People in the country are still reeling from aftershocks of a powerful 7 point 8 magnitude earthquake. Kirsten Joyce two people are dead. Hundreds are displaced and a tsunami warning has been triggered. 8 news now reporter nia wong joins us in studio and is tracking the situation. Nia . nia wong brian and kirsten. The earthquake hit the small coastal town of kaikoura. Which is 55 miles northeast of christchurch. To jog your memory. More than a 180 people were killed when an earthquake struck this earthquake. Mu ch stronger than that last one. Its triggered a tsunami warning. Sending waves between 6 to 8 feet high to hit the coast. Aftershocks have been so strong. Theyve been felt 93 miles away. Landslides have also resulted. You can see land ripped apart and cracked roadways. Homes and buildings demolished. Emergency workers are evacuating residents living along the Clarence River which is popular for rafters. This after a dam reportedly to have gone missing but have since been found. But we do have 2 alternatives. We have what we any resident can call us. We set it up in their neighborhood. It records speed, time of day, its a really good thing to get a lot of info together.
