Thats because we do keep the marine layer, the morning clouds and fog, and a little bit of clearing for much of the afternoon before those clouds roll back in. And then we see how those temperatures change for the inland areas. Up to 87 degrees today, 90 tomorrow, and then well see some more 90s for the weekend. One of them firefighters are calling suspicious. That fire burned for hours in east Contra Costa County overnight. We brought you kovrcoverage that fire earlier on in the bay. Were in antioch and brentwood with a survey of the damage. Reporter right behind me is what is left of about 100 to 200 hay bales that once stood about 30 high just off empire mine road here in Contra Costa County. The fire started last night around 10 30. Calfire let it burn overnight to let the pile get low enough for that dozer to get at it. Its just more sufficient for firefighters to put this thing out. They dont know what caused this fire. It could have been intentional, it could have been accidental since it was right by the road, or it could have been spontaneous combustion. They said it was hot enough for Something Like that to happen, and thats why theyre worried about this fire season. Many people think because were out of the drought, california is not prone to fires, but that is not the case. Look at this fire that burned in fremont overnight near the dunbarton bridge. It illustrates the problem. This winters rain produced an abundant amount of grass thats now washed out due to the recent heat. Weve got well over 100 million dead trees in california, and the thing that saved us the past few years is we didnt have the grass to lead into that timber. Now we do, and were really nervous and were ready to support any incident that comes our way. The calfire chief said the number of fires seen statewide this year is just about as much as it was last year. But this time around, the acreage is up. Those fires are growing so much faster because of that abundance of dry fuel that i mentioned. Theyve seen grass fires grow from 10 to 20,000 acres in size. Here in Contra Costa County, bob redell, nbc bay area news. A tough couple months. Thank you very much. Right now President Trump is on air force one. This is a very pro america country. Indeed, many polls also support him. Thats because the leading party here is against immigration. Theyre very skeptical of climate change, and theyre also very skeptical of supernatural organizations and institutions like the European Union, just like donald trump. But theyre going to be asking for some things in return. Now, the polish people are actually holding a three cs summit here. That includes 12 countries throughout the baltics and balkans throughout eastern europe. Theyre trying to strengthen themselves to the European Union and try to counter to the other side. Theyre hoping donald trump when he comes here will reconstruct himself to nato. Thats the nato that comes together with all countries to defend each other with any attacks. Theyre also hoping donald trump will make a deal for gas supplies to other countries. Well see if his visit is successful here in poland. Back to you. Right now we go to what could be an explosive development in the hunt for Amelia Earhart missing since 1937. A team of investigators from the History Channel have uncovered a photo that they believe shows earhart alive in japanese custody having landed in the pacific. That documentary airs monday night. Jacque cousteau had been working with the history team. Amelia earhart took off for a flight and was never heard from again. Reporter for 80 years, the world has wondered what happened to Amelia Earhart and her nav gator fred noonan. They were on a transpacific flight when they disappeared. Now investigators from history believe they found evidence the two were blown off course and survived. I have a photograph which i believe clearly indicates that earhart was captured by the japanese. Reporter retired Treasury Department investigator les kinney has spent 50 years looking for earhart clues. While searching top secret files in earharts archives, he discovered this photograph from 1937 marked the marshall islands, a string of small islands that at the time were under japanese control. We have a caucasian woman with her back to the camera sitting there looking over toward the ship. You think this is Amelia Earhart . Thats right. Reporter he tells them the photo appears legitimate and undoctored. Sean henry, an nbc news analyst, worked on the project. When you pull it out and you see the analysis thats been done, i think it leaves no doubt to the viewers that thats Amelia Earhart and fred noonan. Reporter in 1937, the japanese had abandoned nearly all westerners from the islands. But it shows two caucasian people on the dock. There appears to be a woman with short hair wearing pants, like earhart, sitting on the edge. He took the photo to expert kent gibson which first laid the photo over pictures of fred noonan. Its a very sharp hairline. The nose is very prominent. The tooth, hairline and nose all appeared to match up. To me this is very significant evidence that this is noonan. And there is someone with their back to the camera that is too short for a woman. I usually go from not likely to likely to very likely to extremely likely. And i would say this is very likely. Reporter and there is more evidence. In the distance the japanese ship koshu which is towing a barge with something measuring 38 feet long, the same length as earharts plane. For decades locals have said they saw earharts plane crash and the japanese