A nice day in San Francisco, but, in an instant, everything changed. A man walked up and shot her. The last moments of her life harrowing as her dad tried to save her. Live coverage tonight. Cheryl joins us live from pleasantton. And its just unimaginable what those folks are going through. Reporter well jessica, this family is strong theyre spiritual and they have faith. And thats the only thing thats helping them through this very difficult time. Pictures can usually tell a story. Kate stinleys parents say her smile tells a lot about her. We loved her so, so much and we were such a close family. She was everything to us. Reporter her father says it was terrible the way she died. They spent the day with their daughter and a friend. They were winding up the day walking up the pier when the unthinkable happened. Three were walking, three abreast, kate and i and a friend of ours. And there was a pop. And kate went down. She was struck in the chest with a bullet. He immediately started performing cpr on his daughter. Witnesses jumped in to try to help. The paramedics with traffic at that time they got there fast, but where she was shot they say she was strong and she fought. But she just didnt make it. Patrick dunlap lives next door to the stinley family. She had to go into the surgery with the doctors. Gowned up. A young future ended because of a random bullet. Ready to forgive, but were going to move on and think about kate. Kates employer released a statement earlier today. It says in part that they are shocked and saddened by the senseless killing. They said that their thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friend. Reporting live in Pleasanton Cheryl herd, nbc bay area news. Raising concerns about safety. Police say this area was crowded with people. People who stopped and took pictures of that suspected and stuck around to help police make an arrest. A tearful man brings flowers to pier 14. This is where kate stinley was shot and killed. Regular walkers are stunned. Its such a welltraveled area. The family says they ate at perrys and then walked the peer where 45yearold Francisco Sanchez shot her. They dont know why sanchez pulled the trigger, but they do know people stopped to help her and offered police Key Information that led to an arrest. Once we were able to do so that was disseminated to other officers. Sanchez is behind bars. Police returned in a boat searching for the gun. The random shooting comes as tourists are pouring into San Francisco for the holiday. Weve been walking all over the place. We feel safe. While the violence is alarming, it wont change his plans. Very concerning. Sad for the family and friends. But life is short. Were out here enjoying it and we hope nothing terrible happens to us or anyone else around. This is one of the three men who robbed and pointed a gun at our camera man as they were about to go live this morning. The man also stole equipmented from a crew. This is picture of a gun used in that attack. Police say the men sped off. Our camera man was hurt but he says hes doing fine. New at 11 00, a tragic end to a 14yearold south bay boy killed in a latenight jet ski crash. It happened just south of Yosemite National park. Kyle favre along with an 18yearold were aboard a seadoo when they hit a moored pontoon boat. Favre was thrown into the water and later died. They have a home at the lake and visit often. Theyre a great family. The kids are great. Very athletic. Out going. Sports minded family. This is a terrible, terrible thing. This is the second death related at bass lake this week. We actually got rid of that rule. You can still participate in the rebait. The green lawn has never been able to do that. We lived here almost 40 years. And we have to look at this crunch.
