete, an olympic champion. But over the course of the keeping one the kardashians he wanted to remain in background and now that spotlight is you were theed back on him in a very intense way. I think hes ready for the challenge and ready to help other peoples lives that might be going through the same things that hes going through and thats something hes really proud of. Do you think this is a watershed moment in terms of talking about these issues and understanding them . I do for this reason. I think any time someone thats high profile, someone that gets attention talks about an issue and pushes it to the forefront of the narrative in the country, then its a game changer. It gets people that werent talking about it before really talking about it. It opens their mind and something that they might have been really judgmental about before usually because of a lack of information now sit back and thought, they look at it and go, wow, im not so threatened about it after hearing about it. Especially like someone like bruce jenner who weve heard about in decades. Well play a piece of the interview and talk about it on the other side. Sure. This is who i am. Im not stuck in anybodys body its just who i am as a human being. My brain is much more female than it is male. Its hard for people to understand that, but thats what my soul is. I think it is hard for people even if they want to understand it to figure out what is going on here. What does what do we know medically about what causes this . Well physicians particularly neurologists tell us that were born essentially all with the same brain and then however much testosterone is bombarded and absorbed by the brain then begins to determine what the gender identity is going to be and i think here what hes saying is he has felt like he had much more of a female identity than what he was expressed in terms of his external genitalia. So all of this time hes felt one way but then been identified differently. And can you imagine the confusion . Can you imagine the frustration of feeling that all of this time . And so now to say, okay that masquerade is over. How freeing must that be . Can you just imagine . Well he seemed to literally almost have the weight off of his shoulders in this interview. Let me ask you about another item in the news. Dr. Oz who similar to you is a doctor who came to fame from oprah, has been facing some scrutiny. I just wondered what you thought of it if you think its fair how you feel about what hes going through. I dont think its fair. I think sometimes language can get excitable and that sort of thing, but i dont think its fair. I think he is a solid physician. I think he largely gives good advice and i think that sometimes you can get into a feeding frenzy and just way overreact to things. I think hes a good guy. I think he gives good advice and i think hes very solid as a physician. Meantime your show is off to its new season. You have a really interesting case today that youre going to be talking about, a man who was convicted of Second Degree child abuse, but the circumstances arent necessarily what people might think . I always say you have to take any of these allegations seriously until theyre proven otherwise, and i always believe the child. I always believe it because you dont want to leave a child uninvestigated when an allegation is there, but when you investigate them sometimes you find out that things have been overreacted to. I think people are going to look at this and be horrified at what has happened in america here. Sometimes you get a badge heavy social worker, sometimes you get people that over react. Weve got a man in prison here and i think it is shocking that this has happened in america. I think when people look at this theyre going to be worried. And i dont want people to get afraid of taking their children to the emergency room because that can happen. Im afraid to go because i could leave without my baby. Well, i think the interview we were all talking about friday night certainly the bruce jenner interview. Had 17 million viewers. This is the big one he reveals hes now transitioning to life as a woman. And here is some of what he said in an interview with diane sawyer. I had the story. Weve done 425 episodes, i think, over almost eight years now. And the entire run i kept thinking to myself, oh my god. This whole thing, the one real true story in the family was the one i was hiding and nobody knew about it. The one thing that could really make a difference in peoples lives was right here in my soul and i could not tell that story. And now hes finally telling the story. Such a fascinating interview. Lets tell you what matt had to he interviewed kim, his stepdaughter and hear what she had to say about her stepfathers announcement. Take a listen. Know what life would be like if you always felt like you werent yourself. And i know its not something that you or i could really fully understand, but i dont even think we have to. I think as long as he is happy and he wants to live his life however he wants to live it, that just makes me happy. And i support him 100 . I think there is still an adjustment and theres Family Therapy and were really close. You know, i see reports that say this one doesnt support him and this ones over here and my mother is this way. Its all really so made up. We all really support him. Is it a hard adjustment . Yes. Is there things we have learned more recently and its an adjustment on how to deal with it. Its a daily process. So fascinating. I think it was really interesting going back to Diane Sawyers interview was she asked bruce who was the most accepting. He said kim was the first one i guess he walked in on him as he was dressed as a woman and kind of ignored it for a bit. He said when i talked to her about it, kim was the one that said you got to rock it, girl. You got to accept it. She also said what i thought was