ship koshu took her and noonan away. The story even documented in stamps issued in the 1980s. Now photographic evidence that the story may be true. We believe that the koshu took her to sai pan and she died there under the custody of the japanese. We dont know how she died, we dont know when she died. Reporter the team may have even found pieces of earharts plane and the prison. This may have been her cell. Reporter this morning the newly uncovered photo is opening up a whole set of questions of what happened to earhart and noonan, and what, if anything, did the u. S. Government know . We have no evidence anywhere that she crashed into the ocean, even though thats been a common narrative for years. I think we have evidence that she died and survived in the marshall islands. Locals say the Japanese Military had said at the time that the woman in the plane was a spy and not to talk about it. For decades the japanese government denied any knowledge of earharts whereabouts. Nbc reached out to them for comment again. So far we have not heard back. To be clear, no official who was alive then is alive today, and many of the japanese records were destroyed in the war. Clearly this is a fascinating cantmiss documentary and that is airing on History Channel sunday night. Coming up, kari is tracking our forecast. A warmup is in the works. Yes, especially for inland areas like sunol. All this sunshine getting ready for some more 90s across the bay area. Ill talk about what youll see as we head closer to the weekend. Thats coming up next. This is pretty interesting. Along with the planned fireworks shows across the bay area, there were plenty that were unplanned and illegal last night. That was the case in several san jose neighborhoods overnight. When we rode along with the Fire Department as they responded to calls all night long, this was their busiest day of the year, and last year and again this year. Firefighters said they had trouble just driving down the street to an emergency. When they respond, sometimes theres access issues, sometimes crews have difficulty getting to the actual emergency event. Two firefighters teamed up with police to issue tickets for illegal fireworks. We do not have word as of yet how many of those fines were actually handed out. Fireworks celebrations on the u. S. S. Hornet had an abrupt end due to a power outage in alameda. The outage was reported about 3 30 in the afternoon. The hornet started its july fourth celebration about 2 00 but it lost power about 2 25. They evacuated the ship for safety concerns, and because they couldnt be sure when the power would be fully restored, they just had to cancel that event. Which is too bad. If youve never had the chance to visit the u. S. S. Hornet, its amazing. I was a little disappointed i stayed up last night to see the fireworks in San Francisco. I look out and see nothing but fog. You could have gone with us in the south bay. We could have had a viewing party. You were already bash kobarb. I learned that lesson, to just stay in the inland valley. Were looking at clearing skies in mill valley. Bright and sunny as we head closer to the noontime hour, and we are getting a look from mt. Hamilton as you can start to see some of the clearing skies there. Upper level clouds drifting by as were seeing a disturbance just to the south of us, bringing some rain around monterey. And then ocean beach still mostly cloudy, but we will get a little bit of sunshine as we head into the next hour or two. Right now our temperature in San Francisco is at 63. Thats where well stay for most of the day. Napa 73 degrees. Feels very nice as you get ready to head out, but the temperatures for the inland areas will continue to get hotter, and this is where were headed. Up to 88 degrees in morgan hill. Pitas up to 73. Bottom of the screen, no changes for San Francisco but other areas will get hotter. Antioch and hayward will see a high today of 76 degrees. Well be up to 77 in palo alto, and daly city looking at a high of 63. For the north bay well see those temperatures ranging anywhere from the upper 50s in point ray to 73 in the valley and 80 today in napa. Looking at the forecast and the temperature trend for sa noonomd napa, if you want to visit some vineyards, our temperatures stay nice the next couple hours. It will be in the low 80s with some breezy winds and the Alameda County fair still happening. This is something you can do with the kids. Until then our temperatures will be very warm, so bring the sunscreen, some bottles of water and enjoy all of the events going on around the bay area. If youre planning to hit the road heading to heavenly, this is a live look. Look at these temperatures. We talked about how high the lake levels are and the snowmelt continues to happen as our temperatures are going to reach into the low to mid80s over the next few days. No changes here in San Francisco, the marine layer hanging around giving us more clouds and fog and temperatures reaching into the mid to upper 60s. This is where well start to see things really start to go get hot. For the valleys up to 87 today. Sunday it looks like well reach the peak of the heat, and then back into the low 80s, but it still looks very warm as we head back into next week. Thank you, kari. Forgotten pier sits on the edge of the San Francisco bay. Coming up, the push to restore it to its former glory. Well, it used to be a fourth of july tradition for folks to watch fireworks from a certain San Francisco pier. But that certainly changed a few years ago because of the piers declining conditions.