fascinating was bruce said that kanye actually helped kim come to that idea and understanding that you can have everything in the world but if youre not living as your true self then theres the happiness in that. I thought it was interesting how many moments he did smile and there was just this relief about him. He told that kim story. I think that happened before she ever met kanye when she was much younger. He also talked about kylie and kendall having their computer in the room set up because they thought that each other had been swiping clothes and he said the only full length mirror in their home was in their room and they got a screen grab of him. But the family never talked about it. So according to him, kris jenner was aware from when they married because he at the time was taking hormones and they also talked about his other wives as well. Who are supportive. Very supportive. But it was a secret to us. But in their home it was they were aware. They were just not talking about it. Pretty interesting. Really intriguing. I find interesting and hats off to him because he sees this as a bigger than just himself. And he sees this as perhaps being a door opening for other transgenders to step through. And for people to talk about it. And we are. And it was an education. He talked about gender identification versus who you might date. Diane asked if you got married again, who would you marry . Are you gay. Yeah. So theres a lot more to come because other people have talked about it. If you looked at social media, we were in washington d. C. And had some preevents. I rushed out because i wanted to see it live and track social media. But he definitely wants to see the positive response and it was overwhelming. Whats interesting, i think is that he has become in a sense this litmus test for bullying online. And people the people who are making jokes have been instantly shut down. Kris humphries, Kim Kardashians husband before kanye tweeted, glad i got out of that family. Be you or whatever. People instantly went in on him. He said no, no, ive always been supportive. But the initial tweet seemed or implied that he was kind of being snarky. It was such a courageous thing for him to do to be now the most public and most famous face in the transgender community. And i thought it was also just so sad in a way watching the interviews to think he lived 65 years harboring this secret. When he talked about he was going to get his adams apple shaved and the paparazzi apparently became aware. Somebody leaked it out. He thought to himself i could just end this. I could just take a gun and make things easy. That speaks volumes to how much the transgender community, they need somebody like this to take away the stigma. And he handled it with class. It happened when its supposed to happen. Absolutely. This weekend we mentioned a couple times we were at the white house Correspondents Dinner saturday night. They call it the nerd prom even though the celebrities there outnumber i dont know any nerds that look as cool as some of the people we ran into. Chrissy teigen. Nothing nerdy about her. Tara lapin ski and johnny wier. Best part of the night riding in the bus van with them. Hes the best. We love him. So both president obama and host snls Cecily Strong came to play and to win. Take a listen. I feel more loose and relaxed than ever. Those joe biden shoulder massages, theyre like magic. I want all the media to put their hands up and swear something this election season, okay . I solemnly swear not to talk about hillarys appearance because that is not journalism. Helena andrews came under fire. Apparently we were there so we missed this moment. There was a glimpse of her texting during the national anthem. And she later tweeted apparently someone saw me on tv texting during the dinner. I was taking notes on my phone because its 2015 white house Correspondents Dinner. We reached out to her but havent got a comment. Everything youre doing people are examining. Youre taking notes but you could hold off for the minute it takes for the national anthem. I would think. I dont know what was so breaking at that moment that she had to take notes that she couldnt remember for a minute let me put a pin in that while the national and them was playing. The night moves fast. Was she unaware . Everybody is standing and paying attention. Its baffling to me. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but i dont know. So i didnt think that this was a big deal either but apparently people were talking about Chrissy Teigens dress. I thought it was one of the most beautiful dresses of the night. Lets show it. Very sexy. But Chrissy Teigen is sexy. There was a slit. But heres the deal. I stood right next to her. Its the angle of the photograph. Certain angles. My dress you were with me al. Yes. When i took the selfie at home my dress did not seem as voluptuous. On the red carpet i was startled. You know i was. I know you were. I was startled by some of the pictures. I was too. My dress had a veil but every time people hugged you, it would come down. I was almost ready to go home. You were afraid your mother was going to see these. When i finally saw one of the selfies of us together i was like are you kidding me and i kept pulling it up. It was bad. But Lesson Learned. You and chrissy together looked really good. Good bookend. A grilled romaine salad. Youre going to season it with authority. Yes, with authority. Season that all right. Were going to put Olive Oil Salt and pepper on there. Toss it on the grill. Its that easy . Its that easy. How long . Youre going to get grill marks. Its going to take three or four minute zblps both sides . Depending on the heat of your grill. If youre using a wood burning grill might be different. Depends. Here were using a grill inside. Youve got the grill marks. You want the inside a little undercooked but the outside a little cooked.